The exhibition Go Big Red presents numerous perspectives on the power of red—the school color chosen by University of Nebraska students in 1892.

La exposición Go Big Red presenta numerosas perspectivas sobre el poder del rojo, el color elegido por los estudiantes de la Universidad de Nebraska en 1892.

Each artwork was selected from the museum’s collection by a member of the university community—a network that extends from the campus to the city of Lincoln, the state, and beyond. The chosen works span history, genres, styles, and media, just as the participants and their reflections represent the distinctive individuals who have come together to realize this exhibition.

Cada obra de arte fue seleccionada de la colección del museo por un miembro de la comunidad universitaria, una red que se extiende desde el campus hasta la ciudad de Lincoln, el estado y más allá. Derrick Adams Silver Lining

The first thing that struck me about this work were the footsteps that look like they’re taking a step into the dark. Leaving the colorful and warm comfort of the known for the sometimes frightening unknown.

This image has a particular meaning for me as a Black woman— sometimes just leaving the house can feel like I’m stepping into a frightening unknown. I’ve had many negative and racially charged interactions with neighbors and peers, and when I was younger that made it difficult to leave my house, full of warmth and love. The unknown remains frightening until one takes those first few steps, as daunting as they may be. For me this artwork feels like courage, like bravery. I hope that my perspective helps you look at this print differently and helps give you courage to take those first steps.

Lo primero que me llamó la atención de esta obra fueron las pisadas que parecen dar un paso hacia la oscuridad. Dejar atrás la comodidad colorida y cálida de lo conocido para adentrarse en lo desconocido, que a veces da miedo. Esta imagen tiene un significado muy particular para mí como mujer negra: a veces, simplemente salir de casa puede sentirse como entrar en algo aterrador e incierto. He tenido muchas experiencias negativas y cargadas de racismo con vecinos y conocidos, y cuando era más joven eso me dificultaba salir de mi casa, que estaba llena de amor y calidez. Lo desconocido sigue siendo aterrador hasta que uno da esos primeros pasos, por más abrumadores que parezcan. Para mí, esta obra se siente como coraje, como valentía.

Espero que mi perspectiva te ayude a ver esta impresión de otra manera y que te dé valor para dar esos primeros pasos.

Ilya Bolotowsky Red Tondo

Ilya Bolotowsky’s Red Tondo is more than a painting—it’s a visual call to action. Its bold geometry and striking red palette invite us to consider how balance, focus, and boldness can elevate both art and life.

In Bolotowsky’s carefully composed world of circles, lines, and arcs, we see a clear metaphor for leveling up: the pursuit of precision, growth, and harmony.

The circular canvas challenges the viewer to think beyond the usual boundaries of the square, just as our team challenges conventional limits to push forward and achieve more. The dominant red commands attention, much like the passion and determination needed to rise to the next level in any endeavor. Meanwhile, the subtle interplay of other colors and lines reminds us that collaboration and adaptability are essential to growth.

As a team, we embody this spirit of leveling up. Like Bolotowsky’s masterful use of space, we strive for balance between ambition and strategy. And, like the bold red that anchors this work, we approach every challenge with unwavering intensity.

Standing before Red Tondo, we are reminded: the path to greatness requires focus, creativity, and the courage to redraw the boundaries of what’s possible. Let’s level up together—Go Big Red!

Tondo Rojo, de Ilya Bolotowsky, es más que una pintura: es un llamado visual a la acción. Su geometría audaz y su impactante paleta roja nos invitan a reflexionar sobre cómo el equilibrio, el enfoque y la valentía pueden elevar tanto el arte como la vida.

En el mundo cuidadosamente compuesto de Bolotowsky; hecho de círculos, líneas y arcos, vemos una metáfora clara del crecimiento: la búsqueda de la precisión, el desarrollo y la armonía.

Alexander Calder Sumac II

Some art immediately draws you in—it makes you feel something or remember someone, for example. Other art, you must spend time with. For me, Alexander Calder’s nonobjective Sumac II falls in the latter category. I had to spend time with it, observe it, think about it.

And then I began to see it. Birds. Leaves on a fall day. The skeleton of a fish perhaps.

Something paradoxically organic and industrial all at the same time. The deeper you look and the more patient you are, the more you see. The artwork is as much about the air around it (and the light and shadows it casts) as it is about the vibrant red metal and wire that forms it. Sumac II subtly moves in response to its environment; it gracefully maintains balance and a sense of equilibrium.

On this day and in this moment, these are the qualities that speak to me—subtly, grace, balance, and equilibrium in response to forces around us. Go Big Red!

Algunas obras de arte te atrapan de inmediato; te hacen sentir algo o recordar a alguien, por ejemplo. Otras requieren tiempo.

