Down along the railroad tracks at the north edge of Polo, an Oregon man is working to turn a former dumpsite into a fertile garden.

Greg Cotovsky, 42, is building a permaculture on two lots he purchased earlier this year at 504 and 506 Sunset Drive.

Once a spot where the city discarded concrete and bricks, these days city workers bring wood chips and leaves to the site to help Cotovsky rebuild topsoil.

Neighbors have also gladly chipped in with their leaves and grass clippings.

“It has been such a blessing to coordinate with the city to repurpose organic materials into rich soil,” Cotovsky said.

Permaculture, he explained, is based on sustainable practices, utilizing the patterns and features observed in natural ecosystems.

It involves working with, rather than against nature.

“Whatever we can do to be sustainable in our communities can help out environment,” he said.

As he steadily grows topsoil, Cotovsky plans to also grow plants both for beauty and food.

He hopes to eventually rebuild the soil enough to support fruit trees. Just last week he planted several aronia berry bushes on a lower area of the property, fed by a natural spring.

All plants are chosen with an eye to what they can do for both the soil and the rest of the ecosystem.

“My favorite ornamental is red bee balm,” Cotovsky said. “Not only is it beautiful, it also attracts hummingbirds by the dozens.”

The heavy clay soil in the area needs to be amended with organic material, he said, and to that end he has planted Russian comfrey and others to “chop an drop.”

They are cut and left to decay on the spot, thereby enriching the soil.

“Russian comfrey is a powerhouse for someone who’s trying to build the soil,” he said.

Cotovsky is already seeing results with an increase in fungi and earthworms living in his enriched ground.

Near the back of the property is large bin, a raised bed called a hugelkultur.

It is built in layers, starting with logs on the bottom and then grass clippings.

There Cotovsky plans to grow vining plants such as cucumbers, hops, and grapes.

Part of permaculture, he said is using berms and swales to control the flow of water.

With a small wetland in the lower end of the property and two waterways running through it, Cotovsky sees great promise.

Rademacher chosen as Polo Citizen of the Year Kim and Jon Miller are top volunteers

BY CODY CUTTER ccutter@saukvalley.com The number of days, weeks and months are getting smaller as Chris Rademacher heads toward retirement as superintendent of the Polo School District.

The tributes, however, are starting to become larger.

The Polo Chamber of Commerce on Monday awarded Rademacher with its 2019 Citizen of the Year award during its monthly meeting at the Polo Room.

“This is fantastic. I couldn’t be more honored,” he said.

Rademacher, who has been in education for 31 years, and superintendent at Polo for 17, will retire on June 20, 2020. Several business owners and chamber board members walked the halls of Polo schools during his time as superintendent, he said.

“It’s great seeing a lot of students now running all of this.”

The honor is given to citizens who show civic leadership through volunteerism and service to the community outside of one’s employment duties.

Winners don’t know of their award until the day of the presentation.

However, when Polo Chamber President Tammy Merdian began the presentation with “Born and raised in Grant Park, Illinois ...” it clicked.

Despite having only spent half of his life in Polo, Rademacher’s service to the community is greater than most in town think, often in ways that most don’t see, Merdian said.

Rademacher, who has a background in industrial technology, began his teaching career teaching high school shop in Watseka. He moved into administration at Thomson, Carthage and Alexis schools before moving to Polo in 2003.

He continues to keep busy with wood work when not in the superintendent’s office. He creates items to help with local fundraisers, and more than $26,000 has been raised through such efforts. One of his first projects was working on the school bleachers with last year’s Citizen of the Year recipient, Ron Bardell.

BY JON MANDRELL Polo Police Chief Two weeks ago, Polo Police Department and Polo Community Unit School District #222 launched a collaborative initiative as part of our emergency planning efforts to grow our access to resources in the event of a crisis.

The creation of Go Bags in the schools was an opportunity that both the schools and police department felt could greatly enhance our response to such an incident and provide another tool for safety. So, you might ask, what’s a Go Bag exactly?

A Go Bag is a backpack of essential items that a teacher or staff

These on-the-go bags would contain key items for survival should the class need to quickly move and evacuate or even be on lockdown within a classroom.

the Polo Police Department is rallying the community for the items that will be placed into each bag. In total, 75 Go Bags will be placed throughout the district’s three buildings.

