BY EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@oglecountynews.com The Ogle County 4-H Penny Carnival was the way to try and beat the winter doldrums and have some family fun at the “Greatest Show on Earth”, or at least in Oregon on March 2.

The Saturday night event featured games created by 4-H Club members like “Spin-A-Toy,” “Rings of Fire,” “Plinko” and “Skeeball”.

Kids could play the games for 25 cents a try or 50 games for $10. Prizes were awarded to players whether they won or lost.

The 2019 game theme was “4-H…The Greatest Show on Earth!”

The Pine Creek Valley 4-H Club made two games for their booths, Skeeball and Plinko.

“They made them in a garage during a snowstorm,” said Jody Merdian, one of the club’s leaders.

Judges selected two 4-H clubs to be awarded special cash prizes for games that were the “Most Entertaining” and “Most Creative.”

4-H is the youth development program of University of Illinois Extension.

PCHS to perform “Alice in Wonderland” The year’s PCHS all school spring play “Alice in Wonderland” will be performed on Friday. March 8 and Saturday, March 9 at 7 p.m. in the high school gum.

Based on the beloved characters in the book, the play begins as Alice, chasing the White Rabbit, tumbles down the rabbit hole into Wonderland.

She meets all its famous residents: the King of Hearts, Red Queen, White Queen, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Caterpillar, the Gryphon, Mock Turtle, the Dormouse, Mad Hatter, and March

Hare, the Frog Footman, the Duchess, and, of course, the White Rabbit.

The cast of 35 along with a large back stage crew features a cross-section of the PCHS student body.

Seniors Hayden Bittinger, Kyle Brown, Lexi Cox, Shannon Engelhardt, Tabitha Falk, Dustin Goodman, Jakob Kindle, Summer Linboom, Haley Melton, and Ally Rhodes will be performing in their last show at PCHS. Senior backstage crew Emily Boelens, Aric McConnell, Patricia Plachno, and James Watson will also be working their

last show.

Many underclassmen are also in the cast and crew.

In preparation for their roles the students are working very hard to bring the classic characters to life.

Ticket prices are as follows: adults, $5; students (K-12) and senior citizens (65 and older), $3.

All children must be escorted by an adult.

He and vendor Jim Klenke, of

Janesville, Wisconsin, compared notes on their experiences while learning to drive tractors as youngsters growing up on the farm.

Klenke said he was at the show for the first time.

“It’s going good, thanks to good customers like him,” he said smiling.

Seven-year-old Leo Neuner, of Milledgeville, saw a great many things he liked, but was especially taken with a small black motorcycle offered by Oregon vendor Bob Massey.

“Remember, that’s a collectible, not something to play with,” cautioned his father Bill.

Leo assured him that his plan would be to keep the motorcycle in a safe place.

Massey offered to reduce the price on a nearby miniature Corvette, and Leo appeared tempted but the motorcycle was the clear favorite.

Persistence finally paid off as Massey smiled and cut the price on the motorcycle by 75 percent.

“I’d like you to have that,” he told the youngster.

Young Jared Prins, of Morrison, had his hands full Saturday at the 34th annual Polo Farm Toy Show.

The youngster had a toy in each hand, ready to check out, as his parents and older sister browsed the booths filling the Polo Community High School gym.

Jared’s mother Bobbie Jo said they were attending the show, which is sponsored by the Polo Lions Club, for the first time.

She said her children had wasted no time in finding treasures.

And nodding toward her husband Adam, “He’s finding lots of goodies,” she said with a grin.

With temperatures just above freezing and a few peaks of sunshine, the event drew nearly 400 people, providing a welcome respite from a long winter.

A steady stream of shoppers came through the doors to check out the stacks of farm toys, miniature vintage vehicles, and other collectibles, and then sit down to a barbecued pork sandwich served by the Polo

Boosters in the cafeteria.

New jail expected to cost less than estimated

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com The cost for building the new Ogle County Jail may be less than the $25.5 million budgeted for it last fall.

Based on the bids that have come in so far, at a special meeting Feb. 26 the county board amended the project budget to $24 million.