Para mí, la escultura no objetiva de Alexander Calder, Sumac II, pertenece a esta segunda categoría. Tuve que pasar tiempo con ella, observarla, reflexionar. Y entonces empecé a verla. Pájaros. Hojas en un día otoñal. Tal vez el esqueleto de un pez. Algo que es paradójicamente orgánico e industrial al mismo tiempo. Cuanto más profundo miras y más paciencia tienes, más ves. La obra trata tanto del aire que la rodea (y de la luz y las sombras que proyecta) como del vibrante metal rojo y alambre que la conforman.

Clarence Holbrook Carter Mandala No. 2

I am drawn to this screen print for two primary reasons. First, as someone familiar with the traditional mandala of eastern religions, I find Clarence Holbrook Carter’s softening of the traditional linear geometric shapes soothing and inviting. Its relative simplicity and lack of clutter is also appealing and, for me, induces a sense of calm the more time I spend with it.

Second, I find the use of color very effective and clever. The dramatic reds, something I usually associate with anger or unrest, draw me to the work, while the pseudo-concentric ovals and lighter shades of red lead my eyes to the small circle of light. The dark band at the bottom grounds the whole piece and provides a reference. It is as if the artist is asking the viewer to bring their anxieties, worries, and anger into a tunnel and then to gradually traverse it with the promise of light and hope at the end.

Me siento atraído por esta serigrafía por dos razones principales. Primero, como alguien familiarizado con el mandala tradicional de las religiones orientales, encuentro que la suavización que hace Clarence Holbrook Carter de las formas geométricas lineales tradicionales resulta reconfortante y acogedora. Su relativa simplicidad y la ausencia de elementos recargados también me resultan atractivas y, en lo personal, me inducen una sensación de calma cuanto más tiempo paso frente a la obra. Segundo, me parece que el uso del color es muy efectivo e inteligente. Los rojos intensos, que normalmente asocio con la ira o la inquietud, me atraen hacia la obra, mientras que los óvalos pseudo concéntricos y los tonos más claros de rojo conducen mi mirada hacia el pequeño círculo de luz. Ned Cartledge Watermelon Slices

Eating watermelon on a hot, sunny summer day. It’s a slice (pun intended) of Americana.

Seeing Ned Cartledge’s Watermelon Slices instantly takes me to the Fourth of July—the most American day of the year. It’s also a great day for baseball for sports fans like me.

Call it the perfect doubleheader—fireworks and fastballs, family and food. And no combination would be complete without watermelon. Ice-cold, cut-thick watermelon piled high on a picnic table.

In Cartledge’s sculpture, the bold, playful watermelon slices look ready to be passed around after a backyard ballgame. We’d play until the sun started to set, then gather with stained shirts and dusty knees. Each of us would grab a watermelon slice like it was a trophy. Forget the sticky hands and the seeds spit to the ground. The anticipated watermelon feasts were the perfect conclusion to an unforgettable day at the ballfield. Cartledge’s Watermelon Slices doesn’t just depict watermelon—it celebrates it.

There’s something about watermelon that tastes like childhood and tradition. And in this sculpture, you can feel that. It’s not just about fruit—it’s about moments. The kind that stay with you long after the last sparkler burns out and the final pitch is thrown.

This work of art hits just like a walk-off homer: simple, sweet, and straight to the heart of summer.

Comer sandía en un día soleado y caluroso de verano. Es una rodaja del alma estadounidense. Ver Rodajas de Sandía de Ned Cartledge me transporta instantáneamente al Cuatro de Julio; el día más estadounidense del año. También es un gran día para el béisbol, para quienes amamos los deportes. Es el doble juego perfecto: fuegos artificiales y rectas rápidas, familia y comida. Y ninguna de esas combinaciones estaría completa sin la sandía. Sandía bien fría, cortada en gruesas rodajas y amontonada en la mesa del picnic.

En la escultura de Cartledge, las rebanadas de sandía, audaces y juguetonas, parecen estar listas para repartirse después de un partido de béisbol en el patio. Jugábamos hasta que empezaba a caer el sol, luego nos reuníamos con camisetas manchadas y rodillas polvorientas. Cada quien tomaba una rodaja de sandía como si fuera un trofeo. No importaban las manos pegajosas ni las semillas escupidas al suelo. Aquellos festines de sandía eran la conclusión perfecta de un día inolvidable en el campo de juego. Rodajas de Sandía no solo representa sandía: la celebra.

Hay algo en la sandía que sabe a infancia y a tradición. Y en esta escultura, se siente eso. No se trata solo de fruta, se trata de momentos. De esos que se quedan contigo mucho después de que se apaga la última estrellita y se lanza el último strike.

