Billy’s Story When Billy first showed up at Sheridan House in 2012, he was the typical Sheridan House kid who was struggling in school, was not obeying his mom and was searching for some stability and direction in his life. He didn’t like school and there was constant fighting and arguing at home with his mother; his mother knew things had to change.

Billy went from being a disrespectful young man to a leader in the house.

Billy ended up in one of our boys residential homes with his houseparent’s, Mom and Pop. Mom and Pop Hawkins gave Billy direction, stability, and love. They gave him a caring environment in which he could develop life skills, and he was also given the opportunity to accept responsibility for his behavior at home and at school. Billy began to change, grow, and mature, both spiritually and personally. Billy ended up being at Sheridan House for almost two years, but left with a completely changed attitude towards his life, his family, and his faith.

During his time at Sheridan House, Billy’s GPA went from a 2.00 to a 3.33!

We recently received an email from his mother giving us an update on Billy and their journey together.

It was obvious in her email that Sheridan House truly changed their lives. She wrote that he is doing great in school and he actually likes it! She thanked Sheridan House over and over again and said “He would not have been able to become the great man he is now if it wasn’t for all of the things that you have taught him. Mom and Pop made a world of difference for my son. I am truly happy I sent him to Sheridan House and he went through the program. Take care and God Bless both of you and everyone else at Sheridan House.”

The Sheridan House Residential Program is designed to intervene in the life of a family before dysfunctional behavior becomes a habitual lifestyle. In Billy’s case,

Christ, Consistency, Caring, and Continuity!

People have come from literally all over the country (and even the Dominican Republic) to ask how it works so well. Many of our graduates are doing incredible things with their lives. Today they are pastors, a college professor, police officers, business leaders, in the armed forces, just to name a few. Why does what Sheridan House does work?

The first and foremost ingredient is Christ. He is why we are here working at Sheridan House and He is the core of these life changes.

The second leg on what we could call the Sheridan House Table for Success is Consistency. Every child knows we will be totally consistent in the way we handle their unacceptable behavior.

The third leg in the stability of this approach is Caring.

No matter what they do, no matter how they respond to us, we will respond by showing them that we care. Our love is not conditional.

The final leg to make the “table stable” is Continuity.

To see to it that the teen continues to develop into the person God plans for him to be, we are training the parents of these teens the same program that we use.

As a requirement to have a child in one of our homes every parent must attend the Parenting on Purpose Training Program. Then each teen returns home on the weekends so the parent and child can practice what both are learning.

Christ, Consistency, Caring, Continuity... And...Oh, and one more “C”... Contributing Partners. Many of you reading this are a part of the success in the lives of these next generation leaders. Thank you for contributing toward their future and ours.
