Rockin’ River Fest throws in the towel Three years of bad weather and limited attendance are blamed

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Three years of unfavorable weather has led Oregon’s Rockin’ River Fest Leadership Team to discontinue the three-year-old festival.

“After three years of bad weather and limited attendance, we have made a difficult decision to discontinue Rockin’ River Fest as it currently exists,” said Donna Mann, leadership team member and president of the Oregon Chamber of Commerce Board. “We are actively exploring new options for hosting some mini events like the Tug Across the Rock and other part of the festival that were well-received.”

Mann made the announcement at the Oregon City Council meeting on June 25 and also on the chamber’s website last week.

The festival, held on the third Saturday in June, was plagued with a downpour and wind in 2017 the first year, excessively hot and steamy conditions last year, and heavy rain again this year.

An estimated 750 people attended this year and about a 1,000 last year. Numbers were not available for the first year.

Highlights were the Tug Across the Rock, where teams of tuggers competed from the east and west sides of the Rock River, pulling a rope stretching across it just below the dam, and the Adventure Triathlon, a rigorous run, bike ride, and kayak paddle down the river.

The majority of the activities took place on the banks of the Rock River, on north Second Street between Franklin and Washington Streets.

Polo PD to host first National Night Out Fire dept. & ambulance, state police, IDNR to partner with police The Polo Police Department will host its first National Night Out celebration on Tuesday, Aug. 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the 100 block of East Colden Street between the police and fire departments.

At its July 1 meeting, the city council approved closing the street for the community event.

Police Chief Jon Mandrell said all

residents are invited to attend the block party event.

The Polo Fire Department, Polo Ambulance, the Illinois State Police, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources will partner with Polo Police Department at the event.

Each agency will have equipment on display, and activities and games for all are planned.

Triple P Barbecue and other vendors will also be on site to provide food for purchase.

National Night Out, sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and co-sponsored locally by

the City of Polo, will involve people from more than 16,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world.

In all, over 37 million people are expected to participate.

National Night Out, also known “America’s Night Out Against Crime,” began in 1984 as an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, and neighborhood camaraderie.

For the second time in seven months Polo police officers received commendations for risking their own lives to save another person’s.

Polo Mayor Doug Knapp presented certificates of recognition to Officers Troy Randall, 44, and Brian Diaz, 26, at Monday evening’s Polo City Council meeting.

Police Chief Jon Mandrell said the two were on duty around 3 a.m. on June 15 during Town & Country Days when they received a 911 call that a man was planning to commit suicide by stepping in front of a train near the Union Road crossing just north of the city limits.

After they located the man and he fled from them, they enlisted the help of Ogle County Deputy Jon Shippert and his K-9 partner Duke.

Duke assisted with finding the man near the Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks between Ill. 26 and Union Road.

Mandrell had high praise for the officers.

“I’m just so proud of you guys for placing yourselves in harm’s way,” he said. “Your incredible judgment and incredible communication [with Shippert] saved a man’s life.”

Mandrell said Shippert, who was unable to attend the meeting, will also receive a certificate of recognition.

Mandrell said Monday that Rockwood has been named Polo American Legion Police Officer of the Year and is in the running for a state award.

A former commander of the Oregon VFW has been charged with embezzling several thousand dollars from the post.

Rusty Barnes, 47, of Davis Junction, is facing seven counts of felony theft for incidents that occurred from June 20, 2016 to Jan. 18, 20187 while he was the commander of the post.

After cool spring, summer heat finally arrives Research begins on families who gave windows at St. Mark’s

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator Polo Historical Society The heat feels good as we get ready for July and the kids need some good warm weather for swimming.

This week Linda Gall and I gathered at the museum to talk about some windows at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.

When the church was rebuilt following the fire, 48 beautiful art glass windows were put in by a number of families.

We are looking now at those families and the part they played in our community.

By Karen Merlak As the temperatures rise for the summer season, we remember several months ago we experienced record-breaking cold.

In all of our extremes, God is with us. He is our protector and comforter.

For all the ways we are loved, we give our thanks to Him. This morning in church, we were greeted by Deb Ohlwine.

Our special music for the morning was a song from Larry Riffle on his harmonica.

Playing along with recorded accompaniment, Larry played “All the Way My Savior Leads Me,” one of his wife, Judy’s, favorites.

and glance every now and then at the windows, how many of us look at the names and wonder about who those people really were at that time?

