Thank you for the wonderful “send-off” and generous “treasure chest” you blessed me with on August 18th, but most of all, thank you for the gift of this sabbatical! One of the books I read in preparation for this time of rest and renewal said “No matter what the plans are, both pastor and congregation will change during a sabbatical... Be ready for change, look expectantly for it, don’t hide it. Let it come. Embrace it, learn from it, celebrate the surprises, and let it nourish your spiritual relationship as people and pastor. There will be results that neither pastor nor people dream of.”1 I am excited (and yes, a little nervous) about discovering what God has in mind for me during the next three months. And, I am looking forward to hearing how God has been at work among you all during my sabbatical as well – I don’t imagine that either of us will be exactly the same when I return in November! By the time you are reading this, I will be somewhere in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Minnesota, where I am kicking off my sabbatical by participating in a “Renewal in the Wilderness” canoe trip designed for clergy. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts and prayers, and even though you will not be hearing from me again until November 24th, please know that like the apostle Paul, I will not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers!

Shenkel UCC celebrates the sacrament of Holy Communion at both services on the first Sunday of each month. Each time communion is served, some of the bread and nonalcoholic wine that has been consecrated at the altar will be saved in a traveling communion kit, ready to go to the homes or hospital rooms of members who were unable to be present, and would like to receive the sacrament. Please let Pastor Bonnie know if you, or someone you know, would appreciate “distance-communing” with their Shenkel Church family!

The Cluster welcomes all cash, food and clothing donations between the hours of 8:30 am to 12:00 pm on Monday through Friday. Please come to the back door off the alley. Parking spaces at the rear of the building are reserved for people dropping off donations. REMEMBER TOO, The Pottstown Cluster Food Bank collection at Shenkel is the 1st Sunday of each month. Please place your items in the large plastic bins in the narthex. AND...Please bring in your used cell phones and empty ink cartridges and place them in the box across from the nursery, or in the box located on the coat rack shelf across from the office. The cartridges are recycled to Staples, and the church receives credits toward the purchase of office supplies. The used cell phones are given to the police department to be distributed to abused women.

The Second annual Fundraising Dinner to benefit the Pottstown Cluster will be held on October 4, 2013 at the Berean Bible Church on High Street in Sanatoga. Tickets for the event are $40 each for an evening that includes a delicious dinner plus an entire evening of entertainment. Tickets will be available in September.

Please Consider Leaving Your Footprint Last month we rolled out a beautiful new brochure prepared by the Stewardship Committee inviting members to consider including a bequest to Shenkel UCC in their wills. What is a bequest? Why should you consider doing that? How will Shenkel benefit? These and other questions are answered by the ―Leaving Your Footprint‖ brochure! If you weren’t here to receive one, they will be available in the narthex as well as from the church office. We hope you will consider this way of making a statement that you believe in and care about the mission of Shenkel UCC! Note: If you’re comfortable sharing that you have chosen to include Shenkel in your will, please let the church office know. You do not need to share the amount or percentage you have included, and your names will not be shared with anyone except Pastor Bonnie.
SAVE-A-TAPE PROGRAM This is the easiest way to help our church financially. Just ask for a Save-A-Tape card at the customer service spot at your local Redner’s store. Show your card at the register when you check out, then bring your register tapes to church and deposit them in the box in the Narthex. These tapes are collected routinely, presented to the store, and Redner’s donates a percentage of your total purchase to the church. Be careful to bring your tapes in regularly instead of saving them at home, as they do expire if not redeemed within a certain time period. Also, please return the entire register tape. Redner’s will not accept any register receipt that has any part of it removed. Thank You, Redner’s!
BULLETIN BOARD…. CARD MAKING CLASS The card making class continues to meet on the third Thursday of each month at 10 AM. The cost of the class is $8.00 which will provide each of us with three beautiful cards. The next class will be on Thursday, September 19th. SHENKEL QUILTERS The Shenkel Quilters will meet on Tuesday(s) September 10th and the 24th at 9:30 AM in the Church Social Hall. It seems like ages since we last met. Let's engage our quilting skills and get this lovely quilt done! I'm anxious to catch-up on everybody's summer news. If you were like me...it was a hot, humid and lazy summer. Mid-Day Dinner Club Shenkel's Mid-day Dinner Club meets at 12 noon on the third Tuesday of each month – and you’re invited to join us! The next meeting date is Tuesday, September 17th and we’ll be eating at the Americana Diner in Boyertown. The Mid-day Dinner Club is open to young-at-heart adults of any age who enjoy eating out and would like to get to know other Shenkel members a little better. Call the church office if you’re able to join us!
Prayer Shawl Ministry Shenkel UCC’s Prayer Shawl Ministry is happy to provide anyone in need of comfort with a beautiful prayer shawl. If you know of someone who would benefit from one, please call the church office. They also make baptismal blankets. More info will be available when Pastor Bonnie returns from her sabbatical! We hope to have a full group to “share the love” at Old First!

