Rockwood earns statewide recognition American Legion honors officer for saving a life

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Polo Police Officer Tim Rockwood’s selfless act of bravery last fall earned him statewide recognition from the American Legion.

Police Chief Jon Mandrell told the city council Monday that Rockwood, 40, is the first runner-up for the Police Officer of the Year in the state. More than 300 policemen were nominated for the honor.

Polo American Legion Post spokesman Melanie Konecny said Rockwood has been named Police Officer of the Year for the post and district.

Rockwood was recognized by the city council last November for saving a man’s life.

The man was planning to commit suicide by stepping in front of a train Nov. 11 at the Burlington Northern Santa Fe crossing on Freeport Road.

After hearing a 911 call about his imminent plan, Rockwood immediately drove to the crossing and arrived to see a train only 30 to 40 yards east of the crossing and the man about 15 feet on the other side of the tracks, hurrying toward them.

With deputies enroute, Rockwood advised them of the situation and ran across the tracks in front of the train to

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Those attending the 166th Ogle County Fair July 31- Aug. 4 can bring less cash and more plastic.

For the first time this year, tickets at both the gate and grandstand can be purchased with a credit or debit card.

Fair board president Harlan Holm said the service was added for the convenience of fair-goers.

“Hopefully it will leave a little more cash for them to buy food and other items at the fair,” he said.

In an effort to make the fair affordable for families, the fair board is again including unlimited carnival rides with the $8 general admission fee at the gate.

Admission tickets can be purchased in advance at a cost of $6 per person,

a $2 discount from the gate price, at Casey’s General Store in Oregon, Polo, Stillman Valley, and Byron, and Mobil in Mt. Morris, and a few other locations.

Signs are posted designating where advance tickets are available.

Discounted tickets for the grandstand shows are also available in advance at the same locations, at a cost of $8 per person, also $2 less than the $10 regular price.

Children age 3 and younger get into the fair free but each will need a $4 wristband to ride at the carnival.

Wristbands are available at the gate.

Advance tickets can also be purchased online by going to the fair website at www.oglecountyfair.com. Tickets purchased online will carry an additional convenience fee.

A&A Carnival will again provide the rides as it has for the last seven years.

“They’re a good fit for our fair,” Holm said.

From the queen contest to livestock shows, the fair offers five days of family entertainment that includes tractor pulls, a rodeo, demolition derby, and three free ground shows geared especially for kids.

4-H club members from across the county will have their projects on display. The project shows cover a wide array of topics from traditional livestock, foods, and clothing to electricity, woodworking, and computer science.

The Ogle County Fairgrounds is on Lime Kiln Road, just north of Ill. 64 a mile west of Oregon.

About a dozen members of Indivisible: Oregon/Mt. Morris joined hundreds of others July 12 as part of a nationwide protest over the treatment of migrants.

The group held signs and marched along Illinois 64 in Mt. Morris in the early evening to do their part for Lights for Liberty: A Vigil to End Human Concentration Camps, an event geared to particularly bring attention to conditions at detention facilities at the U.S.-Mexico border and to advocate for changes to this nation’s immigration policy.

Similar events were planned around the U.S., as well as other nations.

“Anyone who acknowledges the Creator recognizes hospitality as an imperative,” said marcher Steven Opalka. “Failure to provide hospitality is a transgression.”

The sign he was carrying read, “More plates, not locked gates.”

Another participant Glen Majewski said he teaches immigrant children.

“It breaks my heart that these children would be taken away from their

families and locked in cages. It’s evil and it’s wrong,” he said.

“We’re all outraged about what’s going on at detention centers,” said Mary Francis, a member of Indivisible.

Julie Mastny, another participant, said she hopes legislators will put politics aside and take action.

“We want our representatives to come together and figure this out,” she said.

The marchers drew mixed reactions from passing motorists. Some honked and gave them the thumbs up.

Others were not so supportive and at least one yelled profanities from his vehicle.

