THE COVER

Amazing Flowers & Occasions is transforming the floral business by putting customers’ needs first.

GGrowing up in the Deep South, one of the tricks I’ve picked up is knowing when it’ll rain, just by the smell of the sultry air. I can tell you just how much a “dash,” a “pinch” or a “smidgen” is and how much you’ll need of each to make cornbread and grits. Sometimes, I can even tell by one’s drawl which state they call home.

One of my childhood best friends is marrying a Texan this summer, and she’s already called me all excited about one thing in particular: the heat index. Little did this Alabamian realize that out West, the heat is arid and dry, meaning the lack of humidity allows one to sweat and cool off more easily. When the air is wet and moist, it makes it harder for one to sweat, making the canicular days’ temps feel hotter than they are.

It’s sweet, to me, seeing her chase love across the country and find community with her now-husband hundreds of miles away, and yet, she still phones home right before it rains.

Talking with Eric Pippert, co-founder of Creekside BBQ, he reminded me that Texas is not too different from Alabama. Both states do two things well: barbecue and hospitality. When he curated the menu at Creekside, he became inspired by chefs all over the Southeast, later deciding to make pulled pork “Eastern Carolina-style” and dry-rub ribs the “Memphis” way.

To the Texans reading this letter from the editor, yes, you all do brisket best.

While food connects many Southerners together, I believe it is fellowship that sets us apart from many other people groups in the nation. Sasha Johns, owner of Amazing Flowers & Occasions, will tell you that “loving where others are at” is what keeps her business’ doors open.

Weddings, funerals, anniversaries–Sasha creates floral arrangements that transcend words. After navigating a tough “180” in her life, she found healing in her church community, later taking over ownership of the flower shop and helping others heal through her business.

Right across from her on Main Street in Columbiana, The Farm Company’s owners Tiger and Cathy Hitt can attest to community being what makes Columbiana–and their town of residence, Shelby–the best places to live and raise a family.

In this issue, you will get to read just how community plays a part in each of their journeys. For some, finding community meant finding healing; for others, that meant learning to love after loss. Nonetheless, community is at the heart of each person’s story, and each person pays tribute to Shelby County for helping them find as much.

Happy reading, folks,

HARROWED TALES

Inspired by Aubrey Hill’s childhood, “Moon Hollow” transforms a mysterious encounter into a gripping thriller.

PHOTOS BY JAMES

AAubrey Hill never set out to be a novelist. But one fall morning in 2015, deep in Alabama’s Talladega National Forest, the 72-year-old retired scientist stumbled upon something strange: a tall wooden cross in the middle of nowhere, marked with the words “Don Moon Hollow,” where the name for the novel originated.

Months later, a game camera he had placed in the area captured images of a young woman walking through the same remote woods alone. She appeared again the next morning, wearing different clothes, then vanished.

“That’s when I knew I had to write,” Aubrey says. “I couldn’t stop wondering, ‘What was she doing out there?’”

That question became the seed for “Moon Hollow,” a fictional thriller set in the wilds of Alabama and steeped in the mystery that begs to be unraveled. It’s not Aubrey’s first novel, but it’s the one that fully bloomed from decades of memory,

curiosity and a life lived between microscopes and magnolias.

Aubrey grew up in Yazoo City, Mississippi, on the edge of the Delta.

“You come down out of the hills, and suddenly, the land flattens like a tabletop,” he recalls. “We had the best of both worlds: rolling hills to explore and the endless Delta. It was a boy’s paradise.”

Aubrey and his friends roamed freely, swimming in creeks, hunting squirrels and mining riverbeds for fossils and arrowheads.

Yazoo City—then a tidy American town of 12,000—offered freedom and familiarity. Aubrey remembers his childhood with a wistful fondness.

“It was the kind of place where we could walk down Main Street with shotguns after hunting, and no one batted an eye,” he says. “People just asked if we caught anything.”

Aubrey’s path from boyhood to authorship wasn’t linear. He studied microbiology and chemistry at

Pictured are Aubrey and Donna Hill.

Mississippi State University, earning both his bachelor’s and his master’s degrees. He briefly pursued a doctoral degree at the University of Texas. When that didn’t pan out, Aubrey returned home and took a job at Mississippi Chemical, a fertilizer company where he met his wife, a fellow chemist.

“We literally mixed and analyzed chemicals in the same lab,” he jokes.

After a decade there, Aubrey pivoted again. Realizing microbiology jobs were scarce in Mississippi, he earned a second master’s degree in computer science from Jackson State University.

This move launched his tech career and brought him to Birmingham in 1988 with his young family. He spent 12 years at BellSouth before transitioning to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he worked on a Ph.D. in computer science, served as director of the Bioinformatics Shared Facility and taught bioinformatics in the computer science

department.

Throughout these career shifts, Aubrey nurtured a love for the natural world. In retirement, that love turned reflective.

“I started hunting again, but not how I used to,” he says. “Now, it was more about being outdoors. The quiet. The space to think.”

During these quiet walks, the images for “Moon Hollow” began to form. Aubrey self-published the novel in 2024.

“You used to need a publisher, an agent, all that,” he says. “Now, if you’ve got a story, a computer and a little patience, you can do it.”

The novel follows two sisters, Beth and Nan, who live on inherited land surrounded by the national forest. When hunters begin disappearing in the woods, Beth finds herself drawn into a dark and tangled mystery.

The story is fictional, but its roots—the cross, the game camera and the setting—are grounded in

Aubrey’s real-world wanderings.

“The plot came from one question: Why was she in the woods?” he says.