The board accepted 18 base bids that totaled $17.9 million plus alternate bids for another $264,900.

More than 70 companies submitted bids on the 18 bid packages.

Bids for the steel needed for the 41,700 square-foot building were scheduled to be opened on March 7 which will add an estimated $800,000 to the project.

Board chairman Kim Gouker recommended the $24 million budget to cover changes required by the Illinois Department of Corrections and any unexpected costs that may arise.

Jeremy Roling, from Gilbane Building Company, told the board he expects to begin construction in just over a month.

“We’re looking to break ground in

early April,” he said. “We’ll schedule a ground-breaking around April 15th.”

The construction is expected to take 20 months.

Gilbane was hired a year ago for the design and construction of the building. They have been working since then with officials from Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum, Inc., the Chicago architectural and planning firm that drew up the plans for the new jail.

He said Gilbane is on board with the county board’s Feb. 19 decision to lease the former package liquor store at 513 W. Washington as a construction office.

The county will pay owner Riley Jacobson $1,200 a month for the 1,700 square foot space and its 10 parking spaces, just across the street from the building site.

Gouker said the cost will be an estimated $5,000 less than renting trailers for the same purpose.

The new jail will be located in the 100 block of South Sixth Street and will face Washington Street.

POLO POLICE Polo Police Chief Kurt Cavanaugh reported the following information on March 4.

Feb. 26 Rebecca A. Hanson, 41, Polo, was arrested at 12:52 a.m. for driving under the influence of alcohol. She was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Nathan A. Wiegmann, 38, Polo, was arrested at 8:07 p.m. for driving under the influence of alcohol, no driver or passenger seat belts, and improper left turn. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Daphne Kim Bone, 34, Polo, was arrested at 8:07 p.m. on an outstanding LaSalle County warrant. She was transported to the Ogle County jail.

Actors of the Week In honor of show week, Mrs. Wiegmann was asked to select an actor to be featured, but how could she just pick one?

This edition of the Marcolite features four talented actors involved in Alice in Wonderland (which you should totally come see this Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9, both at 7 p.m. in the PCHS gym).

Alyssa Wakenight: How are you feeling about the play this weekend?

Mrs. Wiegmann: I am excited for the play this weekend. We have certainly

“I like the creativity and the creative aspect, like taking the written word and turning it into the 3D aspect .“ She added, “I am so proud of the high school kids, and regardless of the bad winter we’ve had,

This is a play with many larger-thanlife characters so there are lots of personalities on stage.

It’s colorful, fun, and entertaining. Just the thing when we are all looking for the pop of spring. It will lift your spirits and put a smile on your face!

Devin Rucker: Devin is coming on strong as a character actor. Every practice I see growth in his acting and characterization.

He is a real asset to the PCHS stage.

His place on the PCHS stage is bringing a fun interpretation of the Frog Footman.

Devin has the ability to make his characters delightful and fun. This is also Devin’s first performance with PCHS.

Alyssa Wakenight: Alyssa is a commanding presence on the stage. She is well prepared and always thinking about her character and how she will interact with other actors.

She is always cheerful, hard working, and understands the importance of focus and commitment.

Alyssa plays the Mad Hatter, where she gets to let her zany crazy out.

Alyssa’s characters always have a little something extra that makes it fun to watch her onstage.

Sadie Baumann: Sadie brings a wealth of experience to the PCHS stage.

Her insights, enthusiasm, and onstage presence and an inspiration for all the actors.

She plays Tweedledum and is paired with her twin (Haley Melton) Tweedledee.

The two actors have worked hard

coming up with all kinds of silly antics for their characters. Sadie has an infectious onstage presence as she brings her character to life.

Shannon Engelhardt: Shannon works hard at her acting. She strives to find just the right little things that make her character tick.

This trait has been true throughout her acting career here at PCHS. Shannon is open to trying on different interpretations of her character.

She is concerned with every little detail from how to say a line, to her costume, to the way to style her hair.

Shannon is playing the Red Queen who is constantly threatening to chop off everyone’s head.

She had a huge break through this week that made all of us cringe (in a good way). She’s getting really scary!

