Port Blair, Feb.21: The Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, GOI, Smt. Krishna Raj arrived here today on a three day visit to the Islands.

The Minister visited the Central Island Agriculture Research Institute (CIARI) in the morning and interacted with the scientists in the conference hall. Addressing the scientist fraternity, Smt. Raj expressed happiness about the research activities being carried out by the scientists in these remote Islands. She said, we all have to work together in order to achieve the GoI’s target of doubling the income of the farmers’ by 2022. She said, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Departments have to

work in tandem to take the schemes of the Central Govt, to the farming community. In the agriculture and allied sector, we have to uplift the farmers, she remarked. She underlined the need of taking up cage culture, fresh water fisheries, deep sea fishing, sea weed cultivation etc.

The Minister said, sea weed has good market at International level for which she underscored the need for its propagation in larger scale.

The Minster directed the Director of Fisheries to send good proposal for exploring inland fishing & deep sea fishing and other meaningful schemes for the betterment of the fishermen. She also desired that fish-

ermen should be provided with better fishing materials. The Minister also enquired about the implementation of Insurance and Housing Schemes meant for the fishermen community.

The Minister also directed for starting Rashtriya Gokul Mission in these Islands.

She asked the concerned officials to prepare a proposal to avail the Gokul Mission scheme launched by the Government of India for conservation and development of indigenous breeds in a focused and scientific manner. Manpreet Singh, Indian Hockey Captain: India is big enough for cricket and hockey to co-exist

Hockey is a sport Indian didn’t just dominate but virtually reigned supreme in.

However, that was decades ago. Emergence of other sports and a decline in results in international competitions relegated hockey to a secondary sport in the country for several years. However, of late, both the men’s and women’s national sides have looked to recover some of hockey’s lost glory in India with impressive results.

Both the teams won their respective Asia Cups and the men won a bronze in the World Hockey League Finals last year. The two captains, Manpreet Singh and Rani Rampal, were in Delhi recently for an event to announce the teams’ new sponsor, the state of Odisha, and spoke to us about the significance of this year for Indian hockey.The recent positive results have earned the sport newer fans. Rani says, "The players are better motivated

now. Earlier, there was a feeling ki kiske liye khel rahe ho. But when people support you, you want to push that much harder.”

Manpreet adds, “The last year was good but that needs to continue in 2018 too for the fanfare to sustain." With three major tournaments lined up this year, 2018 is the make or break year for Indian hockey. Rani elaborates, "2018 is a very crucial year for Indian hockey, since we have the World Cup, the Commonwealth Games, and the Asian Games this year.

We are in good spirits after last year’s performances and we want to repeat that this year and get medals in all major tournaments."Rani adds, "I do believe that if we are able to do that, the graph of women’s hockey will go up. This will empower more girls to think they can take up hockey, so it’s a big responsibility for us to do well."

It has often been said that cricket’s rise in India coincided with hockey’s decline and the former ’s dominance in the Indian sports scene has been attributed to hockey ‘not getting

its due shar e’. However, Manpreet disagrees with this notion. "Cricket is also our sport. Whenever, the cricket team wins, we also get happy because India has won.

Whenever we win a big tournament, they congratulate us on social media. Fans might think there is animosity between the two games but they should see how we appreciate each other. India is big enough for cricket and hockey to co-exist," says Manpreet.

Due to his on-field successes and the fact that he is the Indian skipper, Manpreet is often compared to another Indian captain – Virat Kohli. The 26-year-old laughs off such comparisons, saying, "Someone recently said I stay calm like MS Dhoni. Then, some say my game is similar to Vir at Kohli’s. They are much bigger players than I am. I get to learn a lot from them, to be honest. They are legends who have won a lot of laurels for India, so I always try to learn from them, the way they conduct themselves, how they approach their game, and their focus on fitness."

Indian boxing's weight-loss: No 64kg, 81kg male boxers at CWG NEW DELHI: India will not be fielding male boxers in the 64kg and 81kg categories, along with a couple of women's divisions, in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, the trials for which would be held by the end of this month.

The women categories to be dropped are 57kg and 75kg with the Boxing Federation of India citing low medals prospects in these divisions as the reason for their axing, a top source said.The decision means that India would be fielding an eight-strong men's squad (49kg, 52kg, 56kg, 60kg, 69kg, 75kg, 91,kg,+91kg) and four-member women's team (48kg, 51kg, 60kg and 69kg) for the Games to be held from April 4 to 15.

