Fire destroys Polo lawnmower business

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Sparks from a grinder started a fire that destroyed a longtime Polo business Monday morning.

Polo Fire Chief Tony Karrow said Dambman Lawn Mower Hospital, 605 S. Congress Ave., was completely engulfed by flames when firefighters arrived on the scene shortly before 11 a.m.

“Fire was rolling out the front, and big black smoke was high in the air,” he said. “They could see the smoke from Byron and Dixon. We were able to keep the fire from getting to the garage and house to the north and the house to the south.”

Former owner Gene Dambman safely escaped from the burning building where he was working when the fire began around 10:48 a.m.

The business is owned by Dambman’s son Jared.

Karrow said the fire was accidental, and a representative from the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s office was on the scene late Monday afternoon to help determine the cause.

Firefighters from several area departments worked until around 4 p.m. to extinguish the fire.

“Several hot spots popped up,” Karrow said.

Two buildings, several lawn tractors, and other equipment and supplies were

destroyed in the blaze.

Dambmans have sold and serviced lawn mowers at the location since 1977.

Polo firefighters were assisted by the Mt. Morris, Oregon, Byron, Stillman Valley, Lanark, Milledgeville, Dixon City, Sterling, and Franklin Grove Fire Departments, as well as Advance and ATS ambulances.

A second fire was reported in mid-afternoon while firefighters were still at the Dambman fire.

Karrow said the resident of a house approximately two blocks south on Congress Avenue reported flames coming from a faulty outlet.

He said firefighters made sure the fire was out and little damage was done.

Work begins this week on jail infrastructure

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Construction will begin this week on infrastructure for Ogle County’s new jail.

County engineer Jeremy Ciesiel told the Ogle County Board Tuesday evening that work would begin Thursday or Friday on South Sixth Street in Oregon to relocate water and sanitary sewer mains.

He said Martin & Company has already

brought equipment and materials for the project to the site.

The new water main will run along Jefferson Street and the sewer line will flow to the south, away from the new building which will be located in the 100 block of South Sixth Street across from the judicial center.

Ciesiel said the work is expected to take approximately two weeks.

The county board approved the design

plan Sept. 25 for the $25.5 million jail which will be called the Ogle County Judicial Center Annex.

The new building will face Washington Street (Ill. 64).

POLO POLICE Polo Police Chief Kurt Cavanaugh released the following information on Oct. 15.

Oct. 9 Kaleb D. Sheffield, 20, Polo, was arrested at 11:42 a.m. on an outstanding Ogle County warrant.

He was transported to the Ogle County jail.

Oct. 11 Melanie K. Pommerening, 58, Polo, was issued a city citation for maintaining a kennel (more than three dogs).

Oct. 12 Morgan K. Fassler, 27, Dixon, was

cited at 5:12 p.m. for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. She was released on an I-bond.

Marlene I. Mackey, 67, Polo, was issued a city citation at 6:28 p.m. for dog running at large.

Christopher Forney, 23, Forreston, was arrested at 7:56 p.m. for driving while license suspended.

He was transported to the Ogle County jail.

Oct. 13 Diana L. Staggs, 50, Mt. Morris, was cited at 6:24 p.m.for speeding 45 mph in a 30 mph speed zone and no valid driver’s license. She was released on an I-bond.

Ciesiel said Tuesday that upgrades of several surrounding streets will be done next year at the same time as the jail construction.

The street work will include repaving and new curbs, gutters, and sidewalks for one block of South Fifth Street, two blocks of Jefferson, and one block of South Sixth Street.

approved two changes to the vehicle impound ordinance.

Tow fees were hiked from $350 to $500, and the time a towed vehicle is stored before being declared abandoned was decreased from 35 days to 10 days.

Sheriff Brian VanVickle said the fee increase brings the county into line with what municipalities are already charging.

He said the decrease in storage time is fairer to the tow companies that house the vehicles.

Board member Pat Saunders, of Polo, cast the only no vote for the ordinance changes, saying she is opposed to county fee increases.

All necessary forms are included in the candidate’s election packet available at the library.

The filing period is Dec. 10 through Dec. 17. Packets returned after Dec. 17 will not be considered for candidacy.

Packets may be obtained and filed during library hours: Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Students enjoy reboot of Marcolite

They had a club called The Marcolite, who would create articles to send to the local papers.

This year’s Marcolite staff includes 15 people and is supervised and edited by Miss Scott.

Eleven seniors and four juniors come up with all the creative information in the paper.