Alice in Wonderland is a play adapted by Charlotte Chorpenning, based on Lewis Carroll’s original version.

When asked, the director said this show is ”a gallows along the traditional fallows more of Alice through the looking glass, but you still meet all your favorite characters from Alice in Wonderland.”

This production is quite different from the show that was done at PCHS in 2006.

When asked what she is most looking forward to about this show, Mrs. Wiegmann said “I love working with the actors and watching the characters grow as the cast learns the script -- and watching it all unfold.”

What is Mrs. Wiegmann’s favorite part of direct-

the dedication is outstanding -- they have a wonderful show and it’s definitely worth coming to see.

“Of all the stories, the traditional story was my favorite story as a child, which makes this show extra special to me.

“My favorite characters came from the story of the walrus and the carpenter and all the clams and their little shoes -- there was a cleverness and I could relate to going to the beach as a little girl and picking up shells.

“This year, the school bought new curtains with the help of an anonymous donor, and they make the show that much more special. PCHS has such fine actors and they have so much fun telling the story: it’s really fun to work with these kids.

“Interesting fact about this playwright: she didn’t start writing children’s show until she was 60 years old.”

Wiegmann stated also that all proceeds from this show will go towards Kate Marschang.

Hitt came to Illinois from Maryland, a slave state Didn’t want his children influenced by slavery

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator Polo Historical Society For a number of years the month of February has always been noted as Black History Month.

Now there is some controversy.

Why should Black History only be delegated to one month?

Soon that one month of observation will probably be no more. And we will not hear the term “Black History Month.”

I am extending it into March with an article from the Mt. Morris Times written by Otto Dick.

Someone mailed me this article a couple of weeks ago since it was connected with the Hitt Family and Hitt House of Polo.

It probably was Deb Patterson

since she sends me numerous articles and I thank her.

In 1836 Samuel Hitt came to Rock River Valley and started the original Pine Creek Mill.

He had other families come with him and they became known as the “Maryland Colony.”

They left the East because Maryland was a slave state and Mr. Hitt did not want his children to be influenced by such a state.

When the family came west they were more connected to Mt. Morris.

Samuel’s son John did however build the Hitt House in Polo where his sister Susan lived and where Samuel’s wife, Barbara also lived after Samuel’s death in 1859.

The interesting part of the story from the Times was about a 10-yearold girl who traveled with them to this area.

She was from Africa and had been brought over on a slave ship.

Not much was written about her journey on the ship or whether her family was even with her.

She ended up, however, in the Samuel Hitt household when Mr. Hitt purchased her at a slave auction.

She traveled with them by prairie schooner to Mt. Morris.

She was renamed Margaret after Hitt’s daughter Margaret. She was told if she was a good girl she would always live with his daughter Margaret who was her mistress.

When Margaret Hitt married Professor Pinckney, who was the first principal of Mt. Morris Seminary, she went to live with them and took care of their children.

She never saw any of her family again although she did learn of a brother in the East.

We did not have any African Americans living in this are in those early years.

Margaret, the slave, eventually wanted to meet people of her own race and the Pinckney family took her to Galena and Galesburg.

In Galena, she met John Granger and eventually married him.

The Pinckney family gave them land on their property and built a log cabin.

For many years Margaret, John, and their nine children were the only African American family in Mt. Morris.

Eight of the children did move elsewhere but Daniel lived in Pine Creek.

On Feb. 11, 1925 Margaret died at the age of 103. She was buried in Mt. Morris Oakwood Cemetery.

Margaret was obviously very helpful to the community of Mt. Morris because her services were attended by many.

At the age of 10, when she was taken into slavery and put on a ship to cross the Atlantic Ocean, she would have been in fourth grade.

Twenty-five percent of the people placed in such a situation died before they ever reached America.

She must have been a very sturdy child especially since she lived to the age of 103.

Pastor Charlotte Hoppe led the children’s message for our young friend, JoJo, who was visiting our church with Ron and Sharon Baker.

Don and Vicki Hay provided breakfast goodies to share during the Sunday School class and Don served the treats.

