ational Nutrition Month® is an annual nutrition education campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. National Nutrition Month focuses on the importance of making informed food choices. This year’s theme is Eat Right, Bite by Bite,® and the Larsen Pavilion Nutrition Services team is cooking up a host of appealing meal options that support the dietary health of Pavilion residents. According to the Academy, healthy eating doesn’t have to be overwhelming. They suggest that each individual eat a variety of nutritious foods every day, such as vegetables. Dark-green, red and orange vegetables are suggested, in addition to beans and peas. To help Pavilion residents meet this recommendation, the Pavilion Nutrition Services team always has healthy vegetable options on hand that are fresh – and never frozen. Another suggestions from the Academy is to eat a variety of fruits. The fruit served at the Pavilion is fresh, frozen or canned, but canned fruit is always prepared in its own juice with no sugar added. A variety of protein choices is also important to a healthy diet, such as seafood, poultry, eggs and meat. The Pavilion menus offer a variety of these options, using a five-week menu cycle to ensure appealing options for

its residents. In addition, there are always alternatives available to the written menu that are posted in each resident’s room as well as in the Schilling Dining Room.

Honoring the Nutrition Experts

Another health-conscious observance, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day is celebrated on the second Wednesday of March. This occasion acknowledges the importance of the registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) role as a nutrition expert, providing educational knowledge and services about food and nutrition. Registered Dietitian Nutritionist day recognizes both RDNs along with nutrition and dietetic technicians, who are also recognized for their commitment to helping people enjoy healthy lives. The Larsen Pavilion’s registered dietitian, Laura Norris, MS, RD, LDN, joined Shell Point in October 2019. Laura oversees the nutritional component of residents’ meals. She has also served a guest speaker at various Shell Point support group meetings to educate independent living residents. Happy Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day, Laura!