The energetic bunch loves to share their ideas together and collaborate to bring together a great newspaper.

“It’s a great way to find information on what you missed during the last week and to elaborate on current events,” says senior Tabitha Falk.

A fellow senior says, “It’s actu-

ally much more successful than I thought it would be in the beginning. I’m quite impressed!”

Scholastic surprise in 4th grade We all received those Scholastic Book Club fliers growing up: the ones with loads of colors and options.

Recently, an inspiring Centennial teacher made use of the pamphlets we used to hold so close.

Mrs. Yingling, a 4th grade teacher at our local elementary school, reached out to her Facebook friends on August 12th.

“How cool would it be for each student to receive one free book every month at no cost to his/her family?” she wrote.

Her post explained that Scholastic offers $1 books monthly, and how she would love to

find sponsors for her classroom family.

At $1/book, it adds up to $9 per child for an entire school year!

Comments flooded in, wishing to support Mrs. Yingling’s 15 students in their reading adventures.

Then, on October 14th, the beloved teacher resurfaced with an update!

She excitedly posted, “My kids received their first book today and loved it! Thank you everyone!”

After not having a school newspaper since the early 2000s, the Marcolite returns.

Every Wednesday, students huddle around the small coffee table in the lobby to get their hands on a copy of the latest issue.

Eager to see if their picture is in the paper, attempt the new puzzles, and read the recent articles, the students scour each new edition.

“I think it is a great idea and it gives us a new elective class. It’s also fun to look through and see if my picture is in it,” stated Marco Senior Ally Rhodes.

Though the new Marcolite is a reboot, Polo Community High School has never had an actual school paper.

Purchase of house sparks new research project

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator Polo Historical Museum Jodi called me about the new home she had just purchased in Polo on 420 E. Dixon St. She realized it had to have quite a history story due to the age of the house. The information given to her said it had been built in the 1870s by Dr. J. B. Snyder.

I had never researched the house so I knew nothing about it.

I started through the pictures of the older homes and there was a picture that stated, “Built in 1870’s by Dr. Jerome Snyder.”

The back of the picture gave a date of 1996 so it was not an early photograph.

I went to the early newspapers for information of Dr. Snyder.

He was listed for the first time as a

doctor in Polo on Sept. 25, 1875 in the Ogle County Press.

A month later he moved to Polo Oct. 16, 1875 and lived in the residence just one house south of the Presbyterian Church.

We are lucky that the newspapers printed where the doctors lived. I suppose so people could find them in a hurry.

In 1878 Dr. Snyder moved to the Wagner House which was one block east of the Episcopal Church.

This church stood where the Church of the Brethren now stands.

So Dr. Snyder was still not over on Dixon Street.

It was not until 1883 that I found him on the east side of town in the Hitt House.

This would be a house that was Who was built by a Mr. Hitt.

Then I remembered coming across an article about a J. W. Hitt starting the foundation for a dwelling on Dixon Street between the residences of V. B. Webster and C. F. Cushman.

This was July 24, 1875 in the Ogle County Press. I went back to the 1872 plat book. Webster and Cushman both own properties but at that point there is no Mr. Hitt owning any property between them.

Our next plat book was 1893, and this one showed Dr. Snyder owning a part of the property previously owned But

by V. B. Webster. the house had already been built.

In the 70s there was an article in the paper about the fact that rental property was very difficult to find in Polo.

It stressed the need for Polo businessmen to build nice rental homes for the community.

J. W. Hitt was a Mt. Morris businessman. Why was he building a house in Polo?

It was time to find out about the Hitt family and how connected they were to Polo.

Samuel Hitt came to this area in 1836 and selected as his home the township of Mt. Morris.

He had a large fortune and invested in real estate. He built the best constructed mill in Pine Creek which was later destroyed by fire.

He was married to Barbara Hershey who was connected to the Hershey Chocolate Company.

They had 12 children but only six lived to adulthood.

In 1858 they built an Italianate style home on Ill. 64 that has been placed on the National Register.

The house was not quite finished when Samuel died.

They walked around the city of Oregon in an effort to raise funds to feed the hungry near and far. Also participating in the walk were Bill Hare and Maggie Henning.

On Saturday morning, Sheryl Hopkins invited our women’s breakfast group to her home for the morning meal.

Judy Riffle, Vicki Hay, Jean Cunningham, Sandra Ford, Martha Johannsen, and Charlotte Hoppe attended the breakfast gathering and time of fellowship.

