“What the hell” as my foot tramples on some squishy creature below the water level and I yelp like a scolded kid, my sister-in-law laughs out loud! What on earth has happened, well in true “Steve Irwin” fashion I have stepped on a stingray below the waves on a popular beach in Sydney and I hurriedly remove myself from the waves. I do not think I will be going back in anytime soon. As you may have gathered, I am down-under visiting my family and friends and as Kylie once crooned “I should be so lucky” swimming outdoors anywhere in March! One advantage of being on the other side of the world is that I can keep up with everything happening at home because we are 11 hours ahead of the UK.

CHAIR OF THE TRUST –

I am so happy at the news that Chris Passfield and his team have been able to open the Sports Hall again after 15 months of closure due to the dreaded RAAC situation. I am also heartened to hear from Chris that bookings for the Sports Hall are very encouraging and spaces are filling up fast. As you may know I run the Shenley Boasters squash club on a Thursday evening which fortunately was not affected by the “dodgy” roof, so I do understand that not having access to your favourite sports can be very frustrating. Therefore, I would like to say a big thank you to all our loyal customers and club organizers for their patience during this extended closure.

The Shenley Leisure Centre final phase of the roof repairs to the gymnasium continues and the hall will also have a completely new sprung floor and should be completed by May 2024. Another important project is ready to start immediately after the completion of works but for now please allow me to “keep my powder dry” and not divulge anything just yet. At the time of writing the budgets needs still to be discussed and ratified by the board at the March budget 2024-25 meeting, so keep watching this space for good news about the new facility. Finally, I would like to pay tribute to a man I did not have the good fortune to meet but understand he was the founding Father of both the Shenley and Woughton Leisure Centres. Mr Fernley Rose who sadly passed away at the beginning of 2024 was a fervent Northampton Saints and England rugby fan and loved all forms of sport and was involved in so many sporting initiatives in Milton Keynes. His funeral was attended by many people and our own Dave Hall read a tribute to his life. Our condolences go out to his family at this very sad time.

New Smith Machine

A great addition to the fitness room

A versatile piece of equipment designed for weight training. Its hallmark feature is the fixed barbell, allowing vertical movement solely along a guided track. This apparatus offers a controlled environment for various exercises, particularly beneficial for beginners or those recovering from injuries.

The Smith machine's versatility is evident in its application across multiple muscle groups. It accommodates a spectrum of exercises, such as squats, bench presses, lunges, and shoulder presses. Its fixed path aids in stabilizing movements, supporting proper form and reducing the risk of injury while lifting heavier weights.

Its inclusion in a fitness routine depends on individual preferences, fitness levels, and specific training objectives.