From there, the characters grew naturally.

“I’d write a scene, then ask, ‘What happens next?’ The story built itself,” he says.

Aubrey describes his writing process as unfolding, intuitive, persistent and surprisingly satisfying.

“There are no deadlines, no pressure,” he says. “I’d work on it, set it aside and come back. The hardest part was filling in the middle. I tend to be too concise.”

To combat that, he drew more from his past and honed in on the details of the characters and the setting. His experiences exploring creeks, collecting fossils and roaming forest trails wove themselves into the scenes.

The woods in “Moon Hollow” aren’t just a setting—they’re a character of their own, full of eerie presence and emotional memory.

WHERE TO FIND “MOON HOLLOW”

Those interested can purchase paperback copies of “Moon Hollow” or digital copies in Kindle format on Amazon by searching “Moon Hollow Aubrey Hill.”

Friends and early readers offered feedback as the book neared completion.

“I asked people I trusted to read it: classmates, old friends, folks from home,” Aubrey says. “They gave me great insight, and more than that, they encouraged me.”

In addition to writing, Aubrey still regularly ventures into the forested landscapes that inspired his fiction. He shares that he and his brother often return to Piney Creek in Yazoo County to search for fossils and arrowheads, just like they did in their youth.

“There’s something comforting about that continuity,” he says. “It’s the same land, the same quiet, only now I see stories everywhere.”

Aubrey is also candid about technology’s role in shaping his second act as a writer.

“Word processors and digital publishing changed everything for people like me,” he explains. “I couldn’t have done this with

From the first page to the last. I had an idea, and I saw it through.
-Aubrey Hill

a typewriter and carbon paper. Revising, fixing and building made writing accessible in a whole new way.”

What matters most to Aubrey isn’t fame or sales. It’s the joy of having finished something.

“I’m proud of it,” he says. “It’s the kind of book I would read. And that cross, that girl, they’re still in my head.”

Aubrey’s story is also one of perseverance and technological empowerment in a publishing world dominated by agents and big-name presses.

“I couldn’t have done this 20 years ago,” he says. “But now, anyone serious and willing to work at it can get their book out there.”

When asked what he appreciates most about the final product, Aubrey doesn’t hesitate to say: “That I did it. From the first page to the last. I had an idea, and I saw it through.”

For readers craving a mystery rooted in Southern soil, “Moon Hollow” offers a tale as haunting as the woods that inspired it. It is a quiet, powerful reminder that stories often begin in the most unexpected places.

MYLES MORGAN

THE MUSIC MAKER

SStrumming his first guitar chord ignited a musical journey Myles Morgan never thought he’d travel. He was a baseball player from little league all the way through high school. “This is a trajectory I never thought I’d be on,” Myles says. “I was dead set on playing baseball, but God put me on a path I really didn’t expect. I’m just along for the ride.” That ride, in just a few short years, has taken Myles from playing summer restaurant gigs at Ginny Lane at The Wharf to headlining his first show at Soul Kitchen Music Hall in Mobile. “That was incredible to headline for the first time at Soul Kitchen,” Myles mused. “Another of my favorite spots to play is at the Flora-Bama. It’s a great place with a lot of history. It’s an honor to play there.”

In his short time on the scene, Myles has covered a lot of country music making ground. Garnering inspiration from Post Malone, whom he met last year at The Wharf, Morgan Wallen and Riley Green, Myles says his understanding of music starts with resonating with others. “Past experiences inspire me. I like to go on the back porch and just write about relatable experiences. Like my song, ‘Is This Seat Taken,’ that song is about how I met my girlfriend at an Alabama football game,” he says, later adding, “right after I started playing guitar, I went to a Riley Green concert. It gave me a lot of inspiration. His show gave me hope that I could do this.”

I’m down to see where God takes me. If that’s a stadium tour, I am not afraid to play on a bigger stage. I want to take my music as far as I can take it.
-Myles Morgan

Cultivating that Myles Morgan sound, fans will hear influences from older to newer musical stylings. “I love all kinds of music. You’ll also hear Post Malone influences in my music. Anything from EDM to old country. It’s all molded me into a blend of different things,” Myles says.

As for what separates Myles from all the other artists, it’s nothing but good, old fashioned hard work. “That’s all everything’s about, work harder than other people and keeping God first is the reason why I’m doing any of this. July 18, 2025, I’m headlining at Iron City in Birmingham,” he says. “You can expect an insanely fun, engaging show and by the end of the concert, you’ll be a Myles Morgan fan.” Striving to take his career as far as he can, Myles welcomes the chance to win audiences over in larger venues. “I’m down to see where God takes me. If that’s a stadium tour, I am not afraid to play on a bigger stage. I want to take my music as far as I can take it,” he says.

Once walking up to Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train” as he approached the plate, Myles now walks in with his own tunes. In fact, his sixth single, “I Still Got It,” recently dropped, and he is working on his first EP

with Morgan Wallen’s lead guitarist Dominic Frost.

In an industry where great lyrics can deliver the quintessential country song, Myles believes what makes a good country song is connection. “It has to have some sort of meaning to it, a connection with a deeper meaning or lesson in it somewhere,” he says.

Paraphrasing his own lyrics from the song, “Jon Boat or a Yacht,” Myles says, “It doesn’t matter to me if I have a jon boat or a yacht, life is about having people that you love, and if you’re happy with that, that’s what matters.”

Preparing for the road ahead, Myles shares what music means to him. “Music means the world to me! This is where God’s put me, and I’m here to see why He wants me to do it. He put this career in my life, and I am just trying to learn more every day and figure out why He chose me to be here.”