According to the Liberty Vigil website, vigils were planned in hundreds of cities. Big cities and small towns participated, and at least one event was planned in every state in the U.S. as well as five continents.

“We may be the smallest, but we’re not the only one,” said marcher Denise Cheek, a retired elementary teacher.

Locally, a group in DeKalb also participated in the protest.

Ogle County official to make unique career change

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com A veteran Ogle County official is making a drastic career change in just over a month.

Planning & Zoning Administrator Mike Reibel, 51, of Byron, will leave his post on Aug. 30 after 25 years to become a Lutheran minister.

Reibel said the idea enter the ministry isn’t new — it’s something he has been considering for 20 years.

“I felt the call to the ministry both internally and externally,” he said. “Many people have encouraged me. The Holy Spirit is leading me to pursue this call.”

Reibel will attend Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, to obtain a Masters in Divinity degree with the goal of being an ordained minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America.

While earning his four-year degree, he will serve as the part-time vicar at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lanark.

The course is offered online, which is one of the reasons he and his wife Bridget decided the time was right.

He has served for several years as a lay minister at All Saints Lutheran Church, Byron.

“It’s a little scary and intimidating,” Reibel admitted with a grin. “Improvise, adapt, and

Reibel started working in the zoning office on Jan. 1, 1992 as assistant zoning administrator under Ben Reints.

He took over as administrator in 1994 after Reints’ death.

After studying geography, biology, and natural resources in college, Reibel became interested in his current career when he attended a zoning meeting while he was in college.

“I thought it would be nice to made a difference to a community through planning and zoning,” he said. “It has challenges — you never know what’s coming next. There’s always something new coming, and that’s what keeps it interesting,” Working close to home was also important to him.

“I like making a positive impact for the future in the county I grew up in,” he said.

He said he has enjoyed working with other county officials as well as the residents.

“I’ve got to know so many people throughout the county. Building those relationships has been meaningful,” he said.

The county board accepted Reibel’s resignation at its May 21 meeting and are seeking a replacement for him.

“I feel like I’ve been blessed to live and work in Ogle County,” Reibel said. “I hope to leave the county in good hands.”

July 10 Jason A. Oshaughnessy, 27, Polo, was arrested at 7:55 p.m. on an Outstanding Whiteside County warrant.

He was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

munity Church Service at 9:30 a.m. at Memorial Park.

The Lion’s Club is sponsoring a blood drive from 8 to 11 a.m.

The final event for the weekend is the parade. The theme is Small Town, Big Pride.

The parade steps off at 1 p.m. and will travel from the high school to the grade school.

Polo Church of the Brethren plans outdoor service on July 21 The Polo Church of the Brethren will hold a special outdoor service on Sunday, July 21 at Westside Park in Polo, and the public is invited to attend.

The park is located at 700 W. North St., and the worship service will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the shelter.

A potluck meal will be held afterward with drink and ice cream provided.

St. James Church to hold ice cream social on July 28

The annual ice cream social at St. James Lutheran Church will be held on Sunday, July 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. on the lawn of the church, which is located at the intersection of West Grove and Columbine Roads four miles southeast of Forreston.

In case of rain, the social will be held in the fellowship hall.

Barbecues, hot dogs, pie, cake, beverages, and all varieties of ice cream desserts will be on the menu.

A band concert will be presented at 7 p.m. on the church lawn.

Proceeds from the event will be used for the yearly adoption fee for the church’s adopted child in India, plus other local charitable projects.

The St. James congregation invites the community to this annual gathering.

Forreston Sauerkraut Days promises a weekend of family fun Aug. 2-4.

“The weekend festivities are a combined effort of the Hometown Days Committee and the American Legion Families,” said committee member Jane Koeller. “The combined effort guarantees a fun weekend for all.”

The weekend kicks off on Friday.

Aug. 2 with a beer garden opening at 6 p.m. and DJ Tyler providing the music until 11 p.m.

This year the beer garden will be located on Walnut Avenue.

A dunk tank will be operating all weekend with lots of favorite local individuals.

