Longtime county sheriff, board member dies Brooks served county for half a century

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Ogle County lost one of its most dedicated public servants Sunday with the death of longtime sheriff and county board member Jerry Brooks.

Brooks, 86, served the county for 50 years, beginning as a deputy sheriff in 1963, then as sheriff from 1970 to 1990, and finally on the county board for 21 years.

“Jerry Brooks meant a lot to many people in Ogle County, but everyone who knew him could honestly just call him their friend,” said Ogle County Board Chairman Kim Gouker. “Of all that we worked on together over the years, I will most remember Jerry Brooks as my friend. And, I will miss him.”

The county board made Brooks an honorary county board member for life in 2016 after his final term ended.

According to the resolution passed then, Brooks’ name had appeared on 44 different ballots without a single loss.

Over the years, he ran for sheriff, the

Jerry Brooks National Sheriffs Board of Directors, county board, and Republican precinct committeeman.

Born and raised in Ogle County, Brooks said in a 2016 interview that he appreciated the opportunity to serve.

“I want to thank the residents of Ogle County for allowing me to serve them all those years,” he said. “This is a good county, and it has good people.”

Brooks also said during the interview that he really didn’t plan to go into law enforcement.

In fact, he was quite happy with the job he had selling farm supplies in Lee County.

That all changed, Brooks said, one Saturday night in December of 1962 when his uncle Leonard Warner, an Ogle County deputy, asked Brooks to ride along with him while he was on duty.

Early in the patrol, Warner said he needed to stop at home. When he returned to the squad car he said he didn’t feel well and wanted Brooks to take over for him.

Warner said he had cleared it with then-sheriff Bill Spencer for Brooks to finish his shift.

Before the night was over, Brooks had broken up two fights, and it wasn’t long until he was filling in regularly on Saturday nights.

He took a pay cut to become a full-time deputy a few months later.

“I loved law enforcement,” Brooks said.

“That’s why I took the pay cut and that’s why I ran for sheriff.”

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 8 at 10 a.m. at Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Oregon.

The four-day festival is packed with family fun that starts with the pool games at 5:30 p.m. at the city pool and then a 5K run at 6 p.m. on the opening evening.

“Down on the Farm” is the theme of the festival which will be held through Sunday, June 16.

Fireworks will be the highlight of activities on Thursday, June 13 at dusk on the high school football field.

Other Thursday evening events include a Merchandise Bingo Tent, dunk tank, the Little Miss and Mr. Contest, and Quartermania with a silent auction.

Great American Shows is once again providing carnival rides from Thursday evening through Sunday afternoon.

Kids Day is Friday from 12 to 5 p.m.

Rockin’ River Fest, an all ages, family friendly event will be held on Saturday, June 15 in Oregon.

The event includes outdoor fun, interactive games for the young and young at heart, local food, live entertainment, competitive events, and a beer garden.

The majority of the activities take place on the banks of the Rock River, on north Second Street between Franklin and Washington Streets.

The “Adventure Triathlon” co-hosted with the Oregon Park District, kicks off at Oregon Park East before the event gates open.

band covering all genres of rock from the 80’s, 90’s, and 00’s will kick off the staged portion of the event at 4:30 p.m.

“Hillbilly Rockstarz”, Chicago’s number one country band will take the stage at 8 p.m.

“Bring your lawn chair, or gather with friends around available seating,” Dickson said.

“The success of community events like this is made possible through the support of local businesses and citizens who recognize the value of investing in their hometown. This “celebration of summer” showcases unique and engaging experiences for all ages, builds hometown pride, and is an opportunity to “give back” to the community,” Dickson said.

“This is a collaborative effort and is a direct result of volunteers brainstorming, pooling their skills and resources, and contributing hundreds of volunteer hours to create a safe, fun, entertaining time for all.”

Gates open at noon, with children under 12 FREE of charge, ages 13-17 are $3, and adults are $5.

Entry points are at Washington and Second Streets, and at Franklin and Second Street.

“Please note – proof of age is required to be served in the beer garden so be prepared to show your ID for a wristband,” Dickson said.

4U Charities auction raises $16,000 for Polo kids

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com A fundraiser started six years ago to pay for Polo students’ needs brought in a record total last month.