Myles has taken the country music world by storm, and there’s no sign of slowing him down. He has just signed with WME Agency, which is the home of top talent like Chris Stapleton, Miranda Lambert, Tucker Wetmore and Muscadine Bloodline. He started his summer by kicking off CMA Fest 2025 in Nashville and then took the stage in front of 30,000 fans at the Carolina Country Music Festival in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Myles is returning home where it all started to headline Iron City Bham on Friday, July 18. Tickets are available on Ticketmaster.com. A new show has also been added for Myles with Muscadine Bloodline at Sand Mountain Amphitheater on Friday, Aug. 22.

Recommendations from Candra Shockley

Librarian at the Albert L. Scott Library

The

Facemaker:

Candra Shockley has been the cataloging librarian for the Albert L. Scott Library in Alabaster for the past eight years. As a collaborative effort between the library and Siluria Brewing Company, she is also the host of Books and Brews, a monthly book club that meets at the brewery. Here, her selections vary across historical topics that, while taking readers to the past, simultaneously parallel modern times.

A Visionary Surgeon’s Battle to Mend the Disfigured Soldiers of World War I

This novel tells the story of pioneering plastic surgeon Harold Gillies and his quest to repair the battered faces of World War I soldiers. Full of social history, war history and medical history, “The Facemaker” is engaging and expertly written. Readers will be amazed at the medical advancements of this era. In Candra’s current top 10 of “must-reads,” it is her Books and Brews book club’s pick for September.

The Education of Corporal John Musgrave: Vietnam and its Aftermath

This biography follows young Marine John Musgrave from boot camp, to Vietnam and, upon his return, to his involvement with fellow veterans to end the war. A history of Vietnam, the 1960s and a coming-of-age story, this biography is a window to a turbulent time in more recent American history. It is reminiscent of classic Vietnam memoirs such as Philip Caputo’s “A Rumor of War.”

Carville’s Cure: Leprosy, Stigma, and the Fight for Justice

“Carville’s Cure” was Candra’s Books and Brews’ pick for this past February. A unique and overlooked aspect of history, it is a social and medical history of leprosy, now known as Hansen’s disease, and the quest to find a cure. The book follows the stories of people afflicted with a then-incurable disease and their experiences in Louisiana at a sanitorium specifically for leprosy patients. The fight for care and the advocacy for patients’ inclusion in society reveals a surprising Alabama connection. If readers enjoyed “The Radium Girls” by Kate Moore, they will enjoy “Carville’s Cure.”

The Deerfield Massacre: A Surprise Attack and the Fight for Survival in Early America

This novel is a thrilling account of the infamous massacre in Deerfield, Massachusetts, in 1704, where Native Americans attacked a colonial settlement and kidnapped its survivors. Marched to Canada, the survivors were eventually ransomed by the governor of Massachusetts. James details the night of the attack and the subsequent journey to Canada, as well as the rebuilding of Deerfield by survivors. It is an important piece of colonial history of which “The Old Indian Door” still survives.

‘Tis Not Our War: Avoiding Military Service in the Civil War North

This novel provides insight on the Civil War, focusing on the North and the willingness, or lack thereof, of soldiers to participate. Well-researched and brimming with primary sources such as letters, military records and first-hand accounts, this book tells why soldiers chose to fight—or not to fight. The reasons soldiers had for joining the war are revealed to be complex and not always altruistic. Candra considers this read to be essential in fully understanding an often over-simplified and divisive time in American history.

SCHOOL SPORTS&

FLIPPING EXPECTATIONS

Inspired by her lifelong love of the sport, Sara Beth Gilbert’s gymnastics studio welcomes all ages.

PHOTOS

WWhen Sara Beth Gilbert moved to Chelsea in 2017, she wasn’t planning to open a gymnastics studio. She was simply looking for a place to enroll her 4-year-old twins in a sport that had shaped her own childhood.

“I went to enroll them in gymnastics because I wanted them to experience the same benefits I had, knowing they would become strong and independent individuals,” she says. “But there was no gymnastics in our town.”

That realization sparked a vision that quickly grew. Seven months later, she launched her first, small gymnastics classes at the local community center. By August 2018, she opened a permanent facility under the moniker, Sara Beth’s Gymnasts — and by 2020, she expanded again into a 2,800-square-foot studio.

Today, after seven-and-a-half years in business, Sara Beth’s Gymnasts is a thriving hub, offering a diverse range of programs.

Her studio welcomes toddlers and preschoolers in classes such as Parent and Tot Gymnastics, Preschool Gymnastics and Homeschool Gymnastics. For the more adventurous, there are Ninja Preschool and Ninja programs and Pre-Team and Team Gymnastics split into Copper, Girls and Boys teams.

Adult gymnasts aren’t left out, either. With dedicated Adult Gymnastics, Adult Team Gymnastics, Tumbling, Cheer and Tumbling and even a Junior Coaching Program open to people of all ages and abilities, options are widespread.

Sara Beth started gymnastics as a child and began coaching at just 12 years old.

“I was very passionate about gymnastics. I loved my time there and would have stayed all day, every day if I could,” she says. “In high school, when people asked what I wanted to do, I’d say, ‘I’m already doing it. I want to coach gymnastics.’”

She continued coaching through college while studying computer science at Jacksonville State

University, choreographing routines and leading cheer and gymnastics programs. After graduation, she spent 12 years in the software industry as a technical writer. However, the call of the gym never faded.

“I missed it tremendously. It was really hard living without all of that in my life,” she says.

