I am constantly aware of the privilege that it is to be Headmaster of one of the country’s truly great schools. To be a dai y witness to the extraordinary panoply of our boys’ achievements, set against the backdrop of Sherborne’s gorgeous architectural heritage, is a very special thing. My daily interactions with the boys and the opportunity to see them thrive and grow as individuals is a source of both joy and inspiration. All our boys are d fferent and each makes his own distinctive contribution to the School. What unites them is a deep-seated kindness, a willingness to get stuck in and a quiet but pervasive pride in being Shirburnians

Whilst undoubtedly a tremendous privilege, my ro e also brings great respons bilities, most obviously to ensure that the boys are safe and happy, stimu ated by the education they receive and excited by the myriad opportunities that the School affords them Linked to this is the obl gation to ensure that Sherborne remains at the forefront of educat onal th nking and a standard bearer for the pursuit of genu ne excellence And this in turn requires us careful y to balance maintenance of our traditiona values with a wi lingness to embrace the chal enges and opportunities presented by a highly dynamic external env ronment

M A N

So on behalf of the Trustees and the whole Foundation, thank you for everything you do to support Sherborne School W E L C O M E

I hope that, on your next v s t to the School, you will agree that we are getting that balance right We continue to show great respect for our traditions and heritage whilst engaging enthusiastically w th new approaches to teaching and learning, inc uding the use of Artificia Intelligence (we even have our own AI, Sherbot, someth ng of which I hope A an Turing would approve) We also continue to nvest in the best teachers and facilities to ensure that we are cont nual y developing and mproving our prov s on in areas of tradit onal strength Two obv ous examples of this are music and sport, where new, state of the art facil ties underpin our determination to attract the brightest talent and create the conditions for it to flourish A th rd strand of this involves our drive further to expand our capacity to award transformational means-tested bursaries, allowing outstanding boys from less advantaged financia backgrounds both to benef t from and enrich Sherborne’s vibrant educational culture

In doing these th ngs the importance of donors is incalculable Neither the new Music School (2010) nor the redeveloped and extended Sports Centre (2024) would have been possible without the generosity of many Old Shirburnians, parents, grandparents and others Equally the number of boys we could support through our bursary funds

would be far fewer were it not for the many supporters who have given so generously to the Foundat on

Like so many of our great schoo s, Sherborne was built upon phi anthropy Countless ndiv duals have shown us extraordinary generosity over the years, donating amounts large and small to help us make a posit ve difference to the boys we are privileged to educate and the wor d into which they then make the r way I am delighted that th s culture of altruism and the commitment to Sherborne’s enduring values remains so strong For that, and for the support of each and every one of our donors, I am deeply grateful Thank you

I’m pleased to see the reemergence of this report to donors, as it’s timely Your fabulous generosity has enabled the redevelopment of the Sports Centre and much else besides. I hope that many of you will have the chance to return to School and see the impact these new facilities are having for current and future generations of Shirburnians and members of our local community

I’d ike to thank our former Head of Foundation Adrian Ballard and his colleagues for the r tireless work and many triumphs as well as welcome Richard Hunt, our new Head of Foundation He’s made a cracking start and I hope many of you wil have the opportunity to meet him over the coming months

You'll read on the following pages just what an impact [your] philanthropy has And, wh lst I won’t be the first Foundation Chair to say it, that support has never been more valuab e as we face headwinds and increasing compet tion

Sherborne is a school that was founded on philanthropy. From those early days of creating classrooms and the chapel through to in more recent years the Science Block and Music School, every stage has been made possible by the generosity of our community.

Thank you to every single person who has continued that thread of philanthropy today

Over the ast four years, you have he ped us build an incredib e Sports Centre, prov ded the opportunity to come to Sherborne to many boys from ess advantaged backgrounds and you have helped us prov de a range of co-curricular activ ties that enrich the l ves of the boys and expand their horizons

The Sports Centre is, yes, about supporting elite schoo sports players to develop their strength and ski ls It is also about making sport part of the daily live of all our boys irrespective of whether they are in the first team It is about supporting concentration and underp nning the abi ity to learn in a classroom Sport in the School s fundamental y about helping the boys deve op healthy active lifesty es that will stand them in good stead as they go onto their careers

Bursaries are central to ensuring that we have a balanced cohort of boys in each year, learning to work together whatever their fam ly backgrounds Your support has made a Sherborne education within reach of many for whom it was a financial imposs bil ty We are the richer as a School for their involvement

Many have supported our cocurr cular opportunities Sometimes n memory of an OS for whom a particular pro ect was their passion or your own passion which you wou d like to make available to boys today

Legacies will a ways be vital to these programmes and projects as they have been over the ast four years Legacies are one way that you can help a place that has been pivota in your life to continue to do that or others in the future Imagine the mpact of your bequest echoing through the corridors and classrooms of Sherborne, empowering young people in generations to come

Thank you to everyone who has supported the Schoo in all the different ways that you have We stand on your shou ders

Our new Sports Centre stands as an unequivocal testament to Sherborne School's unwavering dedication to excellence in every aspect. It is not merely a facility; it is a beacon of innovation and progress, heralding a new era of athletic prowess and achievement The cutting-edge design and state-of-the-art amenities e evate the standard of sporting infrastructure to unparalleled heights, setting a precedent for excellence that reverberates throughout our commun ty.

