Wisconsin’s Environment Under Threat

The Walker-Trump scheme to weaken the DNR and the EPA :: BY A.J. MACDONALD

As environmental protections continue to take beatings under the administrations of Scott Walker and Donald Trump, weighing the implications can be overwhelming. Assaults on Wisconsin’s natural resources are coming along many fronts.

George Meyer, former secretary of the Department of Natural Resources and current executive director of the Wisconsin Wildlife Fund, as well as Amber Meyer Smith, director of programs and government relations at Clean Wisconsin, cite worsening water conditions among Wisconsin’s most troubling environmental ills.

When it comes to water issues plaguing Wisconsin, we’re fighting upstream and thanks to Walker, have no lifejackets to help us along the way.

Trouble spots can easily be identified. One third of the Kewaunee County wells that provide drinking water do not meet safe standards. Runoff from large farms is polluting waterways around the state; metals may be leaching into groundwater surrounding frac sand mines. Phosphorus pollution, which stimulates algae growth and decimates aquatic ecosystems, is another pervasive problem, as evidenced by a dead zone in Green Bay. Lead pollution is yet another culprit plaguing Wisconsin’s waters.

“These are pretty serious water issues that we need to think about holistically, and we need to think about how we solve them, not how we run away from having to deal with them,” Meyer Smith says. “And unfortunately, it’s been more the latter. It’s been, ‘How do we roll back what exists now?’ and that’s just not the right direction for a state whose identity is water.”

Crippling the DNR

Meyer is careful to point out that these concerns are the outcomes of a department crippled by policy and not of disinvested employees.

“The whole time I was in the agency, and I was working my way up and then when I was secretary, the Department of Natural Resources was viewed by its peer agencies as one of the top five agencies in its classes in the country,” he said. “Now it’s mediocre or less. And that’s not because of the staff—it’s because of the policies that are being carried out.”

Walker’s cuts to the DNR’s budget have meant significant losses of research scientist and educator staffers—and therefore a gutting of expert knowledge from within the department. Startling deficiencies in the DNR’s performance have taken place in recent years as a result.

One such example is the DNR’s failure to ensure that the legislature is equipped with the intelligence needed to make informed decisions regarding environmental protections.

Meyer highlighted recently proposed legislation that would allow the baiting and feeding of deer, which has been prohibited in order to stymie the spreading of chronic wasting disease. CWD, a neurological disease which deer in 43 counties have tested positive for and is always fatal, is spread by saliva. The DNR didn’t show up to testify on this legislation when it was presented.

“That is a perfect example of why we need to have the DNR do its job,” Meyer says. “That’s what they get paid for. That’s just one example—that has happened 20 times in the last five or six years. And the resource gets hurt when that happens.”

Inadequacies in monitoring agricultural runoff as well as upholding federal water and air pollution regulations have also trickled down from DNR staffing cuts.

State auditors discovered a backlog of permits for large farms in 2016, and in 2014, the EPA had to force the DNR to adopt clean air regulations that it should have already been abiding by. The EPA cited 75 deficiencies in the DNR’s water regulation in 2011.

Meyer contrasted these rampant shortcomings with his own tenure within the DNR, during which he said the EPA’s enforcement was requested only one time.

“This is unprecedented,” he said. “It’s an oversight of responsibility.”

What’s worse, Meyer pointed out, is the EPA’s weakened capability to fulfill a watchdog role as it readies for leadership under someone it had to defend itself against in court (EPA chief Scott Pruitt has sued the EPA 13 times), and a proposed 31% funding cut—the largest cut to any one entity proposed in Trump’s budget.

“Now we’re not going to have that shield, that ability for someone to come in and force the DNR to do what it should,” he said.

The DNR’s cherished Wisconsin Natural Resources Magazine and state parks have also taken hits under Walker. A reorganization of the DNR has been much talked about since proposed as an idea

by Republican State Assemblyman Adam Jarchow in October 2016, but went unmentioned in Walker’s latest budget, signifying that proposition may go unpursued.

As far as the purging of the DNR’s magazine, many are at a loss regarding the motive. The publication serves as an effective means to inform the SHEPHERD EXPRESS

public more deeply on issues under the DNR’s jurisdiction, and provide explanations as to the DNR’s actions and decisions. Authored largely by employees, the magazine is published at no cost to the DNR and has served more than 80,000 subscribers. “Any successful business tells people what their services and products are,� Meyer said. “That’s what the DNR basically does, they have products and services in the natural resource and conservation areas. And they didn’t consider that part of their core business.�

State parks were defunded by Walker in 2015, leaving them to rely entirely on fees paid by visitors. Walker’s latest budget proposes increases to user fees. Meyer warns that continually rising user fees will mean decreased access to parks for low-income families.

He also expressed concern regarding the DNR’s ability to function efficiently should it see a reorganization, which could mean responsibilities disseminated into five separate offices. “All these programs need to coordinate on a daily basis,â€? Meyer noted. “It would cost more because you’d have more top people getting high salaries because you’ve got more agencies‌water and fish go together—those people should be talking to each other.â€?

Trump signed March 28 essentially carves a path to strip consideration of environmental health in any governmental decision-making, a measure that had been woven into policymaking under the Obama administration.

Greg Nemet, associate professor at the La Follette School of Public Affairs and Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, highlights five key proposed actions to watch.

Trump has proposed reviews of vehicle efficiency standards, the Clean Power Plan, methane regulations and coal leasing. Additionally, Trump wants to reassess the economic impact of one ton of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere, which helps shape greenhouse gas regulations. “That’s five activities that they haven’t said they’re going to reverse, but they’ve said they’re going to review, and if they did reverse them, that’s going in the opposite direction of what we need to do,� Nemet said. “We need more stringent vehicle efficiency standards, we need more efficient power plants and more low-carbon power plants, and we need to reduce methane leakage. “Those cuts that have been proposed would be devastating to the EPA,� he continued. “Congress eventually comes up with its own budget and approves its own budget. What about that little agreement the U.S. entered into along with 194 other nations to commit to deterring climate change? While exiting the Paris Agreement would require jumping through hoops, Nemet points out that a more likely route for the Trump administration may be to simply not live up to the promises made.

The ramifications? “You would start to wonder if other countries would continue their efforts,�

Nemet said. “I think that’s the biggest danger.�

Another drastic measure proposed is a 97% cut to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). Favored on both sides of the aisle, the GLRI is responsible for the majority of protections and restorations of the Great Lakes. “This is really sort of a no-brainer of a program that has been proposed for elimination,�

Meyer Smith said of the GLRI. “That is pretty shocking, that such a popular bipartisan program could be under attack like that. It definitely makes you question where our priorities are.�

Meyer Smith also questions Trump’s reasoning with regard to energy, and his affinity for coal. “When you look at the facts on energy sources like coal, they just don’t add up,� she said. “It’s a dying industry, the jobs aren’t there anymore, but there seems to be this need to cling to it for some reason.�

Meyer, Meyer Smith and Nemet all agree that if this widespread lack of respect for science and for the environment continues, we’ll all pay the price. Nemet noted the health impacts of heat

waves induced by climate change, and outlined the upsides of clean energy. “When we decarbonize, we get benefits, like less asthma and respiratory disease, which is one of the aspects of the Clean Power Plan,� he said.

Meyer Smith offered a laundry list of consequences should we continue down the path of negligence toward science and environmental protections: “We’ll jeopardize one of our core economic drivers of tourism—because clean water is so integral‌ We’ll continue to lose the potential for job creation in terms of the burgeoning new economies like the clean energy economy. We’ll jeopardize our citizens’ health.

These cuts—especially to EPA—are going to be really devastating for some of the health-related programs. Not to mention the health impacts of climate change and air pollution that are going to continue to grow and they’re going to end up costing us money, a lot of money, in the long run in terms of healthcare costs.�

Meyer Smith emphasized the need for investing in the prioritization of natural resources “We need to make investments in the scientists, the people that we entrust to enforce laws, we need to make investments in protecting clean water, preventing pollution in the first place,� she said. “We need to really prioritize our natural resources for the economic benefits and health benefits they bring—not treat them as commodity.�

Sheriff Clarke’s Fear of Snowflakes ::BY JOEL MCNALLY

W

hen Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke threatened to personally eliminate a citizen who looked at him wrong on an airplane, he used a bizarre slur. He called the guy “snowflake.”