To open our new season, we will be entertained by William Collins who is described by the entertainment company, Philstar, as the ―voice extraordinaire.‖ William will accompany himself on the keyboard and with back up music. It should be a fun time for all. *All participants are asked to contribute $6.50 to cover the cost of the lunch. STEWARD’S CORNER Hello, everyone! Welcome back from ―summer-time, when the liven' was busy!‖ What fun, full of travel, visiting with family and friends, and relaxing, and coming to Shenkel church when we could worship outside or in the social room on rainy Sunday mornings. We often had visitors joining us, especially the day that we had an ―ice-cream social‖ after the worship service – all the ice cream you could eat and loads of different kinds of toppings...all that for just $5.00, which went to a good cause. I was just standing in a corner, waiting until clean up time, when Pastor Bonnie came over to me and said: ―My father, Henry, is here and he wants to meet Steward!‖ I remember that he's the guy who suggested a fundraiser last spring to help the church budget. You remember it...Bob and Barbara Brown made nice big buttons with the church picture and the number ―175,‖ that you could get when you gave a donation of 175 pennies, or nickels, dimes, quarters or dollars to the church. That project was a huge success and helped the church financially. So, I was happy to meet with Henry, he's a wise man! He also has good taste and lots of good ideas. He told Pastor Bonnie that his favorite article in our monthly newsletter is ―STEWARD'S CORNER !‖ Then he scolded me for writing short articles recently. Okay, so here it is, Henry. I was told you have another good idea. In that morning's worship service, a nice lady named Faye told a story as ―A Shenkel Moment.‖ It had lots of interesting comments in it, and our astute visitor (Henry) picked up on them and later told Pastor Bonnie that Faye's comments may help other people in their faith journey, and Faye's story should be shared with many others. Now, I ask you...is he not a Wise Guy of the best kind? Thank you, Henry. (I hope this article is long enough for you.) Glad to Meet Ya, Steward
HEALING PRAYERS The third Sunday of each month is a time for prayer and anointing. Healing Prayers are offered during all services on that day for anyone who desires individual prayers or prayers on behalf of another in need. The Prayer Chain list is continually being updated. Request for prayers should be placed in the prayer box in the Narthex, or get in touch with any member of the Wholeness Committee. Prayer requests will be carried for one month. If anyone is interested in ministering on the Prayer Chain, please contact Ann Baccari or Freda Wanner. COMMUNITY SERVICE Shenkel is again hosting a community Labor Day Weekend service on Sunday, September 1st, at 10 am, in our Grove. Invite your friends and neighbors to this very special occasion for worship which will include participation by at least six Pottstown area congregations, including our neighbors Temple UMC. and Cedarville UMC. You won’t want to miss this special service!

Please join us for "Raise the Roof” an exciting fundraiser on Saturday, September 28. A number of local praise bands will be playing for the title of "Best of the Best" in our very own Shenkel Grove! You won't want to miss it! Proceeds from the event will benefit the Free Love Missions League and its efforts to restore Camp Fernbrook. Doors will open at 3:30 p.m. Please bring blankets and chairs for seating on the lawn. Tickets will be sold at the event for $5/ person (children 4 and under are free). The evening will include food for sale and fun drawings. No alcohol is permitted. We hope you will join us for this unique evening of wonderful music in support of a great cause! And please help spread the word to family and friends!

