As we present our Philanthropy Report for the 2020/2021 school year, these are the over-arching sentiments that we feel: gratitude for the incredible generosity that continues to characterize the Shawnigan Lake School community; inspiration drawn from the exciting and ambitious Project Future strategic vision that is being so eagerly embraced and supported by parents, alumni, students, and staff; and hope that these powerful forces can combine to bring progress and positive contributions to our local and global communities.

The enviable legacy that we have inherited from generations of past Shawnigan Lake School donors and volunteers offers an extraordinary opportunity for our School to step forward as a leader in preparing students for the challenges that lay ahead. Through innovation and adaptability, we can spark minds, kindle hearts, and forge futures that will be a powerful force for good in the world, and we are blessed to have our community stand with us on that mission.

You will see in this publication that philanthropic support has enabled us to respond to the challenges of the pandemic with a thorough and thoughtful approach. We are extending support to those impacted by the pandemic, developing financial aid and scholarships to build access and diversity, enhancing key programs within the Shawnigan Journey, prioritizing student and staff health and wellness, and upgrading facilities to further develop our campus as such a positive place of learning and development.

Looking forward with Project Future as our guiding light, there is much more good work to be done, and the 2021/2022 school year will see many more exciting developments arising from our ambitious plans.

All of this is made possible thanks to the generous support of our community. Parent participation in philanthropy has increased markedly in response to our call for spirit meals, House and Arena upgrades, and support for a broad base of initiatives that generated incalculable positive energy during a challenging year. Looking forward, donors are already embracing key strategic initiatives, such as our pioneering co-educational Grade 8 boarding house, and pledging leadership support for Project Future plans.

It is an exciting time to be part of the Shawnigan community, and we are deeply grateful for the generosity that continues to help visions become reality.

HEAD'S MESSAGE

L

ooking back over the past year, it strikes me that we have adapted, innovated, collaborated and accelerated at a pace that occasionally surprises even ourselves.

Throughout the pandemic we have done what we do best here at Shawnigan: teaching the next generation, creating a nurturing home-awayfrom-home environment, and providing impactful opportunities to build confidence and experience.

And we have come together as a community with students at the centre of attention.

In early 2021, we launched our strategic plan, Project Future, and it now serves as our North Star.

As part of the consultation process, we created a new purpose for the School: Inspire the best in each to create the best for all. This speaks to our role as educators to inspire each individual with the hope and expectation that they will, in turn, improve the world around us.

In recent weeks, we invited members of the Shawnigan community, past and present, to write a tribute to their person, advocate and champion whilst at the School and we have been overwhelmed by the number and nature of the responses. Earlier this week, I looked through the letters from our current students to members of staff – from teachers to the laundry team to the housekeepers – and was struck by the gratitude expressed by our students. The letters also stood as testament to the calibre of the people who work here and inspire our students, day in, day out.

Our focus and success in broadening access to the School demonstrate that we have not allowed the pandemic to distract us from our commitment to attracting students with potential, irrespective of their background. As Head, I remain wholeheartedly committed to developing the deliberate diversity of our campus and am thrilled by the number of donors who are stepping forward to ensure that Shawnigan is accessible and welcoming to students of all backgrounds.

The generosity of spirit flowing from our philanthropic supporters in this historic time has been inspiring and has set the stage for Shawnigan to emerge from this period of global adversity stronger than ever. From the success of the Founder’s Fund, which continues to ensure that no students are unable to return home to Shawnigan due to pandemic impacts, to the outpouring of support for health and wellness initiatives on campus, we have so many reasons to be grateful. This is a direct result of the generous donations and moral support provided by over 500 parents, alumni, staff, and Board members, past and present.

Thank you for your ongoing support of our School and your continued active participation – it means a great deal to all of us.

R

eflecting on the 2020/2021 school year, it is clear that we are living through an historic time as a society generally and at Shawnigan Lake School specifically. The impacts of the persistent worldwide pandemic, climate-related weather events, and broad-based societal change are widely felt by our students and our broader community. In this context, the progress we are achieving as an educational institution and the inspiring foresight presented by Project Future bring reassurance that we are contributing to a better future through Shawnigan’s values of Curiosity, Community, Compassion, and Courage.

