“Worship the LORD with gladness; come into his presence with singing.” President

- Psalm 100:2

Jeff Graef Vice President James White Secretary Lynne Moyer

As Beth Luckenbach was going through some of her mom’s papers, she found a list that someone had thoughtfully prepared for Barbara so she wouldn’t forget anything when she headed off for church every Sunday morning. The list included items like her purse, her hearing aid, and her offering envelope, but the last item on the list had been added in Barbara’s own handwriting. Barbara wanted to be sure to remember to bring “a good attitude.”

Treasurer Ken Bevan Financial Secretary Chris Gray Assistant Financial Secretaries Lori Scharneck Doug Allen Director of Music Ministry Rev. Douglas R. Holder Elders Sherri Mocarski Lynne Moyer

Those of you who knew Barbara might be surprised that she would have felt a need to remind herself to bring a good attitude to worship – I don’t know that I ever saw her at church with anything other than a big smile, a heart full of love, and a sincere interest in everyone who was present. Barbara was always prepared to worship with all her heart, soul and mind, and sometimes even with a little dance in her step! Clearly, Barbara took her responsibility to be an active and joyful respondent to the Good News of the Gospel seriously. She knew that worship was important – not only as a celebration of God’s love, a time to hear stories of God’s saving acts throughout history, and an opportunity to renew one’s commitment to God’s call for service, but as a public witness to God’s love for all the world. To be fully prepared to participate in the work of the people of God – the lietourgia (worship) – that is the vocation of every Christian and of every church, Barbara wanted to be absolutely sure that she remembered to bring along a good attitude! What do you need to add to your “Don’t Forget to Bring to Worship” list? Be God’s, Pastor Bonnie

Barbara Luckenbach went home to God on June 15, 2013. Barbara was an active and beloved participant in the mission and ministry of Shenkel UCC for over 40 years. Her faithful presence in worship, her dedication to Shenkel’s children, Consistory, Community Meals program, choir, and perhaps most of all, her ever-present smile, will be long remembered. We are grateful for Barbara’s journey with us, and we give thanks to God for her many contributions to our church’s ministry as well as in the wider community. Newsletter Editor: Judy Embriani

“Flours” is a collection of pantry items or a monetary donation of your discretion to the Cluster. If a cash donation to the Cluster is made, a wheat arrangement will be placed on the altar. Altar flowers are $30.00 and bulletin dedications are $6.50. Food Sculptures are also gladly accepted. Now you can also dedicate the weekly Choir Anthem with a donation of $30. With ever-increasing costs of choral music, this sponsorship will help stretch our budget and continue to bring quality music to Shenkel. Dedicate your anthem to someone special, an event in your life, or just to the fact that you love music. Thank you for this needed contribution to Shenkel. Blue envelopes are in the Narthex for your sponsorships. The are many dates open for sponsorship and dedication during this and the upcoming months. Please complete one of the special flower/bulletin/anthem envelopes below the sign-up chart, enclose your payment, and either put it in the collection plate or in the Secretary’s box by the office door. You should sign your name on the chart in the narthex by the appropriate date after you have completed your envelope.

Shenkel UCC celebrates the sacrament of Holy Communion at both services on the first Sunday of each month. Each time communion is served, some of the bread and non-alcoholic wine that has been consecrated at the altar will be saved in a traveling communion kit, ready to go to the homes or hospital rooms of members who were unable to be present, and would like to receive the sacrament. Please let Pastor Bonnie know if you, or someone you know, would appreciate “distance-communing” with their Shenkel Church family!

RECOGNIZE THIS CROSS? Hello Friends,

July 7 - Jamie Maximuck - Musician Ariel Royer - Soloist "Pie Jesu" by Faure July 14 - Jamie Maximuck - Musician Ashlyn Augustine - Clarinet Solo

We just returned from our travels through The Baltics. One of our stops in Lithuania was The Hill of Crosses, devoted to the thousands of people who disappeared or were simply shot during the Soviet occupation in the 70s and 80s. We knew we were going to this place that now has over a million crosses of every size and shape, so we purposely took one of our Shenkel crosses to place there as a memorial. So, now there is a little bit of Shenkel in Lithuania at The Hill of Crosses. The photos can't begin to show the size and magnitude of this very spiritual place.

July 21 - Corinne Griffiths - Musician Nina Shenk - Piano Solo

Blessings to all our friends at Shenkel, Doug and Joan Johnson

August 25 - Corinne Griffiths - Musician Tyler Royce, Soloist ―I Can Only Imagine"

These tapes are collected routinely, presented to the store, and Redner’s donates a percentage of your total purchase to the church. Be careful to bring your tapes in regularly instead of saving them at home, as they do expire if not redeemed within a certain time period. Also, please return the entire register tape. Redner’s will not accept any register receipt that has any part of it removed. Keep up the good work and Thank You, Redner’s!

