This month, we celebrate the nation’s birthday with picnics, barbeques and fireworks. Since we moved to Ohio almost five years ago, we have started a tradition of having a big gathering with family, friends and neighbors. I also love that we don’t have to travel far to see fireworks only to get stuck in traffic on the way home because we have quite the show right here in our neighborhood. I hope your holiday is full of fun, love and memories.
As always, please keep the magazine in mind when you have a story, article to share, or a business you want to advertise!

Get to know your neighbor…the Tibbs family of Indianbrook! Damian and Brooke live with their three children, Amia, Dreyden, and Dominic, as well as their Labradoodle, Khei, on Tolowa Trail. They have lived in the neighborhood for six years. “We feel we are in one of the best neighborhoods, yet we are not far from all we could need. Having the reservoirs close by is nice as well,” explained Damian. “It is where we got engaged and the reservoirs are also special because we enjoy walking the dog (and he loves jumping in), sledding, and fishing. This is also where we saw the recent eclipse and Northern Lights in May,” commented Brooke.
Damian was born in Cleveland, Ohio and moved to Lima when he was one year old. He has six siblings and graduated from Shawnee High School. In his early thirties he had kidney failure. Two years after his diagnosis Damian was blessed to receive a kidney from his half-brother, Carlos, and his health is doing quite well now! Currently, Damian is an Allen County Sheriff’s Deputy and the
pastor of New Life Christian Ministries. In addition, he is a school resource officer in many schools around Allen County. Brooke was born and raised here in Lima. She has five siblings and went to Elida Schools until eighth grade. She was then homeschooled from eighth-twelfth grades. Brooke earned an associate’s degree in graphic design and is currently the childrens’ and teens’ pastor at New Life Christian Ministries. In addition, she is also a homeschooling mother.
Damian and Brooke met through the church and Damian’s parents in March 2003, and were married that November. About eight years ago they were commissioned to take over
their church, Damian’s dad was the previous pastor, and have been serving the congregants and community ever since! In the Lima community they take part in the National Day of Prayer. In addition, every summer Damian and Brooke are involved in a ministry called Compel, which takes place in Lima’s Town Square or the church’s neighborhood. “We pray for those we see out. We hand out food and ice cream treats, we clean the streets, and we tell people about our church and Jesus. We are trying to bring life and the Lord to our community,” commented Damian.
Amia, Dreyden, and Dominic have all been homeschooled for the past four years. Amia will be in eleventh grade, Dreyden will be in seventh grade, and Dominic will be in second grade. “I enjoy the flexibility of homeschooling, spending more precious time with the kids, and imparting godly wisdom in my lessons,” said Brooke. Outside of school Amia takes ballet, pointe ballet, and jazz at Dancer by Gina. “She is doing very well and the yearly recitals are phenomenal!” An exciting milestone has also happened for Amia…she recently received her driver’s license. Both Dreyden and Dominic take karate at Lear’s Martial Arts School. Dreyden has his junior black belt and recently won second place in sparring, as well as fourth place in kata at an out-of-town tournament. Dominic is just starting karate. He is a white belt, but will soon earn his yellow belt. He recently earned the Student of the Month award at his martial arts school!
The Tibbs family enjoys traveling to Nashville, Gatlinburg, and Atlanta to visit family members. They also love to go to the beach, with Gulf Shores, Alabama being a favorite. “We love it there! The beaches are pristine and white, while the ocean is crystal blue. There are colorful houses along the beach and many fun shops to visit. While there we went canoeing and took a boat ride to see the dolphins,” said Damian. When at home, the family enjoys watching movies, playing outside together, and going on field trips. Their favorite restaurants in Lima are Thai Jasmine and Cracker Barrel.
The Tibbs family is looking forward to watching the Olympics together this July. The girls are really into watching gymnas-
tics (Brooke competed all over the state growing up), and the boys are interested in watching karate. As for the Fourth of July, they will either be watching the fireworks here in Lima at Faurot Park, or they will be in Nashville visiting Brooke’s dad. Either place, the fireworks are a must for the Tibbs family!
Architon Homes and the Garrett and Seth Real Estate Team complete the first of 54 new homes to be built as part of the new Camden Ridge Community, a 21-acre development of beautiful, modern custom homes ranging from $300k-$400k.
This summer, new neighbors are calling Shawnee home as construction progresses on new custom homes in the Camden Ridge Community.
To learn more about this new neighborhood here in Shawnee, we spoke with brothers Colby and Keaton Bowman of Architon Homes, the custom home builder behind the new development.
1. What is the Camden Ridge Community?
Camden Ridge is a new community in the Shawnee School District, just outside town. Camden Ridge centers around creating distinctive, modern homes in a peaceful community at a mid-range price. The community is expected to accommodate 54 homes across its 21 acres, with 14 homes planned for the current development phase along Weldon Drive.