Eventually, she left her desk job and returned to aquatics, launching a swim safety business while raising her twins. When the family moved to Chelsea, she was surprised to find no gymnastics options for her kids and decided to change that.

Starting Sara Beth’s Gymnasts came with obstacles such as the equipment cost.

“Gymnastics equipment is very expensive, so I searched high and low for deals on good conditionused equipment,” Sara Beth says. “I made road trips all over Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, the Carolinas for pommel horses, Arkansas for a vaulting table and even 12 hours to Oklahoma for parallel bars.”

However, the program kept growing rapidly.

Today, Sara Beth’s Gymnasts offers classes for all ages and skill levels, including a rare adult gymnastics program.

“When I left the sport to use my computer science degree, there was no place for adult gymnasts,” she says. “Gyms were not open to having an adult train or practice. That made me very sad.”

Determined to change that, she now welcomes students from toddlers to adults, with some participants in their 40s. Her philosophy is rooted in inclusion, empowerment and growth.

“All of our classes are very personalized for the individuals,” she says. “As they perform a skill well, we introduce a new progression, drill or element to advance that skill.”

She challenges the belief that gymnastics is only for kids.

“I tell people gymnastics is for anyone who wants to do it,” she says. “You don’t have to be a high-level

athlete to enjoy or benefit from the sport. You’re never too old to do gymnastics.”

Her adult students agree — some have even described gymnastics as a form of therapy.

“They look forward to it and tell their friends how much they love it,” Sara Beth says. “One adult recently thanked me for this opportunity because gymnastics is fun with us. She says if it was like that when she was young, she may have continued.”

Among her proudest moments is coaching her son in boys’ gymnastics — a discipline that includes six apparatuses, compared to four in girls’ events.

“I had to learn four additional events that are extremely different,” she says. “It’s an ongoing process — I’m in a constant state of learning to support his training.”

Her son, Zachary, has since become a multi-time state champion, regional medalist and an Alabama State Elite Team member.

“It’s amazing how well he does given my limited experience in men’s gymnastics,” Sara Beth says. “We must be doing something right.”

While gymnastics builds strength and skills, she believes its

deeper power is what it gives to the person.

“We’re developing the whole person — their minds as well as their bodies,” she says. “You can’t be brave unless you are confident, and they go hand in hand.”

That mission drives everything from how classes are run to how staff are trained and students are celebrated.

“I feel like that makes them much happier and a lot more proud,” she says. “They learn that they can do hard things.”

Sara Beth’s Gymnasts is also a connector — bringing together neighbors, families and even

different generations.

“Gymnastics does not have age limits or constraints. It is what connects us,” she says. “When we ordinarily may not connect outside of the gym, it is where we understand each other.”

Despite the constant demands behind the scenes, she continues to dream big. Her long-term goal is to build a permanent, multisport facility in Chelsea.

With plans for future expansion, Sara Beth’s focus remains steady: providing a space where anyone, from toddlers to adults, can move, learn and thrive.

As the Dog Days of Summer commence, Brii Wykoff, founder of Body by Brii Female Only Fitness Studio, recommends staying hydrated and eating three-to-five meals a day to boost metabolism and maximize one’s fitness goals. Having won first runner-up for “Best Personal Trainer” in Shelby Living’s 2025 Best of the Best contest, she believes living healthily starts with becoming active–and one of the best times to get in shape is in the summer. Here, she details her favorite “get fit” tips to feeling one’s best this season.

How did you decide to become a personal trainer?

I didn’t exactly pursue becoming a personal trainer until I hired one for myself and saw the impact it had on my life. I started working out as a way to heal emotionally, mentally and physically. Somewhere along the way, I realized that fitness wasn’t just changing my body. It was changing how I saw myself. I was gaining confidence and knew I wanted to provide that same opportunity for transformation to other women as well. So, I turned my own pain and growth into purpose, and 12 years later, here we are.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your career?

The gratification that comes with knowing I get to play a role in someone rewriting their story is amazing! Knowing that I helped create a space where they felt safe enough to discover confidence will forever be something I cherish. It’s not always about the reps and the results; it’s about helping someone remember who she is and what she’s capable of.

Is “physical fitness” a blanket term, or does it look different for each person?

Physical fitness absolutely looks different to each person. The women that come to my gym have different stories, different needs and different goals. For some, it’s about building muscle or losing weight. For others, it’s about mobility or having more energy. That’s why I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all membership. Everyone is at a different place in their fitness journey, and I want to provide a membership option that meets them right where they are, so they can reach their goals while avoiding injury or getting discouraged.

What is your favorite workout to do or to teach, and what are its benefits?

My favorite type of workout to both do and teach is strength training, handsdown. Not only is it one of the most effective ways to build muscle and create a toned and defined look, but it also has so many health benefits. Strength training boosts metabolism, supports bone health, contributes to longevity and overall quality

of life, especially as we age. Strength training is the number-one contributor to the results my clients see at my gym.

What do you hope your clients gain both physically and emotionally by attending your training sessions?

My goal isn’t just to help women look strong. I want to help them feel strong, inside and out. I want them to feel a confidence that doesn’t just end when the workout does. I know what it feels like to second guess your worth or diminish your value to make others more comfortable. My hopes are that the women who work out at my gym are able to experience changes that go far beyond the mirror. I want them to feel stronger, not just in their workouts, but in everyday life, too.

Body by Brii Female Only Fitness Studio is located at 48 Chesser Crane Road, Suite A, in Chelsea. It is open Monday-Thursday, 5 a.m.-6:30 p.m.; Friday, 5 a.m. to noon; and Saturday, 7-9 a.m. For more information, or to contact Brii Wykoff about personal training, visit bodybybrii.com.

