The BetterPoints scheme is up in lights across the city, with thousands of new users joining up on their phones for the free walking rewards initiative set up with the council and local NHS, after BetterPoints began appearing on the council roadside noticeboards.

Darnall Wellbeing is now a scheme partner too, and all local community or voluntary groups who do any walking, wheeling, cycling or running are invited to get involved.

Litter pickers, gardeners and anyone else who moves around under their own steam, in a group or individually, can pick up BetterPoints every day, and then cash in their points for hot drinks at a growing list of Sheffield Betterpoints sign cafes - but organisers want to see more Darnall, Handsworth and Attercliffe cafes taking part too. (BetterPoints cafes usually see plenty of new customers as a result, and receive compensation for costs.)

The scheme, funded by a grant won by Sheffield Council from the Department of Transport, records journeys made on foot, by bike, in a wheelchair, or by public transport on a free phone app and assigns ‘BetterPoints’ for those trips, which can then be exchanged for vouchers for free hot drinks at over 20 local cafes, for Sheffield City Centre gift cards, or given as donations to local charities.

At 11,000 users already, organisers say the take up in Sheffield has been the best ever seen in the UK, after ten years of projects all over the country.

Apart from encouraging sustainable transport, the scheme in Sheffield is taking a public health focus, since more walking in particular can help improve both physical and mental health, and encouraging people across Sheffield to get out and about more and how it will help reduce the city’s health inequalities.

Darnall Allotment Project

It’s a wonderful time of year on the allotment! Everything is growing and we are starting to harvest our fruit and veggies. We are growing potatoes, courgettes, pumpkins, broccoli, cabbage, garlic, beans, a variety of fruits and herbs and more. And it’s all organic! We have a lovely, mixed team who come on to our Grow Together session on Fridays – everyone is welcome and everyone has something to contribute!

Our polytunnel has a new skin and we have a lovely new shed built by an amazing volunteer, following the destruction of our polytunnel and summer house in the arson attack last year.

Want to learn more about composting at home? Come to our composting workshop on Saturday 14 September. Contact Sarah at darnallallotmentproj@gmail.com

Paper flowers at the allotment

The growing season has got off to a great start at Tinsley Community Allotment, with regular visits from Tinsley Meadows Primary Academy, including a whole year visit from the children in FS2. In the Easter holidays we held a Spring Open Day. Lots of fun was had making paper flowers, sowing seeds and building dens. This summer, we are once again holding three community days. Everyone is welcome to join us for crafts, games and refreshments. Any freshly harvested crops that we have will be free to take away. We are hoping to run these days on 26 July, 2 August and 16 August from 11am-1pm. Keep an eye on our Facebook and X (Twitter) pages for any updates!

Come and join the weekly Wednesday Walks in Sheffield’s East End, starting and finishing at The Library Venue on Leeds Road, from 9.30am-11.30am. The walks are for the community of Attercliffe old and new. Join Simon, Suzy and friends every Wednesday. The Library is open from 8am for breakfast, teas and coffees. Then enjoy brunch or lunch and a chat after your walk.

Local Life

On one of the rare dry and sunny days in May, Darnall Community Park (Kashmir Gardens) was filled with lots of families enjoying free activities. The churches together in Darnall (Darnall Baptist Church, Church of Christ Darnall, St Albans House Christian Community, Living Waters and Galeed House), got together to organise a free, fun event to bless the community and celebrate the festival of Pentecost.

Hundreds of local people came together, and enjoyed face painting, bubble making, craft activities, bouncy castle and circus skills. There were refreshments of drinks and biscuits, and extra cakes kindly provided by Mr Kipling, plus an opportunity for people to pray and sing.

Feedback from Mr Kipling – they fostered a spirit of creativity and collaboration and the fun day was a resounding success, bringing the community closer and creating lasting memories. The entertainment included storytelling from Open the Book, drumming and Bollywood dancing. Alongside all the activities, there were free books and the clothing bank was offering free clothes, too. The event was so popular and was such a lovely atmosphere, that instead of finishing at 3pm, the activities continued until 3.30pm.

It was wonderful to see so many different people all gathered together enjoying the sunshine. Friends from school and neighbours bumping into each other, children playing together and families sat chatting in the sunshine. A really joyful celebration of community.

