April has been recognized nationally as Child Abuse Prevention month since 1983. Every year, in the month of April, organizations nationwide promote public events designed to engage communities in combatting child abuse and neglect. The Children’s Bureau organizes a national conference and this year’s theme is “Building Community, Building Hope.” This theme acknowledges the role and power local communities have in preventing and addressing child abuse/neglect. The purpose of Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) child welfare services division is to improve the safety, permanence and well-being of children and families involved in the Child Welfare system through collaboration with the families and their community. Pottawatomie County is leading the state in community collaboration. In 2012, DHS identified Pottawatomie County to pilot a community collaboration project. Through the commitment of numerous private individuals and both public and private organizations within the county, The Pottawatomie County Child Welfare Collaborative was formed. Since that time, the community has seen and felt the impact of this group, from projects in south Pottawatomie County schools to The Children and the Law Conference taking place on April 12th at The Heart of Oklahoma Expo Center. The message of Child Abuse Prevention is: all members of the community have a role to play. Throughout Pottawatomie County, we see public and private investment into protecting children and promoting family wellbeing. There is opportunity for everyone in the community to actively participate in this mission. DHS and other partners are actively engaged

in recruiting foster homes statewide. There are currently 286 children from Pottawatomie County in state custody. Only 144 of those children are living with a family in Pottawatomie County. It is crucial these children maintain a connection with their communities. Unfortunately, there are not enough foster families within the county to meet these needs. DHS welcomes members of the community to inquire about opening their homes and becoming a foster family. If you are interested, please contact Betty Laney, a foster care recruiter, at 405-214-4117. Additionally, Pottawatomie County has an active Court Appointed Special Advocate program housed at the Youth and Family Resource Center. CASAs play an important role in advocating for children and families within the court system. Volunteering at local schools, civic clubs, and in churches can also help prevent child abuse/neglect. Please remember, every person has a responsibility to report suspected child abuse/neglect at 1-800-522-3511 and/or to local law enforcement. Our community thrives when our children and families are leading safe, healthy, independent and productive lives. Everyone has the opportunity to be a part of strengthening and building our community. This April, when you see a pinwheel in a yard, or a blue ribbon on a tree, please consider joining in the efforts to eliminate child abuse/neglect.
