BY EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@oglecountynews.com Mother Nature’s surprise dose of winter weather didn’t stop friends and family of Maggie (Rosko) Meyer from turning out for the third annual Infinity Run & Family Event at the Chana Education Center in Chana on Saturday.

Just over 100 runners dug out their stocking hats and gloves and braved snow and wind to run in the 5K race held in memory of Maggie and her son Amos, of Byron, who tragically died at their home in October 2016.

“It was a beautiful turnout even though the weather was not o beautiful,” said LuAnn Rosko, Maggie’s mom, a Mt. Morris resident. “She would have loved it.”

The event was organized and hosted through The Maggie & Amos Foundation that was started by family and friends of Maggie and Amos following their deaths.

In the past two years, the event has raised more than $16,000 that has been donated back to area school teachers in classroom grants, to support materials for the Mt. Morris Public Library’s children’s section, and in scholarships for college students entering the field of special education.

The day is meant to honor Maggie and Amos, whose lives were tragically cut short on Oct. 19, 2016, when emergency crews arrived the Meyer home at 2020 N. Silverthorn Drive in Byron just after 6:30 a.m. to find the house consumed by a fire that was later determined to be deliberately set.

Maggie, 31, was found dead on a couch on the first floor of the burning home, and Amos was pronounced dead a short time later at Rockford Memorial Hospital.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department, Byron Police Department, Illinois State Police, and the Ogle County State’s Attorney’s office, are actively investigating the case.

The forecast for several inches of wet snow on Saturday didn’t dampen the enthusiasm for the afternoon fundraising event that included a USTAF certified, chip-timed 5k run, a one-mile fun run/walk, silent auction, and a free children’s fun zone with games and prizes.

LuAnn and her husband, Don, along with their son Mark and his wife Aimee and their children Eddie, Josephine, and Warren, bundled up to lead to the 1-mile fun run/walk around the school where Maggie taught.

As participants turned down West Avenue steady waves of wet snow streamed into their faces as cold winds whipped across the non-incorporated village.

The nasty weather didn’t deter Eddie and Josephine as they delighted in jumping into mud puddles as the group walked down a gravel alley. LuAnn said it was a scene Maggie would have liked.

“She would have said ‘oh come on, suck it up buttercup.’

She was loved by so many,” LuAnn said. “I just want to thank everyone for coming out despite the weather.”

Maggie’s friend and colleague Lynn Kalnins, who is also the assistant principal at the Chana Education Center, braved the weather outside trying to get both races started on time while making sure all the kids activities were running smoothly inside the school.

Event coordinator, Stephanie White, said 250 people had registered for the 5K and fun run.

“With the weather the way it is I am actually shocked with the turnout we have,” White said. “We are so fortunate to have

After five years roaming the prairie, the bison at Nachusa Grasslands seem to like their home.

What began as 30 bison relocated to the 3,800-acre natural prairie preserve, owned by The Nature Conservancy, near Franklin Grove has grown into a herd of 110, with more on the way.

Calving season is just beginning at Nachusa.

The numbers are right where the staff wants them, and they couldn’t be more pleased with how the bison herd has come along, and has become a big attraction to draw in visitors.

“Oh, yeah, they really are the rock stars. People are excited about the bison and are always asking about them,” said Cody Considine, resource ecologist for Nachusa. “I grew up in Dixon, and when I see people I know, they don’t ask about my family or anyone they ask about the bison.”

The goal was for the herd to hit

an optimum 110 animals, which happened last year. In fact, they had more bison than they would have liked last year so they had to find new homes for a few.

“Last fall we had our first bison sale because we reached our herd size that we want to maintain,” Considine said.

“We sold 23 animals, and there will be more this fall since we have about 30 to 40 calves each year.”

The baby bison boom happens in April and May, and already three calves have been born. As soon as the calves start coming, so do the crowds.

“As soon as the weather gets nice, people will flock out here to get a glimpse,” he said.

When Elizabeth Bach was hired as an ecosystem restoration scientist last year, she made it a priority to update how the staff keeps track of the bison herd.

“She’s really ramping up the science and research part. It’s pretty unique,” Considine said. “In fact, we recently worked with a bison researcher who completed a study on Nachusa.”

The new visitor center, which opened last summer, also has been a big success.