The fire must have been devastating to the church family and yet people quickly stepped up to replace their church home.

As I looked down the list of names Linda had prepared, I noticed some of them had already been researched so I started with those.

The first familiar name was H. B. Hunt and I pulled out his file. I had already gathered facts on Mr. Hunt because of a cake server we have in our family.

We always called it the “Jennie Hunt Cake Server” and it is very Jennie was the beautiful. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hunt.

Jennie was quite a worker in the Lutheran Church being the secretary of the Women’s Missionary Society and the Librarian of the Sunday School.

Her family had given generously

to the church and Carthage College, a Lutheran college.

When Jennie died in 1942, she had left to the church $1,000. The church council decided to use the money by installing the electronic tower chimes in her memory.

They had a powerful amplifying system which could be heard onehalf mile from the church.

It was an interesting adventure during the years we had the tower chimes. Some people liked them and some people did not!

If you wanted to sleep on a Sunday morning you did not want to hear “Rock of Ages” floating in through your bedroom window. We did not have air conditioning then for people in their homes.

Jennie also left some of her family silverware and glass dishes to the church so they could be sold to church members.

My mother was lucky enough to get the Hunt Family cake server. It is very beautiful with an engraved H

on the handle.

One day I turned it over and engraved on the back was: P. J. Edwards, March 10th 1881. I assumed that was the wedding date of Mr. and Mrs. Hunt.

P. J. Edwards Store was where Mr. Hunt did his apprenticeship as a young man in Hillsboro.

Linda was also researching the family from the Internet and found the obituary of Mrs. Hunt in the Dixon paper.

We found out quite a bit of information from the obituary. First the obit gave us Mrs. Hunt’s first name of Elizabeth and their wedding date.

It was not the same date as the engraved date on the cake server which was March 10, 1881. The date in the newspaper was March 3, 1881.

It is things like this that mean you cannot rest until you find out what is correct.

So now we go searching for Mr. Hunt’s obit and you cannot rest until you find it.

Pastor Charlotte Hoppe led the children’s message for our young people in our church family.

Filling the pew this morning were Katelyn, Laura, Harper, Amelia, and Joelle. Joelle, granddaughter of Ron and Sharon Baker, was visiting our church.

We are slowly making more progress on our church building.

Our building committee continues to work on the decision-making part of the process. The delays caused by the weather have not dampened our spirits.

This past Friday evening, I joined my friend, Amy, for a movie in Freeport.

We had the advantage of a longer drive which allows for a longer visit.

I am amazed and blessed at the friendships that have developed over the years. I know that I am not alone.

My children have been very busy preparing for trips of their own.

Stephanie is visiting Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where Joao Vitor has been interning for the summer.

My daughter-in-law, Ema Merlak, is preparing for a journey on the

Pacific Coast Trail.

Ema, with the support of her husband, Matt, will be hiking from the north end of the trail and end near the southern border of California.

We will be praying for her safety on this once-in-a-lifetime journey.

This past January, I started a new journey of my own. I have been accepted into the graduate program for Elementary Education at Northern Illinois University.

With the encouragement of friends and family, my goal is to become an elementary teacher.

With the heat and humidity building, we are always at a greater risk of storms. Today was no exception.

Storms with strong winds and lightning can be very scary and in some ways, they are a great relief.

As the first round of storms moved through the area, I felt the relief of the cool breeze and uncomfortable humidity virtually disappeared.

A little later in the evening, an impressive cloud moved across the sky, once again, providing relief from the afternoon heat.

Sometimes, it doesn’t make sense that the scariest part of the after-

noon would be just what we need to break the hot, steamy conditions.

Just like in our own lives, we may not understand why we are facing our own storms, and yet, we can find a strange sense of relief.

There is comfort when we rely completely on God as everything around us is falling apart.

I wonder if God is simply reminding us to look to Him. So many times in my own life, I have watched my plans crumble, only to realize, He was completely in control.

As we face the next problem, we can take comfort in knowing that our loving Father is with us. We are not alone.

Just like the storm brings relief from the summer heat, we know that there is relief for any struggle when we trust everything to God. I hope to see you next week in our church when Pastor Charlotte continues her enlightening series, Summer of Love.

There is room in our church family for you and your family. Come and love, worship, and praise the Father with us.

Senior center plans trip to Chicago museum

The Polo Senior Center will sponsor a day trip to the Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago on Monday, Sept. 16.