Esta obra de arte impacta como un jonrón con el que se gana el partido: simple, dulce y directo al corazón del verano.

Sarah Charlesworth Candle

Through composition, color saturation, and conceptual depth, Sarah Charlesworth elevates the ordinary into the extraordinary.

Using simple materials and carefully staged arrangements, the artist makes a single object takes on the quality of an offering— paying homage to the physical properties of art while transforming the creative process into a ritualistic or meditative experience.

By abstracting a single candle against a saturated, monochromatic background, the artist dissolves the boundary between the subject and its surroundings, blurring the line between symbol and image. Suspended in this uncanny, single-color space, the object (the candle) takes on a heightened presence, existing in a realm between familiarity and abstraction.

Both the subject and its photographic realization evoke a sense of beginnings— an entry point into visual language that reveals the enigmatic double lives of familiar objects.

A través de la composición, la saturación del color y la profundidad conceptual, Sarah Charlesworth eleva lo ordinario a lo extraordinario. Usando materiales simples y arreglos cuidadosamente escenificados, la artista hace que un solo objeto adquiera la cualidad de una ofrenda, rindiendo homenaje a las propiedades físicas del arte mientras transforma el proceso creativo en una experiencia ritual o meditativa.

José Davila Huelga Estudiantil

The Student Strike of 1973 took place at the University of Puerto Rico Río Piedras Campus (UPR-RP) for approximately 44 days to defend the democracy of the university system. This strike occurred at UPR-RP to demand an increase in student participation in appointing university presidents.

Several external factors contributed to students choosing to organize and protest.

For example, the independence of Puerto Rico has been a debate that has existed since the colonization of the land of Borikén (Taíno indigenous name) by Spain and then later the United States. In 1968, the victory of the New Progressive Party (PNP) represented a strong shift in the Puerto Rican political climate towards a pro-statehood perspective. Within the university space of UPR-RP, conflicts between students, mostly with independent perspectives, and groups with US–based associations (such as the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, ROTC) increased in the already hostile environment.

This strike and the work Huelga Estudiantil [Student Strike] represent a call to action, hope, and a reminder of how students successfully and extraordinarily organized.

I chose this artwork to encourage us as students to realize the power of organization in a university setting. The student spirit is more powerful than we credit it.

La Huelga Universitaria de 1973 ocurrió en la Universidad de Puerto Rico Recinto de Río Piedras (UPR-RP) por aproximadamente 44 días con el propósito de defender la democracia del sistema universitario. Esta huelga era solamente una de varias que tomó lugar en UPR-RP para demandar participación estudiantil sobre el nombramiento de presidentes universitarios.

Hubo varios elementos ambientales que contribuyeron a la organización y protesta estudiantil. Por ejemplo, un debate que ha existido desde la colonización de la tierra Borikén (nombre indígena Taíno) por España y los Estados Unidos, es la independencia de Puerto Rico. En 1968, la victoria del Partido Nuevo Progresista (PNP) representó un cambio fuerte en el clima política Puertoriqueño realizando una perspectiva estadista en control gubernamental. En el espacio universitario de UPR-RP, los conflictos entre estudiantes mayormente con perspectivas independientes y grupos con asociaciones estadounidenses (como Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, ROTC) aumentó en un ambiente hostil.

Esta huelga y la obra Huelga Estudiantil representa alerta, esperanza, y sirve como un recordatorio de cómo los estudiantes se organizaron extraordinariamente. Elegí esta obra para animar a nosotros como estudiantes para realizar el poder de organización en un espacio universitario. El espíritu estudiantil es más fuerte de lo que sabemos.

Mark di Suvero Old Glory

Mark di Suvero’s Old Glory is repainted every decade or so because it fades to orange from its usual red color. When it was installed in 1987, di Suvero explained that the sculpture is titled with the nickname for the US flag because the steel is painted red, the sky above is blue, and the clouds are white. If there are no clouds, you can substitute Hamilton Hall.

As chemists, we wondered what was causing the red paint on the steel to fade. In 2017, as our first step to find out, we collected surface reflectance spectra from different parts of the sculpture. The north and east faces were the most red, and the south and west faces were the most orange. Since the orange faces receive full sunlight, we suspected a photoinduced oxidation process.

To test our hypothesis, we collected some paint chips that had flaked off and a few drips of the new paint when it was repainted in 2022. What measurements do you think we’re going to make?

Vieja Gloria, de Mark di Suvero, se vuelve a pintar aproximadamente cada década porque su color rojo habitual se desvanece hasta volverse naranja. Cuando fue instalada en 1987, di Suvero explicó que tituló la escultura con el apodo de la bandera de los Estados Unidos porque el acero está pintado de rojo, el cielo sobre ella es azul y las nubes son blancas. Si no hay nubes, puedes sustituirlas por el edificio Hamilton Hall.