Three Ogle County solar farms approved by state

BY RACHEL RODGERS rrodgers@saukvalley.com Three Ogle County solar farm projects were among the 14 in the area that were picked during the first round of a state lottery for renewable energy credits.

Those chosen in the county include • 115.29 acres at 1226 W. Oregon Trail Rd., Oregon on property owned

by Bradley J., Donna S., and Erik P. Bauer and being developed by One Energy Development LLC; • 177.4 acres in the 8225 to 8500 block of West Haldane Road on property owned by Gary Bocker and being developed by DG Illinois Solar LLC; and • 65.78 acres south of 3788 N. Mt. Morris Rd., Mt. Morris, on property owned by Wilma Hongsermeier and being developed by Sunvest New Energy LLC. All three projects were approved by the Ogle County Board at special meeting on Jan. 10.

Ogle County Zoning office has had more than a dozen requests in the last year or so for special use permits to allow solar farms, mostly from the Stillman Valley area.

The state’s Future Energy Jobs Act, which was created in late 2016 and requires utility companies to get 25 percent of their energy from renewable sources by 2025, led to a boom of solar energy companies lining up projects to submit to the Illinois Power Agency in hopes of

garnering competitive solar renewable energy credits.

The agency was so inundated with project requests, especially in the community solar category where electricity would be sold to subscribers, that it triggered a lottery process.

The Sauk Valley has seen dozens of requests for special use permits to develop solar farms, but most of the projects are contingent on getting the credits. More than 40 of the proposed area projects were placed on a waiting list.

Most community solar developments are 2 megawatt projects, which typically cover about a dozen acres and generate enough energy to power around 350 homes.

The biggest solar farm proposal so far in this area is being considered in Lee County.

It would cover about 760 acres near Steward and generate enough energy to power 20,000 homes.

Junction Solar LLC is asking for a special-use permit to develop a 100-megawatt solar farm in Alto and Reynolds Townships on farmland owned by Larry and Julie Gittleson and Midwest Ag Investors LLC. The project would be built between Herman and Reynolds Roads southwest of Steward.

The proposal was scheduled to go before the Lee County Zoning Board on Thursday.

Is this weather an April Fool’s joke or what?

Civil War books have arrived at museum

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator Polo Historical Society Last year I went over to the plant sale at the high school on this particular weekend and came home to plant.

This year the plants are still huddling in the garage. I will wait a while to get flowering plants from the high school kids since they need to stay in where it is warm.

I think I heard someone say that the last time we had snow on this date was 1967.

I am sorry for all the kids and their prom outfits. No pictures in the green grass this year or out by the pond.

The roads also are just not good so I hope everyone drives slowly.

Yesterday was the funeral for Arlene Jecklin and it was good to see Mildred Fink Jecklin from Pinecrest. She is now over 100. Perhaps 104.

By Karen Merlak The spring snow melted away almost as fast as it fell this weekend.

The grass, flowers, and trees look for the light and warmth of the sun just we turn to Jesus for the light and warmth of His love and care.

For all of heaven’s gifts, we offer all of our praise.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Don and Vicki Hay. Bob Toms shared church family memories as part of our year-long celebration.

Pastor Charlotte Hoppe led the children’s message for Amelia, Katelyn, Laura, and Harper.

Today’s service was special as

and we had a nice short visit. She spoke of the good times we had many years ago at the Lutheran Church.

Then she said she had a number of good meals at the Isley home up the street.

I remember going to her wedding in Lanark as a young girl.

She was the sister-in-law to Arlene. Mildred married Fred Jecklin and Arlene married Jake Jecklin. They were twin brothers.

We all were together at the church in those early years.

At the luncheon I sat with Ad Beck and her girls Bev, Linda, and Donna.

Ad is 99 and she and Arlene would go for drives a few years ago when they were younger.

Also at our table was Marcia Riddle, Marilyn Ditzler, and Margie Immel. It was good visiting with everyone.

I need to do some research on Dale Beck so his daughters will get me some information.

Someone had suggested I find out about that business in Polo.

I just remember Dale from the river when we would all gather at the cabins for various occasions

and he would give us boat rides.

Another person I saw out at the cemetery yesterday was Judy Schmidt.

She has just come back from Lake Carroll to settle once more in Polo.

Had not seen her for a longtime.

It is sad to think now that the times we gather will be for funerals but that is life.