2. Where did the vision for the Camden Ridge Community begin?
It all started in October of 2021. We (Architon Homes) wanted to build beautiful houses that our neighbors here in Shawnee would be proud to call home, in a quiet neighborhood created so families can flourish. When we found the land now called Camden Ridge, we felt it was the perfect place. Progress has been great so far. We broke ground on the first home on Feb. 10, 2024, completed it in June, and are excited about the new homes in progress.
3. What kind of homes can you expect to see in Camden Ridge?
Every home is custom-built to fit the homeowner's vision. Across the board, you can expect quality custom homes with attractive finishes, complete with fireplaces, custom cabinets, tile showers in the master, granite or quartz countertops, unique modern design on interior and exterior, finished garages, and spacious yards and driveways along the quiet cul-de-sac. Our (Architon’s) background is in high-end remodels and detail work, so every home is built with an attention to detail that you won’t find most anywhere else.
4. Who is involved in developing the community?
Architon Homes and the Garrett and Seth Real Estate Team with Hartsock Realty have partnered to bring the community to fruition. With deep experience helping folks navigate the new construction process, Garrett and Seth are the sole realtors for the community. As the principal builder/general contractor for the new homes, Architon handles both the design and construction process.
5. Where can folks learn more about Camden Ridge?
If you would like to learn more about Camden Ridge and desire to have a conversation about building your dream home, you can go to garrettandsethrealestate.com/camdenridge, or contact Architon at 419-303-7138 or the Garrett and Seth Real Estate Team at 419-604-6625.
Architon strives to be the best builder in the area by working with the customer on all aspects of the home build, from initial design to home completion. We provide a scheduling app to you as the homeowner so you can stay updated on how your project is progressing in real time. We also keep the communication lines open to resolve any issues or discuss how the project is progressing. Architon might be a new name, but we have worked in the construction field for 20 + years, and we look forward to many more years of home building.
About the Garrett and Seth Real Estate Team
Garrett and Seth give white glove service to both buyers and sellers in the real estate buying and selling process. They offer a free consultation appointment over coffee to anyone interested in working with them.

As you may have heard there have been many Lawsuits filed across the nation, concerning NAR best practices and compensation. NAR has agreed to a settlement which mandates the following 2 changes:
1) NAR agreed to create a new MLS (Multiple Listing Service) rule prohibiting offers of compensation on the MLS. This would mean that offers of compensation could not be communicated via an MLS, but they could continue to be an option consumers could pursue off-MLS through negotiation and consultation with real estate professionals.
2) NAR also agreed to create a new rule requiring MLS participants working with buyers to enter into written agreements with their buyers before the buyer tours a home. NAR has long encouraged its members to use written agreements to help consumers understand exactly what services and value they provide and for how much.
NAR continues to deny any wrongdoing and maintains that cooperative compensation is in the best interest of consumers. NAR members can use these changes as an opportunity to explain their clients’ options. Both changes would go into effect in midJuly under the terms of the proposed settlement (https://www.nar.realtor)
So what does that mean for you as the consumer?
First off all, local realtors have been receiving information and updates from NAR, OAR (Ohio Association of Realtors), and our local MLS, which is West Central Association of Realtors, on how this transition will occur and when it will come into affect so that the transition goes smoothly for all. Second, sellers listing contracts will give the seller the opportunity to only be charged for the seller’s agency fees. Currently most listing contracts state a commission rate (this is determined by the listing agency) and the fee is usually split with the agency that brings the buyer to cover the buyer’s agency fees. Third, when the changes come into affect the buyers will sign a Buyer’s Agreement (explaining the importance of realtor representation) and a
Buyer’s Broker Compensation Agreement, explaining how the buyer’s agency is to be paid and the rate of payment. As with all contracts, the fees can be negotiated with the offer along with the price, but the decision to accept is solely up to the seller.
As always if you have questions concerning this and the process please call your local realtor or feel free to contact me.

Schoony’s
Pub served as the Official Pre-Party Pub for Summer Concerts!
Schoony’s Pub was designated as the Official Pre-Party Pub for the One Night Only concert, starring Chris Janson. Ticket giveaways happened every hour on the hour with T102 radio DJ, Rowdy Ron, and guests were even invited to throw some axes in the mobile axe-throwing cage from The Axe Cave in Delphos. Thirsty Thursdays are the regularly dedicated nights for live music at the pub in the summer, but May 16th brought someone extra special – Derek Alan. Derek is a Lima native who moved to Nashville to pursue his country music career. This was his first time back at the pub since his move and he definitely brought a crowd!