Our School continues to adapt in a rapidly changing and fast-paced world, developing our educational vision based on experiential, inquiry-based learning that is deliberate in fostering curiosity, critical thinking, agility and resilience. I encourage everyone to connect with Project Future’s strategic pillars of Academic Excellence, Co-Curricular Distinction, and Student Life Unparalleled, which inform and uphold our efforts to deliver the very best Shawnigan Journey for all students. Our foundations of Community and Financial Resilience, as demonstrated in this Philanthropy Report, greatly enhance these worthy pursuits and enable us to maximize our positive impact in the world.

I have treasured the time spent over the past year working collaboratively with fellow Board members, the leadership team, staff, and Shawnigan’s parents and alumni to guide the School forward. Navigating the COVID-19 pandemic has introduced new challenges that require tremendous levels of extra thought and planning, and it has been a labour of love.

Throughout the pandemic we have seen many facets of society, some disheartening, but the experience we have shared at Shawnigan has generated hope and gratitude that is felt throughout the entire School community.

In the end, the secret sauce is our collective passion for Shawnigan and commitment to the success and happiness of students. I keep pinching myself that I get to serve alongside a Head of School and staff who give their all, a Board that continues to delight with its engagement and love of the School, and a community that is so generously supportive of our cause.

PARENT PERSPECTIVE

A

s I reflect back on our decision to send our son to Shawnigan Lake School, I’m reminded of the incredible first impression we had of the School and how we wondered if it was truly possible to deliver such an incredible educational experience.

Without a doubt, Shawnigan exceeded our expectations in every way. Although we were not necessarily seeking a boarding school, we toured Shawnigan on the recommendation of a friend and never looked back.

While the focus for many traditional schools is strictly academic, what impressed us is that Shawnigan goes beyond merely academics to develop the entire person through athletics, the arts, as well as experiential learning, in equal measure. It was important to us that our child’s education entailed more than sitting in a classroom all day. As Lisa Heimbecker with her son James '21 (Duxbury) and husband John most Shawnigan graduates will say, it is not necessarily the classes they remember but the extraordinary experiences such as enthusiastically singing their House hymn in Chapel, spending time off campus together during Ski Week or counting salmon hatchlings. Little did we expect that boarding at Shawnigan Lake School would be a life-changing experience for our son (and us!), but the four years spent at Shawnigan have moulded him into a confident, compassionate person with a strong sense of community.

Our passion for Shawnigan is at the heart of our decision to support the School philanthropically. We recognize that tuition mainly covers the basics and that for Shawnigan to continue offering experiences that are “above and beyond,” support is needed from the community. “Support” takes many shapes; offering time, talent or monetary donations all lend great impact on the School’s ability to deliver. Being able to ensure each and every Shawnigan student has an exemplary experience and the ability to reach beyond the academic component found in conventional education settings are the ultimate goals.

Looking to the future, the direction the School is moving in is an exciting one! With programs such as Beyond the Gates in Grade 9, Shawnigan has yet again shown its uniqueness in developing programming that is catapulting the School into the stratosphere with regard to experiential learning. By incorporating unique outdoor experiences into the curriculum, students are able to learn “outside of the box,” further challenging themselves and growing as individuals. With a more holistic experience, our students will not only have the academic success they’ve worked hard for, but they will be compassionate, well-rounded individuals better prepared for our ever-changing world.

My call to action is for every Shawnigan Lake School family to feel inspired to contribute to the School to ensure these extraordinary experiences continue for years to come. Time, talent, service in the community and financial donations are all equally Lisa Heimbecker important. PROJECT FUTURE

P

roject Future, Shawnigan's strategic plan, is energizing our School community and building momentum around our key strategic pillars of Academic Excellence, Co-Curricular Distinction, and Student Life Unparalleled.

Academic Excellence The Bruce-Lockhart Fellowship for Academic Excellence was launched in September with the English Department welcoming our first Fellow, Lisa Jokivirta from Finland.

The Beyond the Gates experiential outdoor education program launched as a pilot project in September 2021 for 20 Grade 9 students who are taking their learning to the great outdoors throughout the school year.

