Love One Another: Building Campus Family Bonds

The Shenandoah Valley Academy (SVA) school year kicks-off with worships, fun activities, and outings that unite students through shared challenges and experiences. Numerous interactive events facilitate students developing strong Christ-centered relationships, with friends, faculty, and staff mentors that guide behavior and inspire service to others. As bonds develop with Jesus Christ and within the school family student conduct is determined not merely by rules, rather by relationships based in love. Jesus said, “…so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete… love each other as I have loved you.” John 15:11-12 NIV

Led by president Andres Munoz ’26 and his hard-working band of officers, the 2024-2025 Student Association (SA) capably led many of these activities with enthusiasm and heart. SA activities give a boost to the new school year: Handshake, Almost Anything Goes Saturday night class competition, SA Fall Picnic consistent with the finest SVA tradition. The result is a united campus family, with school and class spirit running high, an opportunity for every student to make a positive contribution to campus culture.

Read what students have to say about SVA fun and relationships...

My favorite thing about Student Association Picnic is how all the classes come together as one whole big family.

- Nancy Majano ‘25

It was a fun day, especially with Christian-like connection. Even though it is a class-on-class event, we all supported each other and cheered everyone on.

- Kryza Carrasco ‘27

The fact that it’s so early on in the year really helps you meet a lot of people.

- Sam Onoffrey ‘28

It was fun seeing the classes working together and bonding, the friendly competition and the happy faces.

- Kendri Gordon ‘27

I really like the canoeing and class competitions. It helped me connect with my class and we got to know each other better. I also really enjoy swimming.

- Deja Burnell ‘28

One of my favorite memories was one when the seniors and juniors tied, even though I think the juniors really won.

- Ashley Hernandez ‘26

The activities are really fun to watch, each class competes, especially the juniors vs. seniors with their rivalry.

- Seth Job ‘25

I really enjoyed the class-on-class competition, and all the chants and class spirit from the Class of 2026 juniors!

- Evelin Balcarcel ‘26

The SA Picnic was super fun! I enjoy the class-on-class events, which are very creative and exciting.

- Matthew Hernandez ‘26

SA Picnic was a blast! The weather was great and the competition strong. We all had a great time getting to know each other as we fought for victory.

CHRIST TRUTH FREEDOM

Dear Alumni and Friends, it is only because of your financial investment and prayers that the Shenandoah Valley Academy (SVA) mission to educate disciples of Jesus and the sustainability of this special school is possible. THANK YOU to you who invest financially to sustain a robust Adventist boarding school program that is resulting in the SVA vision-Serve God, Value Knowledge, Accept a Life of Service-fulfilled in the lives of students and graduates.

The 2024-2025 school year theme CHRIST - TRUTH – FREEDOM is from John 8:31-32 where Jesus promises, "If you abide in my word, you are my disciples indeed. And you will know the truth and the truth will set you free." Student Andrew Martin ’26, a new Christian, recently shared in chapel…

God gave us the special gift of freedom. This means we can serve Him or choose not to serve Him. He offers us a choice. We can serve God and listen when He is calling, or we can choose the only other path and give our rights and freedom over to Satan. The truth is that God wants you to be with Him, to accept what He has already bought for you; He wants to spend eternity with you because He created you and loves you unconditionally. As a loving father, God will not force His love upon you…. He wants you to make that choice for yourself! He gives you the freedom to say, “I love God and He loves me, that's how it is and how it will forever be.”

MOST IMPORTANTLY your generous financial gifts helped provide more than $1,250,000 in tuition assistance and scholarships to qualified students. Your worthy student gifts help fund crucial need-based tuition assistance. Your unrestricted gifts support a quality school program, capital improvements, as well as tuition assistance, scholarships, and student wages. Thank you for your generous giving that makes everything at SVA possible for students!

For year 2025-2026, it is rich in spiritual growth, academic progress, and character development. Classrooms, dorms, cafeteria, athletic fields are alive with energy, laughter, and music, all bathed in prayer. There is so much happiness here with so many positive Christian students! They are making good choices, enjoying positive activities, overcoming media addictions with “real life,” standing up to follow Christ, committing to Bible study, forming healthy relationships, and working for the good of others. Students have many opportunities to learn and to lead in the context of being children of the King. This recipe to counteract the culture of the world is very effective!

