ON THE COVER

While Ellie and Daniell both grew up in Vestavia Hills, they did not meet until after graduating college. It took them both serving with local non-profit Smile-A-Mile to connect.

II was no more than 6, when my posse of American Girl dolls lined the corridor in my grandfather’s home, decked out in toilet paper streamers. Dear Robert, my cousin, best man, officiant, florist and wedding planner, wore every hat in the industry, including the badge of security.

I quickly chose an old Easter dress and a somewhat white pillowslip for my gown and veil before fashioning together a bouquet of dandelions. Suddenly, I was behind that closed door–the one that would open into “my forever” with Prince Charming. Balling on a budget, I improvised “The Wedding March,” humming, “ba-da, dadum,” right before processing down the hallway.

This was it. This was my moment. Then, my father so rudely interrupted the happiest moment of my life by tripping over some guests. My life? In shambles. My wedding? The laughing stock of the century. My security guard? Apparently on break.

My poor father unsuccessfully attempted to console his elementary bridezilla, promising anything from ice cream to even providing the music for my real wedding one day. Curiously, I blinked my eyes and nearly 20 years had passed.

This time, however, I stood gazing at the ornately carved French doors just seconds from giving way into the congregation. The only problem was my father wasn’t there. I couldn’t even tell him how much I missed him.

Just as beads of sweat started to drizzle down my furrowed brow, I felt a soft embrace on my shoulder–Robert, like the gentleman he was, offered his affections, telling me my dad loved me and would be here in spirit.

Truthfully, the events that followed are a bit of a merry blur. Robert walked me down the aisle, giving me away in place of my father. We all laughed and danced, and at the reception, I looked over at the band and realized Robert was right.

Every single musician performing was a longtime friend of my father. They all took time out of their schedules, and some drove for hours just to play at my wedding. Because of them, my father fulfilled his promise to me from all those years ago. They even had a guitar adorned with my father’s face on display.

It was at this moment I learned that only in fairytales do weddings go as planned. However, weddings were never supposed to be about perfection, were they? In this issue, you all will read about 10 Vestavia Hills weddings. Each couple’s story is proof that love is enough, and the best weddings are the ones that hold space for those we hold dear.

” “THE QUESTION

What is the best piece of marriage advice you

have ever received?

See the good in each other!

-Anna Holt

Marriage is like a threelegged stool–it consists of you, your spouse and God.

-Jessica Compton Chisenhall

If you follow the “don’t go to bed mad” advice, both of you will be tired and irritable in the morning. Let the ire settle. Revisit the issue when you aren’t tired or triggered.

-Melissa Garrard Sanders

Do not talk bad about your spouse to others. You may forgive them, but the other person who is not involved will always hold a grudge against your spouse.

-Jordan Dacus

Every argument begins with an unmet expectation of some kind.

-Hannah Landry

Sometimes, go to bed angry. Sometimes, you need a nap and a snack, and like a toddler, you will come back to the discussion as your best self.

-Sally Justice

Laughter and patience is the best medicine. Be a listener!

-Liz Guest

After almost 56 years of marriage, we have learned that no matter what problems the two of us have, nothing goes beyond being open, trusting each other explicitly.

ARTS CULTURE&

HOMETOWN TALENT

Vestavia Hills native and rising actress Nicole Lamb pays tribute to her roots.

PHOTOS BY MATTHEW MURPHY & CONTRIBUTED

WWith every note sung, actress Nicole Lamb possesses the innate ability to captivate the attention of those eagerly watching as she vividly performs the story of those whose voices deserve to be told, and she believes every character has a story to tell.

A native of Vestavia Hills, Nicole grew up dancing at the Jackie O’Neal School of Dance from the time she was just 3 years old. Jackie, Tammy Towns and Nealy Towns Alonso, she says, helped her develop a passion for the arts.

Then at age 9, Nicole auditioned for her first-ever theatre production with Red Mountain Theatre Company. Keith Cromwell, who serves as RMTC’s Director of Institutional Advancement, was holding auditions for the musical, “Annie.”

She went on to book the role of Molly, completely surprising her family due to her lack of experience.

“I loved it so, so much, and I still do,” Nicole says. “I’m much older than that now, but I still have that same passion and love for it. When things do get hard because life is hard, touring is hard, being an adult is hard–I always go back to that feeling of I truly know that this is what I was meant to do. I have that same childlike love for it that I did when I was 9 years old.”

With an insatiable itch to create, Nicole continued singing, dancing and acting, developing her mantra as a “triple threat.” She joined the girl’s choir at Pizitz Middle School and the Rebelettes’ dance team at Vestavia Hills High School.

She also booked lead roles in numerous RMTC productions such as Olive Ostrovsky in “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” and Jo March in “Little Women.”

“He definitely trained me and brought in incredible guest artists from New York and all over,” Nicole says of Keith. “That really was such a foundation to get to work with professionals at such a young age. It helped my work ethic that I have now.”

In her earlier roles, Nicole says she was prioritized more for her dancing abilities. She later began working with The Amy Murphy Studio in Mountain Brook and found not only one of the best teachers of her life, but also a wonderful friend in Amy.

“She is very much in my corner and is always rooting for me,” Nicole says, smiling.

During her senior year when she played Jo, Nicole says singing “Astonishing” on stage for the first time made her realize she wanted to pursue

acting full-time. She even missed her senior prom just so she could play the role.

“That show was such a dream,” Nicole says, later adding, “the girls who played my sisters the night of my prom brought a tiara backstage for me to have a prom moment and be prom queen, which I thought was really sweet.”

