Consent

Freely-given Reversible Informed Enthusiastic Specific

What is sexual assault? The term sexual assault refers to sexual contact or behavior that occurs without explicit consent from the victim. Sexual assault can include attempted or completed penetration (also known rape), as well as unwanted touching, fondling, forced sex acts, and other non-consensual sexual behaviors.

Freely-given All sexual partners are able to consent without any threats, coercion, manipulation, or uncertainty, and are in a mindset to consent (legal age, no drugs or alcohol).

Experiencing sexual violence can be a traumatizing and confusing experience, and it's normal to feel unsure about how to work through that trauma. Shelterhouse is here to support whatever decision you make. We can talk you through options, advocate for you, help you navigate the legal system, or just provide a listening ear. We offer free & confidential Sexual Assault Nursing Examinations where we can collect and store evidence for up to a year.

Reversible All sexual partners are able to revoke consent at any time for any reason if they are uncomfortable or unenthusiastic. No explanation or justification is needed.

Informed

1 in 3 women & 1 in 6 men will experience sexual assault in their lifetime.

What are my options after experiencing sexual assault?

All sexual partners are open and honest with each other about their expectations for the sexual relationship, STD status, or any other potential risks.

Enthusiastic All sexual partners are excited and willing throughout the whole interaction with no uncertainty or hesitation. "Maybe" or "I don't know" means "NO."

Specific Each sexual interaction/action is consented to ahead of time, even if you have done it before.

We have advocates who can walk you through the legal process and/or accompany you to court if needed. Our team of therapists and social workers can offer one-on-one counseling or recommend support groups for you. If you need shelter to escape from your abuser, we offer safe refuge for both you and your children, if necessary.