Singers are wanted for Christmas cantata in Polo Singers in Polo and the surrounding area are invited to join a Community Choir for rehearsals for the 2019 Christmas Cantata, “Song of Joy; Celebrate God’s Gift of Salvation This Christmas!”

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator, Polo Historical Society I seem to have entered into the world of technology a tad more than I am comfortable with at the moment. But I also wanted to see all those cute pictures of the new great grandchildren that have been arriving the last several months.

We also have more coming in the next couple of months.

So Bruce and Robin came with this new pink iPad and attempted to fill me in with how it worked. I know how to turn it on and from there I am still sometimes clueless as to what is the next step.

I fumble around with it and then suddenly up pops a cute picture of Anna Fay or Arlo and we are pleased to see the latest shot.

Then this week I was faced at KSB with high tech stuff.  I wanted to say to the person introducing me to the new heart monitor, “Do you realize

By Karen Merlak As we start the fall season, the golden colors of harvest are starting to take over the surrounding fields.

Our summer has come to an end.

This is a time to look back and thank our Creator for the enjoyment of the season as we look forward to the next. God is good. This morning in church, we were greeted by Deb Ohlwine. Larry Riffle provided our special music by playing his harmonica for the hymn, “Wonderful Grace of Jesus.� Pastor Charlotte led the children’s message for our friends, Katelyn, Laura, and Harper. This afternoon, despite the

Plus, there was a book to read and so the next morning after Kenneth came home from KSB I started in on the book. It was soon put away because Krista was coming and I quickly decided to let her handle this new fangled thing.

Upon her arrival she tackled it with great gusto. It was not all that simple and she even had to stay an extra day.

The heart monitor operates with a smart phone that is very tricky. So we now have a full page of what are supposed to be simple directions.

The next 17 days alone with this device should be very interesting.

Wednesday night on the 9th of October will be our Polo Historical Society meeting at the museum

gloomy weather, Deb Ohlwine and one of our young friends, Katelyn, joined with a large crowd for the Ogle County Crop Walk that took place in Polo. The funds raised from the walk are used to help those in need of food. This past Saturday evening, a group from our church gathered together for a night out at Timberlake Playhouse to see Heartache Tonight, an Eagles tribute band. We had a lovely visit before heading over to the theater. Joining in the fun were Don and Vicki Hay, Charlotte Hoppe, Brian Toms, Deb Ohlwine, Lyle and Sheryl Hopkins, and several other friends.

The entertainment was great with several of us singing along with the band. This past Wednesday, I traveled to Silver Ridge Golf Course to bring dinner to the Polo High School Golf Team. Their season is winding down as this was their last regular home meet. We wish all of our local athletes a wonderful and successful season. Charlotte usually joins us when

Our program will focus on some World War II information and artifacts that came into the museum a few weeks ago.

Beth Lang Rodermel came down for Beloit, Wisconsin with the history of her husband, Bill in World War II. How would you feel if we were in war and your 17-year-old son came home to tell you he had enlisted in the service while he was still in high school?

Many Polo parents went through that very experience during World

War II. Bill had written up a very detailed history of his service in the air force and it should prove interesting. For example when they returned from a mission, they were all given a “shot� of scotch before they went through the debriefing session of the mission.

How many times have we read of where people were given a “shot� of scotch to calm their nerves after an upsetting experience? This must be a standard procedure obviously used in wartime.

feed the sports teams, however, she was on duty at the church where she led a new bible study around the Lord’s Prayer. Before the night of study, Charlotte attended a building committee meeting. We are blessed to have this time with Charlotte. This past week, my nephew Hayden Bittinger celebrated his nineteenth birthday away from home. Hayden is away at school for his freshman year. His birthday reminds our family that time moves just a little too fast. My grandparents were great farmers. My grandma could grow just about anything. Unfortunately, I didn’t inherit any of those genes.

The proof is in the plants that decorate my front lawn. When I moved into my home, I was gifted with several mini-rose bushes. Two, in particular, thrived and produced lots of bright pink roses. This summer, the branches were completely empty and crowded with an overgrown ivy. In mid-August, I finally cleared

away the empty branches. Little did I realize, those empty branches were the support for two other plants.

Now, the remains of the weakened stems lie in a circle in the yard. We are like the now-fallen plant.