This past Tuesday morning, Clint and I left very early in the morning to head to Chicago to pick up my son, Matt, and his wife, Ema, at the airport.

The couple left Hawaii on Monday night to come home for a visit and their wedding celebration.

On Tuesday evening, Matt, Ema, Clint and I headed to Dixon for dinner at one of Matt’s favorite restaurants.

On Wednesday morning, our foursome headed to Rockford to shop for wedding flowers and decorations.

After a quick lunch, we headed home to Polo.

Ema has always loved cows and Deb and Phil Ohlwine let us come out to see their cows and visit.

Our group had a front row seat as Phil and Deb worked on the farm.

Ema really enjoyed watching the animals.

On Wednesday evening, the boys, Ema, and I were guests at my brother’s home.

Ben, his wife, Jo, and their sons, Hayden and Garrett along with our group had a great dinner and a few rounds of Uno before heading home.

This past Thursday, Matt, Ema, and I went to Belvidere to meet Ema’s mom, Rita Main, who traveled from Puerto Rico to attend their wedding.

We had lunch and a visit with Rita before sending Ema and Rita back to Chicago to finish a few wedding plans.

On Friday, our family headed to Chicago where we met with my daughter, Stephanie, and her boyfriend, Joao Vieira, who traveled from Minnesota for her brother’s wedding.

Stephanie, Joao, Clint, and I spent time catching up over pizza.

In the afternoon, Ben, Jo, Hayden,

and Garrett made it to our hotel.

My wonderful church family planned to carpool to the downtown hotel.

They had room in the carpool for my aunt Bobbi Deen and my good friend, Amy Sikyta. I was so happy to have so many family and friends in attendance.

We celebrated the marriage of Matt and Ema long into the night with dinner and dancing.

The happy couple is already off to a great start as they have been married for one year. I am so glad we had this time together.

These are the times when the term “church family” has the most meaning to me.

It was so comforting to see the many happy faces from Pine Creek there to support Matt and Ema. The bond we share is much closer than friends. We are inseparable because of our bond to Jesus.

I hope to see you next week in our church. Come and experience the love and care of being a child of God. Our family welcomes you and yours each week for a time of worship.

From warm sunshine to small snowflakes, we are grateful for His care.

CLASS REUNION

OCHS Class of 1958 holds reunion Plans for the Oregon Community High School Class of 1958 to share their 60th class reunion with the Autumn on Parade weekend looked like a sure winner.

Starting on Friday night (Oct. 5) several members of the ’58 team joined classmate and musical host Ron Colson at the Mt. Morris Moose for First Fridays Open Stage and a celebration of the funding victory for Black Hawk Statue.

A major problem was brewing for Saturday, Oct. 6 when Leonard

Bruns of the classes’ catering provider, Powerhouse Bar-B-Q, was knocked out of commission with a serious (is there any other kind?) stroke.

When the class gathered at Oregon’s Cork & Tap at noon on Saturday a barbecue feast awaited them Joyce Bruns and son James, who flew in from Oklahoma, kept up their schedule of visits to the hospital and still prepared the anticipated feast for the class reunion.

The reunion was a roaring success and the Class of ’58 expresses

their appreciation to the Powerhouse Bar-B-Q Team for service above and beyond the call of duty.

Best of all Leonard is making a speedy recovery and should be home by the time this story “hits the street.”

In observing that after 60 years, the five-year interval between reunions might be a bit much, it was decided to pick a month each year to join the Depot’s last-Saturday-morning-of-the-month historic presentation followed by a class reunion.

Field trip to study local geology to begin at Castle Rock Oct. 28 Join Northwest Illinois Audubon on a visit to Castle Rock State Park on Sunday, Oct. 28 to view and learn about bedrock geology of northwest Illinois.

The field trip starts at 1 p.m. at the Castle Rock scenic overlook, about a mile south Oregon on Illinois 2.

After Castle Rock, the group will travel to a quarry near Elkhorn Creek

The Mt. Morris Moose Family Center will once again host the Songwriters Open Mic on Friday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m.

The event is held the third Friday of each month and others are scheduled for Nov. 16, and a Christmas Finale on Dec. 21 will round out the 2018 schedule.

The Songwriters Open Mic, produced by Jerry Tice of the Mountain Grass Band and co-hosted by performer Ruth Ann Lillstrom, will showcase original musical or lyrical compositions performed by the creating artist with no covers and no accompanist, All material must be family friendly.