The Civil War books are here from the printer and now comes the job of getting them in order for those to be picked up, mailed or to be delivered.

We are very pleased with them and it is a job well done. But we still have work to do.

Kathy Pasch and I will be going to towns in northern Illinois t o present a power point on the 15th.

This is all about 10 towns and the men they sent to the Civil War. Many did not come back or they came back hurt and changed in so many ways, never to be the same again.

Women and children were left penniless. One wonders how did they survive? Did family help them?

When we get organized we will let Polo people know when to come to the museum to pick up their books.

we dedicated the gift of the pulpit that was given in memory of Robert Toms Jr. by his family.

Pastor Charlotte asked for the congregation to share about Robert’s service to the church. We will miss our dear friend.

Don and Vicki Hay have returned from a trip to Delaware for the Easter weekend.

The Hays visited with their son Mack Hay, his wife, Shea, and their children, Reef, Ellis, Remy, and Pippin.

While in Delaware, the Hay families attended a kite flying festival at Cape Henlopen State Park.

On the Saturday before Easter, the families celebrated their granddaughter Pippin’s first birthday with cake, homemade ice cream, cotton candy, and coloring Easter eggs.

The Hay families attended an Easter egg hunt at Canal Park in Lewes for the children, Reef, Ellis, Remy, and Pippin.

After Easter services on Sunday, the families took Ellis, Reef, and Remy fishing. Everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather and family time over the holiday.

This past Thursday evening, Lyle and Sheryl Hopkins traveled to Fremd High School in Palatine, for their granddaughter Theresa’s water polo game.

The senior players were honored at the game, including Theresa.

After the game, they joined their son, Mike Hopkins, his wife, Rena, and his daughter, Theresa, for dinner.

This past weekend, the Polo Community High School students participated in their annual prom.

Even with a day full of wet snow falling to the ground, my nephews, Hayden and Garrett Bittinger and the students of Polo had a wonderful evening.

After church, I took Jean Cunningham home. We agreed that we both enjoy the few minutes we have together on the ride.

Jean had brought a bunch of bright yellow daffodils to share with the church.

When I stopped at her home, she offered the beautiful flowers to me.

After some coaxing, I took a few from her vase, wrapped them in a

It is so wonderful to know that the God who takes care of the earth and all of His creatures, takes care of us, too.

We can rest in the knowledge that He loves us enough to send His care. We call on Him and He listens.

We have so much to be thankful for. We will be breaking ground for our new church building after the service.

My hope continues that we will continue to fill our area churches.

Farm Bureau announces scholarship recipients The Ogle County Farm Bureau recently named Natalie Carlson, Marissa Gorsegner, Brooklyn Hollis, Grace Mongan, Rebecca Hough, and Austin Strite as recipients of 2019 scholarships.

Brooklyn Hollis was awarded the Del Flessner Memorial Scholarship for $1,500.

This scholarship was created to

honor the legacy of long-time Ogle County Farm Bureau Manager Del Flessner.

Hollis is the daughter of Todd and Jodi Hollis, German Valley.

She graduated from Forreston High School and currently attends Highland Community College majoring in Dairy Science and Agribusiness.

Rebecca Hough and Grace Mongan were named winners of the $1,000 General Farm Bureau Scholarships.

Hough is the daughter of Rob and Lynnette Hough, Mt. Morris.

She will graduate from Oregon High School this spring and plans to major in Agriculture and Special Education at either Highland

Community College or University of Wisconsin-Platteville next fall.

Mongan is the daughter of Dan and Jean Mongan, Oregon.

She will graduate Oregon High School this spring and plans to attend the University of Illinois next fall majoring in Aerospace Engi-

Thomas R. Hughes President and COO Tom joined the bank in 1995 and with over 32 years of banking experience, specializes in agricultural and commercial lending. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Agribusiness from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and his MBA from Lewis University.

He is also a graduate of the Graduate School of Banking in Madison, Wis. and the Community Bankers Association of Illinois (CBAI) School for Community Bankers.

Tom has been very active in the community throughout his career. He currently serves as a board member for the Ogle County Habitat for Humanity and the Stillman Valley Economic Development Committee.

In the past, Tom served as a board member for the Ogle County Fair Association and the Oregon Chamber of Commerce.