Ten Reasons Why You Should Be Going to Church from the Rev. Anne Russ of Argenta Presbyterian Church, (http://argentapres.org/2012/05/18/ten-reasons-why-you-should-be-going-to-church-2/) I've just seen one too many articles on why people aren't coming to church. Admittedly, there are some good reasons. But I'd like to share my top 10 reasons why you should be coming to church. Others will have different reasons and some may disagree with the ones I have listed, but here they are. 10. Coming to church doesn't mean you have no doubts about God or faith or religion. It means you have a place you can share with people who have their own doubts. 9. Bad stuff is going to happen in your life. It just is. A church community cannot be everything to everyone in times of crisis, but when the bottom falls out of your world, it's great to have a community to lift you back up. 8. Bad stuff is going to happen in your life, part two. The time to build a relationship with God is not when life turns ugly, and you've run out of all other options. Attending worship regularly helps build a relationship with God and others that will give you a solid foundation when the winds blow and the storms come. 7. Not all churches are anti-something. Most of us are for people, for acceptance, for hospitality. Really, we're out there. We just don't get the good press. 6. Any church worth its salt has really good food on a regular basis. 5. Churches offer paint-by-number opportunities to serve. Many people would like to help the poor, the hungry and the homeless, but they don't know how to get involved, how to make the time to be involved, or what they can do to really make a difference. Churches offer you ways to plug in to help those who need it most. 4. You've got a gift. Probably two or 10 of them. Becoming involved in the ministry of a church will help you discover and use gifts you never even knew you had. 3. Not all churches are after your money. Good churches want you to have a healthy relationship with money. Sure, churches need to pay the electric bill and the pastor and the youth director, but money and the church is more about you than it is about the church. It's about your own relationship with money. World events have proven that it's much better to put faith in God than in a bank account. Church can help you with that. 2. Taking a break from our hectic lives to come to church is accepting the gift of Sabbath. Wayne Mueller says “(Sabbath) dissolves the artificial urgency of our days, because it liberates us from the need to be finished.” We don't take Sabbath and come to worship because we have time and have finished up everything that needs to be done. We take Sabbath because it is time to stop, and we are designed to stop, rest and reflect. Those who don't are destined to crash and burn. 1. Jesus is really cool. Even if you don't know if you can believe in the whole Son-of-God thing, even if you refer to the resurrection as the Zombie Jesus event and even though those of us already in church often do a lousy job of following him, come to church to get to know Jesus. Shenkel United Church of Christ Submissions for 2014 Elected Offices In the United Church of Christ, we value the concept of “the call” of persons into various ministries in the life of the church. A call is affirmed by the church through acknowledgement of gifts for particular ministries, and the acceptance of the call as having come from God, guided by the Holy Spirit. After reviewing the qualifications and responsibilities of elected officials below, you are invited to submit names for consideration for the various elected offices. You may also submit your own name if you feel called to a particular position. All submissions must be received by the church office by September 30, 2013 Shenkel’s Nominating Committee will review all names submitted as potential candidates for the positions that need to be filled. Seeking to recruit a balanced slate of candidates, they will select persons for nomination to the various positions and invite those candidates to stand for election at the December Congregational Meeting. You do not need to ask people whose names you submit if they are willing to serve; the Nominating Committee will do that as they finalize the slate of candidates. A Summary of the Qualifications and Responsibilities of Elected Officials In accordance with the Constitution and By-laws of Shenkel UCC, the Consistory is composed of five Deacons, five Elders, and the Pastor. These members have agreed to maintain the care and control of Shenkel Church and Cemetery as a sacred trust for the congregation. The By-laws also provide guidelines for the six members of the Board of Christian Education. Deacons and Elders – are active members of Shenkel UCC may serve up to two consecutive two year terms; to be eligible for the office of Elder, it is recommended but not required that a person have been a Deacon for at least one term attend monthly Consistory meetings and work with other committees when needed transact the business of the church on financial as well as spiritual levels Elders – assist the Pastor in the distribution of Communion are responsible for maintaining accurate membership records Board of Christian Education Members – are active members of Shenkel UCC may serve up to two consecutive two year terms attend monthly meetings and work with other committees provide for the educational ministry of the church help in the recruitment of teachers and staff for Sunday School provide leadership when choosing curriculum and activities for Sunday School and other educational ministries of the church __________________________________________________________________________________
