The choice ahead for many of you is an important one. Delayed by a year to avoid voter burnout, municipal elections are set for Tuesday, Aug. 26.
This is the time to make your voice heard. It has been five years since we have had a municipal election cycle in Shelby County. In that time, we’ve seen plenty of people get worked up about national elections and plenty get worked up about their current municipal representatives.
Yet, voter turnout has been disappointing during municipal elections in recent years.
With many contested seats in several municipalities, including all seats in a few, this election cycle is extremely important for many of you.
During the 2020 municipal elections, 11 different municipalities held elections. Of those, 10 had a voter turnout of less than 20 percent, while eight were 15 percent or less.
Meanwhile, two months later, near record voter turnout was recorded for the presidential election at 69.56 percent of registered voters voting in the 2020 election.
That same passion shown for the national and statewide elections needs to be shown for municipal elections. As powerful as those governing figures are, the ones you are about to vote for to be your mayor and city council representatives are the ones who