He also has served as chairperson for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and was a member of the capital

Kathleen M. Yocum Vice President Retail Banking Kathy brings more than 35 years of banking experience to her role as Vice President Retail Banking in our Rochelle Office. She has been with Stillman Bank since it acquired the former United Bank of Rochelle in 1987.

She earned her Associates Degree in Business Management from Sauk Valley Community College. Kathy is responsible for supporting and helping customers access a variety of bank products and services.

Kathy also assists with general operational and teller matters in our Rochelle office, and often delivers technical training to employees bank-wide.

As a long-time resident of the area, Kathy is very involved in the community. Ben has taught several classes at local schools and senior centers about computer literacy and cyber security.

Ben has also served as the Deacon over IT at Harvest Bible Chapel of Rockford.

The Highland Community College Forensics Speech & Debate Team placed third in the regional competition from March 23-24 at Prairie State College in Chicago Heights.

This was their final preliminary tournament before Nationals on April 5 in Reno, Nevada.

Of the 12 schools in attendance, Highland earned a silver trophy in both individual events and overall team sweepstakes.

The regional tournament is the last stop before traveling for the end-of-the-year national tournament.

Coaches from across the region often provide the competing students with quality feedback on judges’ critiques to help prepare students for the competition.

“We really like to make sure we bring our ‘A Game’ to Regionals,” explained Brit Williams, a coach. “This is how our students receive the best quality critiques, so we can use all the suggestions other coaches and judges made and incorporate that feedback into their final performances.”

When asked about their favorite moments of this tournament, team captain and sophomore Alec Aurand stated, “It was awesome to see all my teammates break their events into

NIAS offers bird walk, festival at preserves

The Northwest Illinois Audubon Society will hold a spring migration bird walk on Thursday, May 9 at 8 a.m. at the Elkhorn Creek Biodiversity Preserve, three miles southwest of Forreston on southeast corner of West Grove and Freeport Roads.

Silver Creek Biodiversity Preserve will host a bird festival on Saturday, May 11 to explore the preserve and observe the many migrating and resident birds found there.

An experienced butterfly and hummingbird gardener who has hosted a rare Anna’s hummingbird, she is now focusing her efforts on the many native bees and beneficial insects that increasingly visit her small, suburban yard.

Lorraine Hiscox died on Wednesday, April 10, 2019, at Pinecrest Community in Mt. Morris.

Lorraine was born in Shannon, but attended Oregon High School where she met her husband Earle. in 1969, she and her husband and children moved to Arizona.

She loved sewing, playing bridge, and painting.

Mom and several people from Oregon had worked on restoring the Oregon train depot.

They all took great pride in their work and thoroughly enjoyed their experience.

4X200 relay sets a new meet record, but RC wins the meet

“Everyone knows Morrison is legit with the super sophs from last year,” RC coach Randy Moore said.

“It was our first time running the 4 x 8 since Top Times. It would have been nice to have Riley closer on the last leg, but Morrison is awesome.

They’ll probably get the state record (7:53) and I’d like to think we can get that time in 2A.” In the 400, Anderson had his sights set on the meet record of 49.07 and came close at 49.36. As a junior, he’ll have another shot at it next year.

“If I was going to build a track program, Anderson is the type of (body) frame I’d use,” said Oregon coach Jim Spratt, whose 2005 runner Martin McCormick has the 400 record.

Breaking out the yellow Marco uniforms for the meet, Forreston-Po-

lo hung with RC for most of the meet, but did not have the depth or distance running to contend. It was Evan Kelsey, Jordan Neuschwander, Dom Christensen and Brady Webb on the record-setting 4 x 200 relay with a time good enough for a state medal. F-P was also second in the 4 x 100 relay to RC, 43.5643.76, with Cailean Davids running instead of Webb.

“We can’t compete against a Rockford school with that many good athletes and someone like a Riley Wells,” F-P coach Bob Wagner said.

“I was very happy with our handoffs in the relays today. That was the key for us and something we’ve been working so hard at.”

Webb won the 100 at 11.56 and was second in the long jump (21-3) and 200 (23.10) for 26 points on his own.

Jace Coffey rebounded from a slow

start in the discus to take first at 160-5.

“It wasn’t my best day long jumping. Some days you’re on and some days you’re off,” Webb said. “I look forward to these big meets and I will learn from it. It will help me as the season winds down.”