We need the support of others to keep going in this life. God intended for us to lean on each other. In our relationships, we take turns being the support. Some days I am the strong one. More often than not, I am leaning on my beautiful friends and family. Even when we don’t feel like we have anyone to lean on, we can lean on our friend, Jesus. Nothing can take away from His strength. He is tireless and sturdy. No matter the situation, we always have a friend and support in Him. I hope to see you next week in church as we gather once again for a time of praise in our little church in the country. Come and join our family as we sing and pray together.

Earl Hagemeyer receives 4-H Foundation Honor Esmond man is recognized for his volunteer efforts An Ogle County volunteer was honored for their service as a 4-H volunteer.

Earl Hagemeyer of Esmond was one of 80 volunteers recognized by the Illinois 4-H Foundation as a 4-H Hall of Fame recipient during a ceremony Tuesday, Aug. 13 at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield.

“These volunteers fully embody what 4-H strives to instill in youth,”

said Angie Barnard, Illinois 4-H Foundation executive director.

“They are caring, dedicated, generous leaders, and the Illinois 4-H Foundation is extremely proud to be able to provide this honor to thank them for their service to this wonderful organization.”

The Illinois 4-H Foundation established the statewide Hall of Fame in 2004 to honor and celebrate extraordinary 4-H alumni, volunteers, and former 4-H staff. Each inductee receives a commemorative Hall of Fame medallion.

“As a result of these volunteers’ years of service and leadership to Illinois 4-H,” Barnard said, “the program they love will continue to cre-

ate wonderful opportunities for the young people whose lives it touches.”

“The Foundation provides avenues to support the work of Illinois 4-H by accepting financial gifts specifically directed to the program you wish to support,” Barnard said.

“Estate planning services are available to those wishing to continue their 4-H legacy.”

Ogle County Master Gardeners host Bark Project The Ogle county Master Gardeners Therapeutic Horticulture committee joined residents of Oregon Living and Rehabilitation along with the Village of Progress to educate and craft on Sept. 19.

Master Gardeners Nettie Weston of Rochelle, Kathy Michel of Byron, Leah Patapack of Oregon, and Mary Korth of Creston along with helper Mary Sweeney of Oregon helped to make and design fall door hangers.

Along with the door hangers, they presented the educational component on bark! The Master Gardeners truly enjoyed giving back to the community and sharing their wealth of knowledge.

Jacques Saint-Cyr will perform at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mt. Morris. cities across North America.

In 1997, Jacques and Maria E Castello created “It takes Three to Tango”, a stage production with dance and live music based on the history of Argentine Tango. This production has been presented in many cities in Canada and the United States.

Jacques Saint-Cyr has performed in France, Canada and the United States. Jacques joined the Rockford community in 2003. He is on the faculty at the Music Academy in Rockford, Rockford University and Rock Valley College.

Trinity Lutheran Church will offer a musical journey into Argentine Tango music on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 3 p.m.

The concert will showcase a variety of styles that have perpetuated Tango as one of the most popular music in the world.

This concert will feature Jacques Saint-Cyr, flute and Erik Olson, piano.

Jacques Saint-Cyr obtained a Bachelor of Arts in music education from University of Quebec in Montreal and a Master of Arts in flute performance from the University of Montreal under the direction of Lise Daoust.

A two-time recipient of a grant from the French Government, Jacques Saint-Cyr studied flute in Paris with Raymond Guiot and baroque flute with Jean-Christoph Frish.

Returning from his studies in Paris in 1993, he began dancing Tango. He has studied with Argentine master teachers. From 1996 to the current year, Jacques has worked as a guest teacher in many

Performing Arts Center. He played as a freelance musician with many ensembles and choirs in Rockford: Trinity Lutheran Church, Unitarian Universalist Church Choir, Kantorei, Second Congregational United Church of Christ and First Free Church. Jacques is first flute and soloist for the Rockford Wind Ensemble since 2012.

Erik Olson is a producer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist from the Chicagoland area.

A fourth generation pianist, he began studying with Linda Poquette while garnering a relationship with Lewis University.

With performances from Indiana to Colorado, he continued his tutelage under the direction of instructors including Marylin Taggart and Dr. James Breckinridge of Southwestern State University in Weatherford, OK. Following a run of soldout shows with Monica Raymund, including Space (Evanston), Andy’s (Chicago), and Joe’s Pub (Manhattan, New York), he began his foray into the magical world of Tango.

Most recently, his production work and original composition was featured on FOX 32 in Chicago. Erik resides in Morris with his wife, four children, and two dogs.