New to Darnall? Want to make new friends? You are welcome to our activities or to just come in, say hello and see what we have to offer. Galeed House is a place of friendship for everyone in Darnall. All our activities are free and open to all. We have a new project, a homework and study club for children and young people – there are volunteers at the house to help with questions, as well as it being a quiet, calm place to study. There is no need to apply or register for any of our activities –just come along, everyone is welcome! For more information, visit www.galeedhouse.org.uk Galeed House, 75 Nidd Road S9 3BB

“Meadows Magnified” at High Hazels Park is an exciting research project with Sheffield University and the Green Estate Community Interest Company, installing a new wildflower meadow in the park and exploring new ways for the local community to engage with parks and their nature. As it grows, there will be activities to take part in producing art and monitoring pollinators. Over the summer, there will be different events to sign up to. Look out for posters and on the Friends of High Hazels Park Facebook page. Wildflowers in High Hazels Park

Could you support the first steps in a dog’s journey towards becoming a life-changing assistance dog? The Sheffield-based Support Dogs charity is looking for volunteer puppy socialisers to provide a loving home and help the organisation to prepare its puppies over their first 14 months of life, before they begin full-time training.

Someone with an enclosed garden and who is at home for the majority of the day is preferable. The charity covers all associated costs including food, Who could resist such a cute dog? equipment, bedding and medical bills, and you receive one-to-one support throughout the process from its team of trainers.

High Hazels

Marie Elliott, Principal at High Hazels Academy reflects on her first 18 months at the school It was with great excitement and a deep sense of responsibility that 18 months ago I took up my appointment as the new principal of High Hazels Academy. After 22 years in education, I feel honoured that I have been given the opportunity to serve the school and wider Darnall community.

I find myself reflecting on the countless moments of pride that have defined my journey so far at High Hazels Academy, each moment stands as a testament to the strength and spirit of our wonderful school community. Highlights include our class assemblies, school performances, parent forum meetings, many enrichment opportunities we have created to bring our curriculum to life, the links with Housteads care home, the summer fayre and our first international day! However, one of my favourite days was when we opened our new school library. The school minister for education, the world book day team and three famous authors have already visited the magical space and were genuinely thrilled to see what we had created.

The new school library

I believe in the importance of building knowledge in our young learners. The foundation of knowledge we lay during these primary years is crucial for our children's future academic success and personal growth. My goal has been to continue fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where every child can thrive. Education is not just about academic achievement but also about nurturing well-rounded individuals who are prepared for the future.

Our families are key to this success, and I have enjoyed getting to know them all and the differing community groups that make up our Darnall community. I have a dedicated and committed staff team who are the backbone of our school, and their dedication to the children’s growth and development deserves my deepest appreciation. It is the children that are the heart and soul of our school community, and their energy, curiosity, and resilience inspire me each and every day. What a wonderful 18 months it has been, whether exploring knowledge in the classrooms, delving into the pages of a book in our new library, or embarking on a new learning adventure, the children’s eagerness to discover and learn is truly awe-inspiring. Here’s to another year of learning, growth, and success!

High Hazels Park

After years of planning and consultation, the improvements at High Hazels Park are due to commence in July, starting with the demolition of the large shelter. This work is scheduled to take approximately two weeks.

During this time park users will notice that all, or part of, the main playground will be closed to keep park users safe. Following shelter demolition, the new improvements will commence. This includes a covered seating area, seats, picnic bench, adult gym area, new pathway and new marked scoot track. During the works there will be more vehicles coming in and out of the park.

Please take extra care whilst in the park, particularly if you have children or dogs with you. If you have any queries with regards to the works, before or during, contact Parks and Countryside on 0114 2500 500. Thanks to the East Local Area Committee and locally elected councillors for their support.

Community Researcher Collaboration

In the past year, Darnall Well Being, Sheffield Hallam University (SHU), and Darnall residents have collaborated on a

research project about Social Prescribing and Frailty. This independent project combined their assets and knowledge to develop research abilities, conduct studies, analyse data, write reports, and share findings. SHU researchers, including a highly experienced minority ethnic researcher, worked with DWB to create tailored training for the diverse group of 16 trainees, 15 of whom completed the programme and conducted qualitative research. An upcoming report will detail their methods and findings, highlighting the successful partnership between the university and DWB, as a community health organization. We will be sharing the report online when it is published.

Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park

Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park welcomed over 3,000 visitors to the Park on Sunday 2 June for the third Olympic Legacy in Action community event. A fantastic day was had by everyone young and old who came along and took part in taster sessions for sports. This year for the first time judo and boxing were two of the sports on offer, as well as basketball, netball, ice skating, football, rugby, cricket cycling, table tennis, snooker, climbing, trampolining and on the canal canoeing and paddle boarding.