According to Schoony’s Pub bar manager, Lisa Kinninger, “To me it’s amazing to see how much Derek has grown since I knew him as the kid that would barely even talk to the crowd when he first started playing music. His growth and dedication to his music has been great to witness. I enjoy looking over at his parents, Al & Tina, as they beam with pride whenever he plays.”
Proud definitely describes the feeling of Derek’s parents when they see him perform.
“Seeing Derek perform at the Pub just feels right. It always
feels like a homecoming since it is where he first started performing acoustically and with his full band. When he performs there, he brings so many different people together. He may live in Nashville now, but I hope Lima and the pub will always feel like home,” said Tina Pignataro, Derek’s mom.
Derek Alan looked comfortable as he eased into the pub to set up the show and that transitioned to excitement and love as he welcomed a large crowd of family, friends and fans. “It was so great to be back and see everyone at the pub. I’ve been playing there for years now so it was nice to see all the same people come in and have a good time, just like we used to.”
Derek Alan also returned to Lima on June 22nd and performed his newest song, “Broke” with his Nashville band at Country Rumble, the biggest concert of the summer at the Allen County Fairgrounds by 33 West Productions and received rave reviews!
We hope Derek will always remember how much we enjoy his visits back to his hometown of Lima!
Chris Janson: One Night Only was a night to remember!
On Friday, May 17th, 2024, 33 West Productions brought Grand Ole Opry Member, Chris Janson to the Schmidthorst Pavilion at the Allen County Fairgrounds with the mission of uplifting the local economy and bringing major talent to the Allen County area!
The concert featuring Chris Janson, LANCO, Colin Stough and Dan Wallace delivered an electrifying night of country music, showcasing the talents of four distinct acts. Opening the evening was Ohio-native, Dan Wallace who made our great state proud with a gritty & raw set which included covers and a handful of originals!
Colin Stough captivated the audience with his raw, soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics, setting a warm and engaging tone. His performance, marked by a mix of original songs and covers, demonstrated his rising potential in the country music scene.
LANCO followed, bringing their high-energy performance and dynamic stage presence. Known for their rich harmonies and anthemic choruses, they played hits like “Greatest Love Story” and “Born to Love You,” which had the crowd singing along. Their seamless blend of rock and country elements created an infectious atmosphere that kept the audience on their feet especially
when the band performed multiple songs within the Stage Front VIP crowd!
Headliner Chris Janson took the stage with charisma and an undeniable command of the crowd. His set was a masterclass in contemporary country, featuring popular tracks such as “Buy Me a Boat,” “Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get,” and “Good Vibes.” Janson’s harmonica skills and energetic performance style were highlights of the night, engaging the audience from start to finish! The crowd also enjoyed seeing his ten-year-old son, Jesse Janson, rock out with his dad for a truly entertaining set. His interaction with fans and genuine enjoyment of performing made for memorable moments throughout the concert!
Overall, the concert was a well-rounded showcase of talent, offering something for every country music fan. From the heartfelt beginnings with Colin Stough to the energetic crescendo of LANCO and culminating in Chris Janson’s electrifying set, the evening was a celebration of the genre’s diversity and vitality! For the nearly 2,200 people in attendance, we know it was nothing short of a night full of incredible memories!

Gethsemani Cemetery held their annual Memorial Day Mass on May 27th, and based on the large number of attendees it has become a beloved tradition for our community. The purpose of the event is to remember and honor those that have served our country and who have passed. Prayer, song and inspirational words uplifted the audience. The most sentimental moment for guests was the reading of a little over 100 names of those that passed in 2023 and 2024. The highlight of the event was the rifle fire and cannon shooting. Guests were invited to celebrate with free hot dogs, chips, ice cream cups and drinks from Tom’s Hot Dogs after the service, compliments of Hanneman - Siferd Funeral Home. Gethsemani Cemetery is grateful to all of the sponsors that make this event possible, including Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services and Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home

1. What is Inpatient Rehab at Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Medical Center?
After surgery, illness or due to a serious health condition, a patient may require inpatient rehabilitation therapies to regain strength and abilities. The care team at St. Rita’s creates an individualized plan to help reach a patient’s health goals. These plans include round-the-clock nursing care and specialized therapies (physical, occupational, and speech/language therapy).
2. Can you tell me about some of the things that makes St. Rita’s Rehab floor unique?
Our team is incredible! Everyone collaborates for the betterment of our patients. The rehab team includes doctors, nurses, a nurse practitioner, consultants, therapists, a psychologist, a case management team, and an admissions coordinator.