Como químicos, nos preguntamos qué causaba que la pintura roja del acero se decolorara. En 2017, como primer paso para averiguarlo, recopilamos espectros de reflectancia superficial de diferentes partes de la escultura. Las caras norte y este eran las más rojas, y las caras sur y oeste eran las más anaranjadas. Dado que las caras anaranjadas reciben la luz solar directa, sospechamos que se trataba de un proceso de oxidación fotoinducida.

Para comprobar nuestra hipótesis, recogimos algunas virutas de pintura que se habían desprendido y unas gotas de la nueva pintura cuando se repintó en 2022. ¿Qué mediciones crees que vamos a realizar?

Harold Edgerton Football Kick

This photograph, Football Kick, captures a pivotal moment in the game—one that every coach has experienced, whether in triumph or heartbreak. The kicker’s baggy, wrinkled gold pants and black high-top cleats evoke an earlier era of football, further emphasized by the straight-on toe-kicking style, a technique long abandoned. The deep impression in the ball conveys the sheer force of the kick, while the clenched fist reflects both the intensity of the moment and the kicker’s determination.

The darkened background and absence of a kicking tee or holder strip the scene of context, isolating the act itself in time. This frozen instant suggests not just a kick, but a memory—one of undeniable significance, preserved forever.

Harold Edgerton Milk Drop Coronet

Music is composed of waves like this work of art, Milk Drop Coronet. The sound waves come together to become something greater than the sum of their parts. This is reminiscent of the aural landscape on a Husker gameday.

The fans’ cheers, the kids’ excitement, and the band’s songs create a soundscape uniquely Nebraskan. In this image, we are frozen in time at the beginning of this milk ring’s life.

Like the sounds on football Saturday, the full impact hasn’t been reached and may not for years to come. Music has a way of living on and inspiring us. Music has the power to revive long-lost memories and teleport us to a different place and time. This photograph is a simple reminder that music creates a ripple effect on those around it, just as this milk drop will ripple through the pool of milk.

Nona Faustine In Praise of Famous Men No More

As an African American male, educator, and someone who studies diversity and race, this artwork compelled me to reflect deeply. The bold, red line extending across the center immediately captured my attention, not covering the entire image. I found myself asking, “What is being redlined?” I also thought about how this term is associated with discriminatory practices that create geographical boundaries and disadvantages communities of color.

Como hombre afroamericano, educador y estudioso de la diversidad y la raza, esta obra me llevó a una reflexión profunda.

I noticed a man on horseback and what appeared to be an African man walking beside him. While it appears the person is walking “freely,” I questioned, “Is he truly free? Why is he walking and not riding his own horse?” It became clearer that he was kept subordinate to the man on horseback.

Lorser Feitelson Black Lines on Red Field

When we respond to a painting we are usually reacting, at least initially, to a visual perception of color and geometry. The subject may be important, but it’s often secondary. To put it another way, a subject’s rendering on the canvas is more important than the subject itself. In our brain’s interaction with art, form and color come first. The mind-form/color interaction happens most often with the real world around us; the job of visual art is to intensify our experience of this interaction. It’s mysterious and mystical, and is the essence of consciousness. It’s as personal and varied as personality itself. All art, and especially abstract art, is a Rorschach test.

I sense in Lorser Feitelson’s Black Lines on Red Field a tentative exit through an opening door, from a malign space of red to an unknown Stygian blackness beyond. His painting provokes an uneasiness in my heart.

What do you see?

Helen Frankenthaler Red Frame

I appreciate that this painting was created by a highly influential artist who was a woman.

Not only that, but a woman whose male counterparts were known to embrace a particularly enthusiastic brand of, shall we say, machismo. This painting and its creator, Helen Frankenthaler, stand in their own power.

I also like how in-your-face this painting is about the essence of the medium—canvas and paint. Realistic paintings ask us to believe that the picture frame is a window frame through which we view a scene. We are asked to ignore the actual materials in front of us. Not here! This work’s materiality is its content. Splotches of paint in sections of otherwise raw canvas document the performance of paint being actively spread across, and merged with, the canvas to become one entity.

The scale of this painting also contributes to a sense that we are encountering another being, one with a mind of its own. The red frame adds dynamic color and contains the action. To me, though, it’s also a visual pun.

Carol Haerer Fire Flowers

In Fire Flowers, University of Nebraska alumna Carol Haerer (‘54) captures the quiet, radiant force of transformation. I was drawn to this artwork not only because of Haerer’s Nebraska connection, but also because of my love for paintings of flowers—even when they bloom only in the imagination, as they do here. I have several floral works in my home, and Fire Flowers immediately spoke to that part of me that finds joy and energy in nature’s beauty.