After graduating in 2013, Nicole attended Elon University, studying musical theater; yet, after a year, she realized this was not the path for her. Instead, she packed her bags and ventured to the Big Apple, eager to pay her dues as an aspiring actress.

She spent several years in New York booking small roles before the pandemic brought the arts to a temporary halt. She found herself back in Birmingham and got connected with Meg Deusner of Acting Out Academy in Vestavia Hills.

Nicole says Meg helped her film every audition tape, cheering her on between each take. Meg also helped her transition from musical theater to TV and film, enabling her to book several commercials and even small roles in shows such as “Legacies” and “The First Lady.”

“One of my best, best, best memories is I had one line–actually, it was a paragraph–in a showtime

show with Viola Davis that got completely cut from the show,” Nicole says, chuckling. “So, I look like an extra in it, but I did have lines. But that was the best day of my entire life because I got to watch Viola Davis work.”

Nicole says as talented as Viola is, she is far more gracious and thankful for those around her. This project taught her the importance of humility–something she strives to have even playing lead roles on stage.

Not long after did Nicole’s breakout role come calling–lead Katherine Howard in “SIX” on the Norwegian Bliss. The 80-minute-long musical has only six roles, who happen to portray the six wives of King Henry VIII.

Katherine, the fifth wife and arguably the one with the most tragic life, has a seven-and-a-halfminute-long solo, detailing how she was sexually exploited by men throughout her lifetime. Nicole says she enjoyed bringing justice to Katherine’s memory on stage.

“What I like about ‘SIX’ is each of the queens get to speak for themselves; whereas, in history, we’ve kind of been taught these ideas about them,” she

Then, Nicole accomplished another childhood

dream: touring with “Aladdin.” In the show, Nicole was a swing and covered all of the female ensemble tracks as well as Princess Jasmine.

She says this production was both the largest and most difficult of her career thus far; yet, it was nonetheless rewarding.

“That was a huge learning curve for me because you have to rewire your brain of how you learn choreography and staging and blocking,” she says.

The American Theatre Guild hosted “Aladdin,” whose touring company performed at the BJCC Concert Hall in Birmingham from Jan. 24-28, 2024, and for the first time ever, Nicole made her debut as Jasmine. Performing live, she says she had to fight back tears as she could not believe this was real life.

She had performed at the BJCC for dance competitions and had also attended many musicals,

plays and concerts there in her youth.

“I will never forget that feeling of being in the air, essentially looking over at everybody and singing ‘A Whole New World’ in Birmingham,” Nicole says. “That was my moment for sure.”

Since touring with “Aladdin,” Nicole has booked the role of Margaret and is an understudy for Anne Hathaway in “& Juliet.” She is excited as this is one of the first times she is playing an adult woman, having played mostly children or teenagers in her youth.

“I’m challenging myself in 2025 to be open to new opportunities,” Nicole says, later adding, “I’m challenging myself to be really present and grateful for the job and the amazing show that I’m in right now.”

To all of her friends and family back home, Nicole says, “Thank you.” Truly, it takes a village to raise a child, and now because of her support system, she is living her dream, performing live nearly every night.

“I literally could not have done any of this without my parents and without my sisters,” she says. “They still cheer me on and are rooting for me.”

UKRAINIAN REFUGEES’ TESTIMONY IS LIVING PROOF OF THE GOODNESS OF GOD.

BY ANNA GRACE MOORE PHOTOS BY BLAIR RAMSEY

WWailing like a fearmongering spirit, the air raid sirens ricochet off every building, barreling down every street in Lviv, Ukraine. Mykola and Olena Vyshyvanyuk awake with a start to that crescendoing dagger in their ears.

It had only been hours since the last raid. The missile strikes were getting closer.

Their feet hit the floor in half a second. Having already been dressed for the dead of winter, they race down the hall, waking their three daughters.

All of the windows in their apartment are open. Though the temperatures have dropped below freezing, they risk frostbite over not hearing the sirens.

Their children cry as they hurriedly pull on their boots, tumbling out the door. Two minutes tick away mockingly as the family thunders down the narrow stairwell to their apartment’s underground parking lot.

After that, what happens next is in God’s hands.

The blasts shake surrounding buildings to their foundations. Walls crumble down around them.

With only blankets in their hands, the family huddles in a cold, damp corner of the lot, quivering as Olena prays for a veil of protection over the city. Mykola wraps his arms as far as they can stretch around his family.

He tries to shield his daughters’ ears from the shrieks of citizens outside. Many are trapped from falling debris.

Full of fear with an ounce of faith, he whispers, “God, please save my family.”

FAITHFUL PROVISIONS

Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022. The air raids first targeted airports all throughout the country in an attempt to prevent a mass exodus.

Before the war, Lviv’s population hovered over 700,000. In three days, the population grew to 2 million as thousands sought refuge in the city.

“When they were at home, I could not sleep,” Olena says of their daughters. “I was so afraid.”

The Vyshyvanyuks waited three days before splitting up their daughters–then ages 13, 11 and 6–to live with their grandparents in Europe. Six long,

agonizing months passed before the whole family was reunited in Lviv.

During that time, Mykola and Olena opened their doors, sheltering evacuees.

According to americanimmigrationcouncil.org, in the article, “An Overview of the ‘Uniting for Ukraine’ Program,” former President Joe Biden launched the Uniting for Ukraine program on April 21, 2022. Its purpose was to allow Ukrainian refugees to seek asylum in the United States for up to two years.