The floor also has been recently renovated and includes an updated “Easy Street” which is like walking down a real street. Our amazing therapists use these storefronts to help patients get back to real life and practice daily skills such as grocery shopping or banking. There is even a functional apartment that a patient can use for one night with a family member and the additional security of medical care close by. Additionally, we have our rehab dog, Ace, who is a source of pure joy for both staff and patients and helps patients navigate taking care of their own pets at home.
3. What does a typical workday look like for you?
I start in inpatient rehab by rounding and checking on patients. I then lead team conferences to discuss patients and goals. My afternoon typically includes meeting new admissions from acute care and spending one day a week in the outpatient clinic following up with patients.
4. Why did you choose to work at Mercy Health - St. Rita’s Medical Center?
Not only am I from Lima, but I was also born at St. Rita’s and volunteered in high school. I am so appreciative to have the opportunity to serve in the community I grew up in and help patients get back to what matters most.
5. Where did you go to medical school?
I attended Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medical School, 2018. I also completed my internship at Firelands Regional Medical Center, 2019, and graduated from residency at the University of Louisville in 2022.
6. How did you choose the field of rehabilitation?
You meet people who have just experienced a traumatic or even unexpected event. The hospital part is so hard. My job in rehab helps patients figure out how to get back to their families and focus on their goals. It is a very rewarding field.
7. What do you like most about working at St. Rita’s?
The relationship with other providers is not something you find at every hospital. Everyone is always so welcoming from beginning to end and truly works together to help get patients home. The Inpatient Rehab floor is a happy place and full of good outcomes.
by Paige Fiebelkorn, President - Generations of Love
Generations of Love emerged as a beacon of hope nearly two years ago within the halls of Wapakoneta City Schools. Carrie Knoch, fueled by compassion, observed a rising tide of kinship, adoptive, and foster families within the school system. Recognizing the daunting challenges faced by these families, particularly the glaring absence of support, Carrie took decisive action. She convened a meeting, uniting various agencies, individuals serving these families, and the families themselves.
This pivotal gathering birthed the Generations of Love support group—an oasis of support for families navigating the intricate terrain of foster care and adoption.
From its inception, Generations of Love embraced a holistic ethos, acknowledging that children in foster, kinship, and adoptive care required as much support as their caregivers. The weekly meetings held faithfully every Thursday from 6-7 PM, provide a sanctuary where families can share experiences, offer nonjudgmental advice, and access vital resources. Childcare, engaging activities, and dinner are provided, fostering a profound sense of community, and belonging. Anyone can receive services, regardless of location. Currently, families and individuals from Auglaize, Mercer, Allen, Van Wert and Shelby counties are being served.
However, the most remarkable chapter in Generations of Love’s saga unfolded when the organization was bestowed with an extraordinary opportunity—a dedicated building to call its own. This transformative milestone was made possible by the munificence of an investment group in Wapakoneta, recognizing the organization’s indispensable role in the community and rallying to support its mission. This benevolent gesture endowed Generations of Love with a permanent haven—a sanctum where families could congregate, receive support, and access essential resources.
outpouring of support extended beyond mere words. Virtually everything within the edifice, from game systems to furniture, renovations, and items for the care closet, were donated by the community. It was a testament to the collective spirit of generosity and compassion that suffused Wapakoneta—a community unified in its resolve to uplift and empower vulnerable children and families.
Armed with a dedicated space and an abundance of community support, Generations of Love embarked on a journey of expansion, introducing an array of programs and services to meet the diverse needs of families in crisis.
As the group matured, it identified ancillary needs within the community, resulting in the establishment of various programs aimed at assuaging crises and nurturing the well-being of children and families:
At the heart of Generations of Love lies its care closet, operating ceaselessly to meet crisis needs. Whether it be furnishings, hygiene items, clothing, or school supplies, the closet stands ready to furnish immediate assistance, particularly during placements or emergencies.
Acknowledging the profound impact of simple gestures, volunteers undertake the delivery of hot meals to families in need, alleviating burdens during times of distress.
Recognizing the dire need for a sanctuary, Generations of Love prioritizes the provision of beds to children bereft of a place to call their own. Through collaborative endeavors with organizations and individuals, the aim is to furnish frames, mattresses, pillows, and sheets gratis.
Generations of Love endeavors to enrich the lives of children through music and art therapy, courtesy of a generous grant. These innovative modalities not only provide therapeutic outlets but also facilitate emotional expression and connection, empowering youth to explore their creativity.
In an effort to empower youth aged 12-17, Generations of Love is on the cusp of unveiling a comprehensive resource center. Scheduled to debut imminently, the center will offer an array of services, encompassing transportation, tutoring, life skills training, recreational activities, and music and art therapy. With an emphasis on equipping youth with essential life skills and fostering holistic development, the resource center epitomizes the organization’s commitment to nurturing resilience and fostering growth.