A new feature, Tips on Tunes, offering assistance on chord progression, arrangements, and presentation, will be a feature of this month’s show.

Each performer gets two songs and no more than 10 minutes.

Police still investigating arson, double homicide Candlelight vigil for mom and her son is Oct. 19 in Oregon

Candlelight Vigil is Friday, Oct. 19 The Rosko Family and Friends are hosting a candlelight vigil in memorial of the passing of Maggie and Amos Meyer. October 19th, 2018 marks the 2nd anniversary of the loss of these two precious souls.

Candles and holders will be provided as we gather as a community to remember and reflect upon the lives of Maggie and Amos.

The Vigil will be held outdoors, so please dress for the weather. We request that those joining us wear green, a favorite color of Maggie and Amos. A small memorial table will be set up if participants would like to write a note or display a picture.

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Law enforcement officials are still working to solve the arson and double homicide two years ago that took the lives of a young Byron mother and her 3-year-old son.

Margaret “Maggie” Meyer, 31, was found dead on a couch on the first floor of her burning home at 2020 N. Silverthorn Drive on Oct. 19, 2016, and her son Amos was pronounced dead a short time later at Rockford Memorial Hospital.

“It’s an active investigation,” Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said Oct. 11. “We continue to work on it.”

State’s Attorney Eric Morrow said the sheriff ’s department, Byron Police Department, and Illinois State Police are working closely with his office to solve the case.

“We’re confident we’re going to come to a resolution for the family and friends,” he said.

VanVickle, Morrow, and Ogle County Detective Lt. Brian Ketter declined to discuss details of the

Maggie and Amos Meyer case because their investigation is ongoing.

The fire was reported around 6:40 a.m. by Meyer’s ex-husband, Duane C. Meyer, now 36, of Stillman Valley, who told officials he was there to pick up his son.

The couple had been divorced about a month earlier.

When firefighters arrived, smoke alarms were sounding, the house was filled with heavy smoke, and Duane Meyer and a Byron police officer were on the lawn performing CPR on Amos, who had been in

an upstairs bedroom.

Amos and his father were taken to Rockford Memorial Hospital, where the little boy was pronounced dead.

An autopsy at the Winnebago County Coroner’s office showed he died of smoke inhalation.

VanVickle, Ketter, and Morrow declined to reveal the cause of Maggie’s death, although they said pathologists have determined that.

They also would not say how the fire started.

Palisades Art Show and Sale this weekend The Palisades Art League’s 57th Annual Art Show and Sale will be held this weekend at West Carroll Primary School on Wacker Road in Savanna.

A critique by the judges for the artists will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.

PAL President Sandra Dunlap, of Mt, Carroll, will present a Best of Show ribbon and a $50 award to four winners during the awards ceremony on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

Votes of PAL members will decide who will receive the Peer Award medal.

A People’s Choice Award will be chosen again this year by the guests of the show voting for their favorite piece of art and photography.

This year the progressive painting “Flying High” is an 18”x24”oil landscape on canvas.

Raffle tickets are $1 each or seven for $5. You do not need to be present to win.

Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire was an arson while he was at the scene.

Maggie, the daughter of Donald and Luann Rosko, of Mt. Morris, had been a teacher at the Chana Educational Center for several years, and Amos had recently become a student at the preschool at the Byron Forest Preserve.

In what could be the final 11-on-11 varsity high school football game played at Polo High School, the Marcos enjoyed a victory that was reminiscent of the program’s recent successes.

Polo scored six first-half touchdowns, setting up a running clock throughout the second half of a 42-18 victory over Ashton-Franklin Center on the Marcos’ Senior Night, making them playoff eligible in their final year before they switch to 8-man in 2019.

“Everything we worked for got us to Senior Night,” said senior quarterback Braiden Soltow, who rushed for 79 yards and two touchdowns. “It flew by. We got the ‘W’ tonight, and that’s all that matters.”

The victory was quite welcome for Polo, which had suffered backto-back shutout losses to River Ridge and Stockton heading into the contest, and is now on the playoff bubble.

“We hadn’t scored in 2 weeks,” coach Jeff Bumsted said. “We were 4-1 and doing well, and then the bottom fell out. It went the way we wanted it to tonight.”

Polo, which advanced to the state quarterfinals in 2016, probably have enough playoff points for a berth this year, but it’s not a sure thing.

“It’ll be up in the air,” Bumstead said. “If we [would have won] the River Ridge game, this is Win 6.”