There’s actually a very good reason you might not know the term. That means you never visit racist white supremacist websites.

Those disgusting sites have created a brandnew vocabulary of hate for anyone who opposes their vile philosophy. Besides “snowflake,” other commonly used white supremacist epithets include “libtard” and “cuck.” I’ll try to explain them. No one else should ever have to visit the deepest cesspools of the dark web to learn them.

Which raises the question why a prominent African American sheriff would be fluent in insults used by bigots who dream of establishing a “whites-only” state where they won’t be required by law to treat non-whites as human beings. You know, like the good old days.

But, of course, those same white bigots cheer Clarke’s inflammatory attacks on blacks on Fox News, more than double his taxpayer salary with speaking engagements to rightwing fringe groups and are raising funds to draft Clarke to run against Wisconsin Sen. Tammy Baldwin as “the black Rush Limbaugh with a badge.”

The fundraising effort, run by some pretty sketchy characters, may very well be a financial scam. But that’s always been the suspicion about Clarke’s personally lucrative political career.

Unfit for Office

Bullying a citizen was fairly minor among the offenses that make Clarke unfit for public office. Far more serious were four unexplained deaths in his jail last year. A mentally troubled inmate died of severe dehydration pleading for a drink after his cell’s water was shut off as punishment. A baby died sometime during the six hours the mother giving birth was ignored by staff.

But Clarke’s reaction after an innocuous airplane encounter showed his sheer contempt for the public. It would be difficult to imagine any milder slight of Clarke than occurred when Dan Black boarded a flight from Dallas to Milwaukee in January the day the Green Bay Packers played the Dallas Cowboys.

Black was surprised to see Clarke dressed garishly, and not in Clarke’s usual garish dress

as a Wild West gunslinger. Clarke, whose uncle Franklin Clarke was a wide receiver for the Cowboys in the 1960s, was wearing Cowboys team garb.

Baffled by Clarke’s odd Wisconsin fashion choice, Black asked if he was the sheriff.

Clarke said he was and belligerently inquired whether Black had a problem with that. Black simply shook his head and continued to his seat.

Clarke Frightened by Headshake

That was enough to get Black detained by six uniformed deputies along with Clarke when Black landed in Milwaukee. He was interrogated for about 15 minutes and then escorted from the airport by deputies. Black has since filed a lawsuit charging he was illegally detained.

Attacking Black later for complaining, swaggering tough guy Clarke sounded like a child in the streets frightened by the “mean mugging” of Black’s terrifying headshake.

“The Sheriff does not have to wait for some goof to assault him,” Clarke posted on Facebook. “He reserves the reasonable right to pre-empt a possible assault… Cheer up, Snowflake. If Sheriff Clarke were to really harass you, you wouldn’t be around to whine about it.”

Many serious questions arise when a sheriff threatens to exterminate a citizen. I was curious about a minor one. When did “snowflake,” every one of which is supposed to be unique, become a dirty word? That’s when I discovered so-called “alt-right” websites have their own

unique vocabulary. (Their first totally made-up word was “alt-right,” a sanitized description also adopted by the media to avoid more accurately describing Trump supporters as racists and bigots.)

Those sites use “snowflake” as a somewhat effeminate term for fragile, precious LGBT folks or anyone else not nearly as tough as the sort of manly real men who wear cowboy hats and boots or possibly Cowboys jerseys.

If that sounds like a rather juvenile idea of manhood, you’re onto something. Another popular insult is “libtard,” combining “liberal” and “retard.” Decent people teach their children not to use the term “retard,” but these really aren’t decent people.

Another strange new epithet is “cuck,” specifically aimed at wimpy conservatives who aren’t man enough to promote out-and-out race hatred and white supremacy. The long form is “cuckservative.” The stem is a really archaic term “cuckold,” describing a weak, pathetic male whose wife is having an affair. The similarity to vulgar slang for male genitalia is too obvious to be accidental.

Notice how all these new right-wing insults reek with macho bluster about the incredible manly manhood of the bully employing them.

They protest way too much.

But one thing is certain. No matter how much Clarke parrots the language and ideology of white supremacists who proclaim their adoration for him, he’ll never qualify for admittance into their racist “whitesonly” paradise.

Trump’s On-the-Job Training

M

ost of us learned a lot in our early jobs through some very basic on-thejob training, (OJT) which is, of course, very good. As you get older and have gained a lot of experience and wisdom, the on-the-job training in a new position is less pronounced, but there is always some. For a new president, even one who has been a governor or senator, nothing in their past experiences fully prepares them for what they are going to be confronted with as president and commander-in-chief, but in Trump’s case, it is just far more extreme.

Looking back over the past 100-plus years, there is no individual who has been a real serious candidate for president, let alone one that actually got elected president, who had less knowledge and understanding of how the world really works and all of its complexities.

His ignorance of the world is absolutely amazing. Perhaps it is because he refuses to read any complex material about world affairs. He didn’t even go to the briefings by his intelligence experts early in his administration. On the positive side, he is slowly learning that it is very different and far simpler to build hotels and golf courses in foreign countries or to run the Miss Universe Competition than it is to understand the intricacies and complexities of international relations, international economics and international trade policies. As a result, he seems more willing to listen to the experts and modify his positions.

Is Trump slowly realizing he is way over his head?

Trump’s OJT would be fascinating to watch if it wasn’t so pathetic and potentially dangerous. After pushing Paul Ryan’s naïve health care plan that Trump barely understood and only 17% of the public supported, he concluded that, gee, this health care policy stuff is difficult. Again, one does have to give him some credit in that occasionally when it is pointed out that his policy positions are so ill informed or just wrong, he will quickly change his position. He freely admitted that after about a 10-minute explanation of the history of North Korea by the leader of China, he realized that this Korea stuff is more complicated than he realized. In some cases, he then denies that he ever held his original positions.

More examples. On the campaign trail he repeated, that on day one, he will label China a “currency manipulator,” which he dropped when he learned that it has been years since China tried to artificially devalue its currency and therefore, are not currency manipulators.

Then there was his repeated comments that NATO is obsolete until he met with the head of NATO and learned what NATO actually does and that they have been quite successful and they fight terrorism and are definitely not obsolete. He declares that the Export-Import Bank is useless until someone explained to him what they do and that it helps create many U.S. jobs in our export industries. And there are many more examples. Unfortunately, this uninformed person is no longer just some reality talk show character but rather the president of the United States, the country the world still looks up to and admires. The rest of the civilized world tries to be polite about Trump but are frightfully appalled. Go abroad and the first question you hear is, “What is going on in your country?”

Should we be losing sleep?

Recently, on the more scary side, Trump has learned firsthand how 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles can do wonders for your poll numbers. His recent bombing of Syria and Afghanistan was not an unreasonable action in these two situations, although we know some readers will disagree with that, but we have to make sure he doesn’t get into the habit of bombing some country when he wants to distract Americans from his domestic problems like the FBI investigation into various criminal activities concerning his campaign and Russia. So the real question is how frightened should we be considering the fact that he is also commander-in-chief of the most powerful military in the history of the world.

Despite the comments above, things are definitely improving. Regarding some of the scummiest advisers he has, the media has done a very good job over the past couple of months of investigating and exposing these individuals for who they really are and they are slowly either losing power or being moved out of the administration completely.

Regarding the military and national security, Trump is learning how little he understands and as a result, he is empowering his foreign relations and national security team.

The thing that should still enable you to not lose much sleep over these issues is that his national security team is composed of some serious, experienced adults. Though we don’t generally share their views on many issues, his Secretary of Defense James Mattis, his Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and his National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster are knowledgeable and solid and willing to use force but in a very measured way. They are not going to be attacking North Korea, for example, and even if we have another tragedy like 9/11, we believe they will stand up to Trump and keep his insecure ego in check, so sanity would prevail.

The Shepherd continues to believe that America will get through the four Trump years.

Our country will certainly be bruised up by some reactionary policies but—provided the current energized electorate continues to stay active, informed and involved in monitoring their government—four years from now, America may actually end up being a much stronger and smarter democracy. hink about what sets your favorite Thai restaurant apart from all the others, and thoughtful plating probably doesn’t come to mind. That’s because many—certainly not all, but many—Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese restaurants in Milwaukee seem to believe that a large pile of food will make up for a lack in presentation. And while the flavor of the food is always paramount, thoughtful plate composition and ingredient preparation will always elevate a meal one step higher.