There is no charge for the concert, but a free will offering will be taken.

A reception will follow the program.

First Fridays performance is Oct. 4 in Mt. Morris

US Air Force Band concert at NIU Oct. 7 Event is free The United States Air Force Band of Mid-America Concert Band will perform on Monday, Oct. 7, at 8 p.m., in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall at Northern Illinois University’s Music Building.

This free concert will showcase this diverse, 45-piece ensemble whose repertoire ranges from symphonic band masterworks, to traditional marches, to modern compositions, to pops and jazz.

Stirring works from contemporary composers as well as the

familiar sounds of John Philip Sousa or Major Glenn Miller are all part of the concert.

The band features talented vocal soloists, performing a wide variety of popular, classical, and patriotic selections.

This October they will be presenting music in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing as well as vocal selections from The Wizard of Oz, The Wiz, and Wicked in celebration of the 80th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz.

BRIEFS VOP Foundation scholarship The Village of Progress Foundation is offering a $500, one-year scholarship to be awarded at their annual banquet scheduled on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

The financial status of the applicant is not a consideration.

To be eligible, the student must be a resident of Ogle County, be either a high school senior who is disabled or is planning on attending college and majoring in an area related to the disabled, or a full-time undergraduate college student who is disabled or is majoring in an area related to the disabled.

Applications must be received by Tuesday, Oct. 1, be completed on the foundation application form, and

include at least three written references.

Those wishing an application are encouraged to call the Village of Progress at 815-732-2126.

First Fridays will provide a musical opening to the Autumn on Parade weekend on Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. at its usual location, the Mt. Morris Moose Family Center, 101 Moose Dr. in Mt. Morris.

The First Fridays format features each musician (or band) taking 15 minutes at center stage and continuing until each group has been featured.

Instruments are all acoustic and professional sound system engineering is provided by Mike Bratt.

Talented musicians from across Northern Illinois, and often neighboring states, appear on a regular basis.

The music is varied and includes country, bluegrass, blues, gospel, folk, soft rock, and eclectic mixes of all of the above.

“Participation is encouraged so bring your instrument and join the show, or relax and just enjoy the music. Bring a friend and enjoy some great music,” said Ron Colson, organizer.

Polo firefighters offer plenty to eat at their annual hog roast on Oct. 12 The Polo Firefighters Association will host its annual hog roast and open house on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Polo Fire Station.

A quarter beef and a freezer will be raffled at the event.

Raffle tickets can be purchased at the ambulance station in Polo,

or from any Polo firefighter for $5 each.

Pink Heals of the Sauk Valley will also attend the event.

Polo firefighters will do a burn simulation.

Donations will be accepted at the door.

The John Deere Historic Site in Grand Detour will celebrate the harvest season with its annual Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Guests can enjoy a variety of fall activities and can decorate pumpkins, bob for apples, play a variety of old-fashioned kids games and tour the grounds and exhibits while at the site.

This year’s event will also feature covered wagon rides throughout the day and a petting zoo with farm animals.

The historic site offers free admission for this family outing.

Be sure to bring cameras to capture seasonal photos of the kids and family.

Staff at the site will also be dressed in pioneer-era costumes, adding to the historic ambiance experienced while strolling through more than six acres of John Deere’s original Illinois homestead.

“This time of year provides an exceptional opportunity to celebrate

the harvest season and enjoy the beauty surrounding the John Deere Historic Site,” said Kristen Veto, manager of the John Deere Historic Site. “In addition to all of our Fall Fest activities, our blacksmith will also conduct demonstrations throughout the day and our guides will offer tours throughout the site.

It’s a perfect opportunity to learn more about where the legend of John Deere began.”

Fall Festival attendees should also register for the John Deere Attraction’s Passport Program while at the historic site.

The new program, launched earlier this year, is designed to help guests commemorate their trips to visit John Deere by collecting seals and stamps in their personal passport booklet.

Visitors can tour the Chana School on Saturday, also located at Park East. This unique two-room school, built in 1883, is celebrating its 136th birthday this year. Lunch will also be available on site.

Spooktacular Horse Show to raise funds for horse barn Build-A-Barn will hold a Spooktacular Horse Expo on Saturday, Oct. 12 and Sunday, Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ogle County Fairgrounds, 1440 N. Limekiln Rd., Oregon.