Through the support of several grateful parents, the Learning Centre received a major upgrade in spring 2021, including new furniture, learning resources, a lounge/kitchen area, a “zen den” and infrastructure updates to allow for a better specialized learning environment.

Beyond the Gates studing shoreline ecology while hiking the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail on the west coast of Vancouver Island Co-Curricular Distinction On the edge of Lake Omar, the Growing Dome, kindly donated by the Brew Creek Centre in Whistler, has already become an iconic part of the Shawnigan landscape. This geodesic dome strengthens the connection between our students and the environment while educating them about food sustainability and security as well as their own health.

A broad-based fundraising campaign among hockey parents led to major upgrades to the interior of the Charlie Purdey Arena, setting the stage for an improved athletic and spectator experience.

Next up, a new Sport Village will soon be constructed between the Charlie Purdey Arena and the Sportsplex, featuring outdoor basketball, hockey, foursquare, soccer, pickleball, and lots of open-access recreational options.

Student Life Unparalleled Garth Friesen '87 (Ripley's) helped us breathe new life into the Student Centre and raise student spirits at the turn of the year through the introduction of Duke’s Café and other significant Friesen Centre upgrades, including new furniture and lighting, student artwork, gourmet coffees, baked goods and healthy snacks, all enhancing student life.

Seeking to bring joy to a challenging year, many parents stepped forward to fund special Spirit Meals, both in the boarding houses and Marion Hall.

Building upon the development of Stanton and Levien Houses, which provide a caring and nurturing landing pad for youngest students, plans are underway to construct a new Grade 8 co-educational boarding house with distinct wings for boys and girls and congregating spaces in the middle, to be opened 2023/24. More details coming soon!

With the support of current parents, upgrades in our existing boarding houses were completed in summer 2021, including infrastructure upgrades, common room furniture, and outdoor gathering spaces such as barbeques, fire pits, and gardens.

Underpinning Project Future's pillars of Inspiring Academic Excellence, Innovating for Co-Curricular Distinction and Imagining Student Life unparalleled is our commitment as an institution to Financial Resilience. This has most recently been realized through the Founder’s Fund, which is providing much-needed support for families heavily impacted by COVID-19 and ensuring that all students are able to return to Shawnigan regardless of financial circumstance. This fund was supported by 100% of Shawnigan’s Board and Foundation Members and many generous parents and staff. In addition, our broader financial aid and scholarship funds ensure that donors' contributions are helping families most needing assistance to access Shawnigan. Looking ahead, discussions are underway with multiple donors to establish new major scholarships, particularly with a focus on families that need the most support, building the socioeconomic, cultural, and general diversity that is so valued at Shawnigan.

ALUMNUS PERSPECTIVE

F

or Carl Wright Bradley ’78 (Groves’), Shawnigan Lake School is family. Stories from his time at the School bring a smile to his face and direct links to his life path. To say that his Shawnigan connection remains strong would be a massive understatement.

When Carl’s father passed away in his Grade 8 year, then Headmaster Hugh Wilkinson committed to seeing Carl through to graduation, come what may. In the ensuing years, he was invited to pursue his passions, challenged to excel, and prepared for life beyond the gates of Shawnigan.

In his Grade 10 year, working with cherished teacher and mentor Lance Bean, Carl was given responsibility for the Shawnigan Lake School Jazz Orchestra, a 21-piece stage band. He began learning the skills necessary to move projects forward to their full potential.

Describing the experience as a collaborative effort, Carl says “we were all there for the same outcome.” A visit to Little Mountain Sound Recording Studio in Vancouver energized Carl’s inspiration, and he described this first access to a recording studio as “a jaw dropping, eureka moment.” The atmosphere created such excitement that he knew from that point on that he wanted to be in that creative environment; it was a life changing experience.

The next phase of Carl’s journey was spent pursuing this passion, from his studies at the College for Recording Arts and Sciences in San Francisco to his work as a sound engineer at Pinewood Studios in Vancouver, BC. These pursuits later inspired the development of Shawnigan’s Communications, Arts, Sciences, and Entrepreneurship programs, known as C.A.S.E., which are all about creativity, innovation, solving real-world problems, and turning ideas and projects into solutions that fulfill a need in society. Carl also jumped into the cosmetics industry, applying the same creative product development process to achieve marked results. He credits the courage to expand his horizons and pursue new opportunities with the breadth of experience and opportunity he was given at Shawnigan.