It’s this thoughtfulness that makes eating at AppeThai such a treat, especially when coupled with superbly balanced flavors, something Thai cuisine is well known for but few restaurants actually happen to achieve. espite Wisconsin’s Scandinavian roots, Northern European cuisine has mostly stayed under the radar. While some Norwegian staples such as lutefisk—whitefish prepared with lye—are generally not welcomed by today’s palates, lefse (LEFF-suh) has much broader appeal.

True lefse is a soft flatbread made from dough consisting of riced potatoes (Potato Buds not allowed!), flour, butter and milk or cream. Some recipes also call for a little sugar. The dough is then divided into patties, rolled thin and grilled, resulting in a soft, tasty flatbread. Sometimes referred to as a Norwegian tortilla, lefse is a versatile bread substitute that can be used for sweet or savory snacks, wraps or as an appetizer served with spreads.

Making real lefse the traditional way requires some kitchen gadgets such as a potato ricer; a long, corrugated lefse rolling pin; a turning stick (preferably one with beautiful rosemåling on the handle) to lift and flip the delicate dough once it is rolled thin; and a round lefse grill. For those who want to try lefse without purchasing extra equipment, making a big mess, or traveling Up Nort’ to small bakeries near the Norwegian communities, Countryside Lefse LLC (lefse.com) out of Blair, Wis., makes small-batch lefse distributed throughout southeast Wisconsin under The Hungry Troll brand.

Countryside has been making lefse since the late 1960s, using real potatoes in the dough that is hand-rolled by a crew of 15 employees, according to Marshall Olson, who owns the company with his wife, Amy. Olson’s father, Ronald, started the business. Olson notes most lefse that’s widely available in larger supermarkets is produced in larger batches by machine, often with instant potatoes. “Most companies nowadays use machines or instant potatoes. Very few roll it by hand and use real potatoes. Usually they cheat on one of those two things and, either way it makes the lefse drier,” he said. “It’s one of those foods where you have to make it the way Norwegian settlers used to make it and not cut corners.”

Countryside’s method avoids chemicals and preservatives, so their product doesn’t have a long shelf life, and their distribution is limited.

Outpost Natural Foods carries The Hungry Troll lefse and Countryside lefse can be ordered online through the company’s website. They produce lefse all year long, even though Norwegians traditionally served it only at Christmas.

Olson cites Norske Nook, a Norwegian restaurant and bakery with four locations throughout Northwestern Wisconsin, with popularizing lefse as they have a whole section on their menu dedicated to lefse wraps in varieties such as salmon, pork and breakfast wraps.

For those who might want to try making lefse at home, Lefse Time (lefsetime.com) in Fountain City, Wis., sells lefse baking equipment online.

They also offer classes for those who want to take a road trip to scenic Buffalo County along the Mississippi River.

Lefse has some carbs, but overall it’s a light and healthy staple. A traditional way to enjoy lefse any time is to warm a piece, spread it with a little butter and sugar and roll it jelly roll-style.

The result is definitely smaker godt—the Norwegian term for tasty.

::BY MATTHEW J. PRIGGE ith Ryan Braun about to attain enough major league service time to gain full no-trade rights, the chances that he will spend his entire career with the Brewers have never been better.

Although there is still plenty of time for Braun to consent to a trade or change clubs via free agency, he has a decent chance to join the very select company of major leaguers who appeared as—and only as—members of the Brewers. Robin Yount, who spent every day of his 20year career with the Brewers, is by far the most accomplished of these players. But in the spirit Brewers’ exclusivity, let’s take a look what an all-time only-Brewers team might look like.

Catcher: Dave Nilsson (With Brewers 1992-1999) Nilsson saved his best season for his last, making the AL All-Star team in 1999 and setting career highs in homers and slugging percentage.

His 105 career homers are second only to Yount among career Brewers (active players excluded) and his 837 games played are behind only Yount and Jim Gantner.

First Base: Joey Meyer (1988-1989) Yes, this is how slim the pickings are in this group. The burly native Hawaiian crushed the ball in the minors, including a half-season with the Denver Zephyrs in which he hit 29 homers, but couldn’t deliver in the majors. He was a moderate power threat for two years before he drifted back to the bush leagues.

Second Base: Jim Gantner (1976-1992) “Gumby” played 17 years with the Brewers as a steady-gloved second baseman. Never much with the bat, Gantner once went 1,762 at bats without a homer.

Third Base: Mat Gamel (2008-2012) A hotshot third base prospect before becoming an oft-injured first baseman, Gamel managed only one season of more than 70 at bats and tallied only 240 for his career. Still, with six career homers and a .229 career average, he is the best career Brewers third sacker ever.

Shortstop: Robin Yount (1974-1993) This one really needs no explanation. But for the record, according to Wins Above Replacement (WAR), Yount actually provided more value to the Brewers than every other career Brewer combined.

Outfield: Marshall Edwards (1981-1983) A role player on the Brewers first two playoff team, Edwards was a glove and speed guy, but never developed as a hitter. He was also surprisingly tough to strike out, whiffing just 19 times in 310 career at bats.

Outfield: Dan Thomas (1976-1977) A top prospect who struggled with mental issues, Thomas posted an impressive slash line of .274/.363/.457 over 54 career games. Thomas refused to play on Friday nights and Saturday afternoons because of his religious convictions and later accused the Brewers of persecuting him for his beliefs. Less than three years after his final major league game, he was arrested for the sexual assault of a child. He committed suicide in his jail cell.

Right Handed Pitcher: Bill Wegman (1985-1995) In the “better-than-you-remember” category is Bill Wegman, who had the most career innings of any career-Brewer hurler. Wegman was one of the better pitchers in the AL in 1991, posting a 2.84 ERA and finishing with a 15-7 record.

Left Handed Pitcher: Ted Higuera (1985-1994) The best lefty in team history, Higuera remains overlooked as a franchise icon. He was one of the best pitchers in baseball in the late 1980s before injuries derailed his career just in time for a hefty contract extension to kick in. Higuera attempted a comeback with the Padres in 1995, but failed to make the team.

Relief Pitcher: Jim Austin (1991-1993) Over 100 career innings, all in relief, “Bubba” posted an impressive 3.06 ERA. He was a major part of the bullpen for the 90-win 1992 club, but an injury in 1993 derailed his career. He never pitched in the majors again.

‘Barber of Seville’

MAYHEM AND MERRIMENT AT FLORENTINE OPERA’S ‘BARBER OF SEVILLE’ ::BY STEVE SPICE

he creative versatility of the Florentine Opera’s programming is a living testament to opera as a living art form. Opening this season with the world premiere of Robert Aldridge’s Sister Carrie, they will close 20162017 with the ever-popular Gioachino Rossini favorite, The Barber of Seville, a comic opera that defines the genre with enough buffoonery to fill the stage with endless musical delight. Barber is actually a prequel to Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro and while it may not have the lingering poignancy of Mozart, it’s a lot more fun with Count Almaviva pursuing Rosina in several disguises. The barber has his own agenda but remains supportive of the count’s shenanigans.

As explained by the Florentine’s General Director William Florescu, one of his objectives is to gather a cast of performers “who though they might not be familiar to Milwaukee audiences will come as a pleasant surprise by exceeding listener’s expectations—there are not that many name singers at large but there are many young artists of remarkable talent establishing their reputations round the globe. We have a terrific set of singers for The Barber, but our continuing objective has been the policy of doing a new work each season as well as honoring the repertoire of long-time standards.”

The Barber of Seville is a continuum of zany humor with its own illogical consistency. Rossini’s signature style with its endless runs of scales might best be characterized as coloratura on steroids, but of course that’s part of the fun. As listeners struggle to discern the endless rapid flow of dialogue, we realize that this is operatic satire at its most inventive, requiring singers of exceptional agility and interpretive talent.

Florescu will be directing the stage production. “My first exposure to musical theater was Gilbert and Sullivan,” he recalls, “and I look forward to bringing that same kind of looselimbed fun to highly energized works such as Barber of Seville.”

Heading the cast as Figaro is Mexican American baritone Luis Alejandro Orozco in his Florentine debut. He has performed throughout the United States in Marriage of Figaro, Carmen and Don Giovanni. Veteran conductor Joseph Rescigno marks his 35th year with the Florentines conducting Barber.

