Shelby Farms Park Conservancy FY22 Annual Report

Page 1

Dear Friend,

Access to vibrant public spaces is as vital as ever, and thanks to the hard work of our sta and the generous support of partners, donors and volunteers like you, Shelby Farms Park and the Greenline are celebrating another year of successfully connecting all of us to nature and to one another.

We have been fortunate to see the return of in-person events of all sizes this year, as we welcomed back athletes from around the world for the St. Jude IRONMAN 70.3 and celebrated the restoration of our summer camp program where kids from our community learn about the special park that belongs to them. Nothing makes me prouder than to be a part of the e ort that makes Shelby Farms Park such a special and celebrated part of our community. Every time I see visitors making memories in the Park, I am reminded of the generosity and community that makes it all possible.

Looking back on the past year, I am grateful and also hopeful for what the future holds. Over the last year we have formed new partnerships, engaged new donors, welcomed new and returning visitors, and together, we have continued to shape Shelby Farms Park for the better.

Over the past fiscal year, Shelby Farms Park Conservancy continued on our path to growing and sustaining our financial position. This report outlines our balanced financials, and a list of some of our most impactful supporters. I hope you will join me in celebrating the park and the people that make it all possible.

With gratitude,

WHO WE ARE

Shelby Farms Park Conservancy (SFPC) is the 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that manages and operates Shelby Farms Park and Shelby Farms Greenline through a private-public partnership with Shelby County Government. That means the land that comprises Shelby Farms Park and Greenline is publicly owned, and SFPC is responsible for daily management, fundraising to meet our operational budget needs, setting the vision for the Park’s future and stewarding its natural resources.

With the support of our volunteers, donors and partners, we are fulfilling our vision and mission! Each year, SFPC privately raises funding for the Park and the Greenline through earned revenue, general donations, corporate giving and foundation support. If you believe in this mission and want to give back to the park you love, visit shelbyfarmspark.org/give-now.

Shelby Farms Park Conservancy is committed to providing inclusive and equitable access for each and every visitor.
We are giving rise to a celebrated 21st century park that defines and shapes a great city.

Run (and bike and swim) the Park Shelby Farms Park Conservancy manages and operates 40+ miles of trails, making Shelby Farms Park the ideal location for 5K runs, cross country meets and triathlons. In fact, IRONMAN o cials described Shelby Farms Park as “Disneyland for triathletes”! rented Park venues for gatherings of all kinds, including family reunions, meetings, baby showers, weddings, birthday parties and festivals. Hundreds of volunteers supported Park operations by: • engaging and assisting visitors at the front desk • spreading mulch • wrangling weeds • picking up litter, limbs, debris • painting picnic tables • supporting special events by parking cars, directing tra c, handing out water, packet pick up • and more! 30 campers from under-resourced schools had their registration and lunch costs covered by a generous grant from the Shelby County Mayor’s O ce of Education.

We continued to cautiously budget for lower revenues in FY22, as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic at the start of the fiscal year. Revenues rebounded faster than expected, with the majority of increases in facility rentals as the pandemic abated and people started holding in-person events again. The increase in revenue also included loan forgiveness through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) which was part of the federal government's pandemic emergency spending. In consultation with our board of directors, some of this surplus was spent on needed park improvement projects, such as new safety surfaces in the Woodland Discovery Playground.