Thanks to this program, Olena and Mykola brought their daughters home to Lviv, and with only one small suitcase each, they ventured to the U.S.

The Vyshyvanyuks arrived in the States on Nov. 7, 2022.

Through Uniting for Ukraine, they were connected with Vestavia Hills residents Ed and Natalie Cotter, who sponsored them and helped them get a home and a car upon their arrival. Natalie is a pediatrician and assisted the family with the girls’ immunizations.

Several community members took the family to each of the girls’ schools, helping them to get enrolled. Vestavia Hills Methodist Church, which is both the Cotters’ home church and now the Vyshyvanyuks’ church, raised money for the family, paying their rent for the first months they lived in the city.

Vestavia Hills Elementary East blessed the children with presents during their first Christmas in Birmingham.

“We’re so grateful for them,” Olena says, tearfully. Although life was not without its trials, Mykola and Olena’s faith grew bit by bit.

THE AMERICAN DREAM

While they grew up not far from each other, it took Mykola and Olena both moving to Athens, Greece, to meet. Their paths first crossed in 2003, when Mykola was working in the clothing industry.

A graduate of Veloudakis College of Art and Fashion, Mykola worked for 11 years as an assistant designer and pattern maker for Maurizio–a highend, Italian clothier. He and Olena tied the knot and welcomed their two oldest children, Eva, 15, and Ioanna, 13, into the world before returning home to Lviv.

In 2013, they founded NiEl Bridal Atelier. The name, NiEl, is a combination of their Greek names.

Not long after were they blessed with their youngest, Viktoriia, 8. Business grew steadily for several years until the start of the war.

“It was a very small shop, but it was our shop,” Mykola says with pride.

After living in the U.S. for several months, Mykola says he wanted to reopen the atelier and get back to

designing. He was introduced to Robert Emerick of REV Birmingham–a local nonprofit providing economic development assistance.

“We came to them and showed them our dresses,” Olena says. “He was thinking for 10 minutes, probably–nothing. We were like, ‘We’re done!’ And then, he said, ‘I think you can do it.’”

Navigating starting their own business, the family worked with REV Birmingham every step of the way.

“They connected us with the right people,” Olena says, later adding, “it wasn’t easy. It took us like half a year because, you know, to rent the shop was a problem because we didn’t have credit history.”

Mykola credits Jack Little of Red Rock Realty Group for helping them lease a space in Forest Park. Their bespoke shop now has floor-to-ceiling windows–perfect for showcasing dresses.

They began leasing the space in October 2023, meaning they had to create all new dresses from scratch to feature in their grand opening the following month. They worked day and night for weeks on end, and finally, on Nov. 5, 2023, NiEl Bridal Atelier opened its doors for the first time in Birmingham.

The best part? The shop opened nearly one year to the day after they arrived in the U.S.

NIEL BRIDAL ATELIER

Family-owned and operated, NiEl Bridal Atelier specializes in custom-made gowns for brides, mothers-of-the-bride, flower girls, christenings and first communions. Mykola designs and creates the dresses, while Olena handles day-to-day operations and even hand-stitches some appliqués.

While the shop does carry ready-to-wear gowns, it prioritizes its bridal collections, which consist of about five-to-10 dresses each. The atelier offers alteration services, too.

To start the design process, Mykola sketches out his idea, doodling different bodices and patterns from dramatic flair to timeless elegance. If a bride can dream it, he can design it.

Sourcing the finest fabrics–some as far as Barcelona, Spain–Mykola will create different wedding dresses based on popular trends or by request. While it takes about six months to create a custom gown, Mykola received a customer at his Birmingham store who needed a wedding dress in 30 days.

He not only accepted the daunting task, but he also clocked nearly 10 hours a day for a month to

create this exquisite gown.

“I love every dress,” he says. “I love working with clients.”

To him, every order is a fulfilled promise, proving God’s faithfulness.

FOCUS FORWARD

Two years after arriving in the U.S., the Vyshyvanyuks are thriving. NiEl Bridal Atelier has become renowned for its bespoke designs and is now carrying fabrics from the Première Vision Show. Olena is working as a case manager, assisting Ukrainians who have been displaced by the war.

None of this, they say, would have been possible without the generosity of the Vestavia Hills community. It was no mistake the Lord led them here.

As their story incites waves of miracles across the world, they encourage others to hold steadfast in their faith. After all, ounces of faith are still powerful enough to conquer oceans of fear.

NiEl Bridal Atelier is located at 701 37th Street South, #4, in Birmingham. It is open MondaySaturday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. For more information, visit nielbridalatelier.com.

TRIED & TRUE

Saying, “I do?”

Bromberg’s Diamond Buyer Brian Hood offers his guidance on choosing the right rings for you.

Photos by Elizabeth Black Photography & Blair Ramsey

THE RIGHT CHOICE

Discussing getting engaged? Fabulous! Engagement rings have long been a symbol of love and unity, announcing to all your commitment for the long haul. Be sure to follow these steps as you and your beloved navigate this exciting, new journey:

1. Set a Budget

Determine a comfortable budget before you start shopping. This will help narrow down options.

2. Research and Educate Yourself

Learn about different types of stones, cuts, settings and band materials. Understanding the 4Cs of diamonds (cut, clarity, color and carat weight) can help you make informed decisions.

3. Choose the Right Metal

Consider different metal options, such as white gold, yellow gold, rose gold or platinum. Each metal has its own look and durability, so choose one that suits your lifestyle.