Florescu anticipates top-notch performances from his cast. “Almaviva will be performed by Taylor Stayton, one of the hottest upcoming Bel Canto tenors singing roles across the country and in Europe, and promises to be an exciting Count Almaviva.” In the critical role of Rosina, Spanish mezzosoprano Carol Garcia will appear in her American stage debut.

“She’s an upcoming international artist specializing in this repertoire, and has sung this role across Europe,” Florescu says.

The Florentine Opera’s ongoing policy of combining old and new remains evident in their programming for next season, which will include the new opera Prince of Players by Carlisle Floyd, the composer of Susannah, performed by the Florentines in 2010. Florescu hopes to draw new audiences to the venerable art form. “For those who have never heard an opera, every performance is a new experience whether it’s Madame Butterfly or Elmer Gantry. Our recent recording of Wuthering Heights won singular acclaim in Opera News, and we have high hopes for forthcoming seasons. Whatever the repertoire, old or new, those willing to experience an opera performance will experience a new source of pleasure, and hopefully one that will bring long-lasting satisfaction.”

Early Music Now concludes its season with something of a musical murder mystery. EMN welcomes Montreal, Canada-based Infusion Baroque, grand prizewinners of 2014’s Early Music America Baroque Performance Competition. This lively ensemble of Baroque flute, violin, cello and harpsichord players conducts an auditory investigation of the murder of Jean-Marie Leclair (1697-1764) with performances of his chamber music as well as works by his rival Jean-Pierre Guignon and fellow composers Jean-Joseph Cassanéa de Mondonville and Pietro Antonio Locatelli. As for murder—Leclair was found stabbed to death on a Paris street.

The Amish Project

Few actors are more selective about their projects than Chris Tucker. Before appearing on screen in 2012’s Oscar-winning Silver Linings Playbook, the comedian hadn’t appeared in a film outside of his lucrative Rush Hour franchise, and since then he’s done just one movie, the 2016 war drama Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.

Tucker is every bit as selective about his stand-up comedy as he is his acting roles.

He hadn’t done live shows for more than a decade before he returned to stand-up in 2011, and it was only in 2015 that he released his first-ever stand-up special, Chris Tucker Live, through Netflix. Now in his mid-40s, he’s a good deal more polished than the stick-thin, fast-talking comedian Friday introduced the world too, but he’s still as animated as ever, and he still delivers his wild punchlines in quick, speedy jabs.

Folky Canadian indie-rockers Great Lake Swimmers never had a big, blogbreakthrough moment the way that many of their peers did in ’00s, but they never burned out the way many of those same acts did, either. There are two kinds of two-piece rock bands: The ones that try to sound much bigger than two musicians, and the ones that don’t try to be anything other than what they are. The blistering Milwaukee rock duo Hi/Jack fall solidly into that later camp. With their stripped-down guitars/drums setup, the group conjures the raw spirit of ’70s rock ’n’ roll on their new album, Turn It To Ten, looking to acts like Aerosmith and Alice Cooper for inspiration. Every song makes good on the volume promised by the album title. They’ll share this release show for the record with openers Breaker and DATRF. 20 | A P R I L 2 0 , 2 0 1 7

What a run it’s been for Descendents singer Milo Aukerman. Since famously leaving his legendary punk band to go to college—a decision immortalized by on the group’s iconic 1982 debut Milo Goes to College—Aukerman has come and gone from the group numerous times, while juggling a career as a scientist (he conducted research at the University of Wisconsin before becoming an adjunct professor at the University of Delaware). These days he’s not as interested in biochemistry as he used to be. Last year he opted to leave science behind to commit full time to Descendents, and in the wake of last year’s Hypercaffium Spazzinate, their seventh album and their first in more than a decade, the group has lined up an aggressive tour schedule. Credit the band this: They’re acting their age. On the new album they write about the often ugly realities of life as a 50-something, with songs about gaining weight, raising kids and struggling to hold down healthy romantic relationships. The group once titled an album I Don’t Want to Grow Up, and now you can understand why.

Garry Tallent w/ Shun Ng @ Shank Hall, 8 p.m.

Garry Tallent’s career hasn’t slowed down any with age. For more than four decades, Tallent has been the bassist for Bruce Springsteen’s E-Street Band, a band that tours almost as much these days as they used to during the ’70s and ’80s peak. During his time away from the band he also handled production for artists like Sonny Burgess, Steve Earle, Steve Forbert and Robert Earl Keen Jr. It was only this year, though, that Tallent got around to recording an album of his own. His debut Break Time looks back to the sounds of his youth, drawing from early rock ’n’ roll, New Orleans R&B, rockabilly and pop—it’s hardly a major work, but it’s an entertaining glimpse at the music that inspired him. He’s currently on his first tour as a solo artist, playing club venues a good deal smaller than the sprawling arenas he’s used to playing with the EStreet Band.

Record Store Day @ Multiple Locations

Record Store Day began as an annual promotion designed to drive traffic back to brickand-mortar music stores with special releases, but over the years, cities have put their own local spin on the event. That’s especially true here in Milwaukee, where the April event has become something of a holiday for local music fans. Local shops are going all in this year. At Acme Records in Bay View, there will be eight hours of performances from artists including Milo, Black Lake Ensemble, Red Stuff, Fox Face and Slow Walker, while the East Side Exclusive Company will have WMSE DJs spinning throughout the day. Rush-Mor Records, Bullseye Records and Off The Beaten Path will all have sales of their own, while WMSE will celebrate the release of a live Direct Hit! 7-inch, Live From WMSE, Direct Hit!, recorded at the station that year (Direct Hit! will play a pair of shows, including an all ages one, at Cactus Club that night to celebrate that 7-inch and the re-release of their 2011 debut album Domesplitter).

While many listeners can’t help but associate Saddle Creek with the mid-’00s MySpace era, a time when indie rock and emo were at peak popularity and label founder Conor Oberst was being hailed as the voice of a generation, the label is still kicking, and it’s actually been on something of a hot streak lately. Newer acts like Big Thief, Hop Along and Icky Blossoms have all released fantastic records through the label, as has the Omaha quartet Twinsmith (albeit without attracting the same level of attention as some of their label peers). The group’s latest disc is 2015’s Alligator Years, a collection of bright, peppy rock with shades of The Clean, MGMT and Vampire Weekend. They’ll share this bill with a similarly poppy indie rock group from Milwaukee, Paper Holland.

Los Angeles’ Silversun Pickups wormed their way onto alternative radio with their slithery 2006 hit “Lazy Eye,” an A.D.D.-riddled update on the sounds of the Smashing Pumpkins and Modest Mouse that sounded absolutely fantastic over the airwaves. In the years since they’ve expanded their sound without losing the basic chemistry behind that hit. Caked in tension and paranoia, their sophomore album Swoon drew from the eerie spirit of horror movie scores (which they produced with Citizen King’s Dave Cooley). Some of that moodiness has carried through their subsequent releases, including 2012’s Neck of the Woods, and 2015’s Better Nature, which like so many recent rock albums downplays the guitars a little bit in favor of more prominent keyboards. If Smashing Pumpkins had been around in the ’80s instead of the ’90s, they might have made a record that sounded like this

Milwaukee Chamber Theatre Exceeds ‘Great Expectations’ ::BY JOHN JAHN

olly Rhode, director of the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre’s production of Gale Childs Daly’s adaptation of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, reflected on how much the word “great” is being bandied about these days.

The Victorian England-based story of a young man’s growing up to embody, certainly, a quite unexpected form of greatness is surely ripe for closer examination and reflection on what we all perceive as being great. What is “great,” anyway?

“Exploring Pip’s journey in Dickens’ story has been a welcome opportunity to reflect on [such] questions. I believe that compassion makes us great. Generosity makes us great. Empathy makes us great. And forgiveness makes us great.

These themes are ever-present in our play, and they are values to cherish, celebrate and protect,” Rhode explains. In fact, the MCT’s current production is likewise something to cherish and celebrate, for it is well acted, amusing, touching, sprightly paced and superbly staged.

Experimental Shakespeare with UWM’s Peck School of the Arts

At first glance, this cross section of Shakespeare’s body of work doesn’t have many similarities: One is a sweeping tragedy, the other ends in two weddings. UW-Milwaukee’s Peck School of the Arts places these two works in conversation with each other in a performance series titled “Faith and Jealousy: The Responsibilities of Love,” and draws out common themes that may spark new ways of thinking about these plays.