Here is what you made possible for fiscal year July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025: Financial gifts from you and others, for school operations, tuition assistance, and projects, totaled $2,772,680 to the SVA Annual Fund. Because of your consistent, generous financial support, SVA had an operating increase for the tenth consecutive year. This ten-year positive trend is only possible because of your unwavering generosity and commitment!

Sincere thanks to you Alumni and Friends, for your prayers and generous financial support. It is an incredible privilege and mission that--together--we are educating the next generation of Christ’s disciples! Please join me in praying for the Shenandoah family, precious students and families, dedicated faculty and staff, Alumni and Friends. May we embrace the truth and freedom Jesus offers and say, “I love God and He loves me… and that’s how it forever will be.”

With Gratitude,

Principal Short leads Junior New England Study Tour.

Students Inspired by Life-Changing GC Session Music Tour

At the 52nd General Conference (GC) Session in St. Louis, the Shenandoah Valley Academy (SVA) Music Department had the opportunity to shine. SVA Music performed in concerts on the convention center main and theater stages, held pop-up concerts throughout the week, entertained at the SVA booth in the exhibition hall, and even showcased their talent on Three Angels Broadcasting Network. Director Daniel Biaggi and Associate Director Kelly Wiedemann Jaén led the inspiring tour, accompanied by incoming SVA Music Director Andrés Mendoza, along with a group of Alumni musicians.

Additionally, the tour created space for faculty and students to connect beyond the classroom. “Whether sharing meals, rehearsing together or praying before a performance, the tone was one of mutual respect, warmth and joy. We laughed, learned and worshiped as a family,” says Mendoza.

A special highlight was participating in the mass choir and orchestra made up of believers from across the globe. Through their singing and playing, the students shared the gospel with people in the arena and online. They worshiped God with powerful renditions of “Holy, Holy, Holy,” “No More Night,” “Hallelujah” chorus, and “We Have This Hope,” featuring Wintley Phipps, renowned Pastor and gospel singer.

“Being part of the SVA orchestra and the international choir was life-changing, opening my eyes to how global, diverse, and united the Adventist Church is,” says Samantha Trigo ’25.

“The music was more than a performance, it was ministry. The harmony created wasn’t only musical—it reflected the unity of our church and the beauty of worshiping together across cultures and languages,” affirms Mendoza.

When the students—dressed in performance attire—walked through the

concourse carrying instruments and choir folders, people asked what academy they were from, excited to see a large group of teenage musicians sharing music at a major function of the world church.

"Here I was, a musician among thousands, preparing to offer my gift in service to something far greater than myself. In morning worship, we affirmed our purpose, and I felt a new song in my heart as I gave myself up for God to use. Performing ‘We Have This Hope,’ I felt connected to my peers, my church, and most importantly, my God,” shares Sophia Trigo ’26.

"Thinking back to my first GC Session, it was inspiring to really see and feel the global impact of the church. Now to watch my students experience that is a teacher’s dream come true,” says Wiedemann Jaén.

Mendoza agrees, “One of the greatest blessings of the trip was seeing students catch a glimpse of the global church and realize they are part of something much larger than themselves. To witness them serve through music and worship on an international stage—and to see them respond with maturity, joy and a deepening faith—was truly moving.”

December marked 50 years of Christmas Candlelight Concerts on the campus of Shenandoah Valley Academy. When talented students are joined by Alumni, dedicated faculty members, expert accompanists, led by passionate and skilled directors, the result is hearts overflowing with joy in worship of our Savior and King.

THANK YOU FOR GIVING TO SVA THIS YEAR.