The dunk tank will be run by four local organizations so take a chance at getting someone wet.

The second annual Kraut Kids 1 Mile Fun Run starts at 6:30 p.m. and the 5K Fun Run/Walk is at 7:30. Both races will start and end at Memorial Park.

Registration forms for the races can be picked up at Green’s Motors or Koeller Forreston Hardware.

Bingo is back this year and the fun begins at 6 p.m.

Capping off Friday night is a Movie in the Park.

This year “Legos 2” will be shown on a huge inflatable screen on the east side of the grade school.

Weekend rain brought some relief from heat Research into church records is underway

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator Polo Historical Society A much needed rain arrived and helped the intense heat. It was also a good drink of water for crops, flowers, and the lawns.

I had found myself carrying sprinkling cans of water and it was the first time this summer that had happened.

It soon tires one out and I realize quickly what my increased years feel like.

Linda and I also this week met at the church to go through church records.

Our church secretary, Lori, came out with a very large record keeping book and I started through it. The

By Karen Merlak The summer heat has dried up all of the heavy rains from the spring.

The grass is showing signs of the drier weather.

We continue to put our trust in our loving Father. He will be with each of us for all of our days. For this and more, we are truly thankful.

This morning in church, it was my turn to greet our church family.

We had several full pews with family from near and far.

Our special music was several selections from Mary Ley, who played guitar and her wood flute.

She shared “Jesus Loves Me” along with other beautiful songs.

Pastor Charlotte Hoppe led the children’s message for our youngest group of worshippers. Katelyn,

penmanship was beautiful and I enjoyed looking through it.

We were wondering when women really started to had a voice in the workings of the church.

It was in 1968 when Mrs. Herbert Coffman was the first women on the Lutheran Church Council. She was listed exactly as that, Mrs. Herbert Coffman.

I wondered how long that went on until they could be listed with their given birth name.

Then I came to January 1977 and the name Carol Garky was entered into the book. No longer did women have to go by the name of their husband.

I can remember a number of years ago I had written my congressman on some subject and when the reply came, the whole thing was addressed to Kenneth, address and letter.

He, of course, had nothing to do with it. I was not happy with that situation and I believe I contacted that individual to let my wishes

known.

Now, today, women are still marching and making waves over some subject or the other. So it continues to go on and on.

It must have really been something when women worked to get the vote in our country. That was just the beginning.

This weekend was the 69th reunion of the Waterbury FamiJohn Waterbury, who headly. ed up this clan arrived here in 1836.

The group that made their way to Illinois had a job to do and that was to run the Underground Railroad.

They were called The Delaware Colony.

The family had been wealthy clothing manufacturers in the East and they gave up everything to fight a cause in the West.

They never again achieved the same level of wealth but became humanitarians. Today we look back on them and realize what they did for mankind.

This time during this reunion, we went through old pictures and some of them are coming into the museum.

I have a bag to go through to see what needs to be placed in the Waterbury file.

It is already a bulging file and needs to be sorted by families. In fact, our files need to be worked on and more room made somehow.

This week Wendell Miller had a classmate here from Arizona.

Ted Boddiger showed them the Henry School since both Wendell and his friend had been students there at sometime.

People are still interested in the old school and it is nice to still have it there.

We will soon be thinking of our picnic there Aug. 7. So keep that in mind.

It will be at Henry School, Wednesday evening. Bring your own table service and a dish to pass. Plan on that evening.

Laura, Harper, Amelia, Rowan, and Felix listened to the story before gathering their treats.

Charlotte continues with the “Summer of Love” series with a thoughtful and loving message.

Our new church building is starting to show some progress. This is a very exciting time to be a part of God’s family.

This weekend was a time of celebration for our very own Jean Cunningham.

She will be celebrating her 90th birthday this week. She was joined by her sister, Faith Brainard, from Pocatello, Idaho, who is hear for an extended stay.

On Saturday, the family gathered, first on the farm, and then at the Pinecricker Cafe in Polo.