The interest factor lies primarily in the style: Five actors play all the parts in Othello, six do the job for Much Ado and each of these casts serves as the technical crew for the other’s show. A row of plain silver chairs sit in a row far upstage, surrounded by objects, a rack of hats and a drum that all hold enticing promise of waiting to be drawn in as tools of the story. Each play begins with a parade in which the actors introduce themselves as their multiple characters, snatching off one hat and donning another, or changing physicality to denote a switch.

The cast of Much Ado does a fair job of lifting the words and wit off the page to spar with each other; Samuel Robinson, Rachel Meldman and Austin Lepper as Don Pedro and the match-

makers, and Andrew Montano as Benedick, are in their element with the physical comedy of a fun-to-watch scene as Benedick falls into a trap to help him admit his love.

The Othello ensemble is gritty and sincere; the invisible ties between each character vibrate and hum with life through well-acted relationships and vigorous fights. Chris Westmoreland is captivating as Iago, navigating the role with humor and calm confidence. In a fascinating piece of direction from director Bill Watson, Iago and Emilia (Mary Jo Perez) busy themselves for several scenes with the act of physically creating Othello and Desdemona’s bed from materials previously used onstage.

The technical elements are few; there is little to focus on but the actors and the words. Both casts have undertaken an intriguing experiment in storytelling. At moments both struggle to keep the experiment from overwhelming the story itself; overall, the characters are clear, as is the draw to these students’ telling of Shakespeare’s beloved narratives.

ent locations and personas. The fine actors change characters with confident assiduity—throwing on a coat, dress or hat, altering their expressions and demeanor and even changing English accents from lower to higher classes and back again— never confounding us in the least in the offing.

Likewise, a stack of books is a stack of books at one moment; then, bedecked with a dingy veil, is transformed into the sad, petrified wedding cake of the tragic Miss Havisham (Deborah Staples). The aforementioned desk is just that, but in a moment becomes the carriage whereupon Pip (Josh Krause) travels to London, or the table at which he and Herbert (Zach Thomas Woods) later dine, or a slide enjoyed by a young imp (Jonathan Gillard Daly) until he scuffs his knee.

What remarkable effort and effectiveness!

Kudos to scenic designer Lisa Schlenker, stage manager Judy Martel, costume designer Jason Orlenko and lighting designer Jason Fassl for making this all come off so well. Their work— plus that of the amazing actors and the wonderful Childs Daly adaptation from which they all clearly drew inspiration—make for a truly enjoyable evening at the theater.

Latin-American Films Showcased in Series at UWM Cinema ::BY DAVID LUHRSSEN

M

ovies can be entertaining but they can also serve as windows onto worlds beyond our experience.

Throughout its 39-year history, UW-Milwaukee’s Latin American Film Series has opened a window to Mexico and points south. The issues raised by the annual film festival have often been pressing. After all, relations between the U.S. and Latin America have long been intimate but fraught with tension as well as friendship.

This year, however, the Film Series might assume a larger significance than usual. Antiimmigrant sentiment, directed in part toward Latinos, was prevalent during last year’s Republican primaries and the campaign rhetoric of GOP nominee Donald Trump. As president, Trump vows to make good on his promise to build a wall along the southern border of the U.S. “Our primary objective has always been to educate the Milwaukee community about Latin America and the Americas in general,” says E.J. Basa, co-curator and lead programmer of the Film Series as well as an instructor in UWM’s film studies program. “The political climate now might require a bit more education when it comes to differences—to give people

more access to information about boundaries and crossing boundaries, not simply political or legal boundaries but intellectual and cultural boundaries.”

As usual, the selections included in the Film Series, organized by UWM’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, was drawn from a vast array of choices. “I was almost overwhelmed after hours and hours and hours of watching films,” Basa says. “So many wonderful films are coming out of Latin America!”

The programming represents a rough crosssection of contemporary Latin-American cinema with films in Spanish, Portuguese and native languages; films directed by men and women; films about younger people and older people; films that won awards and drew audiences in Latin America and films that were obscure even in their home countries. “A lot of this year’s films have to do with families,” Basa says. “It was not a theme we decided in advance but an undercurrent that emerged.”

Movies ‘Like Crazy’ at Italian Film Festival ::BY JOHN JAHN

e are excited to show this film and are most grateful to the Italian Community Center for again sponsoring a film,” says Paul Salsini, chairman of the Italian Film Festival Committee about one of the eight films scheduled to be shown this year, La Pazza Gioia (Like Crazy).

Milwaukee is one of only 12 cities hosting such an annual festival, coordinated nationally by Italian Film Festivals USA. As with past such events, movies selected for this 11th festival encompass comedy, drama and documentary and are full, professional, feature-length films from Italy.

La Pazza Gioia, directed by Paolo Virzì and starring Valeria Bruni Tedeschi and Micaela Ramazzotti, is superbly acted and directed.

It’s a warm and human take on mental illness that doesn’t fall into maudlin pits of parody or cliché. Tedeschi and Ramazzotti expertly portray two quite different women with one thing in common: They’ve both escaped from a women’s mental institution. Together, they embark upon a road trip through the Tuscan landscape—kind of Thelma and Louise meets One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Such a story as this could have ended up in a disastrous movie; here, however, it makes for a bittersweet tale about two fully fleshed-out characters that we want to spend time with, perhaps occupying a vacant seat in their car, and get to know much better.

But the dealer brings AR70s instead of the agreed M16s, and since no one trusts anyone else anyway, tempers quickly escalate and guns are drawn. The intrigue of who’s doing what to whom, the ’70s retro flair and the tart and sometimes funny dialogue can’t entirely ameliorate the monotony of the endless gunfight that follows as wounded crooks duck, groan, lose blood, reload and shoot again. The highly stylized action picture is perhaps intended as a parody of ultra-violent flicks. Brie Larson and Armie Hammer star.

Set during and after World War I, Oscar Isaac and Christian Bale square off as romantic rivals in this depiction of an under-recognized passage of history. Isaac portrays Armenian medical student Mikael Boghosian. He meets and falls in love with Ana (Charlotte Le Bon), already romantically involved with American reporter Chris Myers (Bale). Ana is drawn to Mikael, however, she has bigger problems because nearly 2 million Armenians are being forced to leave their villages and sent on death marches by the Turkish government. Late Armenian investor-philanthropist Kirk Kerkorian hired screenwriters and established Survivor Pictures to finance this project. Casting Bale and Isaac may stir viewer interest and finally bring attention to these tragic events. (L.M.)

Still smarting over the breakup of her marriage to handsome David Connover (Geoff Stults), Tessa schemes to end his engagement to Julia (Rosario Dawson). In phase one, Tessa attempts to make Julia appear irresponsible with David and Tessa’s young daughter. Phase two finds Tessa setting up Julia to appear to be dating other men, and in phase three, things will become even uglier. Kate Hudson and Kerry Washington were originally cast in this flip-flop on the Fatal Attraction formula, but cat-fight-wise, the Heigl-Dawson matchup is significantly more promising. (L.M.)

[HOME MOVIES/OUT ON DIGITAL] The Wanderers

Nostalgia for pre-Beatles youth culture was a consistent theme through 1970s pop culture. In movie terms, what resulted was a batch of one-note forgettables and a pair of superb films that bookended the decade, George Lucas’ American Graffiti (1973) and Philip Kaufman’s The Wanderers (1979).

Based on Richard Price’s novel, The Wanderers begins as a romp across the Bronx, 1963, focused on the titular youth gang whose only business— unlike gangs of today—was mutual support in the face of an aggressive world. Male camaraderie and ethnic hostility in the blackboard jungle of high school are explored with great humor and memorable scenes. The soundtrack is a well-stocked jukebox from the era. While the POV is adolescent male, The Wanderers is aware of the larger changing world outside the white ethnic ghetto and ends on an elegiac note, represented by the specter of Bob Dylan singing in a Greenwich Village club.

“Veep: The Complete Fifth Season”

It was almost prophetic: As season five opens, Selina Meyer (Julia LouisDreyfus) wins the popular vote against her idiot opponent for the White House—but on television instead of in reality, the Electoral College is tied.

