Brand Identity Development of a new corporate brand identity system, core visual messaging, look-and-feel of brand guidelines.

This government department was looking to change the way it was perceived. Their new brand identity required a fresh, modern and forward thinking approach.

The brand signature was influenced by a traditional wood carving found in Ajman’s national museum. The new identity has helped Ajman’s Culture & media depart re-launch and re-position themselves within the community as a supportive and visionary department.

Invitation for brand launch The launch event was attended by over 30 key government officials, three members of the Ajman royal family, including the Crown Prince of Ajman. Coverage of the event appeared in all major English and Arabic dailies and TV.

Celebration of Peace - Greeting card for print and online Shared with a wide array of nationalities, its imperative to instil cultural sensitivity in the design.

The visual story is composed using the Petrofac droplet from the logo, utilising the brand mark within the design, whilst providing a beautiful greeting card.

I then directed the animated version.

Green Campaign ENOC (the Emirates National Oil Company) is the Dubai Government owned diversified energy group. ENOC is a multi-interest oil and gas group and has operations in Dubai and Northern Emirates.

The company required a campaign highlighting the uses of energy and the opening of self service stations. The visual language represents how energy is used around the city.

Annual Review Abu Dhabi National Tanker Co (ADNATCO) was established in 1975 for the transportation of petroleum products. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC).

National Gas Shipping Company (NGSCO) was formed in December 1993 to transport liquefied natural gas (LNG) on behalf of Abu Dhabi Gas Liquefaction Company (ADGAS).

ADNATCO & NGSCO required this informative communications for their organisation. My design was produced in both English and Arabic formats.

Promoting products and services efficiently Qatar Engineering & Construction Company (Qcon) is the leading National EPC & Maintenance Contractor in the Oil & Gas, Petrochemical, Fertilizer and Power industries.

Qcon wanted to radically improve their marketing activity and collateral.

They were so impressed with the new re-design of their corporate brochure, further marketing plans and brand management were requested.

Brand Identity Revitalisation Gulf Greetings General Trading LLC is a holding company based in Dubai, focused on providing people with products that help express their feelings and make their loved ones happy.

The Gulf Greetings brand was outdated and in desperate need of refreshing. The client wished on retaining a butterfly symbol and requested a contemporary feel. I used stylish typography to wake up the word mark and created a unique illustrated butterfly.

Supporting Accessible Sailing - Yacht branding Sailability is a world wide, not-for profit, volunteer based movement that facilitates sailing for everyone regardless of ability. Dubai Offshore Sailing Club Sailability is committed to giving people with special needs the opportunity to learn to sail, offering sailing programs to students from special needs schools.

Eden Yachting asked me to create branding in support of DOSC Sailability for their yacht.

The yacht graphics derive from the cheerful hues and shapes of the specially adapted access dinghies in use at DOSC.

Supporting Accessible Sailing - Yacht branding As a personal gift from myself to the charity I refreshed the DOSC Sailability logo. The original DOSC Sailability logo is shown below, along side a further development by myself. The chosen logo is on the following page.

The name ‘Rat Race’ was also required as typographic logo for the stern.

‘Rat Race’ being the name of the vessel.

This luxury, high quality furniture required a brand identity that reflected their status and positioning in the market.

As well as creating their identity, I directed and designed an advertising campaign that clearly demonstrated their furniture was bespoke and custom crafted specifically for the requirements of their clients.

Character Design Bob the garden gnome is a fun character created for the Garden Furniture Store. He became an integral part of the branding and was later produced in product form as a gift item at the GFS store.

The Garden Furniture Store is part of Global Furniture Solutions group of companies.

Rescue Training

Scuba Steve Steve Wood is an independent PADI Staff Instructor who lives and works in Dubai, UAE. Steve offers courses in affiliation with Al Boom Diving, the UAE’s leading 5* PADI Scuba Dive Centre.

Steve had a logo and a homemade website. I refreshed the logo and created his brand, I personally did a photoshoot of his Rescue Training Course which I then developed into learning aids for his students.

Brand Identity The Palisades is a major mixed-use development covering 138 hectares owned

by Sheikh Issa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The architecture is inspired by the Georgian, Regent and Victorian eras.

Sheikh Issa and his wife had a real personal interest in the project and it was their love of swans that inspired the brand identity for this unique classical development.