In a pioneering initiative, Generations of Love is poised to inaugurate the first supervised visitation center outside of traditional child welfare agencies. Conceived as a welcoming home environment, the center aims to provide a secure space for families, ensuring meaningful interactions under vigilant supervision.
In the not-too-distant future, Generations of Love anticipates augmenting its roster of services with the addition of a community respite center.
Buoyed by these expansions, Generations of Love extends its reach to encompass at-risk youth, offering comprehensive support to nurture their potential. This initiative is due to the community’s unwavering commitment to uplifting vulnerable children and families, irrespective of geographical constraints.
Generations of Love’s remarkable odyssey stands as a testament to the transformative power of community and collective action. It is a narrative suffused with compassion, resilience, and hope—a testament to what can be achieved when individuals unite in support of a common cause.
Generations of Love beckons individuals, volunteers, and donors alike to join hands in this noble pursuit. Together, we can effect profound change in the lives of those most in need.
Generations of Love: where every child and family discovers their village—a community united by love, compassion, and an unwavering belief in the promise of brighter tomorrows.
Generations of Love operates on the principle of community involvement and collaboration. Volunteers, donors, and concerned individuals are implored to contribute their time, resources, or expertise to further the organization’s mission. I’m in China for six weeks on the second of three planned trips to the country. In this report, I’ll describe some of the ways day-to-day life here differs from living in Ohio. In my next report, I’ll describe the highlights of my trips.
Though I’ve always known China was a populous country, I never appreciated the scale until I got here. I’m in Shenzhen now, which is adjacent to Hong Kong. The total population of the “Bay Area” is about 50 million. Beijing is 22 million. One of my students described growing up in a “small town” of 400,000.
There is less suburban sprawl here than you might think. Growth is upward in high rises. The population density makes possible all kinds of conveniences. Within 10 minutes walking distance from my apartment are two malls, a Walmart, a CostCo, a train station, and probably 200+ restaurants. And I can use my phone to have food delivered in under 20 minutes.
It’s hard to generalize about Chinese food. Each Chinese province has its own unique cuisine and specialty, from Beijing noodles (basically, spaghetti with meat sauce) to Cantonese slow-boiled soup to Sichuan’s peppers which numb the inside of your mouth. Nearly everything is bite-sized. Vegetables/mushrooms and noodles/rice are the bulk of most meals,
except for formal or sit-down restaurant dining in which meat takes center stage.
Here's one of my favorite food ideas. Refrigerated bins hold 30 types of veggies/mushrooms, 10 types of noodles, and 10 types of protein. You use tongs to select what you want and put it all in a bowl. You take the bowl to the cooking station, hand it over, and specify whether you want stir-fry or soup. It will not surprise you that tea is a big deal here. What might surprise you is the price. Tea in China is like wine in France. It can be cheap, or it can be very, very expensive. Every street has at least one storefront tea store, and every tea store has several packages of tea that, by weight, cost more than gold. Like wine, there are several core varietals of tea (black, green, white, oolong, pu’er, herbal). Also like wine, the best tea has terroir – the specific place it is grown, with particular soil/climate imparting a unique taste. And of course the best tea is aged, often for 10-15 years.
As a still-developing country, China would have a difficult time catching up to us on many technologies, so it has leapfrogged us instead. A high-speed rail system permits round-trip day trips in a 600mile radius for less than $150. China is skipping the internal-combustion engine and going straight to EV automobiles – and is eating Detroit’s lunch so badly the U.S. has imposed a 100% tariff to protect the auto industry. And unlike U.S. airports which have grown in fits and starts over many years, and consequently often resemble a cornfield maze, Chinese airports are thoughtfully designed to make travel seamless.
I haven’t used cash or a credit card, or carried my wallet, since I arrived. Everything is on my phone. With one app, I can buy anything anywhere, from plane tickets to a piece of fruit from a street vendor. Again, the Chinese have leapfrogged our antiquated cash/ banking/credit card technology and have gone completely digital. Banks and credit card companies never became entrenched in the consumer market here, and so haven’t held back progress to protect their fees.
If you don’t like being photographed, don’t come to China. CCTV cameras are everywhere. They are in high-rise elevators, at every traffic light, and even inside taxicabs.
On the upside, it’s very safe and convenient. Facialrecognition technology breezes you through airport security, unlocks doors everywhere, and guarantees safety. On the other hand, it’s a bit creepy. No one reviews all that video, unless there’s a traffic accident or a crime to investigate. But within a few years, artificial intelligence will make it easy to search all that video and track a person’s every move outside the home. And of course the money app discussed above already “knows” every purchase you make anywhere.
In a country of 1.4 billion people, there is nowhere to hide.