Wells came into the 800 as the record holder at 1:55.19. To the surprise of the fans at Landers-Loomis Field, it was Spencer Mauch of Newman taking a 30-meter lead on Wells and the rest of he field.

Demonstrating his widely acclaimed finishing kick, Wells sprinted to the finish line first at a 2:03.05, as it was became evident he was taking it easy to save himself for the 1,600 relay.

There were a couple subplots in place at the Art Carlson Hawk Classic on April 26.

One was Morrison’s middle-distance relays going up against Rockford Christian and star runner Riley Wells and the other Forreston-Polo battling RC for the team title.

Forreston-Polo claimed a meet record with a 1:31.17 in the 4 x 200 relay, but could not surpass Rockford Christian’s overall strength, finishing second, 136-108 in the 22-team event.

Morrison, which hadn’t been to the meet for over a decade, made a strong statement as a 1A state trophy contender with dominating wins over RC in the 4 x 800 relay and 4 x 400 relay. Keegan Anderson anchored Morrison to wins in both races and also won the 400 meters to be named meet MVP. The Mustangs, who won the 2018 1A title in the 4 x 800 with four sophomores running 8:00, gave early notice to last year’s 1A state team runner-up with a decisive win in the event, “The difference was Koby Brackemeyer on the third leg,” Morrison coach Tim Duncan said. “We switched order. Usually, Koby is last and Keegan is third. In these (windy) conditions, I didn’t think we’d be this fast. We’re way ahead of our times from last year.”

By the time Anderson got the baton, he had a 40-meter lead on Wells, who won the prestigious Palatine Distance Night 800 meters last week. Wells, who would come back from a similar deficit to beat Spencer Mauch in the open 800 later in the meet, went out after Anderson, but finished five second behind at 8:04 to 8:09.

“If they were head-to-head, it would be a heck of a race between those two,” Duncan said. “I got to give Riley his accolades. He’s the one who’s run a 1:52.”

Coffey leaving his mark as thrower for track team

BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@saukvalley.com The first thing you notice about Forreston-Polo boys track & field team thrower Jace Coffey is his size – or rather, the lack of it.

A Polo junior, he stands 5-foot-10 and weighs 195 pounds. That relatively small stature was evident at the 2018 IHSA Boys State Track & Field Meet in Charleston, where Coffey had qualified for the discus.

Lee Bush, a former coach of Coffey’s, was in attendance and snapped a picture of a line of weightmen.

“I was the smallest one there by probably 4 inches,” Coffey said. “It was kind of funny to look at. It looked like I was in the land of the giants. There was little ol’ me there, standing next to these big guys.”

Despite his lack of size, Coffey has been coming up big in his specialty – the discus.

“The past 2 weeks, I’ve really been starting to feel good about myself,” Coffey said. “I was throwing consistent 150s. I was ready for a breakout throw, but I just didn’t know when it was going to happen.”

As it turned out, that breakout came on Monday, April 15, in a seven-team meet hosted by the Cardinals.

Newman did have a pair of first places by Shay Hafner in the 3,200 (10:15) and Connor McBride in the 200 (23.05).

“This meet has really gotten better,” Accardi said. “We tell our guys if they can place in the top 10 here, they’re doing okay. You won’t find a better 1A meet around.”

Besides Wells, the other individual who has the best mark among all three classes is Kyle Kruthoff of Erie-Prophetstown. Unfortunately, the 16-4 pole vaulter injured his foot landing on the pit in practice and had to miss the meet. He is expected to return to action next week.

Oregon’s Jake Mennen won the event on misses with a 13-6, as he broke in a pair of new poles.

“Right away I’m thinking, ‘This could be my day,’” Coffey said.

His first throw was no prize. He

estimated it to be around 160 feet, but was at least 20 feet to the right of the boundary line.

The next throw, however, was something to behold.

“I threw it, but honestly, I didn’t think much of it,” Coffey said. “Then I started hearing people cheering.

I started looking for it, and it was still in the air. It landed finally, and I was like, ‘Ooh, that’s a good one.’ I started jumping around. I was pretty happy.”

The tape measure that is usually used to measure discus throws at Forreston High School goes up to 165 feet. The discus landed beyond that.

A second tape measure was soon rounded up. This one, a 200-footer, belonged to teammate Ethan Phillips, a fellow thrower for the Cardinals. He and Coffey sometimes train on their own and use the longer tape measure to check their throws.