A Dubai Life - Brochure Designed to capture the essence of Dubai city. This coffee table book contained images of Dubai’s most luxurious properties. This entailed a photoshoot over a period of several days at some of the cities most prestigious homes and locations.

I assisted and directed a commissioned photoshoot for the book, ensuring that the photos captured the required elements I required for the design.

Having already been named, the client was looking for a unique brand identity.

Dubai Aluminium Company Limited - DUBAL

Seasons Greetings Dubai Aluminium Company Limited (DUBAL) owns and operates one of the world’s largest aluminium smelters.

DUBAL required a set of greeting cards for Ramadan, Eid and Christmas.

I created a complimentary set of cards portraying an Arabic influence, using illustrations to reflect the nature and harmony of each celebration.

We are different by design by Amanda Sheppard, Senior Designer, UAE

Dubai is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, where people from the East, West, US and Asia have made their homes away from their homeland. Adapting to life in a new country brings challenges but it also opens up a hugely rewarding wealth of knowledge that only living amongst multicultural neighbours can provide.

Professionals in Dubai sometimes have to set aside their natural heritage and its way of thinking. They adapt work depending on the audience, taking into account their customs, the way they live, and the way that business is done. This inevitably affects the designs we use and the way messages are delivered and received. Sometimes everyday familiar graphics and messages that are normal practice in your own homeland could be insulting to others. This makes a deep cultural understanding and awareness critical to the effectiveness and impact of our work.

Over the years there has been a switch in design approaches around the city, adjusting to its changing target audiences. Dubai is an important business hub and travel destination, receiving a lot more international visitors than it used to. Advertising and design used to be predominately Arabic rather than English. But now we are seeing harmonies of Arabic and English design, messages and styles that are aimed at a wider catchment audience of nationalities. The arrival of many more known brands from Europe has caused a turn in advertising going heavily towards the European market styles too. Now agencies with western heritage and local knowledge are perfectly placed to head up campaigns aimed at this wider audience.

Some differences in international design are small but still culturally significant. For instance, designers here can spend quite a few hours graphically tailoring people’s clothing, adding sleeves or adjusting necklines.

But wider issues like typography and colour tastes also differ, and in the Middle East you have to be aware of imagery containing alcoholic beverages or religious shapes.

So if we have to consider all these things in Dubai, what happens when we want to send a campaign all the way around the world? How many times can we change a design before it loses its original impact?

If you’ve ever played Chinese whispers, you know that messages can be distorted beyond recognition as they get passed along a chain. This is when marketers need strong allies in all their target locations worldwide.

Original designs should be sent straight to marketing professionals in each country, not passed along a global chain of translators and designers. This is the best way to ensure cultural sensitivity while maintaining the original style and identity.

This is a comment piece I wrote for Fifth Ring’s quarterly marketing magazine, Five. I have also contributed several illustrations to the last two issues.

The magazine is distributed to over 1500 subscribers in the UK, UAE and US.

Illustration and Brand Identity A fashion designer working for theatre, opera and dance.

This project included coming up with the company name. The name ‘Masquerade’ reflects the drama and beauty of costume design.

Temporarily hiding the real personality of a performer, yet transforming them with fabric artistry, so they can entertain as another character.

Brand Identity Created for my personal use. Mandalay is formed of two best friends addicted to travel, that share a passion for buying locally made and handcrafted gifts from Asia, then selling them to friends in Dubai.

The treasures bought on our travels range from handmade scarves, textiles, silver jewellery, trinkets and anything skilfully handmade they know others will find as desirable as they do.

The name Mandalay comes from a beautiful place in Myanmar/Burma and we both felt it aptly represented our love and passion for the region.

The tagline ‘Treasures from cherished travels’ describe exactly what the gifts mean to us, and the fun Jane and I have finding them.

The Frog Prince

Water colour painting One of my friends is a collector of frogs (not the live kind!), taking this as inspiration for a Christmas gift, I created The Frog Prince for them.

After sketching my work, I used water colours then embellished the final piece with gold metallic paint.

The actual painted frog (not the frame) measures 6cm in height.

English Winter Silhouette

Water colour painting I have always been inspired by the leafless trees of winter, they look so beautiful against the colourful and clear sunsets of a winter sky.

After roughly sketching the tree, I created a pastel colour wash for the sky, then used black paint with a fine brush to create the silhouette of an English winter tree.

I have placed the pencil against my painting to show the size and detail of the brush work.
