PERSONAL STATEMENT – MOHD SHAZMIE MOHD ROSZALAN I graduated with a BSc (hons) of Architectural Design in September 2013 from City University College of Science and Technology (CUCST) and prior to that, I did my Diploma in Architecture Technology at same place. Ever since I was young, I had always been fascinated by the combination of art and function which architecture is made of. Though I don't find architecture easy, I enjoyed my education and work experiences very much, as it has been wonderful and rewarding.
After my graduation in Diploma in Architecture Technology in 2008, I having offered as permanent staff as an Technical Assistant Architects at same place I having internship, it was a big firm and well-known company, I have gained more experience and skill during I at this company, especially in design skill and working drawings, such as authority drawings submission, prepare presentation board for Architect and prepare concept development design with full supervision, with inquisitive nature in myself, I could develop and gained my personal interest in architecture. It was a stepping-stone for me; as I had just graduated and needed an insight to the real world. After 1 year and half at SA Architects Sdn Bhd, I get offered working at abroad in Doha, Qatar with Muhibbah Engineering (M) Bhd, which is responsibility to construct for Catering Facilities building for New Doha International Airport. For me it was great opportunity to grab it, I never dream for working abroad before, this is such as valuable experience, even this a bit different with my role of study and field before, but there are still same root of construction industrial and for me this is new experience to learn, explore and gained my knowledge. My position as an Junior Planner under planning and control department, I have to in-charge and responsibilities in-term of daily, weekly and monthly construction progress report this is regular work, beside that I have to monitor site of progress such as structure work and architectural work to make sure all work in scheduling and in order. At the same time I have to coordinate with sub-contractor work and attend site meeting to report work progress to my head of department to make sure all work in track and follow the master of scheduling made. Even this is a new experience and environment; for me I try to catch-up everything I have to and develop my credibility to my head of department. Mr Rewa Mahar, his Head of department, whereas much helping me and give point to teach me about and method of planning and control in construction industrial. I’ve been success make him impress during in the supervision and intention by himself. After through all the assessment and task given, I could handle the works and responsibilities with minimal supervisions. Working in constructions field its enhance my knowledge and experience in-term of construction method, planning and scheduling construction work, and technical knowledge in every aspect such as structure system, m&e, piping work and architectural work, all kind of this make me develop and increase in-term of technical knowledge and construction method. After 1 year and half in Doha, Qatar, I make decision to back homeland, Malaysia; for further study. Before I pursue my study, I choose temporary working at medium architect firm in Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur; this is purposely to polish and call back my design skill and gained back my experience in architecture practice, because architecture is my personal interest and my major future to become professional architect. When i was in this firm, I’ve been handling with several proposal projects, such as medium till medium-high scale projects. I have do more residential and commercial work, with preparing schematic and planning design, liaised with local authority to make sure design complied with regulation, and liaising with other consultant and client by attended the progress meeting. After I did my practice work, I decided to pursue my undergraduate study with major study of Bsc.(hons) Architectural design at City University College of Science and Technology (CUCST) for 2 years, with holding Diploma in Architecture Technology before, I have qualified to enrol as second year study with exemption subjects. With leveraging past experience, I did extensive study with diligent and work hard. I give my full commitment through my study with helping and guided by experience lecturer. On September 22, 2013, I was awarded as best student by PAM (Malaysian Associated Architects) during annual exhibition students work. With persistence and diligent in my study I have completed my study with impressive accomplishment. I developed a strong interest in sustainable and green design especially that I had implement in my architecture design work and make research about Dr Ken Yeang work, who is the pioneer of sustainable design in Asia. And make some case studies and research studies about Bjarke Ingels, who is the well-known Architect from Denmark, his work give me significant ideas through my project studio and new soul in designing factors and
process. I believe environmental aspects should be a major part of the designing process, it benefits not only the users but to the environment as well. Malaysia is slightly behind in sustainable technology and I have ambitious plans to introduce the latest sustainable technology to Malaysia and implement it into my design when I practice in Malaysia professionally. I believe this will satisfy my personal interest in architecture and also fulfills my desire of having a job dedicated to help the society. I’m currently continued working at same firm before. I love travel, because travel brings power and love back into our life. I’ve been to China, there was well known as emperor dynasty one time, I visit the historical place such as Forbidden City, The Great wall and The palace, there was great Chinese architecture influence. Then I’ve been travel to Doha,Qatar which my work place. And I’ve been travel to Brisbane and Gold Coast, Australia, it such wonderful country with nicely planning development and city, I love visit this country because of this country more particularly develop with ecosystem living and nature with modernism influence through their buildings. It is a very humbling experience, I have always love venturing because I’ve discovering that more I got at foreign places and learning different history and culture, and make me understand my own roots and come from. My travel has also helped me develop good background knowledge in this scope of area.
