The dado rail gives a professional finish to the wall; simple (or flat) and rebated dado rails are the most common profiles. The panels below the dado rail can be manufactured from a variety of wood types, including rosewood and clear pine. Depending on their style and installation, there are several kinds of panels, namely: 1. Tongue and groove dado panels These are cut so that the tongue of one board is cut to interlock with the groove of the adjacent one, so that the panels lay flat against the wall.

Tongue and groove boards are a popular choice for exterior walls, mainly for their functional purpose of keeping the elements away, but they can also be fitted indoors. These boards can be installed either vertically or horizontally, and work well in any country style room.

2. Victorian and Georgian dado panels

Some boards have a real Victorian or Georgian feel to them. Usually, inset rectangles framed by rounded beading are typically Victorian in style, while Georgian panelling is characterized by a simple moulding that elegantly frames a raised panel. The panels should be symmetrical, but you can choose to get them in portrait style, landscape or both.

Installing dado panels First, you will need to determine the number of panels you need for each wall. Measure the length of the wall in millimeters, divide it by the panel width (according to the panel widths available at your supplier’s), and round up.

If you want to fit the panelling over an existing wall, you have two choices: remove the skirting first (note this can be quite expensive), or install it above the existing skirting, but make sure it is thick enough and has a flat top so that the panel rests on the wall. Then butt the panel onto the architrave; you should still have enough space left for the framing of the panel.

However, if the skirting is are not thick enough, but you still don't want to remove it, consider placing the dado upside down to create a rebate into which the panel can go, but note that the end result may not be as visually pleasing as when you have the skirting removed.

Use end strips at external corners if necessary. Once all panels and rails are installed, you can paint the panelling to better match your dĂŠcor.