Friday’s win was highlighted by junior running back Tucker Mumford’s 115 yards and three touchdowns, but on Senior Night, it was fittingly a senior who stole the show. Linebacker Dravon Wells intercepted a pass from AFC’s Caleb McBride and returned it 35 yards for a score early in the second quarter to give his team a 28-0 lead.

“We had a blitz call; I had dropped back in my zone.

I saw the ball coming for me and I decided to go for it,” Wells said. “It felt like going back to older years in middle school when I used to run the ball.”

Like Polo, AFC has been the victim of a decrease in numbers on its team this year, and injuries have added to the Raiders’ problems with depth. They were able, however, to find success in the second half, scoring three times, including on a 38-yard punt return by sophomore Peyton Lanning.

Marcus Cater added a 25-yard score on the game’s final play for the Raiders (0-8), finishing with a team-high 27 rushing yards.

Cardinals score early, often to beat West Carroll Running clock starts in third quarter in 48-6 rout

In hopes of avoiding a running clock, the Thunder converted a pair of fourth downs and drove 65 yards into the red zone.

However, quarterback Derek Tracy, who was effective mixing the run and pass on that drive, was intercepted by Cailean Davids at the 5-yard line.

Davids, a sprinter on the track team, took it all the way to the goal line and Forreston led 38-0 with 1:30 left in the half.

“That’s on me,” West Carroll coach Matt Leitzen said. “The play call got sent in wrong. It wasn’t (Tracy’s) fault.”

Why is there a lack of high school officials?

If it’s not the money, is it the verbal abuse?

Lately, much as been of the shortage of game officials for high-school sports. While in Forreston recently, I asked long-time official Don Cook his take on it.

“It’s been coming for a few years and it’s really getting bad,” Cook said. “There are first-year officials working varsity games. When I started, you worked five years before you did varsity. And, it’s almost impossible to get subs.”

Still doing games at more than 70 years of age, Cook has assigned officials for various leagues.

“In football, I think we’ll have to go to some Saturday games,” he said. “I tell athletic directors to have homecoming on Saturday to split things up.”

This past year, Cook and company has put on clinics in Sterling, Forreston and Rockford with the hopes of attracting new officials.

With an average age of 55-60 years for a referee, something has to give.

In nearly every sport other than track and cross country, finding officials has become difficult.

“I can’t say it is about (lack of) pay,” Cook said. “The Big Northern pays $110 for two games.”

Why have we reached this point and what does it mean for interscholastic sports?

The number one factor is abuse officials have taken, as society has become less and less respectful of authority figures.

In a disgusting manner, parents and coaches are acting like little brats not getting their way. They take out their frustration on the poor officials, which perpetuates the

problem. Some of these newer guys refuse to take it and quit.

Can you blame them?

“Basketball and softball are tough,” said Cook speaking from experience. “It used to be just dads that complained. Now, mothers and everybody have played it and think they know more than the officials.”

Another major factor is a general shortage of workers. All over the country, jobs go begging for lack of interested workers.

So, why should officiating be any different? Along those same lines, employers have told me that the new work force is much ‘softer’ than previous generations.

That ‘softness’ doesn’t translate very well for someone under the microscope as a sports official.

High school sports don’t mean as much to this generation as it did to previous ones. Some don’t even know who’s in their conference or care how other teams in the area or state are doing.

Decades ago, kids had a much keener interest in high school sports

and that certainly was a consideration in wanting to maintain contact by becoming officials.

Here’s something else to consider: When guys like Don Cook started 50 years ago, it was primarily boys football, baseball, basketball, cross country, track and wrestling.

Since then, other sports like soccer have emerged. Then, if you add in girls sports, the workload is about double of what it used to.

What is the answer?

Nobody seems to know. We have seen the effect already with games being rescheduled, short-handed crews and a weaker product.

Maybe the only hope is to offer support, rather than criticizing. But, for that to happen, there must be a change of heart inside of a person.

The IHSA has had the Add A Tude sports mascot for over 20 years and that promotion has done little for sportsmanship.

Yes, it must start with our own spiritual condition, not with a mascot or being reminded to behave.

OBITUARY ELEANORE L. FINFROCK Eleanore Lucille Finfrock, 94, of Mt. Morris died on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018 at Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home with her family by her side.

Eleanore was born on Aug. 6, 1924 in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of J. Henry Edward and Estella (Rutt) Frerichs.

She graduated from Davenport High School in the Class of 1943.