Celebrating with Jean were her son Steve Cunningham, wife Rita from St. Louis, Missouri, grandson Tim Cunningham, wife Lisa, daughter Joanna, from Peoria, granddaughter Megan Lawless, husband, Mike, children, Katie, Jane, Anne, and Billy, from St. Louis, Missouri.

Jean’s daughter, Jane Hamilton, her husband, Tom, daughter Peggy Hamilton of Decorah, Iowa, son, Paul Hamilton, his wife, Leah, children,

Rowan and Felix of Jacksonville, and son Doug Hamilton of Decorah, Iowa joined Jean’s daughter, Mary Toms, her husband, Ken, of Forreston, and their sons, Cy Toms and Mark Toms, both of Mt. Morris for the party.

Jean’s son, Dan Cunningham of Aurora, and his son, Gordan Cunningham, his wife, Becca of Dubuque also traveled for the celebration. The entertainment for the afternoon was from the Greenridge Musical Kaper barbershop quartet.

Joining Jean in our church service, were her daughter, Jane and her husband, Tom Hamilton, their children, and Jean’s daughter, Mary Toms. We were so glad to visit with the family and to celebrate Jean.

I have been missing my children lately and called my daughter, Stephanie, to find she had a little time to chat. She recently returned from her trip to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where she visited her boyfriend, Joao.

Joao is there for an internship while he earns his graduate degree.

After our phone call, I was ready to work on my homework.

Just a minute later, my son, Clint called. He needed to talk about the

bad day he was having.

He had a flat tire on his way home, which turned out to be a bigger inconvenience that he had expected.

Just a few minutes into our conversation, I could tell he just needed to talk to his mom. I know the feeling.

More than once, I have just needed to talk to my own mother.

Even though she is gone, those moments still come. Sometimes, we just need a parent.

We have a wonderful Father we can talk to at any time. He listens to all of our cares.

He provides guidance with our tough decisions. Most importantly, He loves us no matter what mistakes we make here on earth.

This gift of love is for everyone and is available to all who seek God. No matter our age or how far we travel from home, we always have a parent to turn to when we have a bad day or when we have something to celebrate. Our God loves each of us.

My hope continues to be that we will all know and feel the love of God. Please join us for our regular worship service next Sunday. There is room in our church family for you and yours.

Join the Polo Police Department for the first “National Night Out” event will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the 100 block of East Colden Street near the police and fire departments.

The event is held nationally by public safety agencies and began in 1984 as an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, and neighborhood camaraderie.

The Polo Fire Department, Polo Ambulance, the Illinois State police, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources will also be partnering with Polo Police Department at the event.

Each agency will have equipment on display and there will be activities and games, including face painting and temporary tattoos for the kids.

Concert at forest preserve is July 21 The Byron Forest Preserve District will offer the last of its free 2019 Summer Concerts on The Deck series with Espinosa & Coffey on Sunday, July 21 starting at 7 p.m. at the Jarrett Prairie Center Museum’s Overlook Deck located at 7993 North River Road in Byron.

Butterfly festival July 27 at Elkhorn Creek preserve

The Northwest Illinois Audubon Society will host its annual Elkhorn Creek Butterfly Festival on Saturday, July 27 from 1 to 5 p.m.

This fun, informative, family-friendly afternoon will be spent exploring the Elkhorn Creek Biodiversity Preserve for the many butterflies found at this site.

The preserve is three miles southwest of Forreston on the southwest corner of West Grove and Freeport Roads.

Participants may join guided butterfly tours or look on their own.

Tours begin at 1, 2, 3 and 4 p.m.

To date, butterfly explorers have

identified 34 species of butterflies and skippers.

Information about pollinators will be shared. A shady area will be provided with chairs and a restroom, cold beverages, and snacks.

Park in the lot off West Grove Road.

No fee will be charged to participate, and registration is not necessary.

FUNDRAISER AT COUNTY FAIR

Take a chance to win 65� TV and help raise funds for horse barn The Ogle County Horse Barn Committee will sell raffle tickets for a 65-inch TV at its Build-aBarn booth on the Ogle County Fairgrounds during the fair July 31 through Aug. 4.