Meyer reads sterling lines from the teleprompter about “the majesty of our democratic system,” but when the mics are off, it’s a torrent of hilarious trash talk. Rushing along with screwball comedy speed, “Veep” remains a sharp political satire.

Microcosmos

An ant sucks water from a glistening droplet of morning dew—a gelatinous globe when seen close-up in Microcosmos (1996). Roger Ebert called it “an amazing film,” its striking imagery and production outshining most documentaries from a cinematic perspective. Microcosmos opens up a world below our usual field of vision, inhabited by insects almost extra-terrestrial in their weird beauty. The Blu-ray release includes a making-of documentary and interviews with directors Claude Nuridsany and Marie Pérennou.

I

’m standing on our backyard patio with my spouse. He’s grilling steaks on a Weber. If you turn and draw an imaginary line straight to the east, you will see grills galore. Turn west and its twilight time, the hour of Old Fashioneds and mosquitoes. My belly is large with child number three who will grow up on a street with no sidewalks. It’s a lily-white-John Updike kind of place where folks watch “Vietnam” on color televisions.

It’s 2017, and the Museum of Wisconsin Art is hosting a major exhibition, “Hyperphotographic,” (showing now through May 21) of often similarly themed photographs by Tom Bamberger. At age 68, he’s donated 400 of his prints to the museum. A UW-Milwaukee philosophy major, he can’t be deciphered; never mind that he taught the logic of mathematics. In the retrospective, Untitled (Grilling, 1986) describes the mind-numbing sameness of suburbia, but beyond that, the loss of hopeful horizons. I asked Bamberger to devise an equation about his accomplishments. He declined, so I devised this: 400-T=0. 400+T=68.

Clad in a white t-shirt, he’s Milwaukee’s Bad Boy. A fly clings to his shirt. Does it matter if he killed it and staged the photo? Don’t ask Bamberger. He’s tired of answering questions.

On Saturday, May 6, “Bamberger and Friends” will convene in the museum at 1 p.m. Among the topics will be the condition of our art community. Some artists have fled to Los Angeles or New York, but not Bamberger. He embraced the technology which keeps us hyper-connected, using it to expand his career. All those faces, fields, suburbs and techno machines could be anywhere. He also writes about urban architecture, decrying repetition that dilutes rather than enhances. As a result he is sometimes blasted for his opinions. It’s great to live long enough to be opinionated. Otherwise, we are lashed to the wheel of sameness.

Lots to See at Gallery Night and Day ::BY TYLER FRIEDMAN

ilwaukee’s favorite quarterly, two-day art event is upon us again. Stretched over April 21 and 22, Gallery Night and Day features 43 venues across the Downtown area. The event website features a comprehensive participant list and map, but allow me to whet your appetite with a few recommendations.

RedLine Milwaukee (1422 N. Fourth St.) will be hosting the opening of “Existence as Protest” on April 21 from 5-9 p.m. The solo show treats questions of indigeneity from the indigenous perspective, namely that of Gregg Deal, artist and member of the Paiute Tribe of Pyramid Lake. Much of Deal’s previous work has dealt with indigenous identity and pop culture, and “Existence as Protest” is no exception. Addressing timely issues such as mascots, Standing Rock-Dakota Access Pipeline and land rights, “Existence as Protest” is a primer on contemporary concerns of indigenous peoples.

“Face the War Paint” at the King Drive Commons Gallery and Studio (2775 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive) is similarly inspired by indigenous traditions. The exhibited works riff on the symbolic suggestiveness of traditional body art. “Ceremonial masks and body art feature distinct tribal identifying markers or social rank indicators. This ceremonial tradition can be found in indigenous arts, ancient carvings, fashion, hair styling, dancing and rituals,” says featured artist and guest curator Fidel Verdin. “Modern day war paint is worn everyday by people trying to fit into some externally created ‘box’ of what our work, school, family or any other aspect of ‘normal’ life is supposed to look like.”

“Thirty” celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Walker’s Point Center for the Arts (839 S. Fifth St.). With works by both established and emerging artists, “Thirty” honors its past and anticipates its future. Contributing artists include Dennis Nechvatal (the WPCA’s first exhibiting artist in Sept. and Oct.1987), Valerie Christell (the WPCA’s first administrator and current gallery director at Alfons Gallery) and Marcela Garcia (the WPCA’s new executive director). An opening reception for “Thirty” takes place April 21 from 5-9 p.m.

Ancient Rock Artists of the Midwest Left Messages in Stone ::BY JENNI HERRICK

A

ncient rock art was created by native people who carved, drew or painted onto natural rock surfaces, and the artistic images that remain today serve as powerful spiritual and cultural references from a bygone era. These symbolic markings, known as either petroglyphs (images carved or engraved into rocks) or pictographs (images made with paint or other pigment), are one of the oldest material forms of expression by our early human ancestors, and many of their ancient drawings remain on cliffs, rock shelters and cave walls across the Midwest.

A new book focused on Native American rock art pairs a watercolor artist and an archeologist to reveal the ancient stories behind some of the most iconic prehistoric paintings. In Hidden Thunder: Rock Art of the Upper Midwest, artist Geri Schrab and archeologist Robert “Ernie” Boszhardt collaborate to research and interpret the stories of Indian art located mostly in southwestern and west central Wisconsin. By combining Boszhardt’s 40-plus years of experience as an archeologist with Schrab’s ethereal renderings of the original images, Hidden Thunder lends new understanding to the cultural context of these fragile natural resources.

Boszhardt works for the Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center at UW-La Crosse and serves as an honorary fellow at UW-Madison.

Schrab has two decades of experience visiting and painting rock art with an emphasis on the Midwest and Lake Superior region.

The two co-authors will appear at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 20, at Books & Company, 1039 Summit Ave., Oconomowoc.

A Concentration Camp

By Any Other Name…

Cracking down on LGBT rights, here and abroad ::BY PAUL MASTERSON

C

hechnya, that charming republic of the Russian Federation, is back in the news. You may recall Chechnya’s recent brutal decade of civil wars with 350,000 casualties (Russia “won” and Vladimir Putin solidified his role as the guy who could fix things). Well, that restive home of Cossacks and khingalsh pumpkin bread now boasts a concentration camp for gays.

The news evoked the requisite appalled response. Lesbian talk show host Ellen DeGeneres decried it, of course, and former Vice President Joe Biden called on the White House to condemn it. Yes, I know…calling upon the morally bankrupt to exercise a compassionate, human reaction to inherent evil is a fool’s errand.

Anyway, the news reminded me of Sen. Tom Cotton’s (R-Ark.) insidious retort to those who protested Indiana’s Religious Freedom law that would have legalized discrimination against LGBTs. His infamous rationale went “it’s important we have a sense of perspective … In Iran they hang you for the crime of being gay.”

Aside from implying gays are criminals, Cotton’s dismissal of LGBT rights and his countyour-blessings attitude should make one thing clear: Before we address concentration camps in Chechnya, we need to finally close our own. And yes, we have them. Given our enlightened Western ways, our incarceration takes less odious forms. It’s all relative. Denying human dignity doesn’t require barbed wire and watch towers.

Overt or subliminal discrimination, creating obstacles for LGBT families to adopt, conversion therapy, driving children to suicide (or threatening to kill them if they’re gay), trauma induced by fear of physical or psychological terrorism

from trans- or gay-bashing whether in the streets or from a pulpit all have the same effect. Think of those, who, even today, stay in the closet out of fear; think of out but aging LGBTs who return to the closet when they find themselves in hostile senior living facilities.

Meanwhile, while the smoke-and-mirror manner of our current administration distracts us with $100 million dollar fireworks shows, Tennessee Sen. Mark Green, well known for his anti-LGBT agenda, has been nominated for U.S. Army Secretary. Ironically, but not surprisingly, he would replace a gay man. Members of North Carolina’s relentlessly homophobic legislature attempted to overturn marriage equality. A similar movement is underway in Texas. Laws eroding our rights can be stealthily enacted, ostensibly in the name of religious freedom. The revived conservative tilt of the Supreme Court will encourage antiLGBT legal challenges. And while immigration crackdowns are claimed to protect the rest of us, their rationale could easily be reformulated to crack down on LGBTs, in the name of some concocted threat to Christian values.