From Patsy Cline’s to Willie Nelson’s versions and on down the lyrical line of songs about Texas’ San Antonio area, San Antonio Rose ranks highly as describing the Alamo adjacent city as a moonlit enchanted setting, romantic and idyllically ideal for lovers and travelers who enjoy rustic settings surrounded by historical aura and the allure of modern amenities. Savoring their own lone star state souvenir memory, Linda and Dave Dorley, 28 year natives of Shawnee’s Putters Lane, with a remodeled kitchen two times its former size, welcome serving this recipe they gleaned from San Antonio’s Riverwalk Boudro Bistro, where the guacamole is made fresh at the guests’ table.
Guacamole Boudro
(Ready in 15 minutes to allow for chopping time, to serve 6 to 8)
Ingredients:
• 1 orange
• 2 limes
• 4-6 avocados
• 1 Roma tomato, roasted and diced
• 2 Serrano peppers, roasted, seeded, and diced
• 4 Tablespoons red onions diced
• ½ cup fresh cilantro, chopped
• 1 teaspoon sea salt
• 1 garlic clove, chopped (optional)
Directions:
Squeeze juice from orange and lime into bowl. Scoop avocado from skin, add to bowl, and coarsely chop. Add tomato, peppers, onion, garlic, and cilantro, and fold into avocado mixture. Add salt to taste. The finished product should be crudely chopped, not mashed.
Linda adds that, to save time, you can forgo roasting the tomato and peppers, without sacrificing the delicious taste.
Retired couple Linda and husband, Dave enjoy serving this appealing dish as an appetizer with corn chips like Tostitos, when entertaining friends and family that may include their three grown children, nine grandchildren, and clubmates like Lima’s Art Study club, in which Linda invests an active interest and energized membership. Example of the latter: Linda’s love of art exhibited in this colorful and eyecatching guacamole presentation, in any bowl, with any chip!

Dogs and cats can flaunt some beautiful colors on their fur. From midnight blacks to snowy whites, the hues of many household pets make them gorgeously unique. Even though we are more used to the typical neutral colors of our pets’ fur, some critters have chosen to sport more vibrant tones. In 2021, a pack of dogs was spotted roaming about Russia. Though stray dogs are nothing out of the usual, what made these puppers interesting was that they all had bright, sky-blue fur. The dogs were taken into a veterinary clinic, where it was determined that they were all perfectly healthy, and had likely had their blue mishap when they were exposed to chemicals in an abandoned factory where they lived. In any case, the pups’ fluorescent fur ended up being a blessing, as many of them were adopted soon after. Similarly in Bulgaria, townsfolk one day found one of their local street cats looking a little different. The kitty had somehow gained beautiful emerald green fur that made her look like a character straight out of a fairy tale. It turned out that the cat had fallen asleep in a pile of powdered paint, and woken up with the bad hair day of a lifetime. Eventually, locals were able to catch and wash the cat, but even today she still has green highlights on her ears and chest.
Two pets with unique colorings live with the Schimmoeller family! Carlos is a twelve-year-old lab mix, and he boasts a beautiful brindle coat that is very uncommon for his breed. He was brought home in 2012 when an in-law’s dog had puppies. Though there were many dogs in the litter, the Schimmolellers knew that Carlos was the pup for them. Carlos lives with Dolly, a six-year-old golden retriever who is white instead of gold, and Fluffy, a five-year-old Maine coon mix. Dolly was adopted on New Year’s Eve as a Christmas gift. Fluffy belonged to a kennel where Dolly and Carlos are boarded when the kennel began looking to rehome her.
“We told the owner we would think about adopting her while on vacation. When we picked up Carlos and Dolly that day, we decided to welcome her into our home,” recalls mother, Danielle.
Since their adoptions, all of the pets have fit right into the family. Carlos, despite weighing well over eighty pounds, loves nothing more than to curl up on the laps of his family for some snuggle time. He also is a food enthusiast, and will eat anything he comes across - regardless of if it is actually edible or not. His hungry nature has led to his family having to keep their trash bins locked up and supervised, as Carlos is notorious for rummaging through them whenever he is given the chance!
Though Carlos is well in his elderly years, Dolly helps keep him young as a puppy. The two love to spend time with one another, running and swimming outside to their heart’s content. Dolly is especially fond of a good game of fetch, and will eagerly bring her tennis ball to any unsuspecting visitors in hopes that they’ll toss it to her! If no one is available to play with her, however, Dolly has her own tennis ball launcher to keep her entertained.
Fluffy, on the other hand, does not partake in her siblings’ energetic activities. She much prefers finding a good window to sit on and birdwatching for hours on end. When she does find herself in the mood to play, Fluffy adores chasing after laser pointers and strings. Though Fluffy loves everyone in her family dearly, she has selected husband Kevin as her “person,” and will lay with him contentedly after a long day of catching lasers and keeping the birds at bay.