The drawing for the TV, donated by Exelon Generation, will be held on Oct. 13 during the committee’s Spooktacular Horse Expo, a two-day event at the fairgrounds. Another donor has issued a Matching Funds Challenge for the barn. This donor will match dollar for dollar up to $2,000, for all donations made during the 2019 Ogle County Fair. Many donors have sponsored events and classes in horse shows. The third annual Build-A-Barn

Ogle County Fair Show will be held on Sunday, Aug. 4 beginning at 9:30 a.m. with a full schedule of halter, performance, and speed classes.

Classes for draft horses and mini horses have been included this year. The Build-A-Barn committee is raising funds to build an exhibition horse barn at the fairgrounds. The barn and arena will be available for rent for various horse activities, which, in turn, will attract more people to the area, potentially bringing increased revenue for local merchants.

Race to the Crown 4K July 20 at fairgrounds west of Oregon Join Miss Ogle County, Grace Mongan, her court, and the Ogle County 4-H Ambassadors for the first Race to the Crown 4K, on Saturday, July 20.

The event kicks off at 9 a.m. at the picnic shelter of the Ogle County Fairgrounds.

Packet pick up will begin at 8:15.

Parking is right on the grounds.

The race will be a fun run style, so princess attire is encouraged.

The route will be on various surfaces throughout the fairgrounds.

Proceeds for the event will benefit the Ogle County Fair Pageant and the Ogle County 4-H program.

Post- race refreshments and awards will conclude the event.

Ecology classes offered at White Pines State Park Sign up now for these classes offered by the UofI Extension Ecology is the science that studies the interactions and relationships that exist among living organisms and their environment.

A class studying those interactions is being offered by the University of Illinois Extension at White Pines State Park in August, September, October and November.

The goal for this class is to introduce, or reintroduce some key parts to ecology and use specific skills to reach conclusions in a field setting.

Skills such as observation, describing, generalizing to create a theory, inferring, concluding, classifying and of course measuring are all part of our everyday life but we will take it back to more of a science skill focus.

The concept of ecology is based on three major ideas: 1. Ecology of nutrition is the interaction between producers and consumers.

2. The cyclic flow of matter

through the planet’s environments such as water, carbon, and nitrogen along with others are recycled over and over again.

3. Energy keeps those cycles going.

All energy comes to the planet from the sun and leaves the planet in the form of heat.

Any changes or interruptions, natural or man-made, to these patterns or relationships can alter life on the planet.

It is important to understand the relationships of our natural areas, such as a conservation area, so we can relate larger scale situations in a scientific way with sound support.

The class will be held on Mondays from 10 a.m. to noon, on Aug. 19, Sept. 16, Oct. 14, and Nov. 4. The cost is $5.

It was so, so, so fun!” Cherie Dietrich Lewison Dietrich said July 7 after all the Mt. Morris High School Class of 1969 50th reunion activities were over and everyone was headed home.

This was only one of the many excited comments made by classmates after having a such a great time.

The class of ‘69 celebrated years of memories from when they attended Mt. Morris Elementary School, Junior High and the four years at MMHS, 1965 to 1969.

Events began July 3 at the Mt. Morris Moose for the alumni dance.

The few who attended were greeted by a banner proclaiming the 50th reunion of the class of 1969.

Mark Lewis of MEL’S Graphic Designs of MM created the beautiful Mounder class banner which everyone enjoyed during the reunion activities.

July 4 started with the Firemen’s Breakfast cooked by members of Mt. Morris Fire Department at the Mt. Morris Firehouse.

Several classmates met at the station and others attended with family and friends.

As usual the firemen and many volunteers put on a tasty breakfast.

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com No one was injured in a fire late Tuesday afternoon that destroyed the home of Al Koper at 2589 W. Oregon Trail Rd. With temperatures in the high 80s, firefighters from eight area departments battled the blaze.