For this one, every precaution was taken.

“It was super windy, so we had four people holding the tape measure to make sure it was still in a straight line,” Coffey said.

Finally, the word came. The throw measured 172 feet, 3 inches. It was a personal best by 16½ feet. It was also a new Polo High School record, eclipsing the 161-3 thrown by Jono Gorzny in 1995.

“Everybody was coming up, shoulder bumping me, everybody was cheering,” Coffey said. “It was like going to the carnival for the first time. It was the best feeling ever.”

The real highlight for Oregon was Bobby Youngren setting a personal best in the discus, throwing 148-6, to place third. State qualifying is 140-8.

“He was due for a throw like that,” Oregon throwing coach Doug Engel said.

Oregon was 11th with 27 points.

The only other places for the Hawks were fifth by Calvin Sullivan in the 200 and Austin Ebert sixth in the 110 hurdles.

For F-P, Kelsey was fourth in the 100 and sixth in the 200. Cayden Shelton was impressive in running 2:04 in the 800 for fourth, beating bigger names Mauch and Brackemeyer. Davids took fourth in the 400 and Bennett Soltow fifth in the 300 hurdles.

In the field events, Garett Badertscher was fourth in the shot put (48-3) and Coffey sixth. Ethan Phillips took fourths in the long (20-6) and triple jumps (41-6). Coffey is quick to credit assistant coach Steve Christensen with his discus prowess.

Christensen works with the Cardinals’ throwers and has just the right touch, according to Coffey.

“He tells us everything we’re doing wrong, everything we’re doing right, and he can break it down so perfectly,” Coffey said. “He is so good at adjusting our form to how we like to throw. I don’t even know what I’m doing sometimes. I just get in there and think, ‘OK, let’s try to throw it far and hope I’m doing it right.’ Coach makes sure I’m doing it right.”

Coffey placed eighth at state in the discus as a sophomore with a throw of 150-7. He entered the competition seeded 17th with a sectional distance of 143-5.

The Forreston H.S. record in the discus is 179-6, set by Aaron Ruter in 2004.

“It would be nice to get one out there to beat that record too,” Coffey said. “The end-of-the-year goal is to take first or second at state.”

Quality competition at Hawk Classic track meet A

s Oregon AD Mike Lawton said, “The road to Charleston runs through Landers-Loomis Field”.

That was in reference to high quality of track and field on display last Friday at the 43rd Annual Art Carlson Hawk Classic.

As has been the case for decades, Oregon remains the premier location for small-school track in northern Illinois. The April 27 meet was evidence of that with several topflight performances.

Rockford Christian, Morrison and Forreston-Polo stood out and each will be a major factor at the IHSA state meet in Charleston.

The only thing missing was 16-feet4 Erie-Prophetstown pole vaulter, Kyle Kruthoff, who sat out due to a slight injury.

Defending 1A champ Colfax-Ridgeview is the prohibitive favorite downstate, but Morrison could win 3-4 events and contend for a runner-up team finish.

Rockford Christian is back up in 2A and will still make its presence felt. Morrison probably benefits the most from RC going up a class, as its strengths are RC’s strengths.

COMMENTARY Andy Colbert week’s sectional at Oregon is shaping up to be a real dogfight between the two schools.

I finally got out to see an Oregon softball game and it was as expected – a group of freshmen and sophomores disguised as varsity players.

Give them credit for not backing down from the challenge of facing older kids.

It will be interesting to see where this group is in a couple years and if the numbers in the program rise.

Three girls spring sports for a school of less than 400 can be a daunting task.

In looking at the Illinois Coaches Association state rankings for 2A softball, there is only one school (Aurora Central Catholic) north of I-80 listed in the top 30 teams.

That’s a glaring commentary on a lack of respect for softball in this region.

It’s a whole different story in 1A with Eastland, Orangeville, Dakota and Amboy among the top 20 and Durand and Pearl City honorable mention.

Geographically, Forreston and Polo couldn’t have asked for a better sub-sectional to be a part of. They are opposite a sub-sectional of Eastland, Orangeville, Dakota Durand and Pearl City.

Forreston has not won a regional since 2011 and since that time, there had been a different head coach every year until now, with Kim Snider in her second year. It would be an upset if prohibitive favorite Forreston does not win.