In addition there was face painting, henna art, bubble tea as well as a very popular free book stall. The event was organised with Move More Sheffield and the National Centre for Sport & Exercise Medicine. For the first time this year we joined up with Sheffield Children’s who hosted activities and provided advice and information on health and wellbeing for children and young people and ShefFood which delivered activities and demonstrations and provided advice and information about health and sustainable food.

Keep your eyes peeled for when the date of the 2025 event is announced.

Many thanks to Westfield Health for sponsoring the event.

Can you spot yourself at the event? See the photos on pages 10 and 11.

The community event was the first of three events held at the Park to mark Olympic Legacy in Action in June. A boccia event was held to tie in with the Boccia England Cup Finals 2024 hosted at the English Institute for Sport Sheffield (EISS). The event had 61 participants taking part from eight schools from across Sheffield, competing against one another to be crowned Sheffield Champions. The final event was the This Girl Can and Colour Smash. This Girl Can saw 200 teenage girls from secondary schools trying a range of different sports they may not have tried before. Their day culminated in a colour smash event, two laps of Don Valley Bowl. The Colour Smash event had over 800 students of all ages taking part, getting covered (as much as they choose) head to toe in coloured “paint”. See photos on p11

Connecting with the community is one of our main aims at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park and we’ve recently captured and collated details of some of the wonderful work that takes place in and around the Park. Find out more about the types of activities and programmes delivered by Park partners and opportunities for you to get involved.

Community conversations helping to inform research at the AWRC

Sheffield Hallam University’s Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC) is a world leading centre for physical activity research and innovation. Located at the heart of the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, the centre's mission is to transform lives through innovations that help people move.

Involving members of the public in research is essential to work at the AWRC. Their contribution improves the quality of research and informs how it is prioritised and designed, so it has a positive impact in communities. The centre has a dedicated Public Involvement in Research Group (PIRG), made up of members of the public from a variety of backgrounds, who provide valuable input and feedback on research projects.

The AWRC’s new ambitious five-year strategy sets out a vision that aims to tackle some of society’s most complex challenges, through the perspective of movement and physical activity. As part of this work, they are looking to connect and work with community organisations to gain their opinions around these challenges, to understand how they are viewed and the effect they have on people’s lives. If you are a community organisation and would like to get involved and be part of the conversation, contact PIRG Coordinator, Jo Talbot at awrcpirg@shu.ac.uk

It can be extremely stressful when your child is unwell.

The Healthier Together website https://sybhealthiertogether.nhs.uk/ has clear and accurate information on common childhood illnesses all in one place, including advice on what 'red-flag' signs to look out for, where to seek help if required, what you should do to keep your child comfortable and how long your child’s symptoms are likely to last.

As well as having this important information for parents, the website also has lots of useful information for pregnant women and young people. It has been developed in partnership between parents and healthcare professionals from across Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster and Bassetlaw.

Most importantly, the resources are used not only by parents, but also by healthcare professionals. This means that you and your child are receiving consistently high quality care, irrespective of which healthcare provider you take them to see. Darnall and Attercliffe Mosques

A history of local mosques by Shabir

Darnall resident

There are approximately ten mosques that serve the Darnall and Attercliffe population today. The earliest of these served the first generation of migrants from the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East. They were the Quba Mosque & Education Centre, Worksop Road, the Marakazi Jamia Mosque, Industry Road and the Jamiyate Tablige Islam Mosque, Bodmin Street.

The function of these early mosques was to provide a formal place of worship for the new Muslim migrants settling in the area in the 1960s and 70s. These were mainly used by men as space was limited and many of the families of these working migrants had not come over yet. The functions of these mosques were quite basic at the time - the establishment of the five daily prayers, the Friday and Eid congregational prayers and funerals.

Quba Mosque & Education Centre

By the end of the 1970s and early 1980s most of the families of the early migrants had come over and settled in the Darnall and Attercliffe area. This led to the need for these early mosques to provide religious educational classes for the children of those families. These classes usually took place in the evenings after the children had attended their mainstream primary or secondary schools. These mosques played a vital role in educating the first generation of Muslims in Darnall and Attercliffe, but also provided

a spiritual sanctuary from some of the difficulties of migrant work and life, including some of the struggles against racism and prejudice they endured at the time.

The number of mosques in the area has grown, largely due to the growing Muslim population in Darnall through birth and new people moving into the area. Today, the role of the local mosques has changed to adapt to the needs of the new generations of Muslims, as well as those who are not Muslim but would like to learn something about Islam and Muslims.

