This project aims to revitalize the Union Canal that was once the main transport route between Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Flowing through large areas of farmland and ending close to the central of Edinburgh, the canal will be re-purposed into an independent transport corridor for locally sourced food (farms along the canal) and food related activities (food market).The establishment will contribute to efforts of self-sufficiency addressing pertinent issues of food security due to the domination of the food market by supermarket giants.

Inspired by compactness and mobility of food trailers, market stalls and micro-factories are designed into customized modular ISO containers. Not only does it allow the ease of transport to the food market but can be also easily clipped to the super structure or deployed independently on the ground.

Prior to the individual food market design, we are given 2 weeks of time to perform an detailed field study of a compact food structure of our choice.

My group have chosen a burrito trailer as our subject. Through a series of site research as well as interviews with the owner, we are able to understand not only the hard specifications, but also soft process of food production within the compact space.

PREFABRICATED MODULAR CONSTRUCTION SYSTEM [INDIVIDUAL]

Inspired by the structures of port cranes as well as the off-the-shelve, easily assembled designs of IKEA furnitures, this modularized frame superstructure is designed for easy assembly, making the market possible to expand or even shrink and shift depending on the future development of the area. Functions can also be re-adapted as the spaces and structures are reconfigurable.

I have also design a horizontal twist lock component that helps to ‘clip’ the ISO container modules in place on the surface of the structure. The easy operation is designed to allow frequent repositioning of the containers depending on the need.

PASSIVE FACADE DESIGN AND ASSEMBLY [GROUP]

The ‘clipping’ of ISO containers is inspired by our prior group study and design of a passive facade. We were interested in the hygroscopic properties of wood veneers that enables it to response sensitively to moisture. Apart from the research, we are also tasked to design a 1:1 scale facade with considerations of structure.

Our solution was a lightweight copper rod clipping structure with components custom designed and mass produced with laser cutting.

This project explores how architectural speculation may be deployed through narrative structure, in particular the illustration of subjectivity as an architectural concern.

Our group’s scenario was that of a flooded Perth. We developed a time-line for the event and built a physical model based around this narrative, totally transforming the city as we know it. Various architecture conditions – architecture on land, water-tight architecture that rise above the water and floating architecture - were explored as people slowly adapt and moved to coexist with the flood through various stages of migration. We’ve also employed the theory of Parametric Urbanism to design the density of the new city architecture with logical propositions of areas of high or low density.

As for the individual brief, I have designed a series of submersible for my personal narration within this grand narrative. Functions and architectural forms are also derived from related references such as spaceships and submarines. The entire project demands creativity and logic in developing one’s own site conditions as well as architectural form.

CITY OF ARES [GROUP]

The city of Ares has evolved due to the wrath of God throughout the past century.

The first impact took the city of Old Perth in a matter of days. It could not be fathomed that the water which harnessed life left a path of destruction in its wake. Humans were driven out of their homes and forced to move to higher grounds, leaving the Old City behind. With the loss of their architecture, the people became distant and disconnected from their cultural origins.

The first waves were held back with the building of the Great Dam, Ares. Life seemed peaceful until the second wave brought back the painful memories of separated families and abandoned children only a few decades later.

Human survival instincts drove the adaptation to overcome these circumstances, resulting in the creation of a new world.

First, new buildings were invented which rose out of the water from the grounds that were once parks. As the population oversaturated the confinements of the dam, the city had to expand beyond Ares. Venturing past the Great Dam, the people rediscovered the memories of Old Perth by illuminating the depths of the dark waters and mirroring its forgotten magnificence above the surface.

Nature destroys, humans adapt – this is the Game of Rivals.

PROJECT ATLANTIS [INDIVIDUAL]

The discovery of the Old Perth beyond Aries had been an exhilarating moment for Perthians.

The old city was preserved almost flawlessly, in the same state as it was 70 years ago, as if time had been frozen. Only small traces of corrosion and biological infestation were found on the building facades thanks to the high salt and low oxygen content in deep water. It is now time for Perthians to rediscover their heritage, lost culture and cherished memories.

After years of preparation, finally in Year 2090, Project Atlantis, a series submersible research stations fully dedicated to the excavation and exploration of the archaeological remains of the Old Perth, was launched under the full support of the city council and the people. The ultimate goal is for Perthians to retake what has been taken away from them, to be able to re-inhabit the lost city, so that time in Old Perth can start to tick again. [ N A R R AT I O N ]

Libraries, in my opinion, are more than just vessels for book storage. They have an important social role to play as well in today’s society, they are the ‘living rooms’ and even ‘playgrounds’ for the public. Thus, to fulfill such needs, I have designed my library to be flexible and multi-functional, adopting a “loop” design.