The 4U Charities auction May 18 raised more that $16,000 for items the school district’s budget doesn’t cover.

“It was the biggest one ever,” said event organizer Jeff Grobe, who hosts the annual event at his business, Jeff’s Refs in downtown Polo.

Some of the more unusual items donated for the auction were two handmade tables, one designed as a full-service beverage cart and the other made with a marble top, and two wooden farm signs, made for the Nelson and Dollmeyer farms.

They also raffled off a freezer full of meat.

Grobe, who coaches girls basketball at Polo Community High School, said he started the fundraiser when his team needed new uniforms and the school budget didn’t stretch that far.

“It goes for anything the school can’t afford or hasn’t budgeted for. It’s snowballed bigger than I ever thought it would,” he said. “We’ve got an awesome committee — they’re a bunch of great people who do a lot of work.”

A 5K run is also held each year to raise funds to buy milk for low-income students.

First Fridays will launch a fantastic music festival weekend on Friday, June 7 at 7 p.m. at the Mt. Morris Moose Family Center, 101 Moose Drive, Mt. Morris.

First Fridays will be followed on Saturday, June 8 by the Mt. Morris Porch Fest and First Fridays regular Jerry Tice’s Jerry’s Berry Farm Music Festival at Ridott.

The First Fridays format features each musician (or band) taking 15 minutes at center stage and continuing until each group has been featured.

Instruments are all acoustic and professional sound system engineering is provided by Mike Bratt.

Talented musicians from across northern Illinois, and often neighboring states, appear on a regular basis.

Rainy, chilly weather creates strange growing season

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator Polo Historical Society Every now and then we get a day that makes you feel like summer.

The foliage of plants is enormous but the blooms are rather skimpy.

It has been a strange growing season so far and the standing water is everywhere.

On Memorial Day we had some family members here and we spent an hour in the basement until the tornado warnings were over.

Basements are not my most favorite places. Eagle Point was no different than in town and if we do this many times I will need to make a cozy corner.

Huddling over the cat litter box is not the ideal place to visit with family.

At some point we did manage to visit the cemeteries at Fairmount and

By Karen Merlak We are very grateful for the reprieve from the rain showers and storms.

Our prayers continue to be with our farmers as they continue to work in the fields.

We know that our God will not leave us during the storm. Our God is an awesome god.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Sandra Ford.

Our special music was a song performed by Chuck Kearns, “Midnight Cry.” Chuck was accompanied by his wife, Bev Kearns, on piano.

Pastor Charlotte Hoppe started an intriguing, new sermon series called the “Summer of Love.”

All the flags at Dixon are always wonderful to see and they were able to have them out.

That was the first time the Naperville family had seen all the family burial plots. Some dated back to the 1920s.

Recently at Kenney Bender’s graveside services the weather cooperated and it was a beautiful day.

I had to park quite a ways away and I was a tad concerned how I would handle all the standing.

Then I saw a bench under the tree close by in the Forney Family plot.

I shared the bench with Leonard Bender’s wife, Connie.

I was impressed with all the Army personal taking part in the services and even getting it all ready.

I was more impressed with what they had to say about Kenny. How he “mothered” all the men under him and took good care of them. That

takes a special individual.

It reminded me of Capt. Morton Swift, of Polo, and the 15th Regiment.

He was another one that took good care of his men and even gave his blanket to those who needed more.

Winter time was not an easy time to be a soldier and sleeping out on the ground with the snow as an added cover was not ideal.

We will be getting ready this week for Polo Historical Society meeting and we will have a bit of show and tell.

An antique horse from the 1920s has been given to the museum by the family of Bill Jones.

Everyone will want to see it before it goes to Aplington House and the children’s room.

We do have a nice collection of children’s toys in our children’s section.

I wish there were not so many stairs to climb to reach this part of the house.

Older homes kept people physically fit as they climbed the stairs every day.

We also have a set of decorated spoons that originally came from Ross and Ina Hostetter.

They were sent by Carla Personette who is probably a granddaughter of Ross and Ina. The spoons will go in our show case.

The Alumni Banquet was this past weekend and it was nice to see people from a distance.