FOOD DRINK&

BONDED BY BARBECUE

Eric Pippert’s culinary journey led him to open Creekside BBQ, which serves more than good food.

PHOTOS BY JAMES CULVER & KEITH MCCOY

CCruising down Interstate 65, Eric Pippert cranks up the tunes bellowing from his FM radio. Up before daybreak, he rolls into Creekside BBQ’s parking lot for another day of “living the dream.”

With a pep in his step, he hustles to the door, feeling the weight of his keys jingling in his pocket. He tosses them lightly in the air before catching them in his palm, thumbing around for the shiny silver one.

Unlocking the door, strolling inside, he flips on the light and smiles–it’s showtime.

Hours dwindle by as he fires up the smoker, whose fiery embers lick up slabs of oak and hickory burning in the hearth. Before long, passersby down I-65 can smell the aromatic wafts curling up through the restaurant’s chimney, billowing over the roadways in a cloud of sweet scented heaven.

Whiffs of tender, juicy pork bellies and slabs of ribs slow-cooking in the 4,000-pound smoker invoke mouthwatering sensations strong enough to cause drivers to exit off onto Cahaba Valley Road, turn at the bustling intersection’s light and pull

straight into the niche, little parking space in front of the smokehouse.

The top of the 11 o’clock hour dawns, and swarms of customers pour in towards the register, with the line peeling out the door. The sound of sizzling patties frying under coats of melting cheese and drooping fried eggs promises big orders–more than 100 of these burgers could be whipped up by the end of the day.

Whether sitting indoors along the perimeter windows or outback on the deck, customers chow down hungrily on Texas-style brisket or Eastern Carolina-inspired pulled pork sandwiches. The ribs–best sampled dry with a seasoned rub Memphis natives would be proud of–remain a crowd favorite.

Yet, anything goes well under a drizzle of that luscious, velvety Alabama white sauce.

Making his rounds, Eric checks on every table, taking a moment to relish in each customer’s company with a hearty smile. He chuckles, watching even the tiniest diners manhandle the menu’s beast

happens Amazing

of a sandwich–the Smash Burger.

No matter their age, customers young and young-at-heart all seem to bond over one thing: the hallmark of good barbecue.

BLAZING TRAILS

A Virginia native, Eric spent the majority of his youth in North Carolina and since has lived in Maryland, Texas and Tennessee before finding “home” in the Yellowhammer state. He was first bitten by the restaurant bug while working at Sekisui in Huntersville, North Carolina.

When people with extraordinary talent and passion are given the technology, the facilities, and the support, they achieve great things. The discoveries taking place today will help shape the future of treatments and lead to cures – benefitting not only our patients and families, but people across the country and around the world for years to come.

Then the ripe, old age of 19, Eric laughs, saying serving tables quickly turned into his sneaking in the back kitchen, eventually finding work on the cook line.

“I realized that what people are in a restaurant for is the food,” he says.

Time soon whisked him away to Asheville, where he first began learning the ins and outs of running a restaurant at The Corner Kitchen. This prompted him to study at Le Cordon Bleu in Austin, Texas; although, he credits his real-world experience behind-thescenes as the foundation for his culinary expertise.

Afterwards, he found himself working in the kitchen at St. John’s Restaurant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He caught the attention of owner Daniel Lindley, who promoted him to chef de cuisine at Alleia.

For a few years, life was swell, as Eric likes to say. Yet, working for another did not lend itself to the creative challenges he sought that only entrepreneurship could provide.

Enter stage right–the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, restaurants were closing left and right, and Eric found himself with time on his hands.

He reconnected with a mutual friend, and together, they decided to create a barbecue joint. Funnily enough, the one food industry Eric had not worked in was the South’s most famous–barbecue.

Nonetheless, the dynamic duo opened Creekside BBQ in November 2021 in the former Waffle House space off of Oak Mountain Park Road in Pelham. Since day one, Eric says this has been a dream come true.

FRIENDS, FIRE & FORKS

Barbecue may have a lot of well-known, popular dishes, but it takes time and effort to perfect each one of which Southerners’ expectations stand tall.

“What I love about barbecue is that you can [create] a quality product at a fast pace, where you get real scratch cooking happening,” Eric says. “We make everything in-house here.”

From the burgers to the ribs to the sauces–even the ranch dressing–Creekside BBQ makes every item on the menu fresh. What customers will notice most, however, is that every menu item pays homage to various Southern states of which Eric thinks “do barbecue best.”

Nothing, he says, tops Texas brisket. However,

CHEF PICKS

Tennessee–specifcally, Memphis–does the best dry-rub ribs. Living in so many states, Eric says one of the best things to happen to him was being able to curate his own palate for good barbecue–in a nutshell, his own “best of the best.” He may never have worked in a barbecue restaurant before opening his restaurant, but he did know what good barbecue should taste like.

“We smoke the pork belly, then we chill it down, so we can cut portions out of it, but we sear it, we put a fried egg on it, some coleslaw, and so that one right there, you don’t find people eating pork belly every day,” he says. “I think we do a pretty knock-out job of it.”

Reed Anderton, Creekside BBQ’s manager, says his favorite item is the wings.

“The wing sauce that we put on the wings is so packed with flavor, and the wings themselves are, of course, smoked then flash-fried, so there’s just a tasty bite to them,” he says. “When they’re pulled out of the fire, they’ve got that nice crunch on the outside, that nice, smoky flavor on the inside and that sauce is just delicious.”

