Why Shell Point? By Rachel Zellers, Director of Long Term Care

I

have worked in long term care for 30 years, including more than 20 years as a nursing home administrator. Shell Point was on my radar from the time I arrived in Florida twoand-a-half years ago. So, I was excited when the position of Director of Long Term Care became available. And I was ecstatic when I was offered the position. Why was Shell Point on my radar? Why did I want to work here? Simply, because Shell Point is truly unique. As a ministry of The Christian Missionary Alliance, faith is lived out at Shell Point. The core values say it all:

Caring for residents and employees Serving residents and employees Satisfying residents and employees I have seen these core values in action every day. They are demonstrated in the staffing levels that both residents and employees benefit from, as well as the resources that are generously provided. They are demonstrated in the excellent care and in the wide range of services available. They are demonstrated in the commitment of

the staff in assuring the residents are well cared for, even in difficult circumstances such as a disaster. Let me give you the concrete example of a disaster drill that occurred in January. First, I have never experienced such a thorough drill in my entire career. Involving EMS and the Fire Company provided important crucial training not only for Pavilion staff, but also for the members of these organizations. And I was humbled by the number of residents who volunteered to participate as “victims.” The rehab department rearranged their treatment schedules and appointments to allow use of the therapy gym. And all the Pavilion staff performed admirably. Maintenance and safety staff supported the Pavilion team and the SPTV department filmed and photographed the event to provide a record of what occurred so it could be reviewed later. It truly was a team effort! I’m sure that each of you also have concrete examples you could share that support why you chose to work or live at Shell Point. I’d love to hear them!