I’m writing this before seeds come out and the biggest question is which team deserves the No. 2 spot behind Forreston.

Alden-Hebron, Kirkland and South Beloit are around .500, but none of them play the schedule that Polo does. Even though the Marcos’ record isn’t close to those three teams, they are better and should be No. 2.

They’ve lost to many a good team, but gave them a game. Ideally, they would be in regional apart from Forreston.

Forreston gets a severe test in the week before the regional with Dixon, Durand and Orangeville on the docket. They will also be hosting a regional on their new field.

The next couple items are from a backlog of stuff in the hopper: Local guy Phil Bratta of Stillman

Valley was named for coach of the year by the Illinois Chess Coaches Association.

The unsung Bratta has been coaching chess at Stillman since 1980 and has helped keep a conference in this part of the state together for the very few schools that play chess. Locally, Byron and Stillman are the only ones with teams.

Under Bratta, Stillman Valley has brought home three state trophies and finished top 10 in the state nine times.

Organized high school chess meets have been going in Illinois since the 1960s, but it wasn’t until 1975 that the IHSA began conducting a state tournament. As expected, large affluent Chicago schools have dominated it.

In the ‘Did You Know’ category, there was a 6-man football conference call the Rainbow consisting of Ashton, Byron, Leaf River, Pecatonica, Stillman Valley, Winnebago, Elburn, Genoa and Kirkland back around 1950.

A few years earlier, Caledonia, Cherry Valley, Compton, Fairdale, Kings, Kishwaukee, Lee, Poplar Grove, Seward and West Brooklyn formed the Meridian conference for basketball.

In Illinois, 1,184 high schools have closed, including most of the above.

The state finished building the prison in 2001, but it sat empty for more than a decade because Illinois didn’t budget enough money to open

it. In 2012, it was announced that the Bureau of Prisons would buy the facility for $165 million.

The prison is meant to alleviate overcrowding in the federal system and promote economic growth in the region.

Looking for a new career?

Thomson federal prison in Carroll County has more than 100 openings for correctional officers, and to fill them, officials are offering a sign-on incentive: New officers who enter service by Sept. 30 and serve satisfactorily for a year will get a $4,000+ bonus.

The bonus is 10% of their salary, which starts at $41,868 a year, public information officer Nicole McDowell said in a news release Monday.

The prison at 1100 One Mile Road has about 400 inmates now – 90 in its minimum security camp – and 217 employees. The goal is to have 800-900 inmates and 500 employees by the end of the year. When fully activated, it will house around 1,500 inmates.

In October, the prison held a job fair at Sauk Valley Community College and at the time, officials said they planned to fill up to 300 slots, with 300 more to be filled by the end of this year. This round of hiring is part of that effort.

Master Gardeners busy sharing their knowledge Ogle County Master Gardeners have been “Helping Others Learn to Grow� throughout the county.

After their annual garden workshop, “Ready, Set, Grow�, Master Gardeners have shared knowledge with the Polo Garden Club, offered a succulent workshop in Rochelle, set-up a Seed Library at the Leaf River Library, visited the Children’s Center AM & PM classes in Oregon and taught information on butterflies.

In Byron, Master Gardeners shared their knowledge of worms with the Boy Scouts. In addition, Master Gardeners have spent time with the residents of Pinecrest, Oregon Living and Rehab and the Village of Progress.

Currently, six Master Gardener trainees are learning a wealth of knowledge on Thursdays and will be ready to start working towards their volunteer goals starting in May. The Master Gardeners have been busy with maintaining some of the Ogle County Fairground gardens. They are working there on Tuesday mornings, please feel open to joining them they love to share their knowledge.

ACCIDENT UPDATE

TRIBUNE NEWS SERVICE The truck driver charged in a crash that killed an Illinois State Trooper last month told authorities that he fell asleep at the wheel earlier that day and again just before the collision, an investigator testified in court April 25.

An Illinois State Police sergeant testified that Craig Dittmar, 55, told investigators that he started driving at 5:30 a.m. that day and that he had also pulled off the road to take a nap at some point before the crash that killed Trooper Brooke Jones-Story.

Dittmar is charged with reckless homicide and fatigued driving in connection with the crash. He has pleaded not guilty.