At the heart of the impressive complex are two expansive sports halls, inc uding the appropriately named Mike Davis Hall These serve as the epicentre for act vities ranging from badminton, basketba l, indoor hockey, and futsal to cricket nets and general sporting endeavours. W ith ample space and modern infrastructure, ath etes of all leve s can hone their ski s, engage in spirited house competitions, and help foster a lifelong apprec ation of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle

In addit on, the indoor cl mbing centre, elevates the thri l of adventure to new heights as boys can test their agil ty, strength and problem-solving abilities in a safe and controlled environment The ropes wall and bouldering space not only offer a unique recreational outlet but also promote teamwork, perseverance, and mental resi ience – qualities essentia for success both on and off the sports field

The four squash courts, cater to enthus asts of th s fast-paced and strateg c sport From beginners seeking to learn the fundamentals to seasoned p ayers aiming to refine their technique, these courts provide the perfect setting for intense matches and friendly

competitions P us, the new f tness suite and performance gyms have been meticulously designed to meet the diverse fitness needs and aspirations of our boys Whether they are recreat onal users pursuing strength training and cardiovascular workouts, or pathway athletes on special sed exerc se programs, students have access to an array of h gh-qua ity equipment and expert guidance

Beyond its impress ve facil ties, the Sports Centre embodies Sherborne School's unwavering commitment to holistic education and the development of well-rounded individuals By provid ng boys with opportunities to engage in a variety of sports and recreat onal activit es, the Centre nurtures essential ife skills such as disc pline, resi ience, teamwork, and leadership Whether on the court, the cl mb ng wall, or in the gym, students learn va uable lessons that extend far beyond the realm of sports, prepar ng them to excel in the classroom, in their careers and in life

The climbing wall consists of both a boulder ng wall and a top rope wall Both walls provide a wide var ety of cl mb ng routes of different d fficulties ranging from simple, easy and straight forward routes to phys cally demanding routes that cha lenge our problem so ving skill as well

Us ng the School climbing wall, my abil ty in cl mbing has s gnificantly mproved as both my strength and technique can be eff ciently trained In terms of climbing grades, in boulder ng my level went from V4-V5 2 years ago to now V6-V7 soon approaching the V8 diff culty range For top rope climbing (French grades) I went from around 6a – 6b+ to now 7a+ - 7b This improvement in c imbing al owed me to place 2nd in bouldering for the junior category in the last inter-independent school c imbing competition which is a so 3rd p ace in boulder ng for both the junior and senior category

The new Sports Centre and its facilities have he ped me develop as a sportsman I use the M ke Davis Ha l for indoor hockey and cricket nets wh ch he p with my sk ll development The performance gym has also been hugely beneficial for my athletic development and I really enjoy the range of equipment

I believe the Sherborne Sports Centre is very important for my deve opment as a sportsman, whatever sport I am playing For example, I frequently use the Sports Hal for pre-season Rugby and Footbal , as wel as using the Sports Hall for w nter nets Cricket The Performance Gym and/or the Main Gym are places that I a so use very often, whether for HPP, or just a gym session n the even ng. I have also used the Spinning Bikes, as our coaches like to test our Pre-Season fitness on them

It has been br lliant to have the golf S m at schoo this year W ith the wet W nter, having an indoor opt on has helped keep me on top of my golf game To keep moving forward in golf nowadays it s vital to have access to all the stats possible such as clubhead speed and distances, and the Sim is a great and exciting way to do this The Sim has allowed me to go back on the golf course with that techn cal knowledge to see my game improve

For a number of families, bursaries are the only way that their son/s can benefit from an incredible Sherborne education. Your support has enabled Ottaker and Aneurin Denham 2023 leavers to fully utilise the full spectrum of academic, sporting, music and co-curricular elements that fuse together at Sherborne.

As an Academic scholar and bursary recipient I got involved in so many aspects of the School

As a young boy, I adopted an Orangutan in Borneo. I developed this interest by undertaking an EPQ at Sherborne which allowed me to research orangutan conservation in greater detai I was able to get a greater grasp and understanding of topics of Zoology and Natural Sciences that I will study at university (Leeds) from October 2024.