Eleanore married John W. Finfrock on October 12, 1942 in LaGrange, Missouri, He preceded her in death on Oct. 18, 2002.

Eleanore worked as a data processor for Kable News Company for 25 years, retiring in 1986.

She was a devoted mother, wife, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Davis Junction man charged with sexual assault A Davis Junction man has been charged with predatory criminal sexual assault following an investigation by the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department.

Robert A. Hardt, 39, of Davis Junction, was arrested on Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. for the Class X felony following an investigation by Ogle County detectives that began in September.

Hardt is alleged to have sexual contact with a minor who was 13 or younger in June and September, court documents indicate.

He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and appeared before Ogle County Associate Circuit Judge John Redington on Oct. 10 via closed circuit television.

He was represented by Ogle County

Public Defender Dennis Riley.

Redington found that probable cause existed and set Hardt’s bond at $250,000 (10%) adding the condition that he have no contact with the victim and anyone else under the age of 18.

Hardt’s preliminary hearing has been set for Oct. 31.

a utility pole. Deputies learned that Berg had been traveling northbound on Illinois 2 when she lost control and entered the east ditch where her vehicle struck the utility pole and came to rest.

Berg refused medical treatment from the Byron Ambulance at the scene.

As a result of the damage to the pole, power lines fell into the roadway which caused the northbound lane of Illinois 2 between Luther Drive in Byron and Ashelford Drive north of Byron to be closed to traffic until 8:15 p.m. when Com Ed was able to replace the pole and lines.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Byron Police Department, the Byron Fire Department, the Byron Ambulance, and IDOT, who assisted with traffic control.

Oct. 12 At 4:58 a.m., deputies responded to the Area of Stone Hill Road and Brick Road, northeast of Oregon for an abandoned vehicle in the roadway. Badreddine Boutira, 33, of Miami, Florida, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for an over registered weight violation. Boutira posted $100 bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail. Boutira is scheduled to return to court on Oct. 29.

Illinois State Police District 1 Commander Captain Matthew Hodgdon announced District 1 enforcement figures and activity for September.

Troopers issued 388 citations, 446 written warnings, and made 29 criminal arrests during the month.

Speeding accounted for 199 citations, 20 citations were issued for occupant restraint violations, and 16 citations were issued for distracted driving violations.

Troopers investigated 17 traffic crashes, assisted 70 motorists, and conducted 152 commercial vehicle inspections, 16 of which were placed out-of-service for safety reasons. Nine arrests were made for driving under the influence.

District 1, which encompasses Carroll, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside counties, had one traffic crash fatality in September.

The following activities were also reported.

Plane lands in cornfield Oct. 11 Law enforcement officials received a report at 1:30 p.m. that an airplane landed in a cornfield in the southwest corner of Creston and Mulford Roads.

The airplane was a 1950 North American T-28A. The pilot and passenger took off from Tulsa, Oklahoma and were en route to Wonder Lake when they reportedly lost power and made an emergency landing in the cornfield.

No one was injured, and the plane was not damaged.

Derek Weegens, 41, Polo, pleaded guilty to theft. Judge John B. Roe issued a judgment of conviction and a sentence of conditional discharge with 30 days

jail if he is unsuccessful in completing the conditional discharge.

Roe also ordered him to pay total fines and costs of $4,602 and restitution of $3,750.

Naomi Harris, 33, Rochelle, pleaded guilty to attempting to obstruct justice.

She was sentenced to 24 months conditional discharge and must serve 180 days jail if she is unsuccessful in completing the conditional discharge. She was also ordered to pay total fines and costs of $997.

Oct. 12 Jordan A. Shank, 20, of Oregon, was arrested at 1:26 a.m. for possession of a controlled substance. Shank was also issued citations for driving while license suspended, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, illegal transportation of alcohol as a driver, and operations a motor vehicle when license suspended.

Shank was transported to the Ogle County Jail, these violations occurred in the 400 block of Monroe Street.

Jeremy J. Hillary, 42, of Rockford, was issued a citation at 9:22 p.m. for operating a vehicle in violation of the tinted front side windows law. This violation occurred in the 600 block of Gale Street.

At 12:15 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the 300

block of Jefferson Street involving a 2013 Hyundai driven by Sara J. Waeffler, 29, of Dixon, and a 2012 Jeep driven by Shauna M. Fiser, 35, of Mt. Morris. Waeffler was issued citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Lukas A.H. Hurst, 19, of Mt. Morris, was issued a citation at 11:25 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle.