STEWARD’S CORNER “Summer time...when the living is easy”.... I think we sing that song wrong. We need to change it to “when the living is BUSY!” Just check the calendars of your family: vacations, baseball games, a day on the beach, tending a garden...... My own schedule is to hide in Pastor Bonnie’s suitcase and go along to Long Beach, California to check out the activities of United Church of Christ General Synod. It only happens every two years. You can be sure you will hear all about it. There's another lady from our church who goes to that synod and gets souvenirs and brochures to bring back to Shenkel and share the information and happenings of this big event. So I need to go and pack my little bag for this trip, and I hope you all enjoy “Summer…When the living is

easy......busy!” STEWARD (Joining the rat race)

The third Sunday of each month is a time for prayer and anointing. Healing Prayers are offered during all services on that day for anyone who desires individual prayers or prayers on behalf of another in need. The Prayer Chain list is continually being updated. Request for prayers should be placed in the prayer box in the Narthex, or get in touch with any member of the Wholeness Committee. Prayer requests will be carried for one month. If anyone is interested in ministering on the Prayer Chain, please contact Ann Baccari or Freda Wanner. Members of the Wholeness Committee are Ann Baccari, Ted Gray, Tootie and Louise Hine, June Hartung, Carol Stubbe and Freda Wanner.

Agape will be held at Ann Baccari’s home during the months of July and August. Agape is always held the first Wednesday of each month at 7 PM.

PLEASE SAVE THE DATE: SUNDAY, AUGUST 18, 2013 This will be Pastor Bonnie's “last day” with us as she begins her 3 month Sabbatical. Following our church service (between 10:45 - ll:00 AM) there will be a Covered Dish Brunch (You can dig out those breakfast casserole recipes), with any side dish and/or beverage you may wish to bring. Dessert, Coffee and Water will be provided. Sometime in July there will be a Sign-Up chart in the Narthex. We will be in Fellowship Hall, so that weather conditions will not interfere. Pastor Bonnie is looking forward to this time with us, giving her the opportunity to visit with each one of us on a personal level before her departure. If you have any questions you may contact Carol Lykens, Tootie or Louise Hine. Looking forward to being together for this very special day. "God bless us, Everyone" Carol Lykens

PLEASE “NOTE”…….

Save the Date! Shenkel will once again be hosting a community Labor Day Weekend service on Sunday, September 2, at 10 am, in our Grove. Invite your friends and neighbors to this very special occasion for worship which will include participation by at least six Pottstown area congregations, including our neighbors Temple UMC. and Cedarville UMC. You won’t want to miss this special service! Thank you to all the members of the choir who helped fold the Sunday bulletins each and every week during “Choir season.” Thanks, too, to my summer volunteers who have stepped up in the choir’s absence to make sure the bulletins are ready for us Sunday mornings; especially Julie Zachesky and Sharon Sabo.

My sister, Janice Reid, (was the organist at Shenkel for many years) has a son, Jared, who is an E-4 Specialist in the U. S. Army. Jared has recently been deployed to Afghanistan. Many people have been asking me to be sure to provide an address for Jared, and I have one! Jared will be in Afghanistan approximately 10 months and arrived just about a week or so ago. His family would greatly appreciate your prayers and any cards or letters you could send during his deployment. His address needs to be printed just like this: Reid, Jared S. 333rd En Co FOB Pasab Afghanistan APO AE 09370 Thank you, Joan Palubinsky

Dear Shenkel Family, You are all a blessing to me! Judy

Come join us for campfire snacks, barbeque, games, and late-night chatter at the Annual Camp-Out in the grove! When? Saturday, July 13th, beginning at 6 pm. Bring your tents and sleeping gear, a side dish for dinner, and a breakfast item to share with friends, and don't forget your church clothes for the service in the morning!! Hot dogs, smores, drinks and snacks will be provided. Please contact Dave Derman with any questions: 610-323-8173 or david.derman@gmail.com. We will see you there!!!

My sincere and heartfelt appreciation for your many kindnesses...your loving prayers, your visits, your thoughtful cards and calls, and your helping hands. My knee is healing nicely, and I would not have done as well without your prayers and support. It will be four months this week since surgery, and, although I have done well, the surgeon said it will take one year for a complete recovery. There is more healing to come. I am truly blessed to have you in my life. May God bless you always, Love, Carol Lykens

Hello to our Shenkel Friends, We want to thank everyone for their cards, calls and visits to our dad, Karl Metka. There is no record of the visitors Dad receives there at Chestnut Knoll, but we know that Barb and Bill stopped in to see him, and Gary also was there. Thank you very much! Dad might not remember who comes to see him or some of the calls he receives, but we want to thank you, everyone of you for your conversations with Dad. He is doing well, says he likes the meals there, and he does mingle with the other residents a little. He is not a big “mingler” though. LOL! Terry and I have him out most weekends. We wish everyone a wonderful summer, Terry and Karen Metka