“He doesn’t remember seeing any police vehicles or any other vehicles prior to the crash,” Illinois State Police Sgt. Charles Davidson testified at a preliminary hearing in Stephenson County Circuit Court. “He says he wakes up, he doesn’t know what happened.”

Dittmar’s next hearing is scheduled for July 11, court records show.

The closure is expected to remain in place until Aug. 15. The contractor, Sjostrom & Sons, Rockford, is also continuing work on the crossovers on I-39.

Once complete, north and southbound traffic will be shifted head to head on the southbound lanes.

Motorists can expect major delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Use alternate routes when possible to avoid the work area.

tion to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices, and be alert for workers and equipment.

April 24 Jacob Turner, 40, of Dixon, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for petition to revoke for domestic battery. He posted the $10,000 (10%) bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in court on May 17.

At 7:56 p.m., deputies responded to a one vehicle roll-over accident. A car driven by Magdalena De La CruzHerrera, 36, of Kingston, was eastbound on Illinois 38 when she lost control as she attempted to pass other vehicles.

The car entered the north ditch and rolled several times.

De La Cruz-Herrera was transported to Rochelle Community Hospital by Rochelle ambulance for minor injuries.

She received citations for no insurance and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Deputies were assisted at the scene

by AC Towing and Ogle-Lee and Rochelle Fire Departments. The accident remains under investigation.

Jared S. Mon, 18, of Dixon, was arrested for no valid driver’s license, unlawful consumption of alcohol by a minor, and zero tolerance after a traffic stop at 11:35 p.m. in the 4,000 block of South Illinois 26.

A passenger in the vehicle, Devin Fry, 19, of Dixon, was arrested for consumption of alcohol as a minor and released on an I-bond.

April 25 Samantha Brown, 30, of Polo, was arrested for driving while license suspended after the vehicle she was driving was involved in a roll-over crash at 12:10 a.m. in the 14,500 block of West Milledgeville Road.

Brown was also cited for leaving the scene of a property damage accident and improper lane usage.

She refused medical attention and was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond.

Alexandra Schaefer , 27, of Rochelle, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for motion to increase bond. Schaefer was held on the Ogle County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 (10%) pending a court appearance.

April 28 Deputies along with Dixon Rural Fire Department and EMS responded to a motorcycle crash with injuries at 4:40 p.m. in the 800 block of West Flagg Road.

Andrew McCray, 66, of Chana, and Michael McCray, 27, of Ashton, were traveling eastbound on West Flagg Road operating separate motorcycles when Andrew lost control and crashed in the south ditch.

Andrew suffered multiple injuries due to the crash and was transported to KSB Hospital, Dixon.

He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and received addition citations for improper lane

usage, failure to reduce speed and driving on the shoulder.

Due to his injuries he was issued an I-bond with a future court date.

Michael was also charged with DUI and transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

April 29 Joseph Bull, 59, of Rock Falls, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He was held in the Ogle County Jail on a $636 (full cash) bond pending a court appearance.

The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity.

Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population.

Source of Water: OREGONTo determine Oregon's susceptibility to groundwater contamination, information obtained during a Well Site Survey performed by the Illinois Rural Water Association on October 20, 1998 was reviewed. Based on this information, several potential sources of contamination were identified within proximity of this water supply's wells. The Illinois EPA does not consider the city's source water susceptible to contamination. This determination is based on a number of criteria including: monitoring conducted at the wells; monitoring conducted at the entry point to the distribution system; and the available hydrogeologic data on the wells. In anticipation of the U.S. EPA's proposed Ground Water Rule, the Illinois EPA has determined that the water supply is not vulnerable to viral contamination. This determination is based upon the completed evaluation of the following criteria during the Vulnerability Waiver Process: the community's wells are properly constructed with sound integrity and proper site conditions; a hydrogeologic barrier exists that should prevent pathogen movement; all potential routes and sanitary defects have been mitigated such that the source water is adequately protected; monitoring data did not indicate a history of disease outbreak; and a sanitary survey of the water supply did not indicate a viral contamination threat. Because the community's wells are constructed in a confined aquifer, which should minimize the movement of pathogens into the wells, well hydraulics were not considered to be a significant factor in the vulnerability determination. Hence, well hydraulics were not evaluated for this groundwater supply.

The level of a drinking water disinfectant below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MRDLGs do not reflect the benefits of the use of disinfectants to control microbial contaminants.