This painting feels as if it breathes, each brushstroke alive with movement, passion, and renewal. It speaks to the ways we are continually shaped by our experiences— for me, how motherhood, my career, and community involvement weave together, kindling new dreams and revealing new inner strengths. Like the blossoms Haerer imagined, we are called to rise, to change, and to flourish.

Haerer’s work is a beautiful reminder of the extraordinary creativity that blooms in our community and in each of us. It also reminds us that transformation is often quiet but powerful—a journey of becoming more fully and vibrantly ourselves.

Carmen Herrera Gemini

When I first saw Carmen Herrera’s Gemini, I immediately thought of the State of Nebraska’s motto, “Equality Before the Law.” I am pretty sure Ms. Herrera was not thinking of that motto, but I love the use of what appears to me to be an “equal” sign, although with odd angles and opposing slopes.

I like Herrera’s version better than a “normal” equal sign, a perfectly formed mirrored shape of two exactly similar rectangles. As a lawyer and law professor, the idea of “equality” resonates with me as an obvious goal of our system of laws. Yet, this concept has been quite contested throughout American legal history and can take different meanings depending on the era and one’s perspective.

Does the Constitution require only “separate but equal” facilities for races (Plessy v.

Ferguson, 1896) or does separate mean “inherently unequal” (Brown v. Board of Educ., 1954)? Does equality mean treating everyone the same, or does it mean, as my colleague Steve Willborn has written (alluding to Aristotle), we should treat “people differently to try to account for different circumstances and permit more equal and fair outcomes”?

We continue these conversations today in often heated exchanges, coming at each other red-faced and from opposing perspectives, arguing for the same goal but convinced that our way of realizing it is the correct one. This, of course, brings me back to Gemini—maybe the artist was thinking of our motto after all?

Cuando vi por primera vez Gemini, de Carmen Herrera, pensé inmediatamente en el lema del Estado de Nebraska: “Igualdad ante la ley”. George Herriman Krazy Kat

I’m a fan of George Herriman and I have taught his work in graduate classes on the literatures of the American Southwest.

Though not native of Arizona, Herriman spent much time among the vivid red mesas and buttes of Monument Valley. The three protagonists in his comic strip Krazy Kat (1913–44) operate in an odd triangle in which Ignatz the Mouse continually pelts Krazy Kat with house bricks, which Krazy Kat interprets as a gesture of love.

Meanwhile Offissa Bull Pupp seeks to stem the flow of blood—both real and imaginary—by intervening in his sentimental way. In this watercolor Krazy Kat, Ignatz the Mouse, and Offissa Bull Pupp can be seen staring in bewilderment at the toothlike rock structure that has appeared in the Southwestern desert.

The inscription suggests the rock has been placed there by some cosmic force for reasons unclear—though the appearance of the tooth is partly an in-joke at the expense of a local dentist. In the foreground is what looks like a Navajo bowl containing a cactus. Herriman’s cartoon strips, from which the painting derives, were full of liminal and enigmatic ideas and references to Indigenous culture, opening space for Krazy’s indeterminate gender, Herriman’s own nonwhite identification, and for reflection on the lives of the marginalized Native American peoples of the region.

Felrath Hines Red Sea

Felrath Hines’s Red Sea captivates with its bold, geometric composition—a striking interplay of color and form that evokes both movement and depth. As mayor, I see art as a powerful connector weaving together history, place, and community. Red Sea has taken on new life in Lincoln, not only as part of Sheldon Museum of Art’s distinguished collection, but also as an inspiring public artwork on the basketball courts at South Antelope Park.

Through the partnership between Public Art Lincoln and Project Backboard, Red Sea extends beyond the museum walls, transforming a space of recreation into one of creativity and connection. The mural invites young athletes, neighbors, and visitors to engage with art in an unexpected setting—reminding us that art has the power to enliven every corner of our city.

This blending of art and public space reflects the spirit of Hines’s work. As a pioneering artist of geometric abstraction, his paintings explore structure, movement, and harmony—qualities that now animate the courts where Red Sea lives. I am honored to celebrate this work and the ways in which Lincoln continues to champion art as an essential part of public life.

Edward Hopper Room in New York

The newspaper. The piano. The solitude.

Those three features draw us into Edward Hopper’s brilliant Room in New York. We grew up a world away from Hopper’s remarkable city scenes, but he still stirs a deep connection within us unlike most any other American painter.

Growing up on a Nebraska farm, it was a daily newspaper and a piano that offered an early glimpse of the wider world awaiting us. Our parents nurtured both of our fascinations— Jeff’s early obsession with journalism and world events, Mike’s instinctive musical talents—that would ultimately provide a guide for much of our lives.