The Jodi Beach Quartet will make its debut at the Mt. Morris Jamboree on Friday, July 12 at 7 p.m. at the Reckmeyer Band Shell on the downtown campus.

“Jodi has performed on our band shell stage as a featured soloist with the Kable Concert Band in the recent past, but this will be the first time she performs with her band for a free, two hour show,” said event organizer Larry Ubben.

Beach is more than a singer and pianist. She is a storyteller, a theme-weaver, a scrapbook of lives presented in song, he said.

“Her performances invite the audience on a sentimental journey of melodies and lyrics that will leave them smiling and bring a tear to their eyes,” Ubben said. “If you ask her mother when Jodi first began to sing, she will look at you with a very sincere face and ask, ‘When hasn’t she?’”

Truly from birth Beach has been warming people’s hearts with pure and beautiful vocal tones, Ubben said.

At the age of five she started piano lessons and could read sheet music

before she could read English.

She continued her musical studies at Judson University and Northern Illinois University, and went on to form the award-winning Jodi Beach Trio, with whom she has recorded six albums and toured throughout the country.

The Let Freedom Ring Committee will serve hot dogs, hamburgers, brats, chips, drinks, and desserts starting at 6 p.m. with all proceeds going to next year’s event.

BY LARRY LOOMIS Play continued this past week with often threatening skies.

On June 25, Polo Two of the Junior Miss Division hosted a team from Stockton.

In what turned out to be one of the more thrilling games of the season the guests managed to ease by Polo by a 14-13 margin.

Stockton scored a solo run in the top of the first inning.

Polo responded with six runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-1 lead after one.

Izabella Witkowski doubled to open the game. Reagen Grenoble singled to drive in Witkowski.

A stolen base and an infield out put the lead run on third with just one down.

Alayna Young then smacked a sharp single to center to easily score Grenoble.

Five base on balls later, with a hit batsman and a fielders’ choice thrown in, saw the hometown ladies bolt to a five run lead.

Polo’s lead did not last long as Stockton utilized five walks, two crucial errors and a single to post eight runs on the board as the vis-

For the game, Polo had six hits with Camyrn Cox and Alayna Young each having a single and a double.

Stockton collected 10 hits.

On June 26, Polo One of the Junior Miss Division hosted Eastland One where they posted an 11-5 victory.

Polo jumped off to a 7-1 lead after an inning and never surrendered the lead. Polo got eight walks in the inning.

A double by Leah Tobin and a single by Camryn Jones was all that Polo needed to get off to a good start.

Eastland picked up a pair of runs in both the second and third innings to keep the game close.

After three innings of play, Polo led by a 7-5 margin.

The home town ladies added four

insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth as time expired.

Lydia Kelly reached on a leadoff error.

Four consecutive walks and a big run scoring single by Ellie Merrill saw a total of four runs come home to give Polo its’ final margin of victory.

Polo had but three hits for the night while the visitors had as many.

On June 28, Polo One hosted Savanna of the Junior Miss Division.

Polo had one of those nights where nothing went right as they dropped a 17-1 decision to the visitors.

Following a scoreless first, Polo’s pitching collapsed as 11 walks were issued while surrendering a double and a single.

The eight run limit per inning was reached as Savanna took an 8-0 lead.

Polo picked up their only run of the game in the bottom of the inning.

Leah Tobin reached on a single to left, stole second and third and came in to score on an attempted pickoff of Tobin at third.

That was all the Polo offense could muster in the route as Tobin’s hit was the only one.Savanna had eight hits.

Heat, humidity fail to deter KB Tough Runners Ninety-one runners took part in the 2019 KB Tough Run on June 29 at the White Pines Ranch, west of Oregon.

Runners battled hilly terrain, hot temperatures, and high humidity to raise money for area residents facing medical challenges and rising costs.

Carson Andrew won the 5K in 18 minutes and 41 seconds.

The KB Tough Run is the major fundraising event for the KB Fund that was established to help those in the community who are burdened by a medical crisis.

More than 70 families have been helped by the KB Fund since its formation. Their needs have ranged from expenses related to cancer treatments, chronic illness, accident recovery, special needs therapy, premature births and more.

The KB Tough Run was initially started in 2012 by April Roos, a young Oregon woman who was diagnosed with cancer.

April died June 6, 2018 at age 37, just a few weeks shy of the fundraiser she spearheaded.