He believes the menu is the best of any other smokehouse in Alabama. The reasoning, however, may surprise some folks.

Serving food of such a high caliber, he believes, brings the staff together and unites them under one common goal: winning as a team. Creekside BBQ won “Best Barbecue” and “Best Patio Dining” in Shelby Living’s 2025 Best of the Best contest, with these wins just peaking the top of the accolades the business has earned since its inception.

Reed says this win comes as a surprise to no one. The kitchen and front-of-house’s atmosphere is friendly and inviting, and each person is invested in helping the restaurant grow and

maintain its reputation.

“My favorite thing about working here is probably that we’re all more like a family and a unit than as coworkers,” Brandi Robertson, one of Creekside BBQ’s servers, says. “The atmosphere is really good. My first day, I decided this was the place I wanted to be.”

Just as chefs must “respect the animal” when cooking good food, Eric believes they must also respect their staff.

“There’s a lot of love that goes into it,” Eric says, later adding, “to have built a restaurant that’s successful that has a family vibe, I think, is really special.”

When workers feel respected and supported, they

create better food. Why? Food tastes best when cooked by people who love what they do.

Eric invests so heavily in his staff at Creekside BBQ, consistently reminding each person of his purpose and the role he serves in helping the restaurant achieve great feats. To Eric, the relationships he shares with his staff make being in business worthwhile.

Greatness, he says, may taste sweet, but like good barbecue, it is a collective effort that tastes best when shared between friends.

Creekside BBQ is located at 1020 Oak Mountain Park Road in Pelham. It is open Tuesday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. For more information, visit creekside-bbq.com.

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

Ice Cream Lounge

PHOTO CONTRIBUTED

A family-owned business, Cream & Cones Ice Cream Lounge serves 36 different flavors of scooped ice cream, as well as various flavors of rolled ice cream, shaved ice, cotton candy, ice cream sundaes, hamburgers and hotdogs. It is the perfect spot to bring the family to grab a bite to eat–or something sweet–and cool off on a hot summer’s day. Here, owner Matthew Oberlin provides insight on the business’ plethora of flavor profiles.

How did you get your start in the food industry?

My foundation in the food industry began at age 15 and continued through my mid-20s. Over that decade, I gained diverse experience in roles spanning from the front-of- the-house to the back.

Tell our readers about the founding of Cream & Cones Ice Cream Lounge. How did the business originate?

I purchased Cream & Cones, a business that was declining due to poor management. Drawing on my passion for the food industry and love for the classic ice cream shop experience, I completely overhauled the business. We prioritized a welcoming atmosphere, quality products and exceptional customer service. A key part of our mission is giving back by providing free ice cream coupons to local kids through area schools. Thanks to this commitment, Cream & Cones has been transformed into a beloved community staple.

What are the best items to order on the menu?

That’s a tough one! We’re known for our ice cream, so I’d start there. The rolled ice cream is a huge hit to watch, but you can’t go wrong with a scoop in a fresh waffle cone or a classic banana split. If you want to make it a full meal, we also have great burgers and hotdogs— especially the popular chili dog made with our own house-made chili.

For newcomers, which items do you recommend most?

We love welcoming newcomers, and we believe the best experience starts with discovery! We encourage customers to sample our 36 hand-scooped flavors until they find one they absolutely love. From there, they can enjoy their new favorite in a fresh waffle or cookie cone, or make it the star of a decadent sundae, paired with a rich brownie or a slice of creamy cheesecake.

For those with a more eclectic palate, which items or pairings are the most popular?

If you’re feeling adventurous, we have a couple of really fun options. First is the Cotton Candy Burrito—it sounds a little wild, but it’s amazing. We take three scoops of a customer’s favorite ice cream, wrap it in a big cloud of house-made cotton candy (the customer can choose from eight flavors) and then top it with Fruity Pebbles for a bit of crunch. They could go for our Funnel Cake Sundae. It’s a warm, crisp funnel cake just like one would get at the ballpark, and it’s loaded up with ice cream and all the classic toppings.

Cream & Cones is located at 2152 Pelham Parkway, Suite B, in Pelham. It is open Monday-Thursday from noon to 10 p.m.; Friday, noon to midnight; Saturday, 11 a.m. to midnight; and Sunday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. To view the menu or learn more information, visit creamandcones.com.

HOME STYLE&

GOD WINKS

Tiger and Cathy Hitt’s home is a fulfillment of the Lord’s promise over their lives.

PHOTOS BY KESLEA

Face of the Home

Reflecting the family’s heart, this charming bungalow’s façade cleverly blends classic, farmhouse-style architecture with bright hues of yellow and beautiful red, white and blue for an eye-popping curb appeal.

CCrafted by a divine hand, “God winks” happen when one often least expects them in those quiet, serendipitous moments. Those little nudges remind one how loved she is from above. While some call these fate, Cathy Hitt calls them fulfillments.

She jokes that while her first husband may have been her senior prom date, her second husband was actually her junior prom date. She and Tiger Hitt have now celebrated 15 years of joyful union, but their story, she says, the Lord first began writing years prior.

The best of friends, Tiger and Cathy slowly grew apart in high school, later dating other people, graduating and leading separate lives postgraduation. Thirty years passed before they reconnected. Cathy went on to marry her senior prom date, Lee Carter, and they welcomed two sons together. Twenty-six years into their marriage, Lee passed away unexpectedly, devastating the whole town.

It would be years before Cathy would open her heart again to love.