Carlos, Dolly, and Fluffy live on Shores Lane with parents Danielle and Kevin, who work in healthcare, along with daughter Morgan and son Jack, who are 16 and 17 respectively. Jack is a junior at Shawnee High School, and is an avid member of the baseball team and enjoys golfing and fishing in his free time. Morgan is a sophomore at Shawnee and an incredible swimmer, as she is a part of both the Shawnee and YMCA swim teams. The Schim-
moellers love the massive pond in their backyard that they share with their neighbors. The dogs adore jumping and swimming in the water, to the point where it’s nearly impossible to keep them out! No matter if they are brown, white, or bright blue, Dolly, Fluffy, and Carlos will always be loved by their family, who give them all the pats, treats, and tennis balls a pet could ever dream of!

I’m so thankful that I was able to write for Shawnee Life Magazine this year! It’s been a great experience while working alongside amazing people! I’ve grown both as a writer and as a person. By being given this opportunity I have been able to put one of my talents to use for a positive cause.
I’m happy to announce that I will be attending the University of Dayton while co-majoring in entrepreneurship and marketing. I’ve always known I’ve wanted to own my own business, so studying these subjects will teach me what I need to do to be a successful business owner. As for future career aspirations, I would love the opportunity to run my very own tennis and pickleball club.
I chose the University of Dayton because they have lots of amazing opportunities in the business school, like the study abroad program, creating your own products, endless internships, and competitions. Dayton has always been my top choice, however I did explore other options. None compared to University of Dayton’s education system for my program.
Of course, I wouldn’t have had such a great year without my friends and family! I want to thank my mom, dad and brother for always supporting and encouraging me to be the best person I can possibly be. I also want to thank my best friends Caitlyn and Claire for staying by my side through my entire high school experience.
To wrap up my senior year, a few of my favorite memories are: volunteering for the Lima Area Tennis Association (LATA) program, winning prom queen, traveling around the world & qualifying a third time for state tennis. As for anyone going into their senior year, my advice is be outgoing. I’m glad I participated in so many activities and experienced so many fun memories. I’m very thankful that I was given these opportunities and I look forward to what is to come!

Libby Simmons was one of the winners of the 2024 Shawnee Optimists’ annual essay contest, so she was given an award and invited to read her essay at the reception at Old Barn Out Back in May.
Optimism is like a diamond, once the light hits just right, the glow and glitters touch everything in the room. Being an optimist is having the ability to change your mindset to shape a positive perspective towards any situation in life that has the capability to influence our thoughts, feelings, actions and well-being. In a world filled with pessimists, an optimist stands out like a diamond in the rough, shining to show everyone that there is light when there only seems to be darkness. By being a shining optimist you live by the choice of looking at the brighter side, having a positive attitude and staying resilient.
Optimistic people challenge themselves with their drive and determination. These individuals approach their challenges by not backing down when they see a setback. Instead of giving up, it is simply just an opportunity to try again. From the view of an optimist, a chance to try again is a blessing and an opportunity to grow and learn for future situations. This very outlook is what makes an optimist so powerful, an optimist is willing and open to personal development. As people we always have room for improvement and by having an optimistic mentality we feel more encouraged to learn from our mistakes, embrace challenges ahead and to not shy away from adversity.
The power of optimism radiates positivity which attracts people because it becomes contagious. An optimistic attitude is what people desire, it can uplift an individual personally but it can also uplift the people they surround themselves with. With the ripple of positivity and always seeing the bright side, the optimism will ripple out to others. With new found encouragement a network is created. This network will spread support and work for the construction of improvement. For example, one good optimistic teacher can touch the hearts of many students just by believing in them and positively supporting them. By one person starting an optimistic ripple, an environment for learning and self improvement is born.
After implementing optimism into your life, people will start to view you differently. You will notice a change, but so will the people around you. When people surround themselves with an optimistic leader, they are motivated as a team and
are inspired to be like them. By adding optimism into your life, you could become that leader. Positivity can become your drive for success and improvement. By approaching your challenges as an optimistic leader with a positive attitude and mindset you become more powerful with your adaptability, creativity and resiliency. Where others see obstacles, you will see opportunities to take advantage of and act upon. Through your encouragement to others you can motivate them to adapt to an environment of positive collaboration and innovation.