The event takes its name from a pep talk April’s dad, Gary French, also of Oregon, used to whip up team spirit for April’s youth softball team he coached, goading the girls during the huddle to “kick butt.”

After a parent raised some concerns over the catchphrase, the team shortened it to KB. Years later, when April went up against a tougher opponent than she ever faced on the field, she decided to take her dad’s advice and was determined to kick cancer’s butt.

April celebrated being cancer-free in 2013, but the disease returned. Then in 2015, the disease went into remission and there was no evidence of it during PET scans.

But then her roller coaster ride with cancer took a turn for the worse in 2017 when the disease returned and she started undergoing chemotherapy again.

Through it all, she was determined to pay it forward by helping raise money for the KB Fund.

Mosquito pool near Polo tests positive

Ogle County Health Department administrator Kyle Auman confirmed last week that the first positive mosquito pool for West Nile virus has been reported in the county this year.

“With this being the first positive sample, maintaining vigilance to prevent exposure is extremely important,” Auman said June 26.

Monitoring for West Nile virus in Illinois includes laboratory tests for mosquito batches, dead crows, blue

which has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird.

Common symptoms include fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches. Symptoms may last from a few days to a few weeks.

However, four out of five people infected with West Nile virus will not show any symptoms.

In rare cases, severe illness including meningitis or encephalitis, or even death, can occur.

People older than 50 and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness from West Nile virus.

Precautions include practicing the three “R’s” – reduce, repel, and report.

Make sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens. When outdoors, wear shoes and socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt, and apply insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR 3535 according to label instructions.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following arrests.

June 25 Andrew P. Rucker, 19, of Leaf River, was arrested for driving on a suspended license after a traffic stop at 11:25 a.m. in the 200 block of South Walnut Avenue in Forreston. He was also cited for not wearing a seat belt.

Haldane Towing removed the vehicle from the location. Rucker was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Kevin Mon, no age given, of Mt. Carroll, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop at 9:28 p.m. in the 17,000 block of West Milledgeville Road.

Russell Warner, 53, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license revoked after a traffic stop for an equipment violation at 10:57 p.m. on I39 at mile marker 102.

He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

June 27 Ricardo Sanchez, 25, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license revoked on Illinois 251 in Davis Junction after being stopped for speeding. He was held in lieu of bond at the Jail.

June 26 Kristina D. McNutt, 48, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop for an equipment violation at 1:49 a.m. in the 8,000 block of North Illinois 251. She was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Sieanna Mitchell, 62, of Sycamore, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop at Illinois 64 and Woodlawn Road for not displaying a front license plate. Mitchell

June 28 Martin Chavez, 38, of DeKalb, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He was held in the Ogle County Jail on a full cash bond of $2,366 pending a court appearance.

Jaime Carter, 38, of Oregon, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for drug court sanctions. He was held in the Ogle County Jail pending a court appearance.

Dan Knaub, 31, of Leaf River, was arrested on two outstanding Ogle County warrants, one for failure to appear and the second for a petition to revoke probation. He posted the $350 full cash bond for the first and was released on $5,000 recognizance bond for the second. He is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 12.

Rusty Barnes, 47, of Davis Junction,

was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for theft. He was released on a $10,000 recognizance bond and is scheduled to appear in court July 31.

June 29 Nicholas W. Gillis, 41, of Big Rock, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after a traffic stop at 10:23 p.m. at Illinois 64 and Chana Road. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

June 30 Michael Peterson, 51, of Byron, and Dena Peterson, 49, of Byron, were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after a single vehicle accident at 12:18 a.m. at the intersection of East Illinois 72 and Marrill Road.

Michael was also issued citations for improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Dena was also issued a citation for unlawful parking.

Both were transported to the Ogle County Jail where they were held in lieu of bond.

Brandon Barber, 35, of Rochelle, was arrested for driving while license

suspended after a traffic stop at 11:01 a.m. on Lost Nation Road just into Lee County. Barber was also issued citations for speeding and operating an uninsured vehicle. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

July 1 Deputies, along with the Monroe Center, Davis Junction, and Kirkland ambulances, responded at 6:30 p.m. to a two-vehicle crash at Mulford Road and Illinois 72.

A car driven by Tommie Roberts, 58, of Cortland, was southbound on Mulford Road and then failed to yield after stopping at the intersection with Illinois 72.