This painting evokes a simpler time that we often long for—no electronics, no phones, no distractions—but an abundance of solitude that we enjoyed as we came of age at the end of the 20th century, the beginning and middle of which Hopper chronicled so masterfully.

His impressions carry a familiar feel, perhaps back to our own living room, where our dad was often reading the newspaper, while our mom was playing the piano. Those were the distinct soundtracks of our lives—a world away from Manhattan, yet so recognizable in our shared America.

Jeff Koons Balloon Dog

What’s not to like about Jeff Koons’s Balloon Dog? It looks like a balloon twisted into the shape of a dog, and it’s red and shiny! It’s such a fun work that it’s hard not to smile when you see it. I want to touch it. I want to squeeze it. I expect it to come alive and jump off the plate and give squeaky little barks—like something out of an animated movie.

¿Cómo no te va a gustar el Perro Globo de Jeff Koons? Parece un globo torcido con forma de perro, ¡y es rojo y brillante! Es una obra tan divertida que es difícil no sonreír al verla. Quiero tocarlo. Quiero apretarlo.

But there is more to this sculpture. The balloon dog is mounted on another very shiny surface that reflects and distorts the balloon dog. From the right angle, it seems to bleed red (Go Big Red?). Fun, shiny, but maybe too reflective for its own good?

As a dog lover (and scientist), I enjoy seeing dogs in art. It reminds me of the unique role these animals play in our lives. Sometimes we look to art for deep meaning and contemplation. Sometimes we look for joy.

Niho Kozuru Transplanted

“Moving or transporting something to another place, typically with some sort of upheaval” is how the Oxford Dictionary defines “transplant.” Niho Kozuru’s sculpture, Transplanted, resembles organic shapes growing upward, toward the light. The shapes appear to be moving and reaching for higher ground, similar to the sea of red balloons released after the first touchdown of a Husker football game. The color red dominates the sculpture and resonates deeply with the University of Nebraska’s identity. It symbolizes energy, passion, and strength. Kozuru’s work might be interpreted as the university’s role in generating and nurturing knowledge and the energy that is created ln the process.

Walt Kuhn Apples in Wooden Boat

Apples in Wooden Boat takes me to my childhood, climbing apple trees and eating fresh apples right off the trees. They were sweet, juicy, red, and delicious. Our ponies loved to eat the apples that fell to the ground, and we played under the canopy of leaves all summer. Near my childhood home in Nebraska City are apple trees and an orchard that still produces apples. Just as looking at this painting conjures up memories from childhood, it also speaks to the future and all the wonderful things the University of Nebraska represents. When we say “Go Big Red,” we’re not just talking about sports. We are talking about the university as a whole and its outreach across the entire state to promote education, conservation, planting, and harvesting. This is Nebraska at its finest.

Jacob Lawrence Paper Boats

On the surface, this painting is of men collaboratively working together to make and sail paper boats. Looking deeper, we think of the experiences of African American student athletes in the early days of Nebraska, trying to make it. In our reading of the work, the boats—each one different, but all similar in construction—represent the students’ individual stories, dreams, hopes, and pathways to Nebraska.

As a basketball player at Nebraska in the late 1950s and early 1960s, I [Albert] was one of very few Black students on campus. My teammates and I needed each other. We faced isolation, hateful stares, and discriminatory practices in finding jobs and apartments. In the spirit of cooperation, we developed plans for success. Through our collective drive, hard work, and faith in God, we confronted every obstacle and roadblock whether on the court or field or in the classroom. Our stories include those achievements.

We came to Nebraska to play basketball or football and left as architects, artists, engineers, teachers, and lawyers. Graduation was the road to success, setting the path for others—including our children and grandchildren—to come after us.

Great, Bodacious, Road—Go Big Red!

Oliver: I was initially drawn in by the colors and lines. Then, as I looked more closely, I could see various patterns and forms emerge.

It felt like a transformative visual experience.

Campbell: It looks like the artist started this work by drawing precise circles. Then as she expanded outward, the lines and shapes became more organic and imperfect.

Mimi: I see the imperfections, too, and for me, that feels human. The work is hand-drawn; it’s not uniform or algorithmically generated.

Kody: I agree. The imperfections from the artist’s hand are what make this interesting and beautiful.

Sydney: Because the work is abstract, untitled, and has organic qualities, it makes me think of various elements of nature— from rippled sand to blowing wind to flowing water.

Campbell: There’s a sense of calming movement.