Our group gets smaller each year and it is nice that some people still make an effort to get there.

I was honored to speak and relate how I got involved with volunteer work at the museum.

Polo is a good place to live and life is what you make it so the 22 years at the Polo Historical Society has been a great venture.

We still however, have work to do to keep things running smoothly.

Show & Swap Meet will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Registration for a volleyball tournament begins at 8:30 a.m. on the PCHS football field with the games starting at 9 a.m.

Youngsters can keep cool at the Kids Water Fights on Saturday starting at 10 a.m. at the Polo Fire Station.

Other Saturday events include a bags tournament, a talent show,

Twilight Bingo and music by Prowler and RIPT at the beer garden.

The Father’s Day Grand Parade will step off at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.

The festival will wrap up with a free family concert by Lyle Grobe and the Rhythm Ramblers on Sunday afternoon.

The 50/50 drawing will take place at 2 p.m. in the festival tent.

For our children’s message, Pastor Charlotte shared a story, puzzles, and treats with our children, Katelyn, Laura, Harper, and Amelia.

The start of our new building has been delayed due to the weather. We know that His work is completely in His hands.

The men of our church gathered for breakfast on Saturday morning.

In our church basement, Kent Nettz hosted the meal with Larry Riffle, John Engel, Jim Hopkins, Don Hay, and Paul.

This past Monday, I watched the Memorial Day parade with the many residents of Polo.

I joined my brother, Ben Bittinger, his wife, Jo, and their son, Garrett as son, to watch Hayden, who participated in the parade one last time.

Hayden joins our many family members in the parade. Our cousin, Luke Sheely, carried one of the flags in Polo.

Our cousin, Tom Bushman, carried a flag in the Dixon Memorial Day parade, honoring the many who lost their lives during their military

service.

This past Friday evening, I went to dinner with two dear friends, Tina and Mike Hernandez at a local restaurant in Sterling.

I met Tina just a couple of years ago and our friendship blossomed. It is always good to laugh with new and old friends.

This past Saturday evening was the 146th annual Alumni Banquet at Polo Centennial School.

Our speaker for the evening was Betty Obendorf, who highlighted her work with the Polo Historical Society and volunteerism.

Two generations from the Hopkins family attended the banquet, Lyle and Sheryl Hopkins and grandson, Brad Ohlwine with Lindsay Montross.

We had a great night of visiting, enjoyed a wonderful dinner and interesting program.

This morning I went downstairs to start my laundry and found that my basement had water again.

To say I was disappointed is an understatement. As I inspected the damage, I realized the area was much

smaller than in years past.

The water had already stopped flowing and I was only left with the clean-up. In a short time, the job was completed.

Even though I was upset about having to clean up the mess, I was grateful to find the worst was already over.

In years past, I would start cleaning up the water only to find it was still flowing into my home making the task seem never-ending.

In any situation, I know that I can face it with God’s help.

All of my disappointments, frustrations, problems, big and small, are made easier to face knowing that God is on my side.

He never tires of hearing our prayers for relief. His love for us only continues to grow. We are truly blessed.

My hope will always be to fill our churches with those who are seeking a friend and a refuge in the storm.

Come and pray with us. Come and celebrate with us. There is room for you and your family in our little church in the country.

Kidz Cafe’ will serve meals to children starting on Monday, June 10 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall at Faith United Methodist Church in Polo.

A shuttle bus will be running in town at the designated pick-up points.

Kidz Cafe’ has had six success-

The salad bar and a shuttle service were added to this program in part due to the amount of donations received.

Dr. Mark McGuire, a graduate of Polo High School, University of Illinois, BS; University of Florida, MS; and Cornell University, PhD., has been awarded the 2019 University of Idaho Distinguished Professor Designation.

The award is given annually to three professors who have national and usually international recognition and have brought distinction to the University of Idaho throughout their activities.

“The older the better,” said Editor Vinde Wells. “We want to give our readers a glimpse of what living on a farm in Ogle County looked like in our grandparents day and the generations before.”

Information identifying any people who are pictured, what is happening, and where it took place should accompany the photos.

They are needed by Monday, June 10.