Roberts’ car was struck by a eastbound van driven by Rogelio Guerra, 37, of Belvidere.

Roberts was transported by ambulance to Kishwaukee Hospital, DeKalb, and Guerra was transported by ambulance to OSF St. Anthony Medical Center, Rockford.

The injuries to Roberts and Guerra appeared to be minor and not lifethreatening. Roberts was cited for failure to yield.

David Coil, 32, Rochelle, pleaded guilty

June 26 to two counts of possession of a controlled substance.

Judge Robert Hanson sentenced him to 90 days in jail, which is remittable upon successful completion of 24 months probation.

Hanson also ordered him to submit to DNA testing and random drug testing, cooperate with and satisfactorily complete psychological or substance abuse assessments or treatment as recommended, perform 30 hours of public service work, and pay total fines and costs of $ 3,513.

Two additional counts of possession of a controlled substance were dismissed pursuant to plea agreement.

OBITUARIES H. HARLAN BAKER Memorial services for H. Harlan Baker, 96, of Mt. Morris, will be held on Saturday, July 13 at 11 a.m. at Disciples United Methodist Church, Mt. Morris.

Visitation will be held on July 13 from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.

Harlan died on Friday, Feb. 22, 2019 at Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, Mt. Morris He was born on Dec. 12, 1922 in Pine Creek Township, the son of Harry H. and Bertha (Tholen) Baker.

NANCY K. DICKSON Nancy K. Dickson, 71, died peacefully at her home in Ankeny, Iowa.

Nancy was the first-born child of Robert Dickson and Esther (Hedrick) Dickson, who lived in Mt. Morris.

She married Mounder classmate Larry Wisnosky in 1971 and divorced over two decades later.

After she graduated from Mt. Morris High School in 1966, she went to Western Illinois University, Macomb, where she studied mathematics and German but graduated with a B.A. in Philosophy.

She also attended graduate school at the University of Illinois in Urbana and North Dakota State University in Fargo.

In graduate school, she studied the administration of higher and continuing

CLARA L. FOSTER Clara Lucille Ginger Foster, 85, of Forreston, died on Saturday June 29, 2019 at FHN Memorial Hospital, Freeport.

She was born on May 25, 1934 in East Peoria, the daughter of Joseph Andrew and Estella Marie (Berg) Ausmus.

She married David W. Ginger on Aug. 27, 1954 in Lee County. He died on October 13, 1996.

DONNA A. RUNTE Donna Arlene (Stamm) Runte, 87, of Forreston, died peacefully at her home on Friday, June 28, 2019.

She was born in Stephenson County on Oct. 11, 1931, the daughter of Milford and Elta (Lestikow) Stamm.

Donna graduated from Forreston High School.

Donna married Willard Runte on Sept.

15, 1952.

She worked many years at Burgess

He graduated from Mt. Morris High School Class of 1940 and he received his bachelor of science degree in Engineering from the University of Illinois in the Class of 1948.

Harlan married Marion Knodle on March 22, 1947 in Mt. Morris. She preceded him in death on Nov. 5, 2015.

He served in the United States Army during World War II in Europe.

Harlan worked as an engineer with the Marketing Department at Commonwealth Edison, retiring in 1981 after 35 years.

He lived his life in northern Illinois and Mt. Morris area.

Harlan was a member of the Mt. Morris Disciples United Methodist Church, Methodist Men’s Club, Methodist Board of Trustees, Kiwanis, National Woodcarver’s Association, Mt. Morris VFW Post 3639, Illinois State 4-H Committee, American Legion, Plainview Cemetery Board, Senior Citizens Board, Registered Professional Engineer State of Illinois, American Institute of Plant Engineers, and he taught at the Chicago Lighting Institute for six years.

Harlan is survived by his children, Robert (Maria) Baker, Cary, and Susan (Allen) Skaggs, Tampa, Florida; two grandchildren, Lina Marie, St. Paul, Minnesota, and Patrick Robert Baker, Woodstock; sister-in-law, Lila Baker, Mt. Morris.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marion; brothers, Francis and Sherwood Baker.

Burial was at Plainview Cemetery, Mt. Morris. Memorials to Disciples United Methodist Church or the Mt. Morris Senior Center.

She worked in higher education for more than 20 years and retired as an administrator and instructor at the Des Moines Area Community College.