Locally, we have the machinations of Wisconsin Family Action to contend with. Sen. Tammy Baldwin is already under attack with her opposition playing the lesbian card to incite the Republican base. A local beer magnate has already promised millions to take her senate seat.

I know I’m repeating myself. But now with “immigration detention centers,” “deportation force” and “Muslim ban” part of our political vocabulary, it’s time to act. We can’t expect those who offered mock remorse over last year’s Orlando massacre and exploited our tragedy for their devices to stop at those others who are perceived as different.

THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS EMBRACE SYNTHESIZERS ON ‘WHITEOUT CONDITIONS’

t’s no secret that mainstream pop has shifted away from organic, guitar-oriented sounds to music that features synthesizers, electronic tones and programmed rhythms. With their newly released seventh album, Whiteout Conditions, The New Pornographers have fully embraced this sonic setting for their otherwise rather traditionally rooted style of pop music. But singer/guitarist A.C. Newman says the new sound of the new album isn’t an attempt to capitalize on a current sound.

“I’ve never thought it was a good idea to start chasing any style,” Newman explains. “I thought if we start chasing what’s popular, we’re never going to catch up. Like, by the time we get there, something else will be popular, and we’ll be chasing that.”

Instead, Newman says the more synthetic character of Whiteout Conditions is simply the product of his affection for sounds he’s been hearing that can be created on computers and keyboards.

“A lot of music that I think is incredibly cool, like Animal Collective or Tame Impala or MGMT, a lot of it is moving toward electronics,” Newman said. “It’s arguably psychedelic pop, but it’s also very electronic. So when I hear these bands that I love, some part of me just thinks let’s do something like that, not that we’re actively trying to chase them.”

In fact, Newman said he’s always liked “cool keyboard” and other unique synthetic sounds. But for most of the New Pornographers’ history, these leanings haven’t been obvious in the music. Instead, this Canadian-bred group—which has often been touted as a pop super group, thanks to the notoriety several of the band members have gotten through solo projects or other bands (Newman, singer Neko Case and keyboardist/ singer Kathryn Calder are established solo artists, while guitarist/singer Dan Bejar leads the group Destroyer)— emerged sounding like a fairly straight-forward, albeit uncommonly talented, pop band.

The 2000 debut album, Mass Romantic, immediately established the New Pornographers as a force on the

indie music scene. A power pop gem, Mass Romantic received rave reviews and in 2007 was ranked at No. 24 on Blender magazine’s list of the best indie albums of all time.

Six more well-received albums have followed, but their latest is the first where keyboard/electronic instrumentation has taken center stage over guitars. Songs like “Second Sleep,”“Avalanche Alley” and “Play Money” especially take on an electronica feel, as their hooky pop melodies come wrapped within keyboard/computergenerated instrumentation and programmed beats.

In addition to using more of an electronica/keyboardcentric sound, Newman went into Whiteout Conditions with some other objectives.

“I wanted it to be up tempo, but also wanted it to be sort of laid back in its way. I wanted it to be driving, but not really aggressive,” he said. “I wanted to use a lot of drones as textures and just keep the song structures fairly simple and keep the songs to maybe three or four chords.”

Newman and his bandmates achieved those goals, and also overcame the absence of Bejar. An idiosyncratic songwriter who has generally contributed a few tunes to each of the previous six albums, Bejar added a quirky dimension to the albums of The New Pornographers.

Newman said Bejar’s absence from Whiteout Conditions doesn’t mean he won’t be part of The New Pornog-

rapher in the future, but a couple of issues prompted Newman to complete Whiteout Conditions without his songwriting co-hort.

“He was right in the middle of a Destroyer album, which I think he’s just finishing. It’s probably getting mastered as we speak,” Newman said. “And another part of it was I told him the kind of record I wanted to make, which was the record that we made. And then he said he was writing weird, quiet songs. He didn’t think he had anything that fit into the vibe.”

“Now that we’re on album seven, I realize there’s just not enough room in the set for all of the songs,” Newman said. “There are always songs we want to play, but there isn’t the room for them. There are always like couples of songs that we’ll trade out. Like one show we’ll play ‘Use It’ from Twin Cinema and the next show we’ll think why don’t we do [the song] ‘Twin Cinema’ instead of ‘Use It.’ Or why don’t we do ‘Sing Me Spanish Techno’ instead of ‘Use It?’… I feel like we have a lot of songs that feel like very competent live songs to interchange.”

The New Pornographers headline the Pabst Theater on Thursday, April 20 at 8 p.m. with openers Waxahatchee.

R

ob Mack’s first Milwaukee band was a big band, the Brew City Big Band. But while swinging was fun, the Detroit native rushed at the opportunity to reconnect with his roots. “It was a chance to relive those punk days when I was a kid,” he says of his new group, Bad Bread. On their just-released album, The Other Side of the Knife, Bad Bread could easily be mistaken for a London punk band circa 1978 with its heaving riffs, one-two-three tempos and soccer chant cadences. Mack is upfront, singing with hoarse power and fierce determination on a set of spittle-sprayed originals.

Mack debuted with Bad Bread live on Riverwest Radio in 2015 with guitarist Patrick King, drummer Gabe Hammer and bassist Marc Ferch. “We ramped up real quick,” he says. “When we get together to practice, it flows. One guy will do something and the other three flow into it and after 30 minutes, we have a song.”

Ferch, who long ago played in one of Milwaukee’s first punk rock bands, Buck Byron and The Little Seizures, is happy that the Sex Pistols’ “Bodies” is the lone cover that repeatedly finds its way into shows. “We could throw more covers in but it’s just so easy for us to come up with original stuff,” he says.

One track from The Other Side of the Knife received airplay on WMSE in advance of the album’s release. “The Shakes,” a grab-by-the-throat plea by an alcoholic staring into the abyss, is four minutes of unhindered fear disguised as rage. It launches for a few moments into some tricky chording echoing the jazz side interests of Bad Bread members.

“We had a good punk scene in Detroit. I was surprised there’s still a good scene going in Milwaukee,” Mack says. “Between the new book on the history of punk in Milwaukee and a bunch of new bands, the scene here is gaining traction and getting bigger. The advantage Bad Bread has is that we are all friends and we’re a little bit older. Our expectations are realistic.

Our egos aren’t that big!”

Bad Bread has ventured to Kenosha and Chicago and north to Green Bay. They have also been heard on Chaos Radio, an internet station dedicated to punk rock. “We’re not metal but we get along well when we play with metal bands,” Mack remarks of a recent gig in West Allis.

“Some say people have no use for CDs anymore,” Mack says. “I don’t April 22, think it’s true. A physical copy is a great way to distribute your music, to 9 p.m. get it played, to hook up with other bands and to submit to festivals.”

ast time I saw Gucci Mane play a concert in Milwaukee, he was fat.

It was the summer of 2013, just a few months before a total meltdown that culminated in felony firearm charges that sent him to federal prison for more than two years (he’d been facing 20), and the Atlanta rapper was towing a massive, seam-busting gut he made no effort to suck in. He seemed so proud of that belly that I’d assumed it was deliberate—a sign, like the bulky diamond chains around his neck, of a man well-fed and a life well-lived.

That may be how he saw it at the time, too, but that’s not how he sees it anymore. The gut, he’s since explained, was a side effect of drug addiction since calories from the gallons of syrup he downed each week had to go somewhere. “I wanted to lose weight,” he told the New York Times shortly after his prison release, “but if it took for me to stop drinking lean to lose weight, it wasn’t even a choice.”

With sobriety came fitness: Over his stay in the Terre Haute, Ind., penitentiary, Gucci’s magnificent gut gave way to the improbable abs of an action movie star in one of the most drastic physical transformations in rap history. Comb the internet and you’ll find plenty of fans joking that this Gucci Mane is an imposter replacement for the last one. You’ll also find some who truly believe it.

sound bites of a motivational speaker. “Anybody can do the stuff Gucci used to do,” he said of his newly disciplined lifestyle to the Times. “Can y’all copy living how I’m living?

Can y’all copy getting y’all life together?”

And this new Gucci Mane is enjoying a moment. The internet greeted him with a hero’s welcome, and rap stars young and old lined up to work with him. Just months after his release, he had a number one single thanks to his cameo on Rae Sremmurd’s giddy smash “Black Beatles.” His stature hasn’t been this high since his heyday mixtape run in the late ’00s.

