“Here are the awards from earlier today for short films” announced Romesh Ranganathan! The BAFTA’s were on and I was sort of watching them when my wife Caroline entered the room. “And the Award goes to Mobility” and another small group “suited and booted” make their way up on to the stage to collect their gong! Only this time Caroline shouts out I do not believe it, that’s Akaash, that’s Akaash! Caroline taught Media and English at Denbigh school and one of her star pupils was a young man who she knew was destined for bigger things in the field of TV production as he was a talented young man and now there on the tele-box he is standing on stage taking the award for best short film as Director.
It is so gratifying to walk into the Shenley Leisure Centre (SLC) and hear the “buzz” of a busy place, badminton players back and energetically bashing a shuttlecock from side to side of the court. A new area marked out in the sports hall for our latest introduction of Pickleball which is proving to be very popular. It’s also heartening to see the trampoline club back with its enthusiastic members and organiser Jim who has been affiliated with the SLC for over 30 years. I pass my old squash mate Roy who is now playing badminton every Thursday and he tells me that he is so glad to be back at Shenley. In fact, I have never seen the bar so packed as it was on a Monday evening in May when our guardian angels Dave and Sid hosted yet another quiz night this time in aid of “Support Ukraine.” A record £500.00 was raised along with many donated bags of useful items and clothes given by the generous residents of our parish. Do you know Dave Hall has raised over £300,000.00 for good causes over the last 30 years through quiz nights, hats off to the man, he needs a big medal! I have also explored a new part of the building as I have pulled a fetlock and needed treatment so Paul and his team were there to assist. There is a knack to chatting calmly about subjects such as our favourite football team QPR whilst he squeezes and manipulates the living daylights out of my damaged tendon and Paul is an expert. My injured knee had been repaired within a month which is brilliant, not so brilliant is seeing a grown man cry! Hopefully, it now seems that the challenging times are past us and whilst not wanting to sound complacent our first month of the financial year turned a profit which is a promising start and long may it continue. Once more I would like to say a very big thank you to you our valued customers and I hope to see you around the centre sometime soon possibly in the bar watching the Euros! By the way we are always looking for new trustees so if you are an active member of the SLC and can donate your time freely and want to make a difference, please leave your CV at reception.