Spooktacular is a Build-A-Barn event to raise money to build an exhibition horse barn at the fairgrounds. The public is invited to bring their horses or come to watch.

A fun show with miniature horses and ponies will start on Saturday at 10 a.m.

It appears Mother Nature will be right on cue this weekend when Oregon hosts the 49th annual Autumn on Parade festival.

With temperatures forecast in the 60s, the ever-popular festival will be held Oct. 5-6 offering visitors their usual favorites — unique craft booths, an Olde English Faire in the backdrop of a castle, a 100+ unit parade, and, of course, plenty of treats to eat.

“We’ve been working all year since the 2018 festival planning this year’s event,” said AOP President Marseyne Snow. “We’ve been very, very busy finalizing details for the festival. We have our great traditional line-up of entertaining activities geared to please everyone.”

The heart of Autumn on Parade is its Farmer’s Market and Craft Fair, located on the Ogle County Courthouse Square and surrounding streets in downtown Oregon.

Handmade, homemade and homegrown items as well as many other kinds of unique items are available for purchase from the 180-plus vendors.

The booth layout will be a little different this year due to the construction of the new Ogle County Jail with some booths moved to the parking lot at Fifth and Washington.

“We are currently filled to our capacity with booths so there should be something for everyone,” said Snow.

On Saturday, antique tractors and classic cars will be on display at Oregon Park East, just across the Rock River on River Road.

Owners of Olivers, Farmalls, and Deeres are more than willing to share the history of their tractors.

Forreston Cardinals power past Missiles 54-8

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com Last year, Forreston escaped with an overtime playoff win at Milledgeville on its way to a state title.

A return trip to Floyd Daub Field resulted in a far different result.

This one was over at halftime with Forreston up 54-8. A few minutes of the second half were played before officials called the game because of inclement weather.

“We took a step back after losing a strong senior class. Forreston didn’t,” Milledgeville coach Jason Wroble said.

The Missiles defense did offer early resistance to Forreston’s vaunted ground attack, forcing the Cardinals into three straight thirddown situations on the first possession.

“Milledgeville does some good things on defense and are disciplined,” Forreston coach Kyle Zick said. “Eventually, we got things to open up.”

With the Missiles selling out for the run, Forreston quarterback Bailey Cullor lofted a 25-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Jordan Neuschwander for a 6-0 lead.

Forreston rarely throws, but when they do Cullor has exhibited a deft touch.

Defensive back Lukas Lingel quickly set up Forreston for another score with a 40-yard interception return to the 5-yard line. Two plays later Dom Christensen crossed the goal line for a 14-0 advantage.

With Forreston attempting different types of kickoffs, Milledgeville had decent field position at the 40-yard line on its next possession.

However, negative yardage forced the second of four 3-and-outs in the first half and Forreston soon rang up its third TD on a 44-yard Braden Politsch run.

“Forreston is number one in the state for a reason,” said Wroble.

“They’re methodical and physical.”

The Missiles put together a 76-yard scoring drive to close to within 22-8.

It was Nick Smith leading the way with four straight completions.

A Marcus McKenna 11-yard catch moved the chains for the first time and Connor Eubanks followed up with a 12-yard grab. Both are part of the Polo wrestling co-op, along with kids from Forreston.

down before hitting Ryan Kendall with a 38-yard touchdown. The pair added a PAT and it was down to a 22-8 lead.

“That was a nice drive,” Wroble said. “To get a touchdown against a team as good as Forreston is a big plus.”

Cullor did one better with his second TD pass, this time to Cayden Shelton for 37 yards. Shelton was one of several running backs that got carries for a program that traditionally rotates six to eight backs.

“It’s a luxury we’ve had at Forreston,” said Zick. “If you’re a running back here, you’ve got a good shot to get on the field.”

A Derek DeVries sack of Smith resulted in a punt. Earlier in the game, strongman DeVries was humorously flagged for grabbing

one of his running backs by the jersey and dragging him one-handed three extra yards.

Neuschwander made it 38-8 on a short run and then Christensen, hero of Forreston’s playoff semifinal win over Lena-Winslow, went 83 yards on the first play from scrimmage after a long Missile punt.

Already ahead 46-8 with 2 minutes left in the half, Forreston caught a break when it recovered an errant punt snap at the 10-yard line.

Neuschwander tacked on his third touchdown for the 54-8 lead, with the half coming to end and heavy rain on its way.