Rhythm Ramblers to perform June 14 Jamboree Lyle Grobe and the Rhythm Ramblers will return to the Mt. Morris Jamboree on Friday, June 14 at 7 p.m. at the Reckmeyer Band Shell on the downtown campus.

“This band, who’s appeared during all seven Friday concert seasons, always has the crowds line-dancing on the grass to toe-tapping while sitting in lawn chairs and on the new benches,” said event organizer Larry Ubben.

Grobe has been performing for many years starting in the early 1950s with two brothers, Harry and Richard Hackbarth.

They appeared at many shows in Lee County for years and began moving into Ogle County i n the late 50s at venues such as Castle Rock Bar on Illinois 2 south of Oregon.

Grobe was then was a radio announcer for WIXN which is now River Country 101.7 and managed the Skyline Lounge just outside of Dixon.

Many years have come and gone and Grobe still with the love of music keeps the band going by having weekly band rehearsals in his garage both summer and winter.

Drummer Dennis Milby, of Sterling, has been with Grobe since the Skyline days.

Diane Palmer usually joins the crew for these shows and sings lead and harmony vocals.

The Leaf River United Methodist Church will be on hand to serve Italian Beef sandwiches, hot dogs, chips, dessert, and drinks.

Several local small business vendors will be on the campus during the show, including Jen’s Artisan Breads and Pecatonica River Honey.

The Student Art Show continues at the Encore Old Sandstone Art Gallery next door, featuring artwork from students in the Oregon School district from 6 to 9 p.m.

The evening kicks off with the Mt. Morris Community Farmer’s Market, at the corner of Illinois 64 and Wesley Avenue from 4 to 7 p.m. every Friday through October.

“Come join the fun on our beautiful, historic campus in the center of Mt. Morris, two blocks south of Riute 64 on Wesley Avenue and be ready to enjoy the sweet serenity of live music in the great outdoors,” Ubben said.

The rain location will be the Mt. Morris Moose Family Center at 101 Moose Drive.

NATURE NEWS Crosby to speak to Wild Ones about tall grass prairie Cindy Crosby will be the guest speaker at the Wild Ones meeting on Thursday, June 20 at 7 p.m. at the Rock Valley College Physical Education Center PEC0110 (lower level), 3301 N. Mulford Rd., Rockford.

She will talk about “The Tallgrass Prairie: Grocery Store, Apothecary, and Love Shop.”

Native Americans and early settlers saw the tallgrass prairie as supplying groceries, art supplies, medicine, and love charms.

Crosbywill present interactive stories of prairie ethnobotany – how people used prairie plants throughout history and the potential these plants may hold for the future.

She is the author, compiler or contributor to more than 20 books, most recently “Tallgrass Conversations: In Search of the Prairie Spirit” (2019) with Thomas Dean and “The Tallgrass Prairie: An Introduction” (2017).

Her masters degree in Natural Resources is from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

The KB Tough Run is the major fundraising event for the KB Fund.

Celebrate ag with “Down on the Farm” June 7-9 The 46th annual German Valley Days festival will salute Illinois Agriculture with the theme, “Down On The Farm.” It will kick off on Friday, June 7.

Activities will take place in the Ben Miller Park and along Church Street.

The Silver Creek SWIFT will serve a celebration supper beginning at 5 p.m. Friday.

A Little Miss & Mister Pageant, the presentation of the German Valley Area’s Most Valuable Person Award, and the announcement of “Bucket of Junk” competition winners will begin at 7 p.m.

At 8 p.m. local talent will take the stage to present “Hee Haw” German Valley 2019, reminiscent of the popular American Classic television show.

Saturday’s activities will begin with a pancake breakfast served by the Silver Creek ACTS Ministries from 6:30 to 10 a.m. at the German Valley fire station.

The fire station will also be the location for free FHN blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose screenings. Fasting for eight hours prior to glucose testing is recommended.

At 8 a.m. the “Run the Valley” 5K & Kids’ Fun Run will begin at the Ben Miller Park.

At 8:30 p.m., registration for the Antique Tractor Show, sponsored by the German Valley Golden Eagles 4-H Club, will begin at 310 Church St. Tractor games are scheduled at 3 p.m.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m. for the German Valley Lions Car Show to take place at 525 Church St. Car Show Awards will be presented at 2:30 p.m.