She never advertised herself as “on the market,” in the grief-stricken years following Lee’s passing. She believed if the Lord wanted her to date, He would have to put “the right fella” smack dab in front of her. Well, the year was 2009. Cathy sat in the stands with her sister and friends, cheering on

the McAdory High School Yellowjackets during the homecoming football game. Roaring in on his Harley, Tiger strutted his way up into the stands, sitting down right in front of her.

That first wink, Cathy says, sparked a weeklong conversation that turned into a date to a bonfire and even a ‘80s-themed birthday party, where she and Tiger dressed as prom dates. Cathy even wore her old prom dress–it still fit three decades later.

One day after a scenic motorcycle ride, Tiger helped Cathy off of his bike and said, “What a ride!” Little did he know those same words were inscribed on Lee’s tombstone as a tribute to the life he led. Cathy says she knew then that Lee was looking out for her, and Tiger, in full, “God wink-fashion,” was “the one.” Just three months after their first date, on a Blue Moon on New Year’s Eve, Tiger popped the question, and the rest, as they say, is history.

In 2013, Tiger and Cathy serendipitously toured a house for sale on Lay Lake, immediately falling in love with the property. Over the years, they expanded the home, remodeling their kitchen, master bedroom and bathroom and even adding on an outdoor lounge, too. Today, Cathy believes their home is a fulfillment of God’s promise to her–another “God wink” that wonderful things happen when one waits on the Lord, trusting in His will, not leaning on her own understanding.

Entryway

The entryway’s curated collection of books, photographs and memorabilia transcends generations and offers a welcoming preview for the rest of the home.

The “Americana” Room

One of Cathy’s proudest moments in buying this house was handing her father, Joseph Biddy, a key, saying he would always be loved and taken care of in her new home. This room is dedicated to her parents and is decorated with lots of familial memorabilia, such as her grandmother Ila Mae Sims’ handmade quilts.

These vintage plates are from several different states across the country and were given to Cathy by her grandparents whenever they would visit someplace new.

Master Bedroom

Paired with farmhouse-style decor and rustic accents, the master suite is rich in coziness and charm.

Living Room

Anchored by authentic Tiger Oak flooring, the living room serves as a site of fellowship for everyone–both young and young-at-heart–that graces the threshold of the Hitts’ home.

Master Bathroom

Tiger and Cathy expanded the master bathroom’s square footage, incorporating a walk-in shower and a free-standing tub.

Originally draping over the casket of Sgt. Roy Mayberry Hitt Jr., this American flag rests above the living room fireplace and serves as a sweet tribute to Roy–Tiger’s father, who was killed in action during the Vietnam War when Tiger was only 3 years old.

Dining Room

Rays of sunlight seep in through the dining room’s windows, engulfing this space in warmth.

Nearly every piece of furniture in Tiger and Cathy’s home is vintage, handpicked as hallmarks of vintage craftsmanship.

Kitchen

During their home’s remodel, the Hitts gutted their kitchen to the studs, handcrafting and hanging their own cabinetry, laying the backsplash’s tile and installing the shiplap siding, too. The fruit of their labors, this chic space now meshes rustic charm with Southern hospitality.

Back Deck

A peaceful retreat, the back deck is painted vibrant hues of lime green–Cathy’s favorite color–and turquoise for fun, feel-good vibes.

During the Dog Days of Summer, Tiger and Cathy often host company on the back deck, relishing in the company of their loved ones by the water.

Outdoor Lounge

This seamless extension was built after Tiger and Cathy first purchased their home. It is perfect for basking in the sunlight, taking in the beauty of surrounding nature, or grilling outdoors, savoring tasty bites by the water.

Every meal on the back deck is transformed into a scenic experience, complemented by sparkling tides and serene sunsets.

Flora FERVOR

Amazing Flowers & Occasions owner Sasha Johns is helping heal grieving hearts, one bouquet at a time.

Apoetic benediction, Sasha Johns’ floral designs bloom as a balm for the heart.

Every stem, like a stanza, is thoughtfully curated into a rhapsodic arrangement, perfectly conveying what words often cannot.

The third-generation female entrepreneur is fluent in botanical linguistics; although, she is a self-taught florist, having spent the majority of her career in corporate retail outside of the floral industry. After putting her career on pause to raise her children, Sasha returned to working full-time in October 2022, taking a job as the in-house florist at Amazing Flowers & Occasions in Columbiana.

First founded by Gertie Jones, AFO has remained a staple in the historic Main Street community, even through several turnovers in ownership and name changes, too. In 1986, Gail Coleman purchased the business, changing its name to Gail’s Florist.

The familiar moniker remained the same for 36 years, until Bob Kuehner purchased it in 2022 and changed its name to Amazing Flowers & Occasions. After decades and numerous owners, the shop is still renowned across Shelby County and beyond for its uniquely inspired arrangements.

In February 2024, following her father’s passing, Sasha purchased AFO.

“I was able to do that because of my dad and the kind of legacy he left me,” Sasha says, tearfully.

Sharing a close-knit bond, Sasha and her father were a dynamic duo. After her divorce, he recommended she go into business for herself–and when she did, she felt as though for one of the first times in her life, she was making a difference in the community.

“Having taken over this job when I did, if this had

been all grand gestures of romance, I would have hated this job because for about two years, I was absolutely anti-love,” she says.

To her surprise, not all of the orders were dozens of red roses. In fact, some of her first orders were quite poignant, celebrating people’s milestones–no matter how big.

“It was, ‘Congratulations on your last round of chemo!’ It was, ‘You made it through your first year of being a momma!’ It was happy things like that,” she says.

