Chidambaram agrees to release pending salaries of ANFPDCL workers Port Blair, Jan. 17: The Finance Minister of India Mr. P Chidambaram has agreed to the request made by Andaman’s Lt. Governor for releasing of funds for payment of pending salaries of hundreds of employees of Andaman Nicobar Forest Plantation Development Corporation Limited (ANFPDCL).

The concession came during a meeting of the Finance Minister with the Lt. Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lt. Gen (Retd.)

A K Singh on yesterday.

According to an official press release issued by Andaman and Nicobar Administration the Lt. Governor of A & N Islands called on the Union Finance

Minister, Mr. P. Chidambaram on January 16, 2014 to discuss various crucial issues relating to the A&N Islands.

“One of the issues discussed was release of funds for payment of salaries of the employees of Andaman Nicobar Islands Forest & Plantation Development Corporation Ltd. The Union Finance Minster has agreed to the request for releasing of funds for payment of salaries of employees of the Forest Corporation,” the release added.Andaman and Nicobar Forest Plantation Development Corporation Ltd. (ANFPDCL), a Public Sector Undertaking of the Government of India, is facing acute financial crisis since

2002, after tree felling was banned in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, by the Supreme Court of India.Since last three months the workers of ANFPDCL have not received their salary and wages, forcing them to go for hunger strike in Andamans.

Narendra Modi a person of great prominence, want to know his views: European Union NEW DELHI: The European Union on Friday termed Narendra Modi as a "person of great prominence" on India's political landscape and said it respects the judicial verdict that has given clean chit to the Gujarat chief minister for 2002 riots, on which there were "enormous" concerns around the world.

EU Ambassador to India Joao Cravinho said the views of the 28-member bloc on the Gujarat riots have been based on India's judicial and political process and it engages with Modi like with any other leader.

"He is a person of great prominence in the political scene. So, of course, we are interested in knowing his views, seeing what plans he has if he comes to power," Cravinho said.

"Our position is to respect what the judicial and political processes are. We have no issue whatsoever with the competence and capacity of the Indian judicial system," he said.

A magistrate's court last month had upheld a clean chit given to Modi by a Supreme Courtappointed probe panel in the massacre of 68 people in

Gulberg Housing Society during the riots.

The ambassador said the EU was following the "political developments" in India in a "non-active manner" and that it has been engaged with all important "political actors" including Modi. He said EU never adopted any official position on the Gujarat riots issue but maintained that there was enormous concerns for the "tragedy of 2002" around the world. "Firstly we interact with different parts of India. We interact with many chief ministers. We have had lunch with different chief ministers. So this should not be seen as something unusual or strange," he said referring to lunch hosted

by the EU for Modi last year.

He said there was no impact in business between European countries and Gujarat as the companies have been active in the BJP-ruled state for many years.

"Business-wise, there has never been any issue. European companies are very much present and active in Gujarat and have been there for many years. There has been no impact of any sort on their activities.

"Whoever is the Indian Prime Minister, we will certainly respect the democratic legitimacy of that position. So we will work with him as we will work with anybody else," he said.

AAP issues show-cause to rebel MLA Vinod Kumar Binny NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party issued notice on Friday to legislator Vinod Kumar Binny for indulging in activities aimed at tarnishing the image of the party, an official said. "Yes, we have issued a show-cause notice to Binny," an official told IANS. He said the notice

states "you held a press conference at 10am on the given date", with intent to "tarnish the image of the party".

"This is in violation of ... the party's constitution," the notice further says.

The official said Binny has been asked to respond to the notice by 5pm on

January 18 before the party's national secretary Pankaj Gupta.

Binny had attacked the party and the government for allegedly backtracking on the promises made in the assembly election manifesto, including on water and power sectors.

In India this could not happen," Yadav said.

Coast Guard conducts drawing and painting competition Port Blair, Jan 17: As a part of 38th Coast Guard Raising Day celebrations, Indian Coast Guard conducted a drawing and painting competition for school children at Gandhi Park with the theme ‘the nature’, today. Smt. Jyoti Murthy, President Tatrakshika (A&N) was the chief guest for the event.