Carl defines luck as “when opportunity meets desire” and, by 2007, he had developed a successful product development company where many products were developed and co-developed, and subsequently acquired by companies such as Proctor & Gamble, Philips and others. Subsequently, he found himself in a position to form The Bradley Family Foundation.

The first grant from his newly established family Foundation was to Shawnigan, following through on a decision that he had made at graduation. “I knew how important the School was to me, and I decided that one day, somehow, someway, I would find a way to give back. We must remember how privileged we are to be at Shawnigan.”

Since that first grant from Carl’s Foundation, which helped establish and name the present Hugh Wilkinson Theatre, to today’s C.A.S.E. funding that matches all donations up to $100,000 annually for Shawnigan’s applied arts programs, Carl’s motivation is to create and nurture pathways to success at Shawnigan and beyond. Whether for robotics, music, filmmaking, the working theatre, photography, coding, graphic design, and much more, these programs offer students clear paths to future careers in quickly expanding fields. This is best done by encouraging student agency, creating opportunities to engage with experienced professionals and providing resources and networks for students to explore passions and potential. Through these experiences, students develop their ideas and skills to analyze, build, and launch projects before they graduate from high school.

Shawnigan’s strength in the applied arts, which has grown thanks to C.A.S.E. and the efforts of many key staff and programs, has led the School to the beginning of an exciting new era. Project Future, our recently launched strategic plan, calls for the School to “encourage creativity, inquiry-based learning, independence, initiative and a greater sense of autonomy and agency in students,” and plans are now afoot for a new home for these creative pursuits.

Through continuing C.A.S.E. support and the exciting vision outlined in Project Future, Shawnigan students continue to explore their full potential. With the community connections and philanthropic support that Carl and his Foundation have provided over the years, these experiences will lead many Shawnigan students to inspired and fulfilling futures in a world that will no doubt rely heavily on these skills for many years to come.

Students, staff, alumni, Board members and industry experts have been collaborating to envision a new space for our C.A.S.E. and applied arts programs. We are delighted to announce that we have appointed globally renowned Michael Green Architects to develop this concept. Please stay tuned for updates over the coming months.

Duxbury Quad and Peter's Pavilion came in my first year here and have been the most popular spaces at Duxbury since. I can recall countless hours of soccer and volleyball in the quad with the guys and many nights grilling burgers and spending time with everyone. All the guys love to spend time in the outdoor space, it definitely will be cherished by future Duxbury boys and be a part of Duxbury forever.

Renfrew has always been more than just a building – it's been a home, one constantly overflowing with laughter, love and sisterhood.

And this year, Renfrew feels even warmer and cozier than we could have ever imagined, with stunning new furniture that brings so much joy. DUKE'S CAFE & THE FRIESEN CENTRE

Everyone is extremely grateful for the new space where we can hang out, play board games, study, and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere. To me, Duke's is an escape because of the renovation. The atmosphere is so different from the rest of Shawnigan that it feels like an escape from your day to day routine. Duke's is a well loved space that is very appreciated and an integral part of the Shawnigan experience.

The Growing Dome allows us to take the knowledge that we learned in science classes and apply it outside of a typical classroom experience.

It also allows us to learn how to be sustainable with the resources that the Earth provides us. Often, my SPUD (Sustainable Produce Under Dome) friends and I like to spend time and do our prep in the Growing Dome because we enjoy the ambience of the space.

GRADE 8 PROGRAM

S

tarting at a new school can be a daunting experience, even for the most confident of kids – make it a boarding school and it can be even more so. It is certainly a decision that is not easy and sometimes it is the parents that struggle the most with it. By creating an experience that is a landing pad for our youngest students as they start at the School, we have developed a bespoke program that will ultimately be a launchpad to their journey at Shawnigan Lake School.