Weddings, funerals, anniversaries, birthdays–

Sasha creates arrangements for every occasion. She also sells silk flowers, potted plants, terrariums, wreaths, candles, tea towels and more in-store, and she teaches in-house workshops as well.

One of her favorite wedding parties to date held a flower-making party in her shop, where all of the bridesmaids learned how to create bouquets that were later used as the centerpieces for the rehearsal dinner.

While weddings are fun and comprise a large bulk of her business, Sasha says she enjoys creating arrangements for grieving families the most.

“Joy and grief are inextricably mixed sometimes,” she says. “That’s what I have found in my life. You can’t have one without the other.”

Early on in her business, Sasha received a family who came to her shop’s doorstep in tears. Though the parents were no longer married, they joined together at Sasha’s table to pick out the flowers for their son’s funeral.

“They said, ‘We want something wild because he was wild,” Sasha says. “‘We want it to look like it was growing wild and free.’ His mom told the story about some purple carnations that he had a fistful of and handed her. So, that was one of the things I did. I ordered purple carnations, and I just did a vase full. It wasn’t arranged. It was just a mess like a little kid could have picked it.”

While words sometimes fall short, flowers transcend human emotions, bridging the gap between intentionality and empathy.

even a cowboy hat. Anything someone brings her to honor a loved one, she will use to commemorate a beautiful life welllived.

One of her favorite events involved her creating the funeral blanket for an elderly man who loved flower gardening. The family wanted every single type of flower she could manage, spewing over in a beautiful display of color.

“There were very few repeats of the flowers in there,” Sasha says, later adding, “it was wild and crazy and gorgeous.”

Interestingly, creating floral designs for people walking through grief, she says, helps her connect on a deeper, more meaningful level with her customers.

“My very favorite flower is Queen Anne’s Lace, and it popped up at a really important time in my life where I was going through a lot of loss,” she says.

After attending the funeral of a dear friend, Sasha recalls driving home when her water broke at 18 weeks into her fourth pregnancy. She was nearly half-way along and already had three children–including a six-month-old baby–at home.

How does a mother transition from feeling life wiggle and kick within her womb to feeling only its absence, in the blink of an eye? How does she move on empty-handed, yet with a heart full

of what will never be?

Miscarriages are some of life’s cruelest tragedies.

Several harrowing weeks passed before Sasha decided to take her first step forward, following her recovery. Driving down Highway 41 one morning, she noticed a super bloom of Queen Anne’s Lace along the sides of the road.

Symbolically, this type of flower means “sanctuary,” “safe haven,” “comfort” and happened to line Sasha’s path to the one place she found healing after so much sorrow: her church. The women in Sasha’s church community uplifted her, brought her meals, took care of her children and more.

“Queen Anne’s Lace reminds me of a time I was cared for,” she says, smiling.

Now, Sasha incorporates these delicate blooms into every bouquet she can. She hopes that no matter the occasion, her customers feel the passion with which she creates every design.

“I hope they feel cared for when they get their flowers,” she says. “I hope there’s something in their arrangement that makes them think of a person they love.”

With every petal’s gentle unfolding, flowers beckon pause and reflection, as onlookers admire their beauty which many take for granted. On joyous days or sorrowful ones, these little “God winks” remain a simple reminder to appreciate the fleeting moments that make living all the more worthwhile.

Cultivating such beauty renders big responsibility, according to Sasha; and yet, she feels thankful for her role in the community, her pockets full of posies and pride.

Amazing Flowers & Occasions is located at 102 South Main Street in Columbiana. Business hours are Tuesday-Saturday from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., but appointments can be made outside of those time frames. MY SHELBY COUNTY

H. EMMANUEL SCOZZARO JR.

Eat Local

The Depot

My go-to eatery in Shelby County has to be The Depot in Helena, owned by the Bishops. I enjoy the Philly Cheese and Tots, which are made fresh to order and served up with a side of true Southern hospitality. The whole place radiates that warm, small-town charm that makes you want to linger a little longer and start planning your next visit before you’ve even left.

Sentimental Spots

Home Office on the Creek

Old Town Helena will always be a sentimental favorite of mine. More than a decade ago, we opened Scozzaro Law in a humble, little mill house here. Since then, we’ve grown and moved, but we’ve never left Old Town. We’re now proud to call Creekside Court our home. This community has seen our journey, and it’s a joy to still be right here in the heart of it.

Familial Loves

The Prayer Trail

When I need a peaceful moment outdoors, you’ll find me on the prayer trail behind The Church at Cahaba Bend, my family’s church. It’s like stepping into a pocket of serenity, where nature’s gentle soundtrack and the occasional distant train remind you to breathe and embrace life’s rhythm. It’s the perfect place to walk, reflect and find a little stillness in a busy world.

Serving Constituents

Scozzaro Law

What I love most about our business is, without a doubt, getting to serve families with genuine care and heart. We’ve grown from a one-person LLC into a firm of multiple dedicated attorneys, but our approach hasn’t changed. Every time we sit down with a client, it’s an honor to earn their trust. It’s not just about smart legal guidance — it’s about building relationships that last.

Fellowship in Community

Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler Shelby County throws some fantastic events —Taste of Shelby, the Festival of Tulips and Helena’s Fireworks on the Fourth are all highlights. However, the Mardi Gras Parade and Cook-Off in Hillsboro is hands-down my favorite! It’s festive, growing every year, and our firm has had such a blast being part of it the past two years. There’s something about that mix of community spirit, good food and great music that’s just infectious.