The ability to see the best in others allows you to set the foundation for healthy relationships. Optimism helps people connect and communicate effectively by having a positive outlook. By being honest with yourself it provokes honest conversations with others. By communicating effectively with the people you surround yourself with you will come to find it’s easy to find solutions and solve conflicts. When we become an optimistic person we can shimmer and spread the light of seeing the bright side and always expecting good things to happen. It’s not all about happiness though, optimism improves how you interact with others and how you can strengthen relationships you already have. For example, if you have a bad relationship with someone you disagree with, we often see flaws. But with a positive optimistic outlook we can have more empathy and be more understanding. With a change of heart, a new relationship can be built. One that can be strengthened through positivity and fulfilled with personal growth.
In conclusion, optimism is in many parts of our lives every day. Even when we are feeling down, optimism reminds us that we should be bursting with positivity and outshining the pessimists. By improving ourselves to be optimistic we are able to solve problems we would have once given up on, turn towards people we have disagreements with, and conquer goals we once thought was too far away to reach. Now we know when the sparkling diamond of optimism hits us, we can channel that light, glitter and glitz to anyone we come into contact with the rest of the day, or even for a lifetime.

In today’s dynamic economic landscape, high earners face unique financial challenges. Despite substantial incomes, the complexity of their financial situations requires careful planning and strategic management to safeguard their wealth and prepare for retirement. What are they and how can they be addressed effectively?
Your tax burden is possibly one of your largest expenses making tax planning a critical component of financial management. Understanding and utilizing tax-saving strategies can substantially impact what you get to keep over your working years. Simple tactics such as maximizing contributions to retirement accounts, health savings accounts (HSAs), and exploring effective investment options can help mitigate or defer tax liabilities. Additionally, engaging with a tax professional to stay updated on changing tax laws and deductions relevant to you is essential.
If you are not pro-actively engaging a tax planner you may be wasting dollars on taxes you don’t need to pay. There are strategies for business owners and W2 employees alike. But, your tax preparer isn’t going to bring them to you.
Despite earning high incomes, many professionals delay retirement planning due to demanding careers and the assumption that their income will always suffice. However, planning for retirement should start early to take advantage of every strategy to enhance compounding returns and to ensure a comfortable retirement lifestyle. Planning for future retirement expenses and setting realistic retirement goals are critical.
Carrying significant debt into retirement, whether from student loans (yours or your children’s), mortgages, or business investments can create cash flow problems. Effective debt management involves prioritizing high-interest debt repayment while maintaining a balance between debt reduction and savings. Refinancing options, consolidating loans, and leveraging tax-deductible interest can also be beneficial. Regularly reviewing and adjusting debt repayment strategies considering changing financial circumstances, ensures better financial health.
The current interest rate environment doesn’t bode well for rebalancing. It may be better for you to buckle down and satisfy as much debt as possible before you reach your golden years. When the time is right a reverse mortgage may be the right tactic to employ.
Building and maintaining diversified investment portfolios is essential for long-term financial security. Whether in a deferred account or non-qualified accounts your money should be working for you. Diversification includes a mix of asset classes to spread risk and capitalize on growth opportunities. Not every asset class may be increasing all the time. Own them all.
Working with a financial coach to tailor an investment strategy that aligns with your risk tolerance, time horizon, and reason for investing can lead to more informed and confident investment decisions. Regular portfolio rebalancing is also critical.
Estate planning is often overlooked but is vital for protecting assets and ensuring wealth transfer according to one’s wishes. Establishing a comprehensive estate plan, including wills, trusts, and powers of attorney, can prevent legal complications and provide clarity for beneficiaries. When appropriate you can consider strategies to minimize estate taxes and protect assets from potential liabilities. When the time is right the strategies will also accelerate the private transfer of your assets to your beneficiaries.
Coordination between your estate planning attorney, tax advisor, and financial coach can help create a tailored plan that addresses your specific needs and desires.
The demanding nature of work often leads to burnout and stress, impacting our overall well-being and financial decision-making. Strike a balance between work and personal life for your long-term success and satisfaction. Prioritize self-care, delegate tasks when possible, and seek support from your financial coach to help manage your financial affairs effectively. Creating a holistic approach to life and career can lead to better financial decisions and improved quality of life.
Adequate insurance coverage is essential for safeguarding against unexpected events that could jeopardize financial stability. Have you had all your coverage evaluated against your insurance needs, including: life, disability, liability, professional malpractice, auto, homeowners, and umbrella coverage? Ensuring sufficient coverage to protect income, assets, and future earning potential is critical. Periodically reviewing and updating insurance policies to reflect changes in circumstances and financial goals ensures continued protection.
Each of us faces a unique set of financial challenges that require proactive and informed strategies. By focusing on tax optimization, retirement planning, debt management, diversified investments, estate planning, comprehensive insurance coverage, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance we can secure our financial future and achieve our financial goals. Partnering with knowledgeable advisors can provide the necessary expertise and support to navigate these complexities and make sound financial decisions.