What initially started off as a short-term solution to the challenge of accommodating an influx of students in 2017, Stanton House, named after the first school nurse Eleanor Stanton who was at the School from 1918 to 1962, was established as the first boarding house dedicated to Grade 8 girls at Shawnigan. Fast forward to the present day where circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic saw the need to reduce the number of students in the boarding houses, leading to the decision to move the Grade 8 boys to a separate House. Levien House was born, named after Senior Master and colleague of Eleanor’s from 1920 through the 1930’s, Captain ‘Tiny" Levien.

Now, the Grade 8 program has evolved, with two Houses and specific programming designed exclusively for Grade 8s.

Students coming to Shawnigan have a dedicated starting point, laying the foundation for their Shawnigan Journey. The program is shaping these young students by building their confidence, self-esteem, and curiosity and preparing them for their next four years at the School, while allowing them to stay young just a little bit longer. The nurturing environment offered in the Grade 8 Houses, overseen by compassionate, warm, welcoming and supportive staff, allows them to be themselves as they get used to life at boarding school.

The objective behind the Grade 8 program is twofold: to allow students to have a positive start at the School, surrounded by peers who are at the same stage mentally and emotionally, and to "Levien has been a wonderful experience for our son build and foster friendships that will stay with them as they split into so far. COMMUNITY SPIRIT

T

he Shawnigan family that we have come to know and love includes students, staff, alumni, local community – and parents. Together, we share a commitment to providing our students with a deeper understanding of the world, leading to greater compassion for others, one of Shawnigan's core values. Over the years, we have seen students share unique family customs and traditions with our community, often during a Saturday Chapel service. We welcome these opportunities to learn more about our families and expand our knowledge. What makes the Shawnigan family unique and special is knowing and understanding our whole community; as a boarding school representing thirty-five countries across six continents, diversity is our strength.

Developing partnerships with our parents is essential to the School's success.

The pandemic forced us to be creative and innovative in connecting with our families, including hosting virtual gatherings over Zoom. Although not a replacement for in-person meetings, these adaptations temporarily allowed us to stay engaged with our extended community. With travel restrictions easing this fall, our team has started to meet parents in person again, travelling to some Canadian and US cities. Building these partnerships is essential to maintaining a strong community.

The monthly virtual Board meeting offers updates from the Student Life Office by Matt Clinton-Baker, Assistant Head – Student Life. As much as we as parents rely on news from our children, these meetings offer much information about current happenings on campus and essential information regarding school breaks, travel, and health and wellness. On behalf of the Advancement and Community Engagement team, I also attnd regularly and share initiatives focused on Project Future, Shawnigan's new strategic plan. Finally, the SPA Executive, a dedicated team of volunteers, offers invaluable resources to support and guide you through your child's Shawnigan journey.

Our Head of School, Larry Lamont, and the Board of Governors have set an exciting vision for Shawnigan's future. Our team is eager to share this vision with you, the goals and initiatives planned to take Shawnigan from being one of Canada's top schools to an internationally respected institution. We need you, our parents, and most significant supporters of the School, to help us share this new strategic direction. There has never been a time when building engagement with our parent community worldwide has been more critical than now. You are part of what makes the Shawnigan community special, and we invite you to reach out to a member of our team to learn how you can participate in Shawnigan's future.

rom its founding, the Shawnigan Lake School community has been asked to give back to their School under the service-oriented leadership of C.W. Lonsdale – a culture that is alive and thriving today, as shown in this Philanthropy Report. We are grateful to the many benefactors who have given back to the School since its founding in 1916, particularly those that have joined the Legacy Society by leaving a gift in their will.

This year I am proud to introduce Robert Sharman '73 (Groves’), who has kindly volunteered to assist the School in expanding its Legacy Program. As an early advocate and contributor to the Legacy Gift program, Robert is volunteering his time to help other families consider their estate plans. As a recently retired Senior Vice President and Senior Wealth Advisor for BMO Nesbitt Burns, Robert not only brings a wealth of experience to this volunteer role but does so with no personal business interest in the discussion, making him a wonderful source of advice.

This can include attracting and retaining students from a wide cross-section of society as a result of creating an Endowment Fund for a scholarship or bursary.