“As a young team, we’re taking a lumps,” Wroble said. “Forreston controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.”

Milledgeville fell to 0-5 and 0-3 in the NUIC South, while Forreston (5-0, 3-0) remained unbeaten with an October 11 date looming against Le-Win, ranked No. 2 in 1A.

The Polo Marcos boosted their record to 4-0 with a 52-8 romp over Edwardsville’s Metro-East Lutheran on Sept. 27.

The Marcos scored four times in the first quarter in this 8-Man League contest in Polo.

Tucker Mumford put Polo on the scoreboard first when he scored on a 35-yard run. Alex Davies scored next on a 10-yard run and Jace Coffey converted for two more points.

Parker Wolber was the next Marco in the end zone when he scored on a 31-yard run and Coffey added the two-point conversion.

Coffey then scored on a 54-yard run, up the right side to make it 28-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Coffey ran it in from 17 yards in the second quarter and Mumford connected with Joey Bardell on a pass to make the score 34-0.

The Mumford to Bardell connection scored again in the quarter on a 46-yard-pass and Davies converted the two points to end the scoring in the quarter.

Mumford scored on a 55-yard run on the third quarter and Davies got the two points to end the Marcos scoring.

Coffey led Polo in rushing yards with 119 on nine carries and two touchdowns. Mumford had 108 yards on three carries and also scored two touchdowns. Davies rushed for 80 yards on nine carries with a touchdown and Wolber had 40 yards on three carries with one touchdown.

Mumford connected on three of five passes for a total of 64 yards and one touchdown.

No, not that there was a storm coming, but like so many lopsided games in the NUIC, this would simply be a glorified practice for Forreston.

I will go as far as to say that the Cardinals may get a better workout in practice scrimmages than they have lately against the likes of Galena, AFC, Amboy and Milledgeville.

It was another romp for Polo in 8-man and perhaps the biggest challenge this season is adjusting to a new way of living.

After decades of playing 11-man football against teams from the local area, it has become a new frontier for Polo. They are real pioneers in giving credibility to a brand of football that is still finding its way.

When Polo first made the announcement they were going to 8-man, the fledging league got a huge boost.

When 8-man eventually gets on its feet and I truly believe it will, it will be Polo that made the difference and that is something for the school to be proud of.

As expected, Milford and Polo are the cream of the crop in 8-man and appear headed to a state championship final. Both are the only unbeaten teams left and like Polo, Milford is winning by wide margins.

Here was an interesting score: Morrison 18 Newman 6.

With an enrollment of 270, Morrison would likely be in the 1A playoffs and give the top dogs in the NUIC something else to worry about. A couple other intriguing 1A schools are the ever-present Aurora

Christian and upstart Chicago Hope Academy.

Both play odd schedules and are not shoo-ins to get five wins. In successive weeks, Hope traveled to California and Missouri for games.

Aurora plays Elmhurst Catholic and Kankakee McNamara, two schools that reached the 4A state final.

With the regular season becoming such a preliminary for teams like

Forreston, it’s never too early to look ahead to the post season. This year promises to be quite interesting in the northern quadrant of 1A. The first post season of any sport kicks off next week with golf regionals. In reviewing scores this season, high school golf in small to midrange schools is regressing.

A couple of factors at play – not as many kids interesting in golf anymore and the closing of courses.

efore we get into sports, I wish to honor a muchesteemed colleague. This past Friday was Vinde Wells’ last day on the job as the News Editor for the Forreston, Mt. Morris, Oregon and Polo weekly newspapers.

Working tirelessly behind the scenes for 30+ years, Vinde leaves us as someone who never gave less than 100 percent.

With all the challenges facing the newspaper business, Vinde kept plugging away to put out a quality product.

The Leaf River resident did it humbly, professionally and with attitude of servitude to you the reader. I am grateful to having worked with Vinde Wells.

Before heading to the Miledgeville-Forreston football game, I caught the first part of Oregon and Stillman Valley at 5 p.m.

It was a much-improved effort by the Hawks in giving SV all they could handle in the first half. Of any team on the schedule, Oregon somehow plays Stillman the toughest, at least for the first half.

It has been said that certain teams match up better with others and that is probably the case for Oregon when it faces SV. Especially impressive was an opening drive that gave the Hawks a 7-0 lead and the game could have easily been tied at halftime.

As was the case the last couple years, SV’s superior depth wore Oregon down in the second half.