Altogether 120 children from 12 different schools of Port Blair participated in the event. ‘On the Spot Topics’ were given to the budding artists under three different categories. Sushmita Bala of Ananda Marga English Medium School came first in Group A (3rd to 4th standard), Sneha Prasad of GDMS school, Middle Point came first in Group B (5th to 8th standard), while Gurunadh of

GSSS Telugu Medium came first in Group C (9th to 12th standard).

A freehand painting demonstration was also given

by Asst Comdt Pritam Ghosh from ICGS Kanaklata Barua to enhance interest of the

young generation towards this creative field.

After culmination of the event, Mrs Jyoti Murthy gave away the prizes and certificates to the winners.

RS: I'm afraid your bespoke tailor has put a bespoke in your wheel. He's stopped making your signature kurtas and is instead churning out thousands of AAP caps and Mango People Tshirts. They're selling like hot jalebis.

NaMo: So what should i do to get back into fashion? Shave off my signature beard and dye my moustache black to look like a wannabe Kejri? Go one better than Mango People T-shirts by designing my own Alphonso People lungis? RS: Don't worry.

Box Office: Yaariyan A Notch Above Dedh Ishqiya

Divya Khosla Kumar’s young and breezy Yaariyan, with newcomers in the lead, seemed to have taken over the mature and heavy love story Dedh Ishqiya, which had an ensemble cast at the Box Office.

Yaariyan has been produced

by T-Series and stars debutants Himansh Kohli, Rakul Preet Singh, Nicole Faria, Shreyas Pardiwalla and Devanshu Sharma while Dedh Ishqiya boasts of veterans like Nasseruddin Shah, Madhuri Dixit, Arshad Warsi and Huma Qureshi.

Dedh Ishqiya was a sequel to a successful film Ishqiya, but it seems that the film’s matured content laced with equally heavy Urdu dialect did not appeal to the audiences.

Dedh Ishqiya was expected to be a slow starter but one was hoping that it would pick up, but then in its first week the film managed to collect approximately 165 million (16.50 crores) nett.

On the other hand, Yaariyan, which was made on a shoestring budget, managed to collect approximately

Rs 268 million (26.8 crore) nett in its first week.

The music and the market strategy proved to be a winning point as far as Yaariyan was concerned, with two songs of Yo Yo Honey Singh trending the charts. On the other hand, Dedh Ishqiya got critically acclaimed, but then it ended there, as the film did not appeal to the masses at all.

Madhuri Dixit has a lot of hope from this film as it was slated to be a comeback film, but now it seems all eyes are set on her next release Gulaab Gang.

As far as Arshad Warsi is concerned, year 2014 has not began on a very good note for this talented actor as both his films have failed to do much at the Box Office.

Today January 17, 2014, two films, Miss Lovely and Karle Pyaar Karle are set to release, but then one does not expect too much from them.

Now all eyes are set on January 24, 2014 where Salman Khan is ready to set the Box Office on fire with Jai Ho.

Wipro revenues up by 18 per cent IT services major Wipro announced on Friday that it's consolidated revenues in the third quarter ending December 31 amounted to Rs. 11,330 crores, an increase of 18 per cent over the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

The company also registered a net profit of Rs. 2,010 crores, 27 per cent more than what it made in the previous year. Dollar-denominated earnings from IT services amounted to $1.68 billion, 6.4 per cent higher than in the previous year. Revenues from IT services amounted to Rs. 10,330 crores, an increase of 20 per cent. Net profit from IT services amounted to Rs. 2,380 crores, an increase of 33 per cent over the previous year. Executive director and CEO T.K. Kurien said the company expects revenues in

the fourth quarter to range between $1.712 billion and $1.745 billion.

Chairman Azim Premji said the company senses "optimism among clients, especially in the West," as there is expectation that the advanced economies are progressing towards "stability."

Wipro's overall revenues include revenues of $ 43 million that is attributable to Opus CMC, which it acquired in December 2013.

The company announced an interim dividend of Rs 3 per share.

Pulse Polio Immunization on January 19: DHS Port Blair, Jan 17: The first round of Pulse Polio Immunization programme will be conducted on January 19 together with the rest of the country. The Directorate of Health Services has geared to cover all the children under the age group of 0 to 5yrs in these Islands, said its Director, Dr. SK Paul during an advocacy workshop held at the conference hall of AYUSH Hospital here today.