It’s no wonder his show at the Eagles Ballroom on Thursday felt like such an event.

Some 3,000 fans filled the venue, an unexpectedly massive turnout for a cult artist who in the past has played the city for just a couple hundred people. And although his concert was no more or less ceremonious than his past appearances—he’s not much of a performer; he mostly ambles around the stage, rapping over his own vocal tracks with little in the way of crowd work—it was more satisfying for the simple reason that, for the moment at least, Gucci Mane is a star again.

He did the hits—“Wasted,” “Lemonade,” “Making Love to the Money”—but the crowd seemed just as juiced to hear random mixtape tracks, including new material like his comeback track “First Day Out Tha Feds.” This was one of those shows where the audience did most of the work. The average attendee was considerably more amped up than the guy on stage, and many rapped along just as hard.

Late in the show, Gucci briefly handed the stage to a special guest: Rico Love, the hitmaking Milwaukee producer-singer, who performed his big hit from a few years back, “They Don’t Know.” The crowd should have gone wild: Here was one of the city’s few true hometown heroes, one of the only Milwaukeeans of the last decade with any kind of presence on national radio, doing his biggest hit.

Yet they couldn’t have been more indifferent.

Greeting him with all the excitement of a commercial break, they stood silent, pulling their cell phones from the air for one of the only times during the hour-long set and impatiently waited for the headliner to return. The crowd didn’t want Rico Love. They wanted Gucci Mane. Smart money says they’ll grow tired of him again in time—they’ll begin to take him for granted, as they did in those years before his incarceration—but on this night, at least, their love for him was unconditional.

MUSIC::ALBUMS Curtis Knight featuring Jimi Hendrix Live at George’s Club 20

(DAGGER RECORDS) This music has been heard before—but not like this. The tracks on Live at George’s Club 20, recorded at a Hackensack bar in the winter of 1965-1966, were released years ago in seriously compromised versions by low-budget labels cashing in on the success of the guitarist heard on the recordings. Jimi Hendrix played guitar in the mid-’60s for R&B singer Curtis Knight before finding fame in the London psychedelic scene.

The tapes were raw, as were the performances from a set list that was comprised of recent R&B and blues hits. Hendrix occasionally fired off searing licks at the gigs heard here, but for the most part was content to be a member of the band. For fans and historians, Live at George’s opens a window onto the formative years of one of the signal rock stars of the ’60s.

Uzelli Psychedelic Anadolu

(UZELLI) A parallel music universe flourished in Germany during the ’70s and early ’80s among the large communities of Turkish “guest workers.” Uzelli Psychedelic Anadolu is a collection culled from the vast catalogue of a label that released Turkish language recordings sold largely in ethnic grocery stores. As for the psychedelic connection, all tracks were psychedelic in the way of all Near Eastern music with its oriental modes and exotic strings. Some selections are rhythmically rock, employ distorted electric guitars and hug their groove like a San Francisco jam band from the ’60s.

Blowing in from the middle of Illinois, this energetic male-female duo immediately demands your attention with the first notes of “Lights Out,” the leadoff track on Wildfire. By mixing pop arrangements with rock sensibilities and evergreen melodies, musician Aaron Wood and vocalist Asia Woodward have made an album perfect for playing during a long windows-down drive through mid-America. The fact that Ashland has opened for everyone from We the Kings to Switchfoot and Firehouse speaks to the band’s diversity and broad appeal. From heavy rockers (“Turn It Up,” “Closer”) to a surprising number of power ballads (“No Trouble,” “No Good,” “Why”), the only thing missing from Wildfire is Ashland’s better-than-the-original version of Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood.”

The tour is kind of focused around your experience of the East Side in the ’90s?

It was a time when we had the Oriental Drugstore, the Globe [rock club], Sweet Doomed Angel [hip vintage clothing shop] and Earwaves [hip record store]. Many things are not there anymore.

Visualizing memories is similar to having faith—having vision beyond what is visible.

Some of the facades that have gone up on East North Avenue and Farwell since then will look horrible in a few years. Some of the neighborhood’s architectural integrity has been lost.

Has everything gone downhill?

I’m not against Whole Foods and I’m happy for the artists who were commissioned to paint Black Cat Alley—but that alley once had a genuinely seedy element.

Graffiti artists were doing their work in the alley back then.

There was something organic about that part of the East Side that’s missing now. Will it return?

Most likely it won’t happen again in that neighborhood but it will happen somewhere else.

eff Winkowski is one of those faces that pops up across Milwaukee’s East Side and any other part of town where something grassroots and bohemian is happening. First surfacing in the ’90s punk scene, Winkowski brought the positive aspects of that movement into all facets of his life as a musician, writer, restaurant cook and, now, organizer of a guided walking tour of the East North Avenue neighborhood he calls “History, Hooligans and Hardcore.” Off the Cuff spoke with Winkowski in his kitchen, where he was cooking up a wonderful batch of vegetarian poutine.

Walk me through the “History, Hooligans and Hardcore” tour.

It begins at the Water Tower [the eastern terminus of North Avenue]—I’ll go over the history of the riots that happened there in the ’70s. We’ll walk past Villa Terrace and tour inside the historic and often overlooked Seventh-day Adventist Church, which used to give out free vegetarian meals. Next, a mansion nearby that has become a living and display space for artists. We’ll walk down Kenilworth to Black Cat Alley and through there to Ivanhoe. I’ll be telling stories all along and showing photographs—I’ll have a photo album with me, old school. We’ll pass the Oriental Theatre, pass the site of Sweet Doomed Angel and pilgrimage south on Farwell to the old Earwaves turned Bullseye Records. Last stop will be Blooming Lotus Bakery, where we’ll have coffee and hang out.

Blooming Lotus is an example of a place that can still happen when someone has a dream.

So what’s the take-away from this tour?

I don’t just want to look at what we’ve lost but I want to help people think about how to make what we have sustainable. Do we want to have a culture that stands up for itself and what’s right? Do we want to be literate, in conversation in real time with each other?

Looking back at the punk rock East Side of the ’90s, do you see a model for dealing with the situation we’re in today?

Looking back reminds me that we need an alternative left where music, architecture and art are crucial parts of a movement for social change. You remember those great shows where kids from different races and creeds filled the floor, shaking their asses together? We can change the world through kids dancing together as much as through any protest march.

I expect experiences like these to be extra available in the coming weeks. But they won’t necessarily come to you freely and easily. You will have to expend effort to ensure they actually occur. So be alert for them. Seek them out. Track them down.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Contagion may work in your favor, but it could also undermine you. On the one hand, your enthusiasm is likely to ripple out and inspire people whose help you could use. But maybe it’s an apt metaphor or poetic prod for your use right now. What could you do to stimulate your own creative production?

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Now would be an excellent time to add deft new nuances to the ways you kiss, lick, hug, snuggle, caress and fondle. Is there a worthy adventurer who will help you experiment with these activities?

June 2016 police raid on David Jessen’s Fresno County (California) farmhouse caused a $150,000 mess when sheriff’s deputies and Clovis Police Department officers “rescued” it from a trespassing homeless man—with the massive destruction leading to Jessen’s lawsuit announced in March. The misdemeanant helped himself to an ice cream bar, some milk and half a tomato, but was otherwise “unarmed”; however, by the time the police standoff ended, the “crime scene” included more than 50 cop cars, a SWAT team (and backups), two helicopters, standby ambulances, a police robot, and a crisis negotiation team. Windows, walls and wrought-iron doors were destroyed; teargas and a “flash bomb” were employed. (Jessen suspects that the farmhouse’s isolation enticed police to decide that it presented an excellent training opportunity.)

Crime Report Paul Perry Jr., 39, sound asleep behind the wheel of his car, with motor running, at 6 a.m. on April 2, was in no position to talk his way out of a DUI ticket, but did offer a gentle challenge to the Youngstown, Ohio, police officer. Several times, according to the police report, Perry offered to “thumb wrestle” the officer to get out of the ticket. From the report: “Perry was advised officers would not thumb-wrestle him.”

Wait, What? A father, 43, and his son, 22, argued on April 9 about who would walk the dog at their home on Chicago’s South Side. They apparently thought to settle the issue with a gunfight, and police, who recovered the two weapons, said both men received multiple wounds. I didn’t say she was ‘crazy’—I said she was focking Goofy.