Mt. Morris Fire Chief Rob Hough said the home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived shortly after 4:30 p.m.

Still at the scene, Hough said that while the cause had not yet been determined the fire had likely started in the attached garage.

Koper and his daughter, and two granddaughters, who also reside in the home, were outside working in the yard when they discovered the fire and called 911.

The Kopers’ 4-H animals were not injured in the blaze.

Forreston High School football coach Kyle Zick won Channel 23’s 23 Sports Ticket’s 2018 - 2019 Coach of the Year beating out other nominees including Judy Krause, Winnebago girls’ basketball; Lacee Sattelberg, Belvidere North cheerleading; and Mike Winters, Harlem boys’ basketball. Zick won the online poll with 590 votes.

Zick surely didn’t disappoint Forreston Cardinal fans in his first season as head coach of the football program as he led the Cardinals to a 12-2 record, including a 44-6 blowout win over Camp Point Central in the Class 1A state championship.

It was Forreston’s third state title in five years, all won at the University of Illinois’ Memorial Stadium in Champaign.

Four games were also nominated for the 23 Sports Ticket’s 2018 - 2019 Game of the Year: Forreston vs. Lena-Winslow, football 1A state semifinals; Hononegah vs. Boylan, girls basketball 4A sectional championship; Dakota vs. Forreston, boys basketball 1Aregional championship; and Byron vs. Oregon, girls soccer 1A regional championship.

The Class 1A state semifinal between Forreston and Lena-Winslow took the title with 604 (58.5%) total votes.

With less than five minutes remaining in the game, the Cardinals returned a punt for a touchdown that decided the end of the game.

July 11 Thomas W. Fiala, 62, of Dixon, was arrested for violation of order of protection. He was held at the Ogle County Jail pending a court appearance.

Deputies and the Lynn-Scott-Rock ambulance responded at 7:05 a.m. to a one-vehicle accident with injuries in the 400 block of North Illinois 251.

A semi-tractor trailer combination driven by Gregory L. Maturo, 63, of Madisonville Kentucky, was northbound when the driver swerved to miss a stopped vehicle in the road at a construction area.

The semi crossed over the southbound lane and struck the embankment on the west side of the road, coming to a stop jack-knifed.

Maturo was treated at the scene by Lynn-Scott-Rock EMS and refused any further treatment.

He was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Michael R. Haas, 40, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop in the 2,000 block of North Illinois 2 for a registration violation. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

July 12 Ernest Miller, 30, of Leaf River, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He was released on a recognizance bond and is scheduled to appear in court on July 29.

Mario Pineda, 25, of Rochelle, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He was released on a recognizance bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 9.

Samara Goff, 41, of Mt. Morris, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. She was released on a recognizance bond and is scheduled to appear in court on July 29.

July 9 Danny Roos, 63, of Oregon, was arrested for fleeing and attempting to elude a police officer after deputies attempted to stop the truck he was driving in the 4,000 block of North Illinois 2 at 9:20 p.m.

Roos was also issued citations for a non-functional registration light and speeding 15-20 mph over the speed limit. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Joseph L. Grove, 69, of Leaf River, was arrested for disorderly conduct after a domestic disturbance at 9:20 p.m. at 113 N. Main St. in Leaf River.

Grove was taken into custody without incident and was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Illinois State Police and the Mt. Morris Police Department.

Ryan Hackbert, 36, of Rockford, was

arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He posted the $150 full cash bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail with no further court date.

OBITUARIES DARYL R. CHRISTIANS Daryl Ray Christians, 82, of Mt. Morris, died on Thursday, July 11, 2019 at his home.

Daryl was born on May 9, 1937 in Avon, South Dakota, the son of John E. & Jennie G. (Hamminga) Christians.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

He married Roberta J. Murdock on Oct. 14, 1972 in Mt. Morris.

MARIAN E. DAVIS Marian Elizabeth Davis, 96, of Oregon, died on Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at Pinecrest Community, Mt. Morris.