The deadline to submit the final squads is March 5 and the trials are expected to be held after both the men's and women's squads return from Bulgaria after competing in the ongoing Strandja Memorial Tournament early next week.

However, the BFI was tight-lipped about the development with Secretary General Jay Kowli saying, "I am not going to comment on individual weight categories which may or may not be there. But every boxer will be given a fair chance."

"We had decided that one trial alone would not be the criteria and we are assessing each boxer's performance in every tournament.

Once the teams are back from Strandja, we will be finalising the squads for CWG," he said.

"We no longer have oneday trials. So, boxers are put through enough rigours to ensure that the best is chosen to represent the country. Right now, we are not just targeting the Commonwealth Games but also the Asian Games," he added.The dropping of 64kg and 81kg categories does not come as much of a surprise given that medals have not been coming in these divisions. But the women's 57kg

category being axed is certain to raise a few eyebrows.

Sonia Lather has delivered a world and Asian silver medal in this division even though she bowed out early from last month's India Open in Delhi and the ongoing Strandja Memorial.

Asked if a boxer, whose weight category is dropped, would be allowed to give a trial in a different division, Kowli said, "We will work that out in the next few days."

Speaking of days, the BFI would have just about four to finalise the CWG squads after the teams return from Bulgaria.

"That's enough time to sort it out, it won't be a problem," asserted Kowli.

India are 12th in the alltime CWG medal list of boxing, having won five gold, nine silver and 14 bronze. The country first won a boxing gold at the quadrennial event in 2002 through Mohammed Ali Qamar.

NEW DELHI: This is an exciting time to play cricket in Delhi. Yes, there is pollution and all but spring is here and the conditions are perfect for cricket. As the mystic Delhi team, which keeps on producing big players, locks horns against an in-form Andhra in the quarterfinals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, here at the Palam ground on Thursday, all eyes will be on veteran Gautam Gambhir.

Known for his batting prowess at the highest level, nothing seems to have changed for Gambhir. He continues to be the same wavelength like he was in the past. In terms of success rate, it may have vacillated a little bit.

But his inner strength to fight on keeps this cricket going in life.

There were instances in the past when a few of the elements went against him in the Delhi team itself. But that didn't affect Gambhir. In other words, you agree or not, Delhi cricket is still about Gambhir.

While facing captain Ishant Sharma in the nets, he was beaten by two away going swing deliveries from the lanky pacer.

Trudeau, who is on a week-long state visit to India, made the assurance during his 40-minute meeting with Amarinder at a private hotel after the former returned from the Golden Temple on Wednesday.

Situation in Doklam is absolutely fine: Army Chief NEW DELHI: The situation in Doklam is "absolutely fine" and there is no reason to worry, Army chief Bipin Rawat said here on Wednesday, amid reports of China developing defence infrastructure near the strategically key area.

Commenting on last year's Doklam standoff, Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba said "frequent" instances of transgression by the Chinese army across the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and the Doklam incident were an indication of increasing assertiveness by China.

Admiral Lanba, who is also chairman of chiefs of staff committee, while addressing a conference, said the face-off at Doklam has also underscored the vulnerability of Siliguri Corridor, a 22 kmlong narrow stretch linking the Northeast with the rest of India. "(It is) absolutely fine.

Petrol Scarcity...

But one Petrol pump and its connection to underground tank is not operative since its installation and another Petrol pump’s Motor got damaged yesterday evening at 4 PM. Government Ferry...

As per rule Islanders get ferry tickets for Havelock at around Rs 50 while tourists have to pay somewhere around Rs 445 for a ferry ticket from Port Blair to Havelock.

Recently an alert

Tally Clerk had detected a possible fraud in issuance of Government Ferry tickets for Havelock sector by CSCs. As per report the said Tally Clerk has detected as many as 22 tickets in one day, which were issued to tourists by a particular CSC at Port Blair, in Islanders’ fare, while the CSC centre has charged full amount of Rs. 445 (nonIslander fare) from tourist.

It seems the particular CSC centre has paid only Rs. 50 to government while the rest amount has been gobbled up by the CSC. Luckily the passenger manifest, which is created by the software clearly showed that the tourists paid only Rs. 50 to government on which the Tally clerk detected the fraud.