Separation of routes is vital in my design so as to not disrupt library’s original function. Probably inspired by contemporary architects such as Bejarke Ingels, I challenged myself by incorporation a skateboard park into my library design. I designed two sets of circulation routes for the library users and the skateboarders respectively. However, they will eventually meet at the ‘cave’ on the lower level, for it is a flexible public space for everyone.

TECHNICAL SECTION

MORNING The functions and users of the library changes throughout the day. In the morning, few people uses the library and its public space. Most people simply walk past the library and views it as a part of the urban landscape.

NOON In the noon, people take advantage of the siesta breaks to relax in the library and the enjoy the coolness of the air-conditioned interior. Few people uses the outdoor public space under the hot sun.

EVENING In the evening, both the library and the public space becomes busy as people can enjoy reading after work or school. Parents of the nearby school will also use the public space or library while waiting for their kids. Skateboarders will also start to gather and use the skateboarding public spaces. Groups of teenagers can also meet up in the public spaces and chill.

This project explores a hybrid of living and working. I designed a house for a yoga teacher that serves both as a home and a yoga studio. I have two main design objectives, to create a spiritual environment for the practice of Yoga both privately and publicly as well as cleverly designing a dual circulation that effectively separates the private and public spaces.

In my final design, I’ve created multiple spaces for the practice of Yoga throughout the houses - the main yoga room located on the second floor, the outdoor roof space and the private interior garden for personal practice. The yoga room has a unique ceiling that rises up gradually, creating an atmosphere akin to the ascending of one’s spiritual being. The interior garden is also designed to provide a zen space for the houseonwer to practice yoga in her private time.

In order to accommodate the dual functions of the house, a double stairs is designed as the intersection of the public and private space but still retaining the necessary privacy of the everyday life. It also effectively uses the space as both stairs exist in a common space.

Within a dense city-scape like Singapore, the integrated connectivity within the city is integral for the city to function efficiently.

Singapore in short, functions well as a walkable city. The idea that one could walk freely on the streets, walkway, in and out of the building and in between buildings inspire us to create a walkable campus. Our campus is not a stand- alone building, but one that breaks the boundaries between the public and private realm. Public open spaces are created not just with the student body in mind but the public as well. The campus becomes part of a bigger city network, creating opportunity for encounter and interaction as well as convenience and efficiency.

The relevance of a traditional public library is greatly challenged by digital age when everything is digitally archived. To offer an answer to this dilemma of public libraries, the Dandelion Library takes the unmaned aerial vehicle as a design driving factor, with the intention to investigate the reach of a public library in the future when this technology is eventually adopted by the public sector to deliver digital literacy to the mass public. When people do not visit the library, the library reaches to them.

Since this design proposal speculates on the near future where the use of unmanned aerial vehicle is becoming increasingly commonplace in London City. A public library needs to have the physical infrastructure to support this.

PYRAMIDEN

Pyramiden, an abandoned soviet mining town, is a land of deserted memories; contemporary conservation methods cannot fully preserve the intangible qualities of such land. The land is also inaccessible and cursed with long winters from October to Feburary.

We transformed Pyramiden into a sanctuary for rehabitation. Inhabitatants are limited in their freedom to arrive and depart from the sanctuary due to

seasonal icing of the sea, acknowledging the fact that behavior changes are significant only after a long enough period of time.

In brief, we proposed preservation in a form of parallel adaptation of the atmosphere of painful memories in the past. Therefore, the proposal reinforces the relationship between humanity and nature of Pyramiden.

THE GREENHOUSE [ LO CAT I O N ] B E I J I N G , C H I N A [WORK] INVITED COMPETITION [TEAM]

GREEN = Sustainability, Public Space HOUSE = Community, Destination In an attempt to address the issue of both social exclusion and the marginalization of public space, ‘The Greenhouse’ offers a creative solution to a commercial belief. The proposal employs components of an active lifestyle which creates a unique social sustainability to the surrounding community.

Located at the south east of Beijing near the Sixth Ring highway, the site is at the center of a newly planned university zone as well as a series of new residential developments. In face of a potential surge of young people and families, the design concept seeks to create an urban centre that traditionally revolves around a shared civic space.

In this proposal, combinations of commercial activities - retail, entertainment and F&B venues - and shared spaces serve as the catalyst for attraction of the surrounding population or people from even further areas. The mall will no longer be a place for shops and retail, but focused more on creating an communal atmosphere that benefits both the patrons as well as the shops,.

The ‘sky street’ not only fulfills its role as a gathering space, but also creates commercial values that are appealing to the mall developer. Where traditionally, top levels of a shopping mall are relatively ‘cold’ and unpopular due to travel distance, the ‘sky street’ at The Greenhouse draws the public straight to the top floors. The design creates an alternative top-down circulation that maximizes the shop coverage of the mall. A balance between creating public friendly spaces and satisfying the commercial needs of the developer is therefore achieved.