Sherborne allowed me to ga n an ncred ble education with the pathway to many exciting things

I am very proud to be an Old Shirburn an

Q

Starting at Sherborne in 2018 as a bursary recipient and academic scholar was an incredible opportunity. I got involved from 3rd form in Model United Nations (MUN), an international society, which has enriched my knowledge of current affairs and international relations. Its universal appeal provided me with avenues to new experiences The MUN helped me build both confidence and communication sk lls, th s translated into presenting school assemblies about the work of the MUN.

Wh le I grow in my stud es, I know my time at Sherborne w ll aid me in my future achievements and my asp ration to be called to the Bar

Persona ly a bursary was transformative and has afforded for me incredible opportunities which I am forever grateful

Why does philanthropy matter to Old Shirburnians and Parents? To find out, Freddie Fineman (L6e) and Tom Foster (L6a) asked two Trustees of the Sherborne School Foundation, Jimmy Carro l (c 06) and William Paul (c 91). W H Y D O E S S

Jimmy:

“This goes back to being an Old Shirburnian and I think it’s the camarader e you get being part of Sherborne Education is the sing e most important th ng in life, you never stop learn ng, and Sherborne g ves you the bui ding blocks

It’s a so about the relat onsh ps you form, the ways you start to think and for myself that very entrepreneurial spir t was abso utely formed wh lst at school That’s why it matters to me now ”

William:

“For me, Sherborne was the very first and probably the most sol d bui ding b ock of everything that has gone into my success in my career Sherborne gave me independence, taught me to get up on my own two feet, to be resi ient, and to be a self-starter, so I am massively grateful

The point of al this is finding different ways to say thank you, of offering up further opportunity for boys coming through the system who can benef t from Sherborne n the way I have Sherborne has given me a massive leg up in ife, and I would love other boys to be able to take advantage of that ”

THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT SHERBORNE HAS CHANGED SINCE YOU WERE AT THE SCHOOL. AS A TRUSTEE, WHAT ARE YOUR VIEWS ON CHANGE?

Jimmy:

“The beauty about Sherborne and why I am involved as a trustee is because I absolutely see it as an education fac lity that has adapted and has embraced

change H story has been allowed to play an important part in looking forward to how we educate young men

A l the changes I’ve seen have been pos tive so much so that I’m slightly envious of you at school now because I think t’s a much better School, and I’m real y p eased can do a little bit to help drive that forward ”

William:

“The b ggest thing I have seen in terms of change is that the boys are much more prepared for the outside world than we ever were The School s incredib e at preparing, frankly, a fantastic generation of young professionals to go out and take on the wor d ”

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE SETS SHERBORNE ASIDE FROM OTHER SCHOOLS?

Jimmy:

“In my day Sherborne was not the top academic schoo , and its not the top academic schoo now Of course, there are boys who absolute y exce in academia, and we are seeing that from the results that are publ shed, achieving far more than I ever wou d have dreamt of But you ’ ve got to be somewhere you feel happy and comfortable, and I think Sherborne br ngs the right balance It provides a rounded education w th some really good sport and music and the facil ties behind that And the town and the countryside are a huge part of t – it’s the perfect environment You are in and amongst a lot of nature, and I’m a big fan of that ”

William:

“If you read the OS Record, the last five pages on what people have been up to are bril iant There are people in the armed forces, people who have wr tten books, peop e off do ng charity work in East Africa Whatever it might be, you name it, a Sh rburnian is do ng it And I think that incred ble roundedness s something that makes Sherborne so

identifiab e I can almost spot a Shirburnian from a mi e away because of this gen al, rounded characteristic they have ”

WHY IS INVESTING PHILANTHROPICALLY IN SHERBORNE SCHOOL IMPORTANT TO YOU?

J mmy:

“Seeing the development of a new generation come through, and the enr chment that you get from that, and how you can help it in some respects, is far better than any stocks and shares or returns and nvestments ”

William:

“For me the benefit in philanthropy is first and foremost giv ng thanks, be ng able to say, ‘ you know what, I really appreciate everything the School has done for me ’ It’s about being able to give back and inf uence the future of other boys, to open up opportunity for others ”

In speaking to both Jimmy and Wi liam, t has delighted us to hear that there are peop e beyond the gates to the Courts who have, and still do, care so deeply for the future of Sherborne, particularly looking forward to the many years of change due to come. Be ng able to invest philanthrop cally has provided them an opportunity to express their gratitude to the Schoo , to help provide others with the ife-shaping exper ence they had at Sherborne, and more As Wi liam described, there is no measure for the emotional profit this reaps We are eternally indebted to them for their kind and continued support

We are incred bly grateful to all alumni and friends who p edge to leave a legacy in support of Sherborne The Bow Soc ety recognises those ndividuals who have chosen to make this most special and persona of donations, in support of the long-term future of Sherborne. Over 130 alumn and friends have k ndly informed the Schoo of their intention to leave gifts to Sherborne n their Wills The following have chosen to be acknowledged as members of the Bow Society and t s our pleasure to recognise them here:
