Jessica & Matt

Minutes after hearing about Matt, Jessica called her mom to say she may have found her future soul mate.

HHalf a decade ago I remember sitting on a fence about the inevitable “ring by spring” epidemic that seemed to plague the female senior population on campus. In the spring semester of my freshman year, I recall perusing through corridors, embarking to classes and dodging girls flashing the rocks on their fingers.

Then, I would’ve said girls should focus on their education and avoid the so-called “MRS” degree that skeptics such as myself would joke about being one attainment so many seem to pursue.

Admittedly, I am now only five years wiser and humbled to say I so enjoy being engaged because I found my “Mr. Right.”

I look back at freshman me, whose face resembled that of a pepperoni pizza and whose stress level required four mugs of joe a day, and laugh, thinking if only she knew that she, too, would fall in love at a young age.

One of my best friends, Beth, and I were invited to lunch by my cousin, Bobby, while we all happened to be in Gulf Shores, Alabama. We met up with Bobby and unknowingly to us several of his fraternity brothers. I sat right next to my “Mr. Right” himself, who looked completely uninterested that two Hippie Sabotage enthusiasts were helping themselves to the table’s shared cornucopia of breadsticks.

Hours soon faded as the sun retreated, and Justin, my now fiancé and father of my son, and I became inseparable. We played tic-tac-toe in the sand, drawing janky lines with our toes and trying to out-wit the other. Unfortunately, tic-tac-toe takes all of 30 seconds to play, so there’s not much room to one-up your opponent. Our conversation soon turned to politics, music tastes, our lives’ ambitions and how we each were going to make our mark in the world. The rest, as the cliché goes, is history.

Now just a few short months out from our tying the knot, I can’t help but smile at the younger version of myself, who was utterly disgusted by the idea of being entrapped by love.

My message for you, readers, is that life often tricks you into thinking you’re in control. I believe in a greater power who has a sense of humor–one that involves the best plans for us. To the young and hopeful reading my letter, I pray for you to find your “Mr. or Mrs. Right,” but just know that he or she may meet you when you least expect it. But, isn’t that the beauty of falling in love? Adventure is the path of which love blooms between two aspiring souls. To that I say, love on.

Warmly,

How did your significant other propose…or how did you propose?

Drove me up to the waterfall where we had our first date/first kiss. We prayed together before he popped the question.

Sitting in front of Vail Hall at Samford University, he said, “When we get married,” but that’s as far as he got. I said, “No one has asked me.” He then, being the proper gentleman, asked!

My friend set up a fun “girls only” photo shoot, so I’d be dressed up for the engagement pictures!

We hiked a trail leading to cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. While I was admiring the view, he pulled out a ring and asked me to be his bride. I said YES!

We were sitting on the sofa at my grandfather’s house. Craig Dobbins said, “Will you marry me?” I said, “Sure, I don’t have anything better to do this weekend.”

We joked we were married from almost the beginning. One day we got “fake rings.” In the future we will have a “real wedding,” but if you know us, our proposal story fits us!

FAITHFUL CRAFTS

Angela Morris’s art is as special as those who she creates for—the hopeful, looking to make a difference .

AAs Angela Morris works with wire of silver and copper in her Vestavia Hills-based workshop, she remembers how she loved making things as a child—making anything, really. She loved to paint and draw and, after having children of her own, making beaded silverware. Manipulating the metals to shape a piece with meaning and inspiration became her passion after one day forming a cross from the metal in her hand.

“While I was making cross designs, a friend’s name came to mind,” Angela says. “She had been working really hard under stressful conditions, and

I wanted her to know I was thinking about her. She told me I had no idea how timely this gift was for her and how much it meant to her. The gift gave her a little sense of peace. It made her smile knowing someone cared and reminded her that God was with her.”

It never occurred to Angela that one of her crosses might make a difference in someone’s day. “Could it really be an instrument to let someone know someone really cares about them or think about God for a minute? That was just something I never thought about until I heard her words.” So, Angela

started making more crosses and expanded into jewelry—each having a swirl or a cross on it—to remind the wearer that during life’s ups and downs God is always with us.

Over the years, Angela has refined her skills as a jewelry maker by teaching herself different techniques using videos, silversmith classes and experimenting with other metals and textures for earrings, necklaces, pendants, rings and her beloved crosses. “I start with wire wrapping and then add cold connections, which are different ways to attach metal or mixed media without needing heat. I do stamping, embossing, soldering and create color and depth with patinas.”

Inspiration is always in supply. The artist says she is always looking for different shapes, patterns and colors in nature and in everything she sees, especially when traveling. On a trip to Israel last summer, Angela found beautiful olive wood crosses in a Bethlehem shop. The owners, who are brothers, make the crosses. “The natural wood patterns were all unique and beautiful! I had to have them to use as the cross on some of my prayer beads and jewelry.”

After deciding on a design, Angela chooses what metal she will use—sterling silver, German silver, copper, brass or aluminum. She then decides on a shape, stamps or hand-cuts them out. Next, it’s texture time. “This could be folds, embossed texture, or a hammered texture,” Angela explains. “Sometimes two pieces are soldered together to create the texture or design.

Then, I decide if I want to add a patina. With copper, I can use a flame to create different colors in the metal or use different solutions to darken it or create a natural-green color.”

At this point, bead embellishments or stones are added. Most pieces are tumbled for shine, and some are treated to keep the colors vibrant. The final steps are choosing the bindings, ear wires and chain.

“I love working with copper. It is a soft metal, so it’s easy to manipulate. After you work with it for a while, it does get hard; it can be heated up to make it soft again. It’s easy to texture, and you can create many different colors with copper,” Angela says. “You can flame paint it. The heat at different temperatures creates a rainbow of colors. When you darken a textured copper piece, it highlights the texture so beautifully.”

Angela travels with her crosses and jewelry to art shows, craft fairs and markets across Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. With each show or custom order, Angela hopes her creations find their way to someone and help them somehow.

“One of my customers gifted her friend one of my small, beaded crosses. Her friend loved the cross, and when she wore it, she received so many compliments that she decided to give them to her friends. She was 84 years old and asked the woman who bought her the cross to work with me to order her the cross. She requested 13 crosses with beads of the same colors as their birthstones. I made 10 different crosses and got them to her for

One of Angela’s cross designs was chosen by a prayer shawl ministry to adorn a beautifully and lovingly-made stole. “I made two of the same crosses for them and made holes on all sides of the crosses, so they could easily sew them into the stole. They loved how it turned out and sent me pictures

in progress and the finished stole along with a nice thank you note.”

With each piece, Anglea hopes it prompts the new owner to think about God for a minute and let them know someone is thinking about them. “I include a verse on a card with every purchase that will hopefully inspire,” Angela says.

FOOD DRINK&

BAYOU CLASSICS

Cajun Seafood House has a history of serving both delicious food and Southern hospitality with every dish.

CChar-grilled oysters, packed and delivered on ice when you need them most—that’s not listed on the menu. (Well, the oysters are). Cajun Seafood House Owner and Chef Avi Soto and his team are prepared to do almost anything for their regulars. That includes making a special oyster delivery to the hospital, or booking out the restaurant for a family gathering, or celebrating the highs and lows alongside the people they serve.

Across nearly 10 years of business, each meal and story joins a collection of memories Avi has made through his cooking and generosity. The Cajun classics as well as the restaurant’s involvement in the community have made it a Vestavia Hills staple. “We’re just a small family and a small family restaurant business, and I’m just a cook and just

one member of the team,” he says. “This is one of the best cities to open a restaurant, and with customers who have supported us for nine years, we have been proud to be part of the city of Vestavia.”

In 2014, Avi decided to open his own restaurant after working and cooking in other Cajun kitchens. He learned, throughout his time preparing all the Louisiana favorites, how many people are drawn to Cajun food and decided to focus on those dishes in his own restaurant.

Avi says that, when people first think of Cajun food, they think about the spice—but he hopes to cook within a range of cayenne with dishes for every taste palette. The variety of what his customers enjoy ordering is what’s always made him like Cajun cooking, and that’s only grown at

CHEF’S PICKS

Avi can usually read someone who asks him for a recommendation. “You’ve got to recognize your customers,” he says. “Everything is on the menu because people ask for it, and people like it.” He and Savannah shared some favorite dishes to try when you come in to sit down for a bite.

uDrink: Go with a hurricane! While Cajun Seafood House has a great selection of beer, wine and classic cocktails, try a Louisiana favorite from their crafted cocktails menu.

uStarter: Savannah says Avi’s crabcakes with his made-from-scratch remoulade are some of the best she’s ever had. You can’t go wrong with a cup of gumbo added to any order.

uEntrée: Anything from Avi’s Specialties is going to be a great way to start your meal as all meals demonstrate his culinary expertise in fresh seafood and various seasonal specialties. The Mardi Gras Pasta is also a favorite among po’boys, pots to share and platters.

uDessert: Cajun Seafood House has a Southern lineup of desserts with pies and puddings, but get the beignets to complete your Cajun meal.

Cajun Seafood House.

At the restaurant, you’ll find the standards—like gumbo, jambalaya and red beans and rice—as well as Creole and Cajuninspired dishes and Avi’s Specialties, including the red snapper and stuffed shrimp. “When you’re cooking a dish, you see what people like and if people come back for that dish or see something different on the menu,” Avi says. “You know it’s good once you see what people like and see them coming back.”

Restaurant managers Savannah and Killan Duran joined Soto’s team shortly after the restaurant opened and have stayed ever since, helping the restaurant grow and find its place in the community.

The day Savannah came in to try the food—after Killan started his role at the restaurant—was a short-staffed day, and Savannah began to wait tables almost immediately. She’s been at the front of the restaurant throughout her time serving, bartending and now taking on managerial duties. “I’ve eaten every shift for the seven years I’ve worked here,” Savannah says.

Savannah and Killan have been with Avi through some of the restaurant’s biggest moments, one being the restaurant’s fiveyear anniversary, which they celebrated with a customer appreciation party alongside all their regulars with all the favorite drinks and appetizers. “We got to see everybody who’s been supporting us throughout the years,” Savannah says. Now approaching year 10 and making it through the pandemic, there

is always more to celebrate, and they love to share that with the customers and city that has always supported them.

Avi and his team are generous in opening up their doors for any occasion. It’s become a space for every kind of event from Vestavia sports dinners to police events to wedding parties to church meetings. They love to hang up the posters they receive and find ways to give back to the people who walk through their doors. “We love to help, and we love to share a little bit of that generosity back to Vestavia,” Avi says.

Savannah knows customers from the neighborhood and beyond by name, and she’s had quite a few Louisiana natives sing their praises for the food. And, Avi is always looking for ways to make customers an important part of the restaurant, always curious of what people like and are looking for on the menu, and always aiming to be an active partner in the community.

Avi and Savannah know their recommendations—often pointing to Avi’s Specialties, daily or seasonal specials and dishes based on someone’s spice preference—as well as their own day-to-day favorites from the kitchen. Savannah says that she’s never eaten during every shift at another restaurant the way she does at Cajun Seafood House, and there’s always something new on the menu for her to try.

The crabcakes were an early favorite of hers, and now Savannah loves to grab the blackened shrimp or gator tacos for lunch. Avi also has his favorites for the day too, usually some

combination of potatoes, a po’boy and a cup of gumbo—the classics that still bring people into the space.

Many of the first people who walked in and sat at the bar when Avi opened are the same ones at the same barstools, which is something all the Cajun Seafood House staff hold high. In approaching year

10, they’ve created traditions of their own while keeping up the traditional Cajun cuisine people love.

“It’s a lot of good memories,” Avi says. “I think that’s the reason people are still supporting us. We’re successful in our location, and with the people working for us, we’re still here for them.”

A GUIDE TO ALL THINGS WHITE, BRIGHT & BEAUTIFUL

pickingflorals

Birmingham local Susan Milner of Susan Milner Design sheds light on picking the perfect bouquets for every wedding season.

After 35 years in the interior design industry and 12 years in the wedding florals business, Susan Milner has seen it all. The beautiful, the intricate and the innately unique are all words that come to mind when describing the bouquets she creates for a bride’s big day.

Susan Milner Design was born through Susan’s volunteer work, planning events and decorating florals for her childrens’ school events such as proms and dinner banquets. A few of the other moms noticed her talent and asked her if she’d consider arranging florals for their own events, including their childrens’ weddings. What started as a side hustle is now one of Birmingham’s premier wedding floral businesses, which actually is but a branch of her own interior design company.

“Doing floral design was a natural extension of my interior design career,” Susan says. “A lot of the same mental tools are used. You need to understand how to work with color, proportions, scale. Those are universal design tools that apply to both fields.”

Susan began designing florals for two to three weddings a year, but now she does near 20 weddings or more a year.

“I have probably done 250 weddings,” Susan says with a laugh. Reflecting back on all of her brides’ nuptials, she’s quick to offer key advice.

“Brides should pick something they will love 20 years [down the road], looking at wedding pictures,” she explains. “To me, one of the biggest things is to try to stay away from trends. Classic, timeless designs are a hallmark of my work. I encourage brides to choose florals that are classic and will stand the test of time.”

One constant in Susan’s work is her dedication to helping a bride’s vision come to fruition on her wedding day. She recalls how the feeling she gets, watching a bride see her bouquet for the first time, is simply magical.

“My ultimate goal is for the bride to just be beyond thrilled with her florals,” Susan adds. “I want to exceed all expectations. I want to create florals that are beautiful, and I want to be proud to put my name on anything. Most importantly, I want the bride to be happy.”

Pure joy is a sentiment that all of Susan’s brides share. Here, Susan offers her take on seasonal florals that contribute to the “wedding bliss feeling.”

Visit susanmilnerdesign.com to start a conversation about the best florals for a bride’s big day.

“Soft, airy colors and flowy textures just says, ‘spring,’” Susan explains. “Flowers such as spring bulbs, daffodils, hyacinth and foxglove are all just beautiful hallmarks of spring.” For this season, Susan recommends brides choose soft pastels such as pinks and whites to create a subtle, timeless design in their bouquets.

summer florals

“Peonies are very summery,” Susan says. “You can go one of two ways in summer. You can go with soft pastels with cool whites, ivories and greenery. Or, you can go on the other end of the spectrum and do really hot, vibrant colors like orange and purple.” Whatever a bride chooses, Susan adds that the bouquet should match the aura of the dress. A more traditional silhouette, she believes, should pair with a more modest bouquet shape.

flofallrals

“Dahlias are the number one fall flowers that come to mind. They’re only available mid-to-late summer and in the fall. I also use ranunculus throughout the year. They’re fitting for fall,” Susan says. “To me, the richer colors and bringing in natural elements like berries, seed pods and fall greenery are the best inspiration for a fall bouquet.”

winter florals

As for winter florals, Susan recommends either going with a “cool-white aesthetic” or playing on the season’s colors, such as red and green for Christmas or blue and white for Hanukkah. “I love bringing in wintery greens like pines and cedars,” Susan adds. “The scent can transport you to another place.”

Bride Guide

Mary Glenn McElveen’s “how to look book” for dressing your bridal best.

Growing up in Mountain Brook, Mary Glenn McElveen woke up every morning ready to conquer the day in style. From strutting her high school’s hallways to making statements at social activities, Mary Glenn’s time spent curating her own style has contributed to her reputation as a stylist and tastemaker in her hometown.

“I remember as a little girl playing dress up,” she explains. “It was my creative outlet. Honestly, that hasn’t stopped in my life. Now, everyday style really is a part of who I am today. I feel like this is where I thrive.”

Being fashion forward, she says, has evolved in meaning to her over time. Now, it’s about accentuating her clients’ confidence by helping them feel the most like themselves in what they wear. Why? Because when one feels like a more “elevated” version of herself, she stands a little taller, walks more confidently and acts with purpose.

After graduating from Mountain Brook High School, Mary Glenn attended the University of Alabama, eventually earning a degree in marketing. Through her classes she learned the importance of selling her talents, whether this was through social media or the way she presented herself in fashion and design. This prompted her to spend the next few years styling houses and curating her taste inside the closet and throughout the home.

Around this time, girls that Mary Glenn had been helping style since they were high schoolers started getting engaged and needing Mary Glenn’s help for life’s more memorable moments. This sparked the realization that her clients and community had styling needs that she could meet more full-time.

“With my background being in the design world, [I formed] a lot of client-based relationships,” she says. “I’ve always been able to connect with people, really understanding their needs.”

This simple request soon snowballed into what is now Mary Glenn’s own business, M.G. Style. Boasting more than 35,000 Instagram followers, M.G. Style is one of Birmingham and the greater area’s premier styling companies. Mary Glenn focuses on dressing clients for travels, galas, everyday “looks” and more.

Here, with wedding fever in the air, Mary Glenn offers her expertise in how to dress a bride for her anticipated wedding festivities.

Engagement

Photo Shoot

Bachelorette Trip

Mary Glenn loves the movement of the skirt and the sweater together because it creates a very relaxed look. The outfit isn’t boring, but it isn’t too “loud,” either. Sourced locally from Le Weekend.

Adding color for a bachelorette trip is really fun. Brides are already going to be wearing white for all of their other events, so this is something that can be restyled for a honeymoon. Sourced locally from Effie’s.

The Little, Black Dress

This faux leather dress Mary Glenn has already worn to an office party, a dinner and more. The fabric and kneelength hem makes this dress versatile, which adds for another non-white option to add to a bride’s closet. This style is great for grabbing drinks with friends, perusing wedding venues, shopping for bridesmaid gifts and other wedding excursions. It is a “day to night” kind of dress. Sourced locally from Tulipano Boutique.

44 Spring 2023

Engagement Party

The off-the-shoulder silhouette and flared pants complement one another well. The outfit is not as formal but still classy and elegant enough for an upscale evening. The neckline alludes to a sophisticated nature about the outfit; whereas, the pants add more of a casual flair. Fun fact: Mary Glenn actually helped design this handbag which is named, the “M.G.” The bag is from a collaboration with the handbag line, J. LOWERY. Sourced locally from Le Weekend.

Bridesmaids’

Luncheon

Rehearsal Dinner

This modest, cute go-to outfit is perfect for a light lunch with the gals to celebrate a bride’s nuptials. The light material and length is appropriate for the warmer seasons, which is significant, considering the events in which this dress can be reworn. Think church services, graduations, Mother’s Day and other events. Sourced locally from Effie’s.

This elevated but simple outfit is great for the bride’s shining moment, walking down the aisle for the first time during the rehearsal. This glam also pairs nicely for dinner afterwards as it is a little understated but still contributes to the “wow” moment guests feel, gazing at the bride’s beauty. Sourced locally from Effie’s.

Getting Ready for “The Big Day”

This elegant, silk caftan is customizable and able to be reworn around the home or out and about on the town. The fabric easily transforms to makeshift for a sophisticated allure. Sourced locally from Heezie’s.

Bling to Match the Ring

Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but for each seasonal wedding, different gems and styles can spruce up a girl’s ensemble, too. Pearls make for a classic, timeless look. Fun colors and dangle earrings are perfect for a ritzy night out or a reception as well. Sourced locally from Heezie’s, Effie’s and Tulipano.

The Reception Look

This cocktail dress is for the bride’s moment. Adding details like sparkles or a bow really makes the outfit fun and festive, which is perfect for a reception or as an exit dress. This dress in particular has a detachable bow in the back. It also has a v-neckline with a removable sequin bandeau. Sourced locally from Le Weekend.

Find your Ride

A spectacular sendoff is the perfect wrap to a wonderful wedding weekend, and there’s nothing more glamorous than making the “getaway” in an elegant vintage automobile.

The Vintage Ride

The Rolls Royce is the international symbol of luxury motoring, and this British beauty is the crown jewel of the Dream Drives BHM collection. Couples enjoy a memorable richness and comfort when they ride in this impeccable 1958 Silver Cloud.

A Ride Predating WWII

Newlyweds Shania and Weston Caldwell made their getaway together in this exquisite pre-WWII Packard. Friends and family enjoyed a picture-perfect farewell.

It doesn’t get more classic than this! Davis and Delaney McDougal made their “getaway” in a true beauty named Ruby, a sporty Packard 250 convertible, after dancing the night away at The Club The legendary Birmingham club opened its doors in 1951, which is the same year Ruby rolled off the assembly line!

Bridesmaid Gifts

Your bridesmaids stand by you on one of the most important days of your life. Here’s a guide as to how to thank them.

The perfect bridesmaid gift is one with sentimental value. The best are often those with a hand-written note, detailing how thankful the bride is for the commitment her bridesmaids made to achieve the bride’s wedding dreams.

If you’re a bride and don’t know where to start, consider putting your thoughts on paper first. Express your love and thankfulness to each bridesmaid individually. No one likes a generic note. Next, think of the aesthetic of your wedding. Are you going for shabby-chic or more of a classic, timeless vibe? Your gifts will want to reflect your desired aesthetic and complement the color palette and theme you choose.

Here are a few things brides should consider when creating their bridesmaid gifts.

DON’T FORGET THE WINE!

If you or your bridesmaids prefer non-alcoholic beverages, sodas, teas and lemonade make the perfect substitute. Small wine bottles with bridesmaid stickers are small enough to fit in a tote or handbag but sentimental enough because the bride can pair them with a sweet note.

HOW DO YOU WANT YOUR GIFTS TO LOOK?

One of the most important parts of any bridesmaid gift is the “look.” Your friends will feel honored that you asked them to be in your wedding. While the gift is a nice gesture, the pictures of the gifts last forever. The packaging, wrapping, ribbon, color scheme and trinkets inside all should match to stand out.

WHAT CAN YOU PACKAGE, GIFT AND SHIP?

Often, brides think of innately-decorated chocolates and cookies to add to their bridesmaid gifts. These are cute, but if you’re shipping your gifts especially to your out-of-town friends, you’re going to want to use non-perishable items. But, for friends near home, edible croissants with fruit or neat pastries are a sweet and inexpensive way to thank your friends who’re standing by your side.

THINK OF GIFTS THAT CAN BE REUSED IN THE FUTURE. Another great gift is one in which can be used again and again. Wedding koozies, hats and sunglasses are gifts that bridesmaids can use for the bachelorette trip! Finding ways to cut down on expenses without having to sacrifice style is important for every bridal party.

WHERE ARE YOU GIVING YOUR BRIDESMAIDS THEIR GIFTS? Location, location, location! The area that you’re gifting your bridesmaid gifts is an essential part of the friendly gesture. Some brides choose to mail them, but for those wanting an in-person feel, consider this: gift your bridesmaids their gifts at a place that you all can celebrate. A bridesmaids’ luncheon, an engagement party and even a bachelorette trip are all perfect occasions to give your gifts. A poolside retreat, for example, is a great location to give your bridesmaids something they’ll love. Everyone will be enjoying the pool party, and your bridesmaids will get something to take home, too!

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

(Jack’s Point of View): Emily and I grew up only three minutes away from each other, first meeting one another at the pool at Wald Park. We even sat beside each other in grade school. We first “dated” in sixth grade, but Emily broke my heart two weeks before Valentine’s Day. We reconnected again in eighth grade and have been together since. It wasn’t until March 9, 2016, when I was in an accident that I realized I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life with anyone other than Emily. That feeling was so profound that I, as a die-hard Alabama fan, followed her to Auburn University for college where our love eventually blossomed into marriage.

THE PROPOSAL

I was originally planning on proposing at The Club, but it shut down temporarily during the pandemic. I then had to act fast and change it to Sybil Temple–a place we share many memories–just days before the proposal. I had a photographer hide in the bushes to take photos, and it was better than either of us could have imagined.

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

(Emily’s Point of View): One of our favorite moments of the entire wedding was walking down the aisle to each other. We had dreamed about this for years before it actually happened. Seeing it all come to fruition was incredible. There is no better feeling in the world than to be married to your best friend!

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

We had so many favorite details. One was walking down the aisle with my granny’s first Bible and my late mimi’s ring attached to my bouquet. Jack is a lover of classic cars, so it was only fitting we left in one. It was a special touch to our day.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

Jacob and I met during our freshman year at Belmont University in Nashville. We had mutual friends but didn’t really get to know each other until a couple of years later through student government. I was secretly crushing on him and finally got up the nerve to ask him to my sorority’s formal! He got the hint, and it was all history from there.

THE PROPOSAL

As someone who considers myself very hard to surprise, I was so impressed with what Jacob pulled off for the proposal! It was July Fourth weekend, and I was under the impression that we were going to the lake with friends on Saturday. When a last-minute “picnic” with another couple was planned for Friday, I was somewhat suspicious but told myself not to read into it. My friend and I prepped for the picnic, then we met the guys at Fort Negley Park, a beautiful overlook near downtown Nashville. When Jacob got out of the car, I instantly knew something was going on because he was wearing a blazer! (To a picnic in July)? Before I knew it, Jacob got down on one knee and popped the question! It couldn’t have been a more beautiful night.

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

My favorite moment during our wedding was walking down the aisle together at the end of the ceremony. Hearing the grand “Wedding March” on the organ, turning around to see all of our family and friends smiling at us and walking hand-in-hand for the first time that day was simply magical.

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

Many of my favorite details were from our ceremony. Our pastor delivered a beautiful message that encapsulated what a sacrificial, loving marriage should look like. The church sanctuary was a classic, traditional setting, and the quartet was moving.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We met through work when we were completing the same student program! We didn’t interact much, but I would always take the opportunity to go to post-work events to get closer to him. Eventually, we started taking weekend trips together, and the friendship moved to marriage! We still work at the same place we interned and are very much enjoying our time together during lunch dates.

THE PROPOSAL

One random Thursday, I got a text from my sister, asking to go to a karaoke bar that night. Once Jimmy and I got home, got ready and left the house, he took a “wrong turn” and took me instead to the gazebo on the lake in our neighborhood. It had been decorated with lights and pictures, where he then popped the question!

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

My favorite moment was during bridal party pictures, where we attempted a dip. Jimmy proceeded to lean a bit too far forward and actually dropped me! Everyone started rushing to help, but my mom proceeded to yell at my photographer to “keep taking pictures” instead of helping. She and Jimmy were so worried about if I was mad, but I’ve never laughed harder! When we got those pictures back, they made me laugh as much as when the moment happened because I could see everyone’s reactions, too.

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

Jewelry has always been something special to me and my family. My earrings were borrowed from my grandmother, who got them from her mother, and my bracelet was a graduation gift made from gold and small diamonds from my greatgrandmother’s engagement ring.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We met online in the summer of 2019. Brighton had just returned from a mission trip to Ukraine, and we bonded over our love of international missions. After talking everyday multiple times a day for about a week, we went on our first date to Avenue Pub in Tuscaloosa. We had a great time and knew this was something special and different!

THE PROPOSAL

We were at the beach for Brighton’s 30th birthday. Little did I know he was planning to propose afterwards! Throughout the day, he had been talking about wanting to see a bridge in Alys Beach and suggested we walk there after dinner. Once we crossed the bridge, Brighton got down on one knee and proposed! Brighton also booked a local 30A photographer, Sara, whom he found through Local Lens, to capture the proposal.

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

My favorite moment was our first look. I will never forget the look on Brighton’s face and the love I saw in his eyes. I remember thinking, “I cannot wait to marry this man.” After our first look, we exchanged wedding presents which is also a moment I will never forget. Brighton collects sports cards and had been talking about a specific one for months. I found the card for him and will never forget the excitement on his face as he opened it!

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

One of my favorite details was our wedding invitations and programs. They were designed by my youngest sister, McKinley Rohrer, who is a graphic designer. They were extra special because someone very close to me put time and effort into making sure they were perfect, and everything I wanted!

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We are both intensive care nurses and started new jobs at the same hospital around the same time. During my first week, I met his cousin and after getting to know me, she decided Matt and I would be perfect together. After she told me all about Matt and who he was as a person, I remember calling my mom minutes after and telling her that this could be my future husband–which was very unlike me. That evening he reached out to me, and the rest is history.

THE PROPOSAL

Matt and I love spending time at the beach, and one of my favorite things to do is watch sunsets. During Labor Day weekend, we had a trip planned to Tampa, Florida, to visit his sister. Matt and I had late dinner reservations, so he wanted us to go walk on the beach and watch the sunset beforehand. He surprised me and proposed on the beach!

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

My favorite moment during the wedding was the ceremony itself. I told our pastor the one thing I wanted for our ceremony was for it to be personal and intentional. I wanted all our family and friends that were there to feel as though they knew us and our story well. As the pastor shared our story, he intertwined it with the Gospel, illuminating how we were becoming one through Christ while glorifying Him.

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

I loved my flower bouquets and my wedding invitation suite! I was very specific on what I wanted–all white and cream flowers, clean cut and a touch of greenery for garnish. The bouquets exceeded my expectations! My invitations had a custom monogram at the top, which added a personalized flare, and each invitation was different. I loved the sleekness and elegance of them.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

Reed and I both pursued our respective sports at Wofford College. We both found ourselves in a class called Taste of Chocolate for our January interim. We had mutual friends who encouraged us to meet, and our connection continued to grow during our class and continued on afterwards. I knew there was something special from the moment I met him because of his ability to make me feel so comfortable.

THE PROPOSAL

We had been dating for about five years, so I knew the question was going to be coming soon. My mom told me that I needed to get dressed up, so we could go run some errands before meeting for dinner. She told me she wanted to drive up on Vestavia Drive to look at spots for “potential” engagement pictures sometime in the future. Once we drove up, she began to slow down, and I looked out the window and saw Reed standing there. It was the easiest “yes” ever!

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

My favorite moment from the wedding was when we were leaving the church. We were finally married and getting to see all of the people that love us the most was wonderful. There was just so much joy between the two of us, and you could feel that love and joy radiating throughout the entire cathedral.

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

I absolutely loved my florals, which were done by the Paper and Petal Co. They were classic and simple just like I had imagined. I also loved having a dress change from a ceremony gown to a reception gown. It was a fun surprise when we entered when everyone saw that I had changed.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We originally connected through a dating app in 2018. Our first real date was to the Alabama Theatre to watch “Rebel Without A Cause.” Afterwards, we went to Paramount for dinner and played arcade games. We both didn’t want the date to end, so we continued on to Atomic Lounge where we dressed in silly costumes and chatted all night.

THE PROPOSAL

Returning from a trip to the Florida Keys, we stopped in Orlando. That night the two of us went into Disney Springs for dinner. Randall booked a balcony table to set the mood. When he got down on one knee, I actually thought he dropped something! It was the best surprise ever when he pulled out the ring!

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

My favorite wedding moment was the beautiful speeches given by our mothers. We asked our officiant for a traditional Italian ceremony and within that, he asked for dedications to the bride and groom. Our mothers both stood in front of us and gave the most eloquently-spoken dedications to each of us.

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

The first day we pulled up the drive to Relais Villa la Trinita, I was mesmerized. The villa was originally built in 1892 and is surrounded by rose bushes, hydrangeas, a giant jasmine tree and roman ruins, as the villa sits along Via Cassia. Our favorite thing about our entire wedding other than just the amazing location would have to be the food cooked by Fabio, Matteo and their team at Convivium Laboratorio di Cucina. The day before the wedding, we had a cooking class with Fabio and Matteo at the villa, where we made Supplì al Telefono, Civitonico and five different pasta variations.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

(Davis’s point of view): I was walking through the hallways of Vestavia Hills High School when a girl, who I had never seen before, passed by me and caught my eye. I wish I could put into words the way I felt when I first saw her. My only thoughts were, “Wow, I am going to marry her.” Shortly after that encounter, Chandler and I began to spend time together. I unfortunately was 45 minutes late to our first date, but luckily, the first impression must not have been too bad considering we are finally married!

THE PROPOSAL

Davis proposed to me at a city overlook that both of us loved to visit when we went on dates. Davis told me we were going out to a nice dinner downtown. I should have known it was coming because he kept nervously fidgeting with the radio every few minutes. It had rained on and off all day, but God was good! For the 30 minutes that Davis and I stood at the overlook, a beautiful, foggy mist covered the area–and no rain! It was absolutely perfect.

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

My favorite moment of the entire day was walking down the aisle to Davis. I had been an excited, nervous wreck all morning, and so had he. We did a first look, which was absolutely perfect, but I still had excited nerves. As I stood behind the closed doors that were about to open for the ceremony, I remember telling my dad that it was the calmest I felt all day. It was the best feeling.

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

If I had to pick, my favorite wedding detail has to be the florals. It was a super hot day in late June, but the flowers held up and lasted all night. I adored my bouquet and love to look back and see it “pop” in pictures. It was a dream come true to see my floral pinterest board come to life.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We met the summer before our sophomore year at Auburn University and were introduced through a mutual friend. We actually then went a couple of months without meeting again until we ran into each other and were introduced yet again by another mutual friend. After spending time getting to know each other, we realized our relationship was special.

THE PROPOSAL

Jackson had planned a special date for us that night to celebrate the last day of my finals week (I was in Physician Assistant School at Samford University). He picked me up earlier than expected, saying he wanted to catch the sunset before going to dinner. He took me to Vestavia Drive, which is one of my favorite places. He had two chairs set up on the top of the mountain to sit in and watch the sunset. Before we even sat down, Jackson told me he wanted to tell me something important and that is when he proposed! He even gifted me a beautiful Bible with my new name, Ashlyn McCrary, engraved on the front cover.

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

We got married at Vestavia Hills Methodist Church and had our reception in the ballroom of Vestavia Country Club. Once the reception came to a close, we had planned with the band to send our guests out to the front of VCC to get ready for the sendoff and have the ballroom empty for one last dance–just Jackson and me.

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

One detail I loved was the entrance table to the ballroom. My mom had framed wedding photos of both Jackson’s parents and grandparents and mine on our families’ individual wedding days. Lillie Janes Florals added greenery and small flowers around the photos, and the table sat right in front of our wedding cake.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

Ryan and I met through mutual friends in Birmingham. I lived in Birmingham, and he lived in Montgomery at the time. We got to know each other more by texting and FaceTiming before he finally asked me out. We went on our first official date to a Montgomery Biscuits game and spent the whole game talking and laughing.

THE PROPOSAL

I was visiting Ryan in Montgomery, and we were planning on going to our favorite restaurant with friends to celebrate my law school graduation. Ryan is also an attorney and said he needed to drop something off at the Alabama State Capitol before dinner. He asked me to come with him, and I agreed. He proposed in front of the beautiful capitol building, and I was so surprised! I was so excited to go celebrate with our Montgomery friends, but little did I know, Ryan also figured out how to get all of our friends and family from all over the Southeast to Montgomery to celebrate our engagement.

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

Our favorite moment was walking into the reception tent for the first time as the band introduced us as husband and wife. It was magical, seeing the tent lit up with twinkling lights under the night sky as our dearest family and friends greeted us underneath.

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

Our favorite wedding detail was the live event painting that my parents and sister gifted us. All of the guests enjoyed watching the watercolor come to life throughout the course of the night, and it is the most special keepsake of the best day of our lives. The artist who painted our portrait live, Sherri Arias, was my art teacher at Vestavia Hills Elementary Liberty Park. It was a full-circle moment for all of us!

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We both grew up in Vestavia and first met in the same fourth-grade class. We became good friends while in high school and remained friends throughout college, although he attended Alabama and I attended Auburn. We started dating in 2018 when we both moved back to Birmingham for work.

THE PROPOSAL

To me it seemed like a typical, fall Friday night date. We went to dinner at one of our favorite restaurants. Little did I know he had transformed the backyard of my home with string lights, candles and a nice fire. His plans were almost ruined when I kept insisting we go to a party for a friend. I was completely surprised when he asked me to marry him, and of course, I said yes! We ended the night at a celebration with our family and friends that he secretly arranged.

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

Our favorite moment was taking communion together during the ceremony. It meant so much to begin our lives as husband and wife with such a grace-filled and intentional moment.

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

My grandmother used the lace from the wedding dress worn by both my mother and aunt to sew to the hem of my wedding veil. It meant the world to me, knowing I had something with me from their weddings that my grandmother so thoughtfully and meticulously made.

Spring Retreats

Lake, Mountains, Beach

contributed

There is nothing like a big event – a wedding, a reunion, an anniversary - to inspire a fun getaway.

This spring, we are celebrating weddings and anniversaries, graduations and milestones achieved. And if we are honest, there is so much work that goes into planning these big events. It can feel like we’ve run a race when we finally get here. After all, what mother-of-the-bride hasn’t wished for her own weeklong-honeymoon-style getaway after helping to execute her daughter’s dream wedding? And to be sure, before we even get to the big celebrations, there are lots of smaller ones along the way: bridesmaids trips, groomsmen getaways, planning excursions and site visits for parties. We’ve selected three of our favorite locations which might just fit the bill for anything you have planned this spring. With destinations at the lake, the beach and in the mountains, there is a little something for everyone. Of course, you might just have to hit all three. They’re all very special!

HIT THE ROAD

A Little Something for Everyone

An Active Retreat

Just a short drive on I-20 from Birmingham, Reynolds Lake Oconee has been drawing Magic City visitors for years. Long known for its exceptional golf program and stunning setting on Lake Oconee, this Ritz-Carlton resort has something for everyone. The five-story property has rooms and suites of various sizes to accommodate a variety of guests, but larger parties may choose to book one of the six separate cottages that front the lake itself. Imagine settling in with your best girlfriends for a weekend of wedding planning and spa visits. For those who live, eat and breathe the pursuit of that small, white ball, there are four other suites which overlook The Oconee Golf Course, one of five worldclass courses on property.

Lake: Reynolds Lake Oconee Greensboro, Georgia

Ready, Aim, Shoot!

Beyond spa and golf, Reynolds Lake Oconee has expanded its recreational offerings to include tri-toon boat rentals, water skis, Jet Ski, paddle boarding, wakeboarding and canoe rentals. One of the more recent additions to this property is Sandy Creek Sporting Grounds, which is nestled into 100-acres of pristine East Georgia countryside. Great Britain’s internationally-acclaimed shooting champion Justin Jones and his team have worked tirelessly to develop the property and make it a luxurious, world-class shooting destination. Sandy Creek features a 20-station sporting clays course, five-stand shooting range and sporting clays. Women make up the fastest-growing sector of the shooting market, so even if you’ve never picked up a 20-gauge shotgun before, we challenge you to try your hand at this sport. It is thrilling!

Fine Dining

Of course, no getaway would be complete without great food, and this is one more way Reynolds Lake Oconee shines. There are a number of on-site restaurants that can be intimate respites for two, or host a large group of revelers. Book one of the cottages, and you can have chef-driven meals brought to your own private domain and never lift a finger.

Make It Permanent

Once your celebration or honeymoon has ended, you may find yourself not wanting to leave Reynolds. That is just the way they like it! Recent years have seen a huge rise in permanent relocation to the area where homesites have been selling like hotcakes. The development of the residential side of Lake Oconee has been one founded upon intention and authentic hospitality like no other. There is character and community here that has drawn new full-time residents who cherish being active and being taken care of in a naturally-wondrous setting. You may come for a weekend but end up staying for a lifetime.

Mountaintop Escape Retreat in the Peaks

Located in the heart of Western North Carolina, The Swag is a storied property with a history of hospitality and a warm embrace of its environs. First established as the private retreat for Deener and Dan Matthews and their friends and family, The Swag is named for that part of the landscape where two mountains come together. That physical act of coming together is the foundation for what this property is all about.

A Breath of Fresh Air

Let’s start by saying this: take note of the temperature gauge on your car when you first turn onto The Swag’s driveway. As you make the 15-minute drive up the mountain, crossing the terrain on switchbacks, you can watch the temperature drop degree-by-degree. Better yet, just roll down the windows and let that fresh mountain air erase whatever cares you may have inadver-

tently brought along on this getaway. We promise that by the time you arrive at the welcome reception area, your breathing will become deeper and your smile will become wider.

Next-Gen Caretakers

As only the second stewards of this property, Annie and David Colquitt –themselves long time guests at The Swag before purchasing the property – built this welcome area as a way to set the tone for what is to come.

Get Out There

Atop the mountain lies the main guest lodge where you’ll gather each afternoon for a pre-prandial cocktail or enjoy a repast with other guests. Just across the driveway of the 250-acre property is a long, seemingly endless, rustic wooden fence which is all that

separates guests from the wonder of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). Pause for a moment to take in the chatter of woodland life, feel the cool and earthy breeze that comes whispering through the centuries-old growth. This may be just the setting you desire for a honeymoon or a relaxed couples retreat.

Feeling Cozy

Rooms are available in the lodge’s main Swag House, where Deener and Dan once had rooms for each of their children to come and visit. These are spacious mountaintop rooms with truly elegant amenities not often found at this altitude. One of the most coveted rooms might be the one with the large copper tub on the porch. Picture yourself taking in the moonrise, enveloped in and sipping on bubbles. Adjacent Chestnut Lodge features five other spaces while seven cabins and suites across the property provide truly intimate privacy. The Balsam Cottage is one of our personal favorites with fireplaces, a sauna, an outdoor shower and soaking tub, beckoning you after a long hike.

The Great Smokies Daytime on the mountain is your time – hours to explore the GSMNP on foot, with or without a guide, like one of the experts-in-residence who have been coming to the property for years. You may choose to amble down the lawn to one of the nooks tucked into the rhododendron-lined hillside, taking along the lunch that the kitchen made for you this morning. Or, stake your claim on a rocking chair on the porch, cracking open a new hardback, losing count of all the hummingbirds that also call The Swag home.

More To Do

The Colquitts recognized and relished the respite of The Swag, having been guests and friends of the Matthews for so many years. But, in taking the reins of ownership, they have endeavored to add even more luxury to the mountaintop: adding a spa, fitness center, wine and cocktail tastings, as well as a soaking pool with breathtaking views of the area. Tours of the garden on site are rounded out with cocktail-crafting classes where guests are invited to try their hand at mixology. Stave puzzles have always been standard fireside entertainment here and continue to be a cherished afternoon activity. theswag.com

A Hotel with a Romantic Past

Sugar White Sands

For some, there is no getaway like a beach getaway. We get that. For those folks, we suggest something different than your typical 30-A trip: The Hotel Don CeSar in St. Petersburg, Florida. Also known as The Pink Palace, this grand hotel sits majestically on the sugar-white sands of St. Pete, just a short drive from the Tampa airport.

Pink Palace History

The Don (as it is also known) enjoys a rich romantic past that is honored still today. Real estate tycoon Thomas Rowe built the resort in the height of the Great Gatsby era of 1928, as a tribute to the love of his life. The property attracted a number of notable guests, including F. Scott Fitzgerald himself and was quite the destination in its heyday before Rowe’s untimely death in 1940. Two years later, the United States Army purchased the property and used it as a place for returning WWII injured airmen to convalesce. After that, the hotel languished for several years before a group of investors lovingly brought it back to life.

Beach: Hotel Don CeSar

St. Petersburg, Florida

Revelers Welcomed

Now a member of the National Trust’s Historic Hotels of America, much of the era’s panache can be felt in every corner of the hotel – from the vaulted ceilings of the marble-clad lobby to the wide breezeways to the guest rooms that feel very nautical in detail. There are grand ballrooms for large parties and sweeping vistas that recall that bygone era of grandeur. The hotel hosts weddings year-round where the Pink Palace feels like a de facto member of the party. While the hotel’s spa and idyllic beach setting are enough to keep guests on property, it would be a shame to miss some of the other fun things to do in the area.

Dreamland

In fact, take a page from New York Times’ best-selling author, Nicholas Sparks, who set his most recent romantic novel, Dreamland, at the Don CeSar, a site he visits yearly and has great affection for. The main characters of the novel, Morgan and Colby, engage all of St. Pete as the backdrop to their own love story – kayaking in clear-bottomed boats amongst the mangroves and spending stretches of time at the acclaimed Salvador Dali museum – which might just inspire a little romance of your own. doncesar.com

Good News before the Shutdown

A National School of Character

Most people will never forget March 13, 2020–the day the world shut down. However, I remember something special that happened before the chaos. It was the day Vestavia Hills Elementary Cahaba Heights had a visitor from character.org. Later on, our school received a sweet surprise when we learned (while being at home during the pandemic) that our school earned the national award for character education.

Vestavia Hills’ Favorites

Choosing a favorite dish might be a challenge because I frequent many of the restaurants in Vestavia Hills. I love a good brunch on Saturday mornings. Most recently, I discovered Cala Coffee in Cahaba Heights. For lunch or dinner, I could eat a chicken feast from Tazikis or The Senator sandwich from Diplomat Deli on repeat.

The Teaching Community

Vestavia Hills

Educators

It is my joy to serve alongside teachers and staff who work tirelessly to invest in our next generation. Kim Hauser took a chance on me as a new assistant principal coming out of the classroom in 2013. Now, I so enjoy working with this admin dream team: Jason Bostic, Ashley Perry, Donna Morgan and the whole Pizitz crew.

Spending Time with Loved Ones

The Biggest Cheerleader

Outside of spending time at school, I like to join my family in cheering on my nieces and nephew at their events. This might mean you will find me at a local school gym for basketball, Wald Park for swim or the Central Fields for soccer. It is a blessing to have family right down the road from me in Vestavia Hills.

Enjoying Nature

The Beauty in the “Hills”

I enjoy being outdoors. Saturday and Sunday afternoons are the perfect time to meet a friend to go walk all those hills in the nearby neighborhoods. If a friend isn’t free, I will put on a good podcast or audiobook. If I have time for a longer walk, I enjoy walking Vestavia Drive that overlooks the city. It is a beautiful view and reminds me of God’s goodness on display.