Each November students participate in a school-wide Thank-a-Thon to say a special THANK YOU to Alumni and Friends who make financial gifts to sustain the students and mission of Shenandoah. As a school family we thank the wonderful donors who help make everything that happens at SVA possible for students. The students are a delight and make the day a lot of fun. You may have received one of their thank you notes, wonderfully touching and full of gratitude. Here is what they have to say…

My favorite thing about SVA is… the beautiful spirituality and feeling of family here • all the encouraging staff and positive student body • the people, officially my class. I love how we’re a family • the importance placed on a Christ-centered life • the music program because it lifts everyone’s spirits, with music tours and the privilege of sharing music with many churches and people • playing basketball and being with friends • the music program • playing basketball with my friends, as a team • my friends, and the music program • the work program and the skills I am learning in my job helping manage the vehicles on campus • how you

can feel God’s presence on campus • the people because they truly create an enjoyable and safe atmosphere • the music and sports programs • how I can learn more about God • the community, environment, and staff • the amazing music department and all the loving staff • its structure and spirituality • the people and teachers. I love the campus--it is so great!

It means a lot for me to attend SVA because… this school has helped me better myself and grow in my relationship with God • it allows me to grow and learn in a Christ-centered environment, furthering my walk with Jesus • I have the opportunity to receive an education and learn, and to grow my relationship with God • I learn about God and I am receiving a great education, can use the knowledge I’m gaining to share the Bible • all my relatives also attended SVA, and I’m growing in my relationship with Christ • the music, atmosphere, spirituality is so uplifting. I love this school so much! • I finally have a chance to go to school with my cousin and it actually means a lot for me • I really wanted to find a school that connects me closer to music

and God • no other place offers a spiritual environment quite like SVA • my parents went here and I love the campus • it gives me a family to lean on • I come from a family that isn’t very well-off money-wise so its a blessing to be here • it challenges me to strive for excellence and to grow in all aspects of life • it is guiding me on a good spiritual path • it allows me to have a clearer path in my education and to God • I can study in a school that cares about me, and I can grow spiritually • the schools in my hometown do not provide the support and spirituality like this school.

Thank you for giving to make this possible for me.

Weekend Testimony

SVA has been such a blessing to me and in my walk with God, particularly how He has helped me with trials and challenges. It is easy to be spiritual on this campus. You feel secure and supported by everyone here. And I have to mention: you can tell the kind of school this is by the faculty and staff members. I am grateful they really care about their students.

My senior year, because of life challenges and disappointments, loneliness and despair crept into my heart. Even though I had learned a lot about God, I hadn’t put it into practice in my life. I prayed in times of worry but failed to see God was already working. Still, I was excited to start the new school year. However, I felt alone because of challenges at home, in relationships, and unmet expectations for how I thought the new year should go. It’s no surprise that choosing to trust God was the move. When I chose to trust God with my challenges, new opportunities replaced disappointments, and He filled me with joy and contentment. You can’t go through things alone. You need family, and SVA is the place where you make family. I have chosen forever family here at SVA. I have witnessed God working at this school and am thankful the students’ eyes are opened to see Him, to see the better way. A text that helped me during hard times says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, the old has gone. The new has come.” - II Cor. 5:17 God promises when we give ourselves to Him, He will remove the old, the loneliness, the despair that I know we all struggle with, and fill us with His goodness and fulfillment. God is so good. He really is. I am grateful to SVA for letting me see that.

Baptism Testimony

When I came to SVA I had no relationship with God and didn’t want anything to do with Him. I wasn’t Christian. I was determined to find happiness on my own and didn’t want anyone telling me who I was or what I had to do. I spent many years fighting with God and would push Him away and do things I knew were wrong just because they were fun in the moment. I wrestled with God so much. As someone who claimed she didn’t believe in God, at the same time I was somehow so angry at Him. It wasn’t until I came to SVA and experienced the atmosphere of being among true followers of Christ. The people at SVA are not like people I see anywhere else: they're so genuinely devoted to Christ. It’s such a blessing to have been here because without this school, without Pastor Harley and Mr. Leeper, without my Mom and my stepdad, without this school family, I wouldn’t be standing here today—so thank you everyone. This baptism is me wholeheartedly wanting to start my walk with God.

Before attending SVA, my family and friends brought me to the Spring sacred concert to see the choir and Shenandoans in person. Hearing them, I was amazed and fell in love with the music department. I prayed: “Lord, I want to be a part of what they have because you are clearly in it.” Fast forward, I enrolled at SVA and felt the Lord call me to try out for choir. I was very nervous and a little afraid of Mr. Biaggi, but I trusted God’s plan for me. Fast forward again, now I’m in choir and Shenandoans, Mr. Biaggi is actually really kind, and I have learned all kinds of music and Who we sing it for.