At 10:30 a.m., a Kiddie Tractor Pull for ages 3 through 10, will start on the ball diamond infield, a Farm Animal Display by the Robin Williams

Also at 11 a.m., an “Around the World (in GV)” Basketball Shooting Contest will begin on the park basketball court.

The German Valley Historical Museum will be open from noon to 6 p.m. This year’s special exhibit is Historical Photos.

The German Valley Days parade will begin with a fly over by Albertus Airport Pilots at 1:30 p.m.

At 2:30 p.m. a Pie Eating contest, sponsored by Vicki’s Baked Goods and More, will be held in the park shelter and the “Spotted Dog Three Peace Rock & Roll Show” will be onstage.

Activities at 3 p.m. will include a Bags Tournament, sponsored by Alcohol Party Catering, and stilt walking by Jason Kollum.

The German Valley Fire Department will serve a pork chop dinner at the fire station from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. (shuttle service provided to and from the park).

“Hillbilly Horseshoes” competition will begin at 4:30 p.m. in front of the stage.

“Grass Attack” will perform onstage from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Headlining the evening’s entertainment will be a presentation by Greg Peterson of Assaria, Kansas, titled, “The Story of the Peterson Farm Brothers” A fireworks display in the Lake Baalton area will conclude the day’s activities.

It is sponsored by the German Valley Lions Booster Committee, the Village of German Valley, and Donna Smith. The rain date is Sunday, June 9.

On Sunday there will be a “Festival of Praise” worship service at 10 a.m. at Ben Miller Park. The rain location is Silver Creek Reformed Church.

Auditions for ‘The King and I” The Performing Arts Guild invites the public to join the cast of their fall musical production, “The King and I.” Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The King and I” is a moving, radiant story of East meets West.

The musical is based on the memoirs and experiences of Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher hired in the 1860s by the King of Siam as part of his drive to modernize his country.

The relationship between the King

and Anna is marked by conflict through much of the show, as well as by a love to which neither can admit.

Some of the memorable songs in “The King and I” include, Shall We Dance, I Whistle a Happy Tune, Getting to Know You and Something Wonderful.

The musical premiered on March 29, 1951. It ran for nearly three years, making it the fourth longest-running Broadway musical in history at the time, and has had many tours and revivals.

Auditions will be held on Monday, June 17, Tuesday, June 18, and Wednesday, June 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Pinecrest Grove library, 500 Evergreen Lane, Mt. Morris.

Materials will be provided for reading and vocal parts. The cast consists of vocal and non-vocal roles for children through adult, male and female.

Performances will be Nov. 8, 9,10 and 15, 16, 17 at the Pinecrest Grove Theatre.

2018-19 sports season had plenty of highlights T

ime for the annual recap of the 2018-19 sports year.

My highlight was the Forreston and Lena-Winslow semifinal football game. It had a little bit of everything - the memory of LW crushing Forreston’s 2017 title hopes, classic NUIC play, snow around the field, a tie late in the game, all-staters Isaiah Bruce, Ian Kuehl, Garett Badertscher and Mitchell Heinz, along with the pressure of a 1A state berth at stake.

Dom Christensen made people forget about his older brother AJ, with some big plays, including the kickoff return to glory.

After an earlier defeat to LW in the regular season, the Cardinal coaching staff took some chances with game-calling and it paid dividends the second time around.

After a brutal 3-week stretch of Milledgeville, Dakota and LW, the state title game was simply a coronation for the team. What an improvement from that first half of week 1 against Pec-Durand to November.

With Polo moving to 8-man football, it was fitting they advanced to the IHSA playoffs. Playing without Brady Webb and using a makeshift roster, it was remarkable they got that far.

They peaked in a win over Aquin and really set a tone for the year with a comeback win over Orangeville in the heat of August.

Look for Polo to be one of the top squads in 8-man in what promises to be one the most compelling stories for the upcoming year.

go to a district format in football for the 2020 year.

The only things that created more of a stir in the past 50 years of Illinois prep sports were eliminating the 1-class system for boys basketball and adding interscholastic sports for females.

Volleyball, Softball, Basketball Forreston girls athletics gets the near-miss award for volleyball and softball. For several years, they’re right there, but can’t get over the hump in the post season.

At the sectional volleyball, they had eventual state runner-up Galena on the ropes, but couldn’t close the deal. In volleyball, the margin is quite thing and Forreston could have just as easily been playing for a state title.

For the second year in a row, the softball team was on the verge of an upset in the regional final, only to lose in the final inning after having the lead.

About the only response I had to coach Kim Snider was the same one I had the year before - life doesn’t seem fair.

Polo basketball got that long-awaited boys basketball regional title after seven years. Of any team on mission, getting that regional was absolutely mandatory for Marco

basketball and its three 3-year starters Justin Young, Braiden Soltow and Webb.

With the area’s longest 20-win season streak at seven, it was boom or bust, especially with a dwindling talent pool. The class of the NUIC was East Dubuque, though Polo was good enough to beat River Ridge.

This may be minutia, but mention needs to be made of my favorite photo of the year. Taken by Earleen Hinton, who has diligently plied her trade for thousands of games over the years, it was in the paper a couple weeks ago.

Capturing Jace Coffey, Draven Wells, Badertscher and Webb enthusiastically imploring Christensen in a relay, it caught the face of sports as well as anything you will see. It was also cool to see Forreston and Polo kids cheering each other on.

From the tough injury department - Polo’s Alex Dusing going down in basketball. But, she’ll be back with the rest of the young kids from Polo and it will be interesting to see how they fare against all the other young talent in the NUIC.

Four Overtimes Can’t sum up the year without mention of the 4-overtime basketball game between Forreston and Dakota. Braeden Fyock was as clutch as anyone I saw play this year.

Top girls individual performance had to be what Katie Erdmann did on the volleyball court. She was the main cog for the Cardinals and every team knew that. That didn’t prevent her from nearly willing For-

reston to a longer state run.

Between Fyock against Dakota, Christensen in the Le-Win game and Coffey with three throws in a row over 170 feet in the discus in the state finals, it’s too hard to pick out a top male performance.

Is there a better overall athlete between Forreston and Polo than Webb with what he did in football and basketball, to go along with seven state medals in track? He gets my vote.

Next year Outlook What to look for in 2019-20?

Forreston football will be up near the top of the state rankings again.

They have skill in the backfield; can the line do its part?

Le-Win looks to be the main hindrance, with Dakota getting better.

One big change will be the divisions done geographically instead of by enrollment.

The Forreston girls will be solid in volleyball, basketball and softball.

The question remains - can they crack into the upper echelon of the post season?

With the emergence of Jordan Neuschwander, Bennett Soltow, Cayden Shelton and Christensen, F-P track will be better than originally thought for 2020. Look for Coffey to bring back the gold in the discus.

Before wrapping up for the year, let’s not forget about all the cheerleaders, pom pom and band members that give performances worthy of mention. This is more than just sports.

May 27 At 1:25 p.m., police investigated a hit and run traffic crash in the 100 block of S. 4th Street involving an unknown vehicle that struck a 2019 Dodge belonging to Barry L. Mingus, 52, of Oregon.

Mingus’ vehicle was parked behind the unknown vehicle. Anyone having any information, please contact the Oregon Police Department at 815-732-2162.

May 28 At 7:05 a.m., police responded to a suspicious person call in the 200 block of N. 3rd Street resulting in the arrest of Carl D. Pitt, 77, of Oregon, for criminal trespass to a vehicle. Pitt was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

May 29 At 3:42 p.m., police responded to a two-vehicle traffic crash in the 200 block of W. Washington Street involving a 2005 Lincoln driven by Joshua A.

Larrin, 34, of Sterling, and a 2008 Ford driven by Robert M. Bushman, 66, of Mt. Morris. Larrin was arrested for driving while license suspended. Larrin was also issued citations for improper use of registration and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Larrin was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

May 28 Johnny Reyes, 42, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for driving while license suspended. He was held in the Ogle County Jail in lieu of $10,000 (10%) bond pending a court appearance.

Shawn Kirby, 31, of Davis Junction, was arrested for disorderly conduct after deputies were called at 2:01 a.m. to a disturbance at 111 Autumnwood Lane. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

May 31 Stanley Josephitis, 43, of Forreston,

was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol after a two-vehicle crash at 9:23 p.m. in the 2800 block of West Illinois 72.

The vehicle he was driving collided with a vehicle driven by Kyle Bolen, 25, of Winnebago.

Both drivers and Bolen’s passenger, Craig McClure, 57, of Winnebago, refused medical treatment.

Josephitis was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

June 1 Sean Powers, 46, of Ashton, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of intoxicating compounds, and driving on a revoked license after a two-vehicle crash at 7:23 p.m. at Gurler and Stone

Roads.

A vehicle driven by Powers was eastbound on Gurler Road when it struck a westbound vehicle driven by Keri Spinelli-Wittenauer, 26, of Amboy.

Both were transported by Ashton ambulance to Rochelle Community Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.

Mark A. Velte, 25, of Leaf River, was arrested for possession of 10 to 30 grams of cannabis after a traffic stop at 11:38 p.m. at the Intersection of Illinois 72 and Triumph Road.

He was also issued a citation for improper head light, one head lamp.

Velte was then taken into custody and transported to the Ogle County Jail

where he was held in lieu of bond.

June 2 Daniel T. O’Neill, 39, of Pecatonica was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after a one-vehicle crash at 5:40 p.m. at the intersection of Hoisington and Water Roads.

He was also issued citations for failure to stop at an intersection, failure to wear seat belt, failure to stop at a stop sign, reckless driving and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

He was transported by Byron ambulance to the Swedish American Hospital, Rockford.

O’Neill was issued a $3,000 (10%) individual bond, with a court date of June 26.

Lorraine James, 95, died on Tuesday June 4, 2019 at Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, Mt. Morris.

Lorraine was born on Dec. 9, 1923 in Rockford, the daughter of Fred and Ruth (Swanson) Burdick.

She graduated from Rockford West High School in the Class of 1942.

Lorraine married Leonard James on Oct. 9, 1943 in Rockford. He preceded her in death on Jan. 13, 2013.

She was a member of Christian Churches all her life where she was a Sunday School teacher, on the missionary committee for 30 years, women’s fellowship, and she was baptized at the age of 16.

Lorraine is survived by her daughter, Cindy (Bob) Fulton, Mt. Morris; sons, Steve (Young Cha) James, Mt. Morris, and Bob James, Wheaton; eight grand-

children, Jason, Randy, Melissa, Faith, Joshua, Jared, Aaron, and Andrea; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Lorraine is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leonard; two grandchildren, Brian and Doug Fulton; three brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 11 at 11 a.m. at Finch

Funeral Home, 405 E. Hitt St., Mt. Morris, with the Pastor Merrill Davis officiating.

Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Mt. Morris.

Visitation will be on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Memorials have been established to Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, Mt. Morris Fire Department, and Serenity Hospice and Home.

OBITUARIES GERALD D. “JERRY� BROOKS Gerald D. “Jerry� Brooks, 86, of Oregon, went home to his Lord Jesus on Sunday, June 2, 2019.  Jerry was born July 6, 1932 to Ra K. and Dorothy (Warner) Brooks and was a life-long Ogle County resident. He graduated from Oregon High School in 1950 and served in the U.S. Army from 1952-54. He married Barbara A. Jones on Jan. 10, 1953 in Augusta, Georgia.  Following his military service, Jerry worked as a salesman for Ogle Service Company and general managed a successful grain and farm supply business (Dixon Co-Op) for many years.  During this time, he began working as a part-time patrol deputy with the Ogle

County Sheriff’s Department for seven years during which he developed a passion for law enforcement. Wanting to make a difference in his community, he ran for and was elected Ogle County Sheriff in 1970.  He was re-elected to four additional terms as sheriff before retiring in 1990.  He then went on to serve 21 years as an Ogle County Board Member.  Jerry was also a life member of the Oregon V.F.W. ; a member of the American Legion, a 40-year member of the Ogle County Farm Bureau; Ogle County Grange Citizen of the Year; served 12 years as an Ogle County Republican Pre-