Nonetheless, an inspired effort for a team that finally has some winnable games coming up. Next week’s opponent, Rock Falls, is on a downward spiral and it will be interesting to see how this one stacks up.

As I drove over to Milledgeville with an impending storm on the way, I had to question what’s the point?

Almost all microplastics end up in our oceans, either from plastic waste that ends up there or from microplastics that flow into the oceans from rivers and streams.

These tiny particles are even getting into our bodies.

Most of us can easily discard the hard plastic into recycling bins, but what about film plastic?

The largest market for plastic today is in packaging which is used once and thrown away.

The trash from these packaging materials accounts for almost half of all plastic waste generated globally.

Film plastic can be described as any plastic that can be flattened and wad-

ded up into a ball.

What is one solution? The Mt. Morris and Oregon Indivisible Group is working with civic and non-profit organizations in both communities to recycle film plastic and earn Trex benches.

Trex (www.Trex.com) is a company that uses plastic to create products such as decking, porch rails, fences and lawn furniture.

Communities are invited to participate in the program by donating 500 pounds of film plastic within six months in exchange for each bench.

World production of plastics has increased exponentially since 1950 to about 450 million tons in 2015 and it continues to grow.

It is predicted that by the middle of the century there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.

What is the lifespan of all that plastic?

The Byron Forest Preserve District and the Northern Illinois Players Troupe will present a “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” themed murder mystery dinner at the Jarrett Prairie Center Museum on Saturday, Oct.19 starting at 6 p.m.

The mystery dinner will feature the characters from Washington Irving’s story that will include school teacher Ichabod Crane, beau-

tiful and rich Katrina Van Tassel, her suitor Brom Bones and others from this classic Halloween tale.

The program will feature a catered buffet dinner and a cash bar. Guests will be seated at tables of eight people.

OREGON POLICE Oregon Police Chief Darin DeHaan reports the following police activity.

Sept. 23 Isabella Tranchina, 16, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 7:54 a.m. for use of a cell phone while driving. This violation occurred at the intersection of 10th and Jefferson Streets.

Sept. 24 Darrell J. Logan, 47, of Mt. Morris, was issued a citation at 5:02 a.m. for disobeying a traffic control device. This violation occurred at the intersection of 4th and Washington Streets.

Graeme A.F. Lints, 63, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 2:54 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred at the intersection of W. Washington Street and Oregon Trail Road.

Robert L. Swint, 41, of Oregon, was arrested at 8:18 p.m. for violating orders of protection. Swint was transported

to the Ogle County Jail. This violation occurred in the 100 block of N. 5th Street.

Sept. 25 Shelly M. Jones, 48, of Whitewater, Wisconsin, was arrested at 8:56 p;.m. for driving while license revoked. A passenger in Jones’ vehicle, William L. Jones, 53, also of Whitewater, was issued a civil citation for possession of cannabis less than 10 grams. Shelly Jones was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

These violations occurred in the 1500 block of N. IL Route 2.

Sept. 26 At 12:09 a.m., police took one 17-yearold male juvenile into limited custody for violating the curfew ordinance. The juvenile was released into his parent’s care with a referral to the Ogle County State’s Attorney’s Office to review for juvenile delinquency.

This violation occurred in the 100 block of S. 3rd Street.

Sept. 27 At 4:30 p.m., police responded to a domestic battery call the 300 block of S. 6th Street resulting in the arrest of Devin S. Bailey, 36, of Mt. Morris, for aggravated domestic battery, resisting a peace officer, and driving while license revoked. Bailey was also issued a civil citation for possession of cannabis less than 10 grams. Bailey was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Sept. 28 Jacob T. Hagemann, 20, of Mt. Morris, was issued citations at 5:34 p.m. for speeding, 46 mph in a 30 mph zone, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

These violations occurred in the 100 block of N. Daysville Road.

Joshua Williams, 37, of Mt. Morris, was issued a citation at 11:20 p.m. for operating a vehicle with no valid registration. This violation occurred in the 100 block of S. 4th Street.

Sept. 29 Hauer C. Williams,18, of Polo, was

issued a citation at 2:14 p.m. for unlawful window tint. This violation occurred in the 600 block of W. Washington Street.

The 16-year-old female driver was taken into custody and charged with aggravated fleeing to elude, driving while suspended, and speeding.

She was transported to a Juvenile Detention Center where she will be held pending a court appearance.