Choir and Shens travel to many places, near and far. One place we’ve traveled is the Dominican Republic to serve God’s people and share His message. It was my first time flying, but I trusted God and was ready to serve as much as I could. We sang many places: in public venues as well as at Adventist, public, elementary, high, and K-12 schools. The K-12 Adventist school where we taught music five hours a day stands out. I helped supervise music in the fifthgrade class and for younger children too. We taught them songs we sing in performances. It was heartwarming how the little children gave their all to sing songs they were hearing for the first time. Some were too shy to sing--others wanted to sing a solo! I became friends with the children and we played together a lot. I still pray for them, their families, and school. Overall, I am thankful for what I have experienced as a member of the choirs, and for what God taught me on this special trip.

Each October, SVA hosts the annual "Academy Days" preview event. Prospective students receive a crash course in the advantages of an excellent Adventist Christian boarding school education: tour campus, stay in the dorms, play games, eat in the farm to table cafeteria, visit classes, hear student testimonies, audition for music and athletics, and merit scholarships are awarded. If you know a student who should be at SVA, contact recruiter Jennifer.Espinoza@svasda.org.

Student Testimonies: "I love this school so much!"

Andrew Martin ‘26

First of all, I’d never been to an Adventist school, didn’t grow up in an Adventist community, my family is not Adventist or religious in any way. But my grandma graduated here in 1961— a great time to graduate! And she’s the only Adventist in my family, and how I found out about God. Spending summers at her house is always special to me because that is when we pray before we eat. My family doesn’t do any of that. You know, they are not against religion, they just don’t practice it. This school is very special to me because, number one, it converted me to Adventism. I was never a Christian before, never thought about it before until I came to this school. At the first vespers of the year, I said to Principal Short, “You can really feel the Holy Spirit moving here.” I didn’t even know what the Holy Spirit was! I just heard about it in class, and I thought: That’s what this feels like. From sophomore year to now as a senior, I feel like God is shifting my heart and spoke to me. He’s not even close to being done yet. But He’s definitely started the work which is a blessing. It’s a blessing!

The teachers here are also an amazing blessing. The teachers at my old school couldn’t care less about you. All they cared about was if you were in class, sitting down and doing the work. And if you weren’t, they also really didn’t care about that. Here, they care about you as a person, about your personal growth, which is something I admire about these people. I mean, it’s amazing. And the students as well. My Dad comes to visit and says, “Man, I wish I went to school here because you guys have such a special community, you get to play outside,” and he sees us in church. It’s a family bond here that’s really special. You don’t get that at any other school. You really don’t. Over the summer I went canvassing with Pastor Diego (Rodriguez). If it wasn’t for SVA I wouldn’t have that opportunity. Working with Pastor Diego, I learned a bunch

Elijah Masikonde ‘28

I’m actually the first Adventist in my family. My parents aren’t really Christian. Some of my family don’t really like God at all. How I came here… I attended a different church with my grandma, but then she moved away. And so I prayed even though I didn’t know God that much. I was only going to church for the food. I wanted to go to a different church for more food and started asking God where to go (at least I was trying even if for the wrong reasons). That same week, my mom received a call from one of her friends whose four-year-old little girl I babysat invited me to Manassas Church. That was a big blessing! It took me a while to get used to it, but then I joined Pathfinders, got more involved in church, and grew in my relationship with God. But at the same time I was going to public school which is a very bad environment. I had two lives: my church life and then public school life. I’d hang out with people who smoked, vaped, did a bunch of bad stuff. It was a bad environment. I was sad and not happy at all at that school. I didn’t have a way to escape. Where could I go? There’s no other way to put it: I was drowning and God pulled me out of the water and brought me to this blessing, this school. I’m so happy, so grateful He did this for me! Looking back, the people at public school were not healthy friends to have. At SVA I’ve made so many good friends and we’ve developed bonds that will last for the rest of our lives. I couldn’t be happier here. Like Andrew, I too went canvassing and only had that opportunity because I attend SVA. While
