INTRODUCTORY INFORMATION

Year 9 girls are nearing the end of Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9) and will be entering Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11) at Sherborne Qatar School for Girls in August 2024. This booklet is designed to help the girls (and parents) make the correct option choices ready for Key Stage 4 study.

The movement from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 4 is a very important step in a young person’s education as, for the first time, there is an element of choice available in the subjects they study. This encourages girls to take more responsibility for their learning and, therefore, their future.

At Key Stage 3, the girls have studied a range of subjects in line with the English National Curriculum. This changes at Key Stage 4 and they move on to follow a curriculum predominantly composed of IGCSE and GCSE courses. This curriculum includes both ‘compulsory’ and ‘option’ subjects.

I/GCSE examinations require two years of study, hence the need to choose subjects now for study from August 2024 and, therefore, which examinations will be taken in May and June 2026.

I/GCSEs are externally assessed and graded 9-1 or A* to G, depending on the syllabus. To move on to further education, girls usually require five I/GCSE passes at grade 3 (D) or above with, preferably, a grade 5 (B) in the subjects chosen post-16 as this level of knowledge leads to higher Advanced Subsidiary and Advanced Level grades at the end of Year 12 and Year 13, respectively.

At Sherborne Qatar School for Girls, we have designed a varied Key Stage 4 curriculum to suit the needs of our girls. Our goal is to enable every child to fulfil their academic potential. We believe that, when making choices, parents and girls should consider what is best for the individual and that it is the quality of I/GCSE passes, not the quantity, that is important.

Our flexible curriculum enables girls to study between eight I/GCSE courses. Academic progress is monitored throughout the two years and parents are informed via written reports issued in February and June every year. There are also grade cards and Parents’ Meetings, providing the opportunity for parents to speak with subject teachers on a regular basis.

EXAMINATION BOARDS

The IGCSE courses on offer at Sherborne Qatar School for Girls are examined through the following international examination boards:

• Cambridge Assessment International Education

• Pearson Edexcel

These examination boards are extremely popular with schools in England and Wales, and offer overseas international schools the facility to enter pupils for IGCSE and/or GCSE qualifications.

THE INTERNATIONAL GENERAL CERTIFICATE OF SECONDARY EDUCATION (IGCSE)

The International GCSE (IGCSE) is an international version of the GCSE examinations taken in the UK. It is specifically designed for girls living in a range of countries. IGCSE courses last two years and examinations are taken at the end of Year 11, when the majority of girls are aged 15-16. However, there is no age limit as to when these qualifications can be taken.

The IGCSE is an internationally recognised qualification and prepares girls for further academic work, including progression to Advanced Subsidiary and Advanced Level study, Cambridge Pre-U and the IB Diploma Programme. It is recognised by academic institutions and employers around the world.

In some subjects, for example Mathematics and English as a Second Language, candidates must be entered at one of two levels, either Extended (Higher) or Core (Foundation). Candidates who fail to reach the standard necessary for the award of a grade receive a U (Unclassified).

Since 1994, a starred A grade (A*) has been awarded to candidates who achieve extremely high A grades; this grade denotes exceptional achievement.

ADVICE TO GIRLS

• A balance of subjects keeps your options open as you move on to Key Stage 5 (Years 12 and 13); most universities and employers prefer this. It is not possible to take everything so if you can rule out particular areas of study you know you do not need, this would be of benefit.

• Get some careers guidance: for example, if you want to be an Architect, you need I/GCSE Art. Advice can come from your subject teachers, your Form Tutor, your Head of Year, the Deputy Heads, the Headmistress and your parents. It is also advisable to do some research online.

• It is often best to select subjects you enjoy studying, as it will be easier to motivate yourself. Subjects you enjoy make you feel good, and you are more likely to work enthusiastically and succeed.

• Do not choose a subject because your friend does. There is a good chance you will be in completely different classes. We are all different and have different skills and talents.

• Do not choose a subject because you like the teacher. There is no guarantee a particular teacher will be available to teach you.

• Be careful not to choose a subject just because you think it is needed for a career that appeals to you. If you do not like the subject, the chances are you will not like the career.

ADVICE TO PARENTS

Before choosing KS4 options, please consider the following:

• Assess whether your daughter knows what she wants to do in the future.

• Assess whether certain options at IGCSE are required for further study.

• Establish what is involved in the IGCSE subjects (look at curriculum material in this booklet and on exam board websites and talk to teachers if you need to know more).

• Assess the subjects your daughter enjoys.

• Assess the subjects your daughter is good at.

• Assess how many IGCSEs your daughter can manage (realistically).

• Discuss option choices with your daughter.

You must submit your daughter’s ‘Options Choice Form’ to Saiqa Liaqat, Second Master by Thursday 7th March 2024. Please keep a copy for your records.

HOMEWORK IN YEARS 10 AND 11

Homework is an essential part of Key Stage 4. Girls are expected to complete 90 – 150 minutes each night in order to be successful.

The Pupil Planner is crucial for organisation and progression of girls in any Key Stage at Sherborne Qatar School for Girls. Parents should be pro-active in checking that homework is done. Homework is also posted on Teams.

ACTIVITIES

All girls are expected to participate in the extra-curricular activities provided by the school. Additional skills are developed, and these activities also provide an opportunity for social development and time away from the pressures of academia.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW MANY SUBJECTS CAN MY DAUGHTER STUDY?

The majority of girls will take 8 subjects, with some changes depending upon the English iGCSE taken, in addition to the MoEHE guidance in the Arabic and Islamic Studies requirements.

CAN MY DAUGHTER TAKE BOTH ENGLISH AND ARABIC?

This is possible, and these are separate Key Stage 4 subjects.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND ENGLISH 2ND LANGUAGE?

English language is suitable for native speakers or those with extremely good second language ability. English 2nd language is accepted as an indication of proficiency in English.

28. Options Booklet - Key Stage 4

CAN MY DAUGHTER STUDY ALL THREE SCIENCES?

All girls must study at least two of the sciences; biology, chemistry and physics. We offer a choice of science subjects within the core curriculum which will be guided in terms of how many (one or two) by the school. For some girls, they will be guided to study a single subject and others two sciences leading to either one or two i/GCSEs. For girls with an interest in this area, there is also the option to take all three: biology, chemistry and physics, each examined as separate i/GCSE subjects.

WHAT HAPPENS IF NOT ENOUGH GIRLS CHOOSE A PARTICULAR SUBJECT?

We reserve the right to close an option if too few girls have chosen it. However, this step will only be taken in extreme circumstances. If this is necessary, we will inform those parents whose daughters are affected. Girls will be allocated to their second-choice subject if the first is not available.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY DAUGHTER CHANGES HER MIND IN THE COMING WEEKS?

We will do all that we can to accommodate any changes of mind, but if a particular class is already full then the change will not be possible.

WHEN IS THE YEAR 9 PARENTS EVENING FOR OPTIONS?

All Year 9 parents along with their daughters should attend on Monday 4th March