Marian was born in Mt. Carroll on Oct. 9, 1922 to Zella (McGinty) and George Keim.

Her family moved to Chicago when she was two years old.

Marian began singing in public when she was four years old and at age 10 she started private singing lessons and making appearances at various churches and other events.

She attended Steinmetz High School in Chicago for one year before the family

MARY A. DAVISON Loving mother and grandmother, Mary Alice Davison, 74, of Oregon, died on Monday, July 8, 2019 at the Serenity Hospice and Home.

She was born Dec. 11, 1944 in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of Jack and Nina (Nelson) Batten.

She married Orvis Allen “Junior” Davison Jr. on Oct. 12, 1962 in Dallas, Texas.

He preceded her in death on June 16, 1997.

Daryl was preceded in death by his parents; and great-granddaughter, Annmaray Forbush.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, July 28 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Mt. Morris Moose Lodge, Mt. Morris.

Cremation rites have been accorded with Finch Funeral Home, 405 E. Hitt St., Mt. Morris.

Marian joined the choir at Oregon United Methodist Church, formed a junior choir, and continued giving musi-

cal programs even into her later years.

She continued her love of music at Pinecrest Terrace, often leading songs during activities.

Marian was known as a gracious woman, always stylishly dressed with her hat and looking her best.

She and her husband would have celebrated their 77th anniversary on July 18, 2019.

Survivors include her loving husband, Herbert; sons, Eric R. (Pat) Davis, of Byron, Mark (Barb) Davis, of Oregon, and daughter Sheila Johnson, of Puerto

Vallarta, Mexico; grandchildren Jennifer (Richard) Boyden, Eric Ryan (Velvette) Davis, Peter (Megha Patel) Probst, Danielle Johnson; great-grandchildren Kylan Springman and Suriya Probst.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Richard Keim and Keith Keim; her sister, Joyce Strength; and granddaughter, Shelley Shelton.

The family wishes to thank all of her wonderful caregivers at Pinecrest Terrace for their professional and compassionate care.

A celebration of Marian’s life will be held at later date.

Mary worked for more than 30 years at the Lorado Taft Field Campus as a cook.

She loved to spend time in her flower gardens, feed and watch the humming birds come and go, and play with her dogs.

Mary was a great cook, especially her home baked cinnamon rolls, which she would gener-

Mary is survived by her three children, Tracy Andrew Davison, of Juda, Wisconsin, Amy Jo (Paul) Gillingham, of Oregon, and Adam Allen Davison, of Oregon; two granddaughters, Jessica Davison and Lily Gillingham.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Junior; her

half-brothers, Sonny, Buddy, and Jack; and a lifelong friend, Carolyn Saratori.

Funeral service were held on July 12 at the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 110 S. Seventh St., Oregon, with the Pastor Dave Rogula officiating.

Burial will take place at a later date at the Washington Grove Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established in Mary’s name.

NORMA R. STUFF Norma R. Stuff, 99, of Polo, died on Friday, July 12, 2019 at Polo Rehabilitation and Health Care.

Norma was born on Jan. 21, 1920, in Polo, the daughter of George and Sadie (Zumdahl) Hammer.

She married Max Stuff on March 11, 1946 in Polo. He preceded her in death in August of 1977.

Norma was a hairstylist for many years

along with a loving and dedicated farmers wife.

She enjoyed quilting, gardening, doing her own yard work, cooking, and baking cookies for many.

Norma continued to ride her bike around Polo till she was 95.

Survivors include her daughter, Kathy (Steve) Knutson, of Polo; grandchildren, Brett (Nicole), Rick, and Kenny (Jana); great-grandchildren Niklas, Emily, Max, Annalise, Gray, and Isla.

She was preceded in death by son, Lance Stuff; sisters, Belva Hammer and Blanche Bloyer; and brother, Maynard Hammer.

Visitation and funeral services were held on July 18 at the Polo Family Funeral Home, 110 E. Dixon St., Polo.

Burial was immediately following at Fairmount Cemetery, also in Polo.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in her name.