The DHS further stated that since last five years all the stool samples for Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) cases from these islands have shown negative results and according to norms if the AFP samples of any state show negative results for four continuous years then the area is declared as polio- free zone. The DHS, quoting sources, said it is expected that this year India will be getting Polio- free status.

Giving details of the preparedness to cover maximum children, the Deputy Director (Health), Dr. Avijit Roy said that the num-

ber of estimated children to be covered during the first round stands at 30,796. Out of this, 19,198 children will be covered in South Andaman District, 8255 in North & Middle Andaman and 3343 in Nicobar District. Altogether, 660 Polio centers including 10 in Defence area will function.

In addition, 58 mobile booths will also be pressed into service for maximum coverage.

Port Blair (HQ) is having the largest 6734 estimated children for PPI while the lowest 48 children at Long Island.

Arrangements also been made to set up Polio booths at bus stands, Jetties

and Airport to cover children travelling in buses/ships or arriving/ departing for mainland.

The fund of Rs 12, 67, 800 lakh sanctioned by GOI has been allocated to all the Institution on the basis of the norms for conducting first round of PPI. The sufficient number of 41900 doses of OP vaccine for first round has been received

by Ministry of Health and Family welfare and its dispatch to different islands have been completed. The Deputy Director has appealed to the parents to bring their children in the age group of 0-5years in the nearest polio booths for administering polio drops.

Arvind Kejriwal meets home minister Shinde as AAP govt wants to ‘fix’ Delhi Police

NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party government took up with the Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde its demand for the suspension of four police officials for alleged non-cooperation and lapses in duty after the Delhi Police chief rejected their call for the said personnel to be penalised.

With the government going into confrontational mode, Delhi minister Manish Sisodia said they will "fix" the police even if the force did not come under their jurisdiction.

"There are rapes happening in the city, sex and drug rackets are being run openly, but police are doing nothing.

"We will not stay quiet, this isn't the Sheila Dikshit government. We are being accused of vigilantism, but we are a different government.

"This government won't make any excuses like Delhi Police is not under us, they will have to do their duty. Police have to act. We will fix the police even if they don't come under us," Sisodia told reporters at the Secretariat.

Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal met home minister Sushilkumar Shinde in the evening today over the issue.

Earlier in the day, Kejriwal and his Cabinet colleagues Rakhi Birla, Somnath Bharti and Manish Sisodia met Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung at his residence where Delhi Police commissioner BS Bassi was also present along

with the four police officials who are under fire from the AAP ministers.

At the meeting, which lasted for about an hour, Kejriwal and the ministers raised the issue of women's safety in the capital while calling for the suspension of the three SHOs and the ACP for their alleged refusal to cooperate.

The LG ordered a highlevel inquiry into the cases but the demand for suspension was refused by commissioner Bassi.

Two Delhi ministers, Bharti and Birla, have accused three police officials of non-cooperation in two separate cases.

Bharti has charged that Malviya Nagar police did not cooperate with him about conducting a raid on Nigerian nationals whom he alleged were involved in a drugs and sex racket at Khirki village.

Birla has accused Sagarpur police of shielding the members of a family who allegedly burnt their daughter-in-law over dowry demands.

To improve the situation, the education department already took initiatives to impart intensive training to the teacher training graduates to make them qualified through the Teachers’ Eligibility Test(TET), he added. Mr Singh hoped that the two day seminar will explore new ways to make these islands excel in the field of higher education.

Delivering key note address, Prof R Chakraborty, former Vice Chancellor, Netaji Subhas Open University Calcutta dwelt on open learning and higher education scenario in the islands.

Earlier, Dr Iqbal Ahmed, Principal of JNRM briefed on the education scenario of the islands, particularly the lack of avenues for the higher education. He stated that despite starting evening college, JNRM could not cater to the higher education needs of the eligible students due to limited seats availability. He stressed the need for opening more colleges including a women college to enable the students from economically weaker sections to pursue their higher education without any constraints, who otherwise cannot afford for

their higher education at the mainland colleges.

In this two day seminar that concluded on Friday, a number of papers on different aspects of higher education in the islands were presented by acad emic experts from the Islands’ colleges and Institutions, besides eminent scholars including Prof Amarendu Pani, Director, Association of Indian Universities, New D elhi and Prof Sanat Ghosh, For emer D ean , Rabind r a B harat i University, Kolkata.