Indeed, her passion for education spanned her whole life. Examples include rallying a Parent-Teacher Association in the 1980s to influence the naming of a new high school, to her nearly last communication in a family group chat reacting to a granddaughter’s enjoyment of a selective college-for-kids program, which was a beaming smile.

Nancy consistently sought joy and happiness in all things around her.

Whether a routine e-mail reminder at work, correcting one of her children’s mistakes, or even training a misbehaving pet, she always carried herself in a

fun and positive way.

She was particularly adept at making otherwise unpleasant situations pleasant or even fun.

As just one of countless examples, a few years after being diagnosed with the pulmonary disease which eventually claimed her, one day she swallowed her pride and used a motorized scooter at the grocery store.

Being her first time riding such a device she collided with isles and other store property numerous times.

Instead of being ashamed or risking more pulmonary stress by walking, she began referring to using motorized scooters as “taking the basher,” and developed a comical wave for all future collisions.

Her survivors include two children,

Elizabeth Wisnosky, of Iowa City, Iowa, and David Wisnosky, of College Park, Maryland; two grandchildren, Grace Wisnosky and Faye Wisnosky, of Iowa City; two siblings, Jan Franklin, of San Diego, California, and James Dickson, of Mt. Morris. She has several surviving cousins including Diane Swengle, of Mt. Morris.

Her parents and her youngest brother, Steven Dickson, preceded her in death.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, July 6 at 10 a.m. at the Mt. Morris Church of the Brethren and will be followed by a Celebration of Life service at 11 a.m. at the church and burial at Oakwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to Brain & Behavior Research Foundation, bbrfoundation.org.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 6 at 10:30 a.m. at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home, Forreston. Rev. Dr. Matthew Rosebrock will officiate.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. also at Burke Tubbs, Forreston. Burial will be in Adeline Cemetery. A memorial has been established.

Battery in Freeport, Shannon Nursing Home, and like many women of her day, she worked hard on the family farm while raising her family.

She enjoyed her family and helping in Children’s Church as a member of North Grove Evangelical Church, rural Forreston.

She also enjoyed cooking, counted cross stitch, gardening, and having family come and freeze endless quarts

of corn.

Beverly A. Weber, 94, a longtime member of the Dixon community, died on Thursday, June 20, 2019 in Metamora after a brief battle with cancer.

Bev was born on Dec. 3, 1924 in Mattoon to Frank and Gertrude Roberts Barber.

She was raised on a farm in Neoga with her parents and two brothers.

Bev met her husband Stanley Weber at the University of Illinois and they were married on Aug. 31, 1947 at the First Presbyterian Church of Neoga.

The education system brought Bev and Stan to Dixon in 1963.

Bev retired from teaching at the Dixon

May 19, 1989.

She worked on the family farm. Lucille loved dogs, and she raised and showed Samoyed dogs.

ILLINOIS STATE POLICE The Illinois State Police report the following activities in District 1, which includes Ogle, Lee, Carroll, and Whiteside Counties and is headquartered in Sterling.

June 22 Blake D. Ebersole, 28, of Sterling, was stopped for failure to signal when required on Fourth Avenue at Third Street in Rock Falls at 1:05 a.m. and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal transportation of alcohol, failure to signal when required and failure to notify the secretary of state of an address change. He was released

after posting his IL driver’s license and a $1,000 I-Bond.

Julian M. Robledo, 30, of Rockford, was stopped for speeding on I-39 northbound at milepost 109 in Ogle County at 7:14 p.m. and charged with driving while license suspended, expired registration, child restraint violation, and speeding. He was released on a $1,500 I-Bond.

Manuel Nunez, 40, of DeKalb, was stopped for speeding on Illinois 38 at Woodlawn Road in Ogle County at 12:15 a.m. and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, endangering the life of a child and speeding. He was released after posting his driver’s license and a

$1,000 I-Bond.

June 23 The Illinois State Police investigated a two-vehicle crash at 1:36 a.m. involving a Savanna Police Department squad car.

The investigation revealed Christopher M. Kniss, 21, of Lanark, was driving a 2009 Dodge Ram pickup truck eastbound on Chicago Avenue at Keller Street when he drifted out of his lane to the right while manipulating his cell phone, side-swiping a Savanna Police Department squad car stopped on the shoulder and occupied by Officer Randy Craft.

Kniss was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, leaving the

scene of a crash, improper use of cell phone, improper lane usage, and expired registration.

There were no injuries and Kniss was released on an I-bond.