Georgia O’Keeffe Red Splashes with Line

Known as the “Mother of American modernism,” Georgia O’Keeffe has always inspired me, especially her work on colorful motifs reflecting her love of the American Southwest. I have found thoughtful beauty in her many different artistic expressions.

Red Splashes with Line is one of O’Keeffe’s more abstract works. The paint, seemingly applied in a haphazard manner offers much more the longer you view it. Sharp contrasts around the edges where medium meets paper create interesting boundaries. Color variation within the painting hints at depth and shallowness. Variation that gives life to our oceans, landscapes, and our thoughts and emotions.

I bring my structured analysis students to Sheldon to reflect on its wonderful collection of fine art. Using a methodology created by Amy Herman called “The Art of Perception,” I can use the space created by abstract and modern art to get students to explore the most fundamental of questions: Why? What do you see in this work? What emotions does it evoke? Explore your reaction. Ask yourself why it makes you feel that way. Take your time. You will learn something new.

Bill Reid The Legacy: Raven

The Trickster figure is a potent force in many tribal cultures. Whether incarnated as Coyote or Rabbit or Spider-man, it embodies humankind’s uncanny animality, that vital instinctual force that is forever poking holes in society’s static conventions, its comfortable modes of civilized rule and order. Inhabiting a conceptual realm somewhere between Carl Jung’s Shadow and Mikhail Bakhtin’s Carnival, the Trickster can be read as the human psyche’s primal drive towards both chaos and revolution, towards both thanatos and eros, towards both destruction and new birth.

As a scholar of birds, I have long been delighted by the fact that the Trickster among Pacific Northwest tribal peoples is often a corvid—specifically, a raven or a blue jay. Bill Reid’s The Legacy: Raven presents a stylized raven, intentionally patterned after traditional Coast Salish art.

I imagine the bird performing her crazy role as Trickster, simultaneously partaking in a ceremonial dance and strutting her laughing way towards standing civilization on its head.

Norman Rockwell The County Agricultural Agent

It’s odd and fascinating how an artwork can instantly transport you to a specific moment in the past. The County Agricultural Agent invokes vivid recollections of my upbringing on a modest farm north of small-town Morrill, Nebraska.

Norman Rockwell’s idyllic representation of classic Americana and midwestern farm life in the springtime floods me with memories, like the pleasant fragrance of my grandma’s lilac bushes on the south side of the farmhouse and the dry and grainy taste of dirt in my mouth from digging irrigation ditches before water was allocated from the canal to sustain and grow the corn, beans, beets, and alfalfa fields.

This artwork does more than permit me the pleasure of reminiscing. It connects my two selves: it bridges my fond childhood memories and my current treasured professional identity as a Husker.

The barn is a bright, burning hue of red— emblematic of the University of Nebraska and its intertwined identity with the state and agriculture. Nebraska Extension educators and agents are represented as they fulfill the university’s land grant mission by engaging 144,000 Nebraska youth in the 4-H program annually. Nebraskans go big and bet on themselves, a byproduct of the tenacious midwestern work ethic depicted in this painting.

Analia Saban International Ladies Garment Workers Union, Made in USA, Clothing Tag

This artwork makes me think about a song I heard in the 1970s promoting the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union: “Look for the union label when you are buying that shirt, dress, or blouse.”

Being a longtime labor union member myself, the song sparks joy in my heart. As a social scientist, though, I consider the song from other perspectives. It was part of a flashy television commercial that was intentionally multicultural and gender inclusive. Was it a reflection of our society?

Growing up in the South in the 1970s, I remember watching my mother and her female friends pile into cars early in the morning to head off to Brownsville or Scottsville, Kentucky, to sew in garment factories. They often worked from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. for minimum wage to bring in a little extra money for the family. I wonder how culturally diverse and safe their working environments were, and how likely they were to be members of a union.

Analia Saban’s work causes me to think, to reflect, to feel, to hope.

Esta obra me hace pensar en una canción que escuché en la década de 1970 para promocionar el Sindicato Internacional de Trabajadoras de la Confección: “Busca la etiqueta del sindicato cuando compres esa camisa, ese vestido o esa blusa”.

Hadieh Shafie Cadmium Yellow, Naphthol Red and Ultramarine Blue in 1/1

Upon first seeing a picture of this artwork, the colors and shapes instantly reminded me of the Aboriginal art I’ve come to love, specifically the dot paintings from our twelve years living in Australia. The artist Hadieh Shafie is Iranian American, but I thought the red center of Australia, from which Aboriginal artists traditionally create red pigments, and the Iranian deserts might have similar colors. However, seeing the art in person evoked a completely different reaction. The colors still pop out at me, but in a different way. Seeing the work in person made me realize there is much more depth to it. From the side, you can see the writing on the scrolls; from the front, the vibrant colors are mesmerizing. The work is incredibly complex, making me wonder how the artist could assemble such a stunningly beautiful and intricate piece.