THE BROMBERG’S BRIDE

John and Amanda Bullen chose Bromberg’s for their forever rings. Amanda’s engagement ring is a solitaire oval diamond set in an 18-karat yellow gold mounting with pavé diamonds. As per her family’s tradition, Amanda wore her engagement ring on her right hand and switched it over to her left hand after the wedding ceremony.

TAKE YOUR SIDE ON TRADITION

Once you nail down your budget and have a general idea of your dream ring, start thinking about which style—timeless or trendy—you envision it to be. Here are a few things to consider:

Timeless Rings

Often associated with class and elegance, these style rings usually consist of the following:

SOLITAIRE RINGS: These feature a single diamond or gemstone set on a simple band. They are classic and will never go out of style.

TIFFANY SETTING: A variation of the solitaire, this setting lifts the diamond to maximize sparkle. This type setting usually has a thinner band to maximize the

presentation of the diamond.

ROUND BRILLIANT CUT: Known for its exceptional sparkle, this cut is a perennial favorite.

THREE-STONE RINGS: Symbolizing the past, present and future, these rings offer a classic look with sentimental meaning.

EXCEPTIONAL, NOT OPTIONAL

If your dream ring’s price is a little too steep, Brian recommends these alternatives, in order to prioritize quality:

MINIMALIST SETTINGS: Lower cost on the setting will maximize the budget for the center stone. The setting can always be enhanced or changed at a later date such as for a future anniversary gift.

HIGHER COLOR: At times to fit a customer’s budget, diamond experts will sacrifice color to hit a certain budget.

By focusing on Exceptional-cut grades, you can alter the appearance of color as much as two-color grades.

FOCUS ON MILLIMETER SIZE, NOT JUST CARAT WEIGHT:

This is especially important with fancy-shaped diamonds.

A 1.8-carat stone can sometimes appear as large as a 2-carat stone but at a significantly lower cost. When shopping, pay close attention to the millimeter size to ensure you’re getting the best value. Choosing a diamond based solely on carat weight doesn’t always guarantee the size or look for which you’re aiming.

On Trend Rings

On the other hand, “on trend” engagement ring styles tend to reflect contemporary tastes and may vary significantly based on current fashion. Some examples of trendy designs include:

COLORED GEMSTONES: Sapphires, emeralds and other colored stones are often chosen over traditional diamonds for a unique twist.

HALO SETTINGS: A ring where a central stone is surrounded by smaller accent stones for added brilliance. Halo rings can help maximize appearance when working on a budget.

Kwiat Sapphire Diamond Ring

On Trend Rings cont.

STACKABLE RINGS: Multiple bands worn together can create a modern, personalized look.

GEOMETRIC SHAPES: Rings featuring unique shapes and designs, such as hexagons or asymmetrical styles, appeal to those seeking something different.

Three different bridal parties, three different styles. Take a look at how these brides utilized seasonal color palettes to elevate their wedding day themes.

kineshia + archie

Kineshia Smith opted for a vivid color palette rich in hues of maroon, rouge, pink and ivory.

Styled by David’s Bridal, the bridal party wore an all-black, one-shoulder, stretch satin dress by Galina Signature. The offset in color allowed for the bride to shine, and the pops of color in the florals and decor tied the theme together well for such beautiful nuptials.

To complement her chic, minimalist gown, Kelsey Shepherd selected a more maximalist bridesmaid dress for her bridal party. The bridesmaids wore a floral, bow-shoulder, satin maxi dress with an asymmetrical tiered skirt in “Cottage Rose Larkspur,” compliments of Bella Bridesmaids. These lively, whimsical gowns are not only gorgeous, but they also helped set the tone for a perfect summer wedding.

Ja’Tavia Pettway wore an emerald green, mermaid-style wedding gown, reminiscent of the Great Gatsby era. For her bridesmaids, she chose a deep saffron, off-the-shoulder jersey dress from Gabriel’s Bridal & Formal that was opposite to hers on the color wheel. These hues, paired with the groomsmen’s ivory-colored suits, made for an alluring, bohemian theme.

Tips & Tricks

from Wedding Vendors

Symone Shaw, Alex and Sara Lucas and Becky Baker–all veterans in the wedding industry–detail their do’s and don’ts to ensure success on the “big day.”

Occasions with Symone Shaw

What “wedding day” items should a bride never go without on her big day?

We always make sure to have toupee tape in our wedding day kit! It is 20 times stronger than generic clothing tape and can be used for everything.

What is the number-one mistake you see brides make on their wedding day?

The main mistake we see brides make on their wedding day is forgetting to be truly present in the moment. Do not get wrapped up in trends and making sure everything is “social media ready!” We always make sure that the day has plenty of cushion time in order for the couple to bask in the day.

What are some of the best ways to calm nerves/ alleviate anxiety before a bride walks down the aisle?

If a bride is feeling anxious before the procession, we always give her a few minutes alone to take a few deep breaths. Refocusing on why we are here is key, and those nerves always turn back into excitement.

To make the most of one’s wedding day, what do you advise a bride to prioritize?

We advise her to do a first look! Getting all of the photos done ahead of the ceremony allows the couple to spend more time with their family and friends. Time, specifically not feeling rushed, is our number-one priority.

What wedding trends do you think will become timeless, and which do you think will “date” a wedding, looking back?

In regards to wedding planning, I believe that short engagements will eventually date a wedding due to the couple being unable to truly focus on the highly curated elements that mean the most to them. For this same reason, longer engagements will always be classic and lead to timeless designs.

AL weddings

What “wedding day” items should a bride never go without on her big day?

We love when we see a wedding day kit that’s usually brought by the wedding planner that includes needed items such as bobby pins, medicines, feminine products, safety pins, stain sticks, white chalk, towelettes, tissues and other “emergency” use items.

What is the number-one mistake you see brides make on their wedding day?

Not planning enough time for hair and makeup in the morning comes to mind. It’s the first part of the day, and as the morning progresses, things can fall behind. We love when our clients remember to place themselves (and whoever is helping them in their dress) in the middle of the bunch to ensure they are ready when they need to start getting dressed.

What are some of the best ways to calm nerves/ alleviate anxiety before a bride walks down the aisle?

We really believe having an hour of down time before the ceremony helps alleviate anxiety. You are able to relax with your friends and family, knowing we’ve captured all the important moments up until this time of the day. We find many couples are so thankful to rest and re-energize without worrying about cameras or moments. It’s truly a “living in the moment” time period.

To make the most of one’s wedding day, what do you advise a bride to prioritize?

We believe most couples should look at prioritizing a photographer and a wedding planner. These are two vendors that truly ensure your entire day will flow seamlessly without stress. In our experience, our clients who select a planner that knows their other priorities (having a stress-free day, a flawless ceremony, a fun-filled reception, spending intentional time with friends and family) helps create a timeline that can be executed seamlessly.

What wedding trends do you think will become timeless, and which do you think will “date” a wedding, looking back?

We think photographs that are overly edited are going to be what “dates” the look of a wedding. The photos, to us, usually appear too far from what you see with your eyes–too warm, too dark, too bright or too many changes to the deepness and saturation of the colors. We believe a timeless look will represent the day as it naturally was. On the other hand, couples having a first look is a “trend” that we feel has come to light strongly within the past decade, and we don’t see it going anywhere. We don’t see a single emotional difference with our couples who do a first look versus our couples who choose to see each other at the aisle.

Becky's Brides

What “wedding day” items should a bride never go without on her big day?

Water is crucial! One’s wedding day is such a long day, and she’ll be on her feet a lot. Staying hydrated is key to feeling one’s best.

What is the number-one mistake you see brides make on their wedding day?

Not living in the moment and not soaking it all in is

the number-one mistake. So many brides feel so much pressure to have a perfect day because they have invested so much into such a monumental day in their lives. However, the best thing to do is trust those they’ve hired for their wedding day, and focus on marrying their spouse.

What are some of the best ways to calm nerves/alleviate anxiety before a bride walks down the aisle?

This really starts before the wedding day with who she surrounds herself with the morning of and the day of the wedding. We advise her to make sure that her bridal party is made up of the people she feels the most relaxed, at ease and comfortable around. Being around her absolute closest friends will keep the day feeling celebratory and stress-free.

To make the most of one’s wedding day, what do you advise a bride to prioritize?

Every bride needs a good wedding planner. It could even be just a coordinator if a full-service planner isn’t in the budget. Every bride needs a point person for their wedding day, so she can relax and celebrate!

Photos

What wedding trends do you think will become timeless, and which do you think will “date” a wedding, looking back?

Anything that is very trendy is going to date a wedding: disco balls, full-on Babies Breath. While they are so fun, in 20 years, one will definitely be able to date the wedding from those trends. To me, a timeless wedding can be anything that reflects the couples’ personalities, styles and love story. We encourage our couples to think about those things when making decisions, so their wedding will always be timeless to them.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We both grew up in Vestavia Hills and knew of each other, but we did not connect until after college. Daniell went to the University of Alabama, and I went to Auburn University. We actually connected through my job. I worked at a local non-profit, Smile-A-Mile, and I asked Daniell to be on our junior board. Once he officially joined the board and we connected, the rest was history.

THE PROPOSAL

Daniell is a homebuilder, and he works with his family at Taylor Burton Company. In a ruse to propose to me, he took me up to Vestavia Hills Baptist Church to “check on a job” they were doing there. It was not uncommon for him to check on jobs when on the way to dinner, so it didn’t seem suspicious to me. He asked if I wanted to come see it. He took me out to the spot behind the church that overlooks the city and got down on one knee! I was so shocked that when we walked up, I kept going, “Daniell, we have to go–someone is proposing here!”

PREPARING FOR MARRIAGE

Daniell and I started attending church together at Vestavia Hills Methodist Church while we were engaged. We joined a class there with other engaged or newly married couples. It brought us a community of people who were in the same stage of life as we were which was huge in building the foundation of our marriage.

WEDDING MOMENTS

When Daniell and I, and both of our parents, did a walk-through of the reception room together before heading to the church, it was so cool to see it all come together and to spend that intimate time with our amazing parents. No amount of “thank yous” to them will ever be enough. It was a special “calm before the chaos” moment.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We met while we were students at Auburn University.

THE PROPOSAL

Daniel proposed to me at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens, when I took a trip to visit him over Labor Day weekend. He is an officer in the U.S. Navy and was in training at Naval Station Norfolk for a few months at the time. He surprised me, when he dropped to a knee while we were walking through the gardens. Then, he took me to a surprise dinner at the top of a nice restaurant overlooking the beach.

PREPARING FOR MARRIAGE

We did premarital counseling through our church to prepare. We were mentored by an older couple with years of marriage under their belts. We loved getting to learn from them and soak up advice they offered.

WEDDING MOMENTS

We both loved having all of our friends and family together in one place to celebrate. This does not happen often, so it was truly a special day.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

Hunter and I are high school sweethearts. We technically met in first grade as we were in the same class, but neither of us will admit to remembering each other from back then. We got to know each other during our freshman year of high school. We became good friends, and that summer, he asked me to be his girlfriend.

THE PROPOSAL

Hunter proposed to me on Jan. 14, 2023, one year and one day before our wedding day! He told me we were going on a date. We then went to the Sibyl Temple in Vestavia Hills which overlooks all of Birmingham. When we got up near the top of the steps, he grabbed my hand and led me the rest of the way. He had a beautiful setup of flowers and candles. Right when I saw this, I realized he was proposing and immediately started crying tears of joy!

PREPARING FOR MARRIAGE

We attended premarital counseling with our pastor. We both agree that this equipped us with invaluable lessons, skills and knowledge that we have already used and will continue to use throughout our entire marriage.

WEDDING MOMENTS

We shared handwritten notes with each other before seeing each other on our wedding day. We were both brought into the room–where our ceremony would be held later that evening–and were positioned around a wall, so that we could not see each other. We then read our notes to each other while trying (unsuccessfully) to hold back tears. We were both so excited and ready to get married, but the moments we shared reading these letters to one another allowed us to slow down and really remember what the entire day was all about.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

Sam and I were both attending the Alpha Gam Rose Ball at the time. The bus ride to the event was long, and my friend and I did not know our dates well. We later agreed that I had a lot in common with her date, Sam. In the next few weeks, Sam got my number and invited me to his fraternity Christmas cocktail.

THE PROPOSAL

One of my favorite traditions is to go to the Alabama Theatre to see “White Christmas.” On the day of our engagement, Sam picked me up to go antiquing–one of our favorite pastimes. During our date, he told me that our next stop was within walking distance, but I was skeptical. When I was almost certain that we were nowhere near the shop, we turned the corner to the Alabama Theatre. In bright marquee letters, the sign read, “Abigail, Will You Marry Me?” When I turned around, Sam was on one knee! He later took me to dinner at City Club Birmingham, where he pulled off one more surprise–both of our families were there to celebrate with us.

PREPARING

FOR MARRIAGE

We enjoyed attending premarital counseling. We were constantly reminded of God’s blessing of engagement as we thought through tough decisions pertaining to blending our individual lives.

WEDDING MOMENTS

I have often heard fellow Christians ask one another to share their “moment closest,” a specific moment of the week where you sensed God to be nearest to you. I like to remind myself that it is not if God is present, but rather, if we are available to receive His presence. After walking down the aisle, seeing all of the faces that have supported us over the years, my cup was overflowing.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

Alex and I lived down the street from each other for more than two years and never knew! We ended up meeting through mutual friends one night and made the connection that we were neighbors. We started going on walks after work together every day around the neighborhood, and the rest is history.

THE PROPOSAL

Alex told me that we were taking family pictures for his grandmother’s 80th birthday at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. We showed up and began walking to where he told me we were meeting his family. Before I knew it, Alex was down on one knee, proposing with my best friend, Devin, hiding in the bushes while taking pictures. After he proposed, both of our families were hiding, waiting to celebrate with us. It was such a special day!

PREPARING FOR MARRIAGE

We prepared for marriage by having very intentional conversations about what we wanted our marriage to look like. We prayed that God would bless our marriage and use our marriage as an example of His goodness.

WEDDING MOMENTS

There’s so many special moments from the day, but I think the moment that stood out to me the most was when my uncle, who was our officiant, shared answers to questions we had talked about with him in private during premarital counseling prior to exchanging our vows. We got to hear why we both wanted to marry each other, what we loved most about each other and how we knew we had found the one. It had us both crying!

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We were introduced by my boss, Childersburg Middle School

Principal Jesse Hooks, who was also Hunter’s former high school football coach and a friend of Hunter’s dad, Corky. Corky was working for the school district at the time and mentioned to Jesse that Hunter had moved home. Jesse asked if Hunter was dating anyone, and upon learning he was single, Jesse decided to introduce us. He radioed for me to come to the office and told me that he found someone for me to date. He gave Corky my number on a sticky note to pass along to Hunter. We met a few weeks later for dinner at La Paz, and we have been inseparable ever since!

THE PROPOSAL

Hunter proposed on my family’s July 4th beach trip to DeBordieu, South Carolina. He proposed on the beach at sunset. Everyone told me that we should get dressed to take family pictures on the beach. Hunter was worried we would miss sunset if we went out to dinner, so we all ate Mexican takeout at home in our nicest clothes waiting on “family pictures.” Hunter took me out to Driftwood Beach and proposed to me under the most beautiful sunset. We were greeted back at our beach house with a “She Said Yes” party with our family and friends.

PREPARING FOR MARRIAGE

We had several sessions of premarital counseling at Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Church.

WEDDING MOMENTS

We loved that our priest, John Burruss, had us turn around twice during the ceremony to see the friends and family that were there to support us. It was such a special moment to take the day in and feel the love and support from those in attendance.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

About six months before we met, Nick became colleagues with one of my dad’s best friends, Tuscaloosa News columnist Cecil Hurt. Nick and my dad had met a few times. A few weeks after Cecil passed, Nick came to my parents’ house to bring my dad some of Cecil’s belongings, and I happened to be home. My mom invited Nick to stay for dinner, and what was supposed to be a quick errand for him turned into a few hours of talking, laughing and swapping stories about a dear friend gone too soon.

THE PROPOSAL

Nick travels a lot for work, and ever since we started dating, he has always sent me a postcard from every state he visits. In February 2023, I went to brunch with my sister and was planning to go to a Super Bowl party at my friend’s house that night. I was shocked when at the end of our brunch, my sister handed me a postcard from Nick with instructions to go to Vulcan (one of our first date spots), where my parents were waiting for me with another postcard. Being the writer that Nick is, each postcard had a riddle with clues of where to go next, each stop being the location of one of our previous dates. At each location was a friend or family member waiting for me with another postcard. About four stops later, I ended up on the mountain by Vestavia Hills Baptist Church, where Nick was waiting to propose.

PREPARING FOR MARRIAGE

Throughout our engagement, Nick and I sought counsel from married friends and family whom we respected.

WEDDING MOMENTS

Our first look stood out to us the most. Not only was it our first chance to see each other on our wedding day, but we also used this time to say our own personal vows before the ceremony.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

The first time I met Carson was more than nine years ago at his house. I was friends with his younger brother, and Carson and I quickly became good friends. Over the years, we would run into each other occasionally when we were out, and it was always so nice to catch up. We always had a connection, but it was never the right time so we stayed just friends. In 2020, when he was in dental school at UAB School of Dentistry, we reconnected, and things just clicked. After a few months, Carson told me he loved me, and I was so surprised! He then asked me to be his girlfriend, and I was thrilled to say, “Yes!” Carson eventually became a dentist at Magic City Dentistry, and eight months later, he asked me to spend the rest of my life with him.

THE PROPOSAL

On Jan. 14, 2023, while we were on vacation in Barbados, Carson proposed to me on the beach. It was such a magical moment, and I said, “yes,” without hesitation.

PREPARING FOR MARRIAGE

We did premarital counseling with Jean and Jeremiah Castille who really helped us prepare for marriage in our eight classes we had with them.

WEDDING MOMENTS

I lost count of how many times I cried tears of happiness! Being surrounded by all of our friends and family that loves us was so special. I couldn’t have imagined a more perfect day. If I had to pick one moment, however, it would be when I was saying my vows. I didn’t think I could be so emotional and raw in front of so many people, and I was trying not to curse out in tears.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We met in 2019 when we were both freshmen at the University of Alabama. Our mutual friends set us up one night at a party, and we were inseparable ever since.

THE PROPOSAL

Connor proposed in Banff, Canada, on a family trip. Banff was a special place to Connor’s family because his grandfather traveled there many times before he passed. The trip was filled with beautiful sightseeing of the Canadian Rockies, and at the end of the week, we dressed up to go on a gondola to Sulphur Mountain to admire the beautiful views and eat dinner. I was completely surprised and so excited when Connor got down on one knee and asked me to marry him, and obviously, I said, “Yes!”

PREPARING FOR MARRIAGE

When we got engaged, I was living in Tuscaloosa for speech therapy graduate school, and Connor was living in Birmingham. We spent our weekends together touring venues, making decisions and planning together. At the start of 2024, I moved in with Connor’s family, and it was such a special and exciting time to be in the same city again for our wedding year.

WEDDING MOMENTS

Everything about our wedding day felt perfect. We did a first look and a private dinner–just the two of us–and that really made the day feel like our day. It was so nice to have time to chat and reflect throughout the day. Our wedding weekend was when the travel craziness happened because of the Microsoft Update, so a lot of our out-of-state friends traveled on Greyhound buses to get here. That really stood out and made us feel so loved and celebrated that people went out of their way to make it to our wedding.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We met when I moved to Japan to teach English. He’s also an English teacher, so we hit it off immediately! From flying all the way from Osaka to Alabama to meet my parents for our first Christmas together, to asking my parents’ permission for my hand in marriage, Eiya is somehow more of a Southern gentleman than anyone I’ve ever met.

THE PROPOSAL

He took me to my favorite place in the world–Lake Martin–to the rolling green hills of Spring House, and he proposed to me on the top of the hill overlooking a valley of verdant Alabama farmland. It was just the two of us aside from my dog, Milo, who was wagging his tail, running around us as we hugged and cried happy tears.

PREPARING FOR MARRIAGE

Putting together a wedding from another city can be daunting. As for putting it together from another country, much less one as far as Japan, it’s no small feat! I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the love and support of my mother, Lisa.

WEDDING MOMENTS

Singing “All Star” by Smash Mouth on the trolley ride from the church to the reception with Eiya and our wedding party had to be the best way to ring in our marriage–aside from my father Mike showing off his chops, singing with the band later that night! We also had two wedding ceremonies—one in Japan in addition to our nuptials here stateside to incorporate both of our families. We got married during cherry blossom season at Isonokami Jingu Shrine in Nara, Japan, which was built around 304 A.D. and on whose hallowed grounds my husband’s family has found solace for many generations. It was a very special place to hold our ceremony.

Engagements: Perfect Backdrops for the Proposal

Hotel Esencia, Riviera Maya, Mexico hotelesencia.com

Nestled along the pristine shores of the Riviera Maya, Hotel Esencia offers a mix of lush, tropical gardens and breathtaking beachfront views. Emily West, luxury travel advisor (emilywesttravel.com) shares, “Esencia still feels like a private home oasis — exclusive and tailored to perfection. Many of the items throughout the resort’s common areas are the original art and decor from when Esencia was a private residence for a dutchess of the Ferrari family.”

Propose under the stars with a private dinner on the beach or amidst the estate’s lush greenery for an intimate moment.

Les Roches Rouges, Côte d’Azur, France beaumier.com/en/properties/les-roches-rougeshotel/

Set along the French Riviera, this boutique hotel is a slice of Mediterranean paradise. Imagine popping the question on a terrace overlooking the Azure Sea, followed by champagne at sunset.

The Madrona, Healdsburg, California themadronahotel.com

This meticulously restored Victorian mansion in Sonoma County combines wine country charm with sophisticated luxury. The gardens provide an idyllic setting for a vineyard-side proposal.

Bridesmaid & Groomsmen Getaways:

Bonding Before the Big Day

Casa Rosada, Sayulita, Mexico casarosadasayulita.com

For a laid-back yet vibrant escape, Casa Rosada is perfect. With its boho-chic vibes, colorful streets and surf-town atmosphere, Sayulita is ideal for bonding over surf lessons, beach parties and margaritas. Emily adds, “It feels like a Barbie dream house meets Moroccan flair, and you can sleep up to 14. The attention to detail with 24/7 staff makes this unparalleled for morning private yoga, sailing or themed dinner parties.”

The Horse Shoe Farm, Hendersonville, North Carolina thehorseshoefarm.com

Owned and operated by the Turchin family, The Horse Shoe Farm can best be described as Southern Hospitality with a side of woo-woo. Brides and their bridesmaids can spend an afternoon in the Stable Spa getting facials and having tarot cards read. Then they can take the steps to the top of the silo for a moment of reflection (bring your Sharpie to add a great quote to the walls), or indulge in meditation or other wellness sessions.

Vermejo Reserve, New Mexico, USA

tedturnerreserves.com/vermejo/

For the adventurous group, this sprawling reserve offers activities like fly fishing, hiking and wildlife safaris. It’s a nature-lover’s paradise, with plenty of opportunities for camaraderie around a roaring fire. Emily notes, “Personally, I think one of the best parts of the resort is that it’s all-inclusive, including meals, activities, alcohol and transportation around the property. In terms of value, it exceeds expectations while remaining approachable and giving guys opportunities for quality time and activities together.”

The Ansonborough, Charleston, South Carolina theansonborough.com

For guys’ groups looking to enjoy a bit of everything on their “mancation,” The Ansonborough is an ideal home base. Originally built in 1901 as a stationer’s warehouse in the city’s oldest neighborhood, the hotel is just a short stroll to the best restaurants, activities, historic sites and nightlife Charleston has to offer. Make sure to check out the hidden poker room as well as the Rooftop Garden overlooking the harbor.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has shown her support, officially proclaiming the week before the Iron Bowl as “Kerry & Gary Challenge to Defeat ALS Week.”

Both Kerry and Gary have been diagnosed with ALS since their departure from collegiate athletics. With the annual cost reaching $250,000 to care for an ALS patient, Kerry and Gary have decided to compete to see which of their alma maters can raise the most money for the ALS Association, with all proceeds raised by Auburn and Alabama set to help a neighbor in your town living with ALS.

The multi-platform fundraising event kicks off each year around the famed Iron Bowl. During the run up to the big rivalry, both the Auburn Tigers and Alabama Crim-

A CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION

It was all smiles at Vestavia Hills Elementary Cahaba Heights’s Centennial Celebration on Friday, Jan. 24. Past and present educators, faculty, staff and students came together to celebrate the school’s 100th anniversary to review historical artifacts, take tours of the school and even bury a time capsule on the school’s grounds. The best moment of the day was when everyone, as well as current students, gathered to sing, “Happy Birthday,” to the school, marking a historic day for the Cahaba Heights community.

MY VESTAVIA HILLS

KATHERINE MCREE

Get Outdoors

Cahaba River

This is easy! My absolute favorite outdoor spot is the Cahaba River. Will and I canoe and fish the Cahaba through Liberty Park and around Altadena Park. Who knew Vestavia Hills had such amazing access and beauty in our own backyard? We soak up the beauty and tranquility of the river every chance we get.

Eat Local FoodBar

Vestavia Hills has so many options for dining out, so it’s hard to pick just one. The chicken Coq au Vin at FoodBar is something that I crave often (and it’s not always on the menu). We typically sit at the bar and order drinks, boiled peanuts, fried oysters and our meal. It’s kind of like upscale Cheers, where everybody knows your name.

Fellowship in Community

Deck the Heights

My top-of-the-list event is always Deck the Heights in November. Christmas is my favorite time of year and just takes me back to my childhood. Seeing the smiles of families soaking up the season at each stop just gives me the “warm and fuzzies.” To me, it’s just magical.

Sentimental Spots

Cahaba Heights

Our home, Wald Park, Cahaba Heights Elementary, The Lili Pad, St. Stephen’s, Bistro V, Sibyl Temple and the entire neighborhood of Cahaba Heights are all special places to me. Will and I moved to Cahaba Heights in 1996 before it was annexed into Vestavia Hills in 2002. My passion runs deep in this city because of all the special memories we have made here. From little league baseball, school programs, raising a beautiful family, starting a business, planning a wedding and becoming grandparents, Vestavia Hills has been the community in which we have done it all.

Strength in Numbers

The April 27th Tornadoes

The F2 tornado that came through Cahaba Heights on April 27, 2011 was one of the most impactful memories of my life. The tornado hit our home and our business around 5:30 a.m. The community was devastated. However, patrons came together to help rebuild and support one another. To see how far we have all come since that day is amazing. It speaks volumes of the Cahaba Heights community.
