About Me Hello my name is Andrew Shearman and I am in my fourth year at the University of Idaho.

Ever since I was a kid, I have always had architecture on the mind. Like many creative youths, I was fascinated by the endless possibility of things I could create with simple tools such as Legos or household objects. As I got older, my passion for the built environment started to develop with each family vacation to a new city. Driving for hours on end only to be struck in awe by the boundless height of the city scape that peered into view as we reached our destination, or the peace I experienced early in the morning at the cabin we used to visit in the summers. During my time as a student, I aim to learn as much as I can about design methods and finding my unique architecural language. One of the things I want to learn more about is how to utilize substainable and green friendly solutions into my designs, creating systems which contribute to a better tommorrow. I am also fasinated by the dictonomy between the realm of architectue and the simple need for dwelling. How does materiality, intentionality, and context all contribute to ones personal experience within a space and how can we as designers reclaim the humaninistic qualities of buildings which is immbeded within the vernacular?

It is my goal as a future architect and designer to help create a world that will not just give people a place to take sheler. But instead to offer everyday people places where they can dwell, reflect, and ultimately feel they belong. I aim to help make a meaningful difference for the people that occupy the buildings I create and improve their lives by doing so.

Impulse

Arch 354 -Spring 2023

The project was part of a studio-wide competition to design a Moscow, Idaho Public Library emphasizing the use and exploration of CMU. Impulse aims to form a new connection between knowledge and community. On an axis with Friendship Square and Moscow High School, the user is pulled in by what seems to be an extension of the city. “The Heart”, a 30 foot-tall, concaved skylight, offers the user a moment of reverence and awe to contemplate their place in the city. In constant connection with this structure, members of the community are then directed outward during their search for knowledge and purpose.

Architectural Techtonics Arch 253 -Fall 2021

This project was an introduction to tectonics, spatial relationships, materiality, and site specific intervention. The site for this project is located at the threshold into Boise State Campus from the neighboring Julia Davis Park, the Boise River, and the Green Belt. Using nearby circulation and tectonic relationships, I designed a public space for Boise State students and visiting users. The process began with a detailed analysis of the site and built from there.

The Allegory of Oedipa Mass Arch 504 -Form from Fiction A fractured mind pushed beyond its breaking point to escape the social roles forced upon traditional housewives at the height of modernity. In the book ‘The Crying of Lot 49’ written by Thomas Pynchon, Oedipa Mass has taken it upon herself to track down a postal conspiracy that is intertwined within the city of San Narciso, California. Unsure whether her suspicions have validity or if her mind has simply made it all up, the reader follows the journey of Oedipa through her apparent delusional fantasies. Using a series of allegorical drawings, I attempted to represent the brokenness and manipulation of her mind as seen through the literary descriptions of the book. Creating a new architectural language that pushes and pulls space, much like the mind of Oedipa Mass.

The Revival Arch 353 -Fall 2022

In an attempt to bring travel and traffic along the Columbia River Gorge, me and my studio developed a series of art works along the river that would ultimatley end with a Biennale at the Cascade Locks Recreational Area. Each of us was assigned a site to respond to and created an art pavillion that would contribute to the larger Bienalle. The Revival explores the relationship between ground, man, and art. Allowing visitors a place of refuge from there overwhelming surroundings, the pavilion will offer a calm and multisensory experience that will nourish and revive them for the rest of their day at the Biennale. Rooting itself in the ground, the spaces will deliver quite moments and atmospheric light to experience art in new ways.

Sketching on Location Rome, Italy -Fall 2023

While studying abroad in Rome, Italy I had the opportunity to grow my love for drawing even more through the act of sketching on location. Art has always been a passion of mine ever since I was little. I have always sketched and took a couple of art classes in high school for fun. However, it wasnt until a couple years ago that I really started dedicating myself to my craft and learning how to properly use watercolor and other mediums to portray the feeling I wanted in my art. Over the three months I spent in Italy I was able to form a unique style that I can call my own and engage in with the subjects I painted in new ways.