Al ver por primera vez una imagen de esta obra, los colores y las formas me recordaron instantáneamente al arte aborigen que llegué a amar durante los doce años que vivimos en Australia, en particular a las pinturas de puntos. Charles Sheeler Barn Reds

The red of the barn walls and creamy white of the concrete trough, ground, and architectural trim remind me of our University of Nebraska’s scarlet red and cream.

Charles Sheeler’s incredible Barn Reds also makes me think of cowboys and the impact they have on my life.

For me, being a cowboy holds a great deal of personal meaning because a cowboy is someone who respects the western way of life and is grateful for all the blessings they embrace. A cowboy represents not only a way of life, but a strong connection to traditions and values.

At its core, being a cowboy typically involves more than just working with cattle or riding horses; it’s a lifestyle rooted in the deep and loving connection to land and animals, a sense of independence, and a commitment to hard work, integrity, and responsibility.

Being a cowboy is more than just a job, it’s a mindset; a way of life that encompasses a sense of pride in one’s heritage and finding creative, yet efficient ways to work through hardships.

Leon Polk Smith Red-Violet Diamond

This bright and bold painting by Leon Polk Smith initially drew my attention due to its geometric sharpness and jewel-toned colors. Looking more closely, I began to consider how challenged our understanding is regarding the incompleteness of what we “know” vs. the possibilities and potentialities of the world around us.

At first glance, I saw a purple square framed in red—but is that true? On looking again, I noticed the purple square is not fully visible—its corners are cut off. Am I seeing only a small part of a much larger whole, as though I am looking through a kaleidoscope?

As someone committed to the impact of global education and intercultural learning, this painting could serve as a metaphor.

Much like Red-Violet Diamond, a complete picture and understanding of the world is often beyond our reach, urging us to reflect on the sometimes-obscured aspects of life, culture, experience, and the world around us.

Just as we might initially reduce a culture to a single facet, like a color or symbol, this painting suggests there is more depth and complexity hidden beneath what is immediately visible.

Esta brillante y audaz pintura de Leon Polk Smith me llamó la atención inicialmente por su nitidez geométrica y sus colores brillantes.

Al observarla más de cerca, comencé a pensar en lo limitado que es nuestro conocimiento en comparación con las posibilidades y potencialidades del mundo que nos rodea.

A primera vista, vi un cuadrado morado enmarcado en rojo, pero ¿es eso cierto?

Andy Warhol Vegetarian Vegetable (The Alphabet Soup)

For me, Andy Warhol’s Vegetarian Vegetable (The Alphabet Soup) invokes nostalgia, not only through its use of primary colors but also through its familiar subject matter. One of the first things taught in formal education is the alphabet—the building blocks of our lives. A bowl of alphabet soup encourages us to be youthful and playfully curious, spelling out words with the letters floating on our spoon.

Warhol’s soup can makes me think of sitting in my childhood kitchen after school with a big bowl of soup and grilled cheese, or of being on a faraway journey and eating the best bowl of soup ever.

The phrase “Go Big Red” invokes a similar sense of nostalgia. I think of watching Husker football games with family, wandering across campus, or being lost in thought during a lecture.

Para mí, Verdura Vegetariana (La Sopa de Letras) de Andy Warhol me evoca nostalgia, no solo por el uso de colores primarios, sino también por su tema familiar. Una de las primeras cosas que se enseñan en la educación formal es el alfabeto, los pilares de nuestras vidas. Un plato de sopa de letras nos anima a ser jóvenes y curiosos, deletreando palabras con las letras que flotan en nuestra cuchara. Stanley Whitney Red

Curiously, in a painting entitled Red, more of the rectangles and borders are orange than any other color. Yet, it’s the azure tile in the second row from the top that captures our attention. It refuses to stand in line, abreast with and equal to the others. There are other blue tiles. Just beneath the forward-stepping one is an unassuming midnight blue tile standing flush with the others. Beneath that in the bottom row, is one in a brighter shade of azure. It also refuses to conform.

Why did Stanley Whitney call this painting Red when it’s the blues that are so captivating? Was it so we’d consider how the placement of the red amongst the oranges, blues, yellows, lavenders, green, white, and black affects our experience of that color? Or so we’d consider how the scarcity of red makes us welcome that color where it does appear? But Whitney offers another explanation: “The difficulty for me in making these paintings is, if you fall in love with this red, can you get out of that red so that everything equals out and there’s no beginning or no end to it all?” That single color had so captivated Whitney that for him, there was no other.

Ese único color había cautivado tanto a Whitney que, para él, no existía ningún otro.