The large mosques in the area now cater for women, with separate dedicated spaces for them to attend events and prayers. These mosques also host regular open days, school visits, and events for adults and children who want to learn about the Muslim culture and way of life. Some of these mosques have begun to offer wider services, like youth groups, food banks, warm places, litter picks, clothes recycling, etc. They are also becoming better at forging links with other organisations within the local community such as local schools, GP practices, charities and the local council. The mosques of Darnall and Attercliffe have come a fairly long way since their establishment in the 1960s, in terms of the population they serve and the activities they do. They are now ready to deal with the rising challenges of a diverse and deprived population in the 21st century.

Keeping our Streets Clean

We all want the very best neighbourhoods to live, work and play in. Reducing litter and flytipping is important to residents across Sheffield. We can all help keep Darnall, Attercliffe and Tinsley to be a clean and tidy neighbourhood by reporting rubbish and taking pride in our streets by litter picking. Remember, littering and dumping waste are both criminal offences and carry instant fines and can lead to prosecution.

Report Litter & Fly-tipping

You can report litter and the illegal dumping of waste (fly-tipping) in two ways. Both will ensure the area is cleared by Sheffield City Council:

1. Scan the QR code below to report direct with Sheffield City Council

2. Download the Fix My Street App on your smart device for quick and easy reporting on the go.

Keep your street clean or organise a litter pick

Did you know you can collect free litter picking equipment from Darnall and Tinsley Library, just call in and ask. You can organise a community litterpick or keep your street looking lovely on your own – if you start, others will always follow! Check out Attercliffe Angels & Darnall Dazzlers Litter Pickers on Facebook!

Fearless are a part of Crimestoppers and their service aims to break down barriers with reporting crimes in under 18’s.

Some of the benefits around using Crimestoppers/Fearless are:

· You will never be asked for your name

· No police will contact you

· You will not be asked to attend court or give a statement

· IP Addresses cannot be tracked

· Less waiting times than 101

Schools and organisations can also order FREE posters from their website, fearless.org, which can be displayed to promote the use of the service. The website also lists youth support services eg: · Drugs support · Advice on healthy relationships · Hate crime support · Knife crime support · County lines support · Child financial exploitation support

Crimes can be reported 100% anonymously. This can be done by: Visiting website fearless.org, contacting 0800 555111 or on X @fearlessorg

Help and Support

The Community Connector has teamed up with Shelter to provide a series of articles about housing. This time, we look at rent increases for private tenants, Your landlord may tell you the rent is going up without giving you a formal notice. https://england.shelter.org.uk/housing_advice/private_renting/rent_increases

For example, they might phone or message you.

Your rent will only go up if you agree to it

If you pay the new amount, it legally becomes your rent, even if you're not happy about it

Make sure you get confirmation in writing if you agree to the new rent, as this will be useful should any future issues occur.

If you do not agree to an increase, your landlord can only raise your rent if you either have a rent review clause in your contract or the landlord uses the section 13 process. Rent Review Clause

Some tenancies have a rent review clause which is a term in your contract that says how the rent can be increased. The clause might say something like: "the landlord will review the rent in April each year and give the tenant one months’ notice of any increase”.

Or it could be more specific and say something like: "the rent will increase each April in line with the Retail Price Index (RPI)". A rent review clause will not usually apply after a fixed term contract ends. It will apply if the agreement says the tenancy continues as a contractual periodic tenancy after the fixed term. https://england.shelter.org.uk/housing_advice/private_renting/ rent_increases/fixed_term_tenancy

Section 13 Notice

Your landlord can only issue this once a year. It’s a one months’ notice of a rent increase, however your landlord cannot increase your rent in this way if you're in the first year of your tenancy. Your landlord can give you a section 13 notice in your fixed term, but your rent cannot go up until the fixed term has ended.

FREE Careers Service for Adults

Any Section 13 notice needs to be on form 4, give at least one months’ notice of the rent increase, provide a start date of the new rent and needs to be the first day of a period of your tenancy. If you challenge a section 13 notice at a tribunal, your rent stays the same until the tribunal makes a decision. Otherwise, the rent will increase from the date in your section 13 notice.

It could be harassment if your landlord or letting agent pressures you to agree. It will be an illegal eviction if they make you leave because you won't agree. Your landlord must follow the legal process if they want to end your tenancy. Show your landlord our advice on your tenancy rights if they say you must sign a new agreement with a higher rent.