This past Saturday morning, the men’s breakfast group met for a wonderful meal and fellowship.

Don Hay hosted Ron Baker, John Engel, James Hopkins, Kent Nettz, Larry Riffle, Dave Burright, and Pastor Charlotte for the morning.

This past week, Jean Cunningham was host to several generations for lunch.

Jean’s daughter, Jane Hamilton, her husband, Tom, and Jean’s grandson, Tim Cunningham, his wife, Lisa, and their young daughter, JoAnna, visited over the noon meal.

After dinner, James and Nancy Hopkins stopped to join in the visiting with the newest member of the family.

Jean was delighted to share her

news about meeting the new baby.

This coming weekend, the Polo High School students will present the play, “Alice in Wonderland.”

This will be the last play for my nephew, Hayden Bittinger, who will be graduating in a few short months.

Last week was another busy one for me. I drove home on Friday evening after working and running errands.

To my surprise, all of the ice that had built up over the past few weeks was gone from the bottom of my driveway.

I knew it had not been warm enough to melt, so I messaged my brother, Ben Bittinger. I let him know how thankful I am for the unexpected favor.

I am very grateful for the love and support of my family and friends.

Ben and his wife, Jo, are always there when I need and I hope they know I am here for their family, too.

On Saturday afternoon, I was surprised another time by a phone call from my son, Clint.

After a stressful week, it was wonderful to hear him joking and laughing on the other end of the line.

God shares His blessings with us in so many different ways.

He blesses us with wonderful family and friends that show up offering a shoulder to lean on, sharing laughter, or helping with a tough home project.

When we are in a relationship with God, it is much easier to see the many ways we are blessed.

We know He provides for us in many different ways. We already know He meets our needs, sometimes in unexpected ways.

When we take the time to look, we can see that everything good comes from Him. When we start to realize how much God loves us, we know that He knows exactly what we need when we need it.

He loves each of you and will continue to provide for you in many unique and amazing ways.

I hope to see you next week in our church in the country. Come and share the ways that God has surprised you.

A wide variety of items will be available from vendors at this event.

The toy show will feature toy tractors, farm equipment, memorabilia, and collectibles.

The event features more than 100 tables of vendors who come from all over the Midwest.

The Forreston FFA Alumni will also have special 31th anniversary Oliver 1650 front wheel assist toy tractors for sale.

The craft fair will have a large number of vendors offering crafts, food, candles, and other items.

The event supports the FHS ag program and FFA.

LR Lions to serve breakfast The Leaf River Lions will serve their next breakfast on Saturday, March 16 from 7 to 10 a.m. at the Bertolet Memorial Building, 103 W. Second St., Leaf River.

The date had to be moved from the second week of the month to the third week because of the Lions District Convention being held March 8-9.

The menu will include fresh eggs, bacon, hash browns with or without onions, and toast.

The cost for the breakfast is free for children 4 and under, $4 for children ages 5 years to 12 years, and $6 for adults “one time through.” An “all you can eat” breakfast is $8.

The April 20 breakfast will include the Easter Bunny with pancakes and waffles on the menu. Strawberries with whipped cream, blueberry or chocolate chip pancakes will be available.

KICK-OFF

The Byron Forest Preserve District’s final program of its 2019 Winter Lecture Series will be held Sunday, March 10 beginning at 2 p.m. at the Jarrett Prairie Center in Byron.

Dr. Thomas Loebel, Statewide Cultural Resources Coordinator with the Illinois State Archaeological Survey will present his research regarding Paleo-Indians in Illinois and Wisconsin.

“North American early Paleo-Indians (circa 12,000 BC) are perhaps amongst the most highly stereotyped archaeological cultures,” said Mark Herman, superintendent of recreation for the forest preserve. “They are widely viewed as nomadic hunters of elephants who did little else except produce a remarkable similar style of fluted stone spear point over a vast geographical area.

“However, hidden within the Paleo-Indian archaeological record is subtle evidence of the social and ritual life of these late ice-age hunter gathers. By examining large-scale pat-

terns of raw material use, Thomas has identified probable instances of trade, exchange, and the movement of individuals, groups, and artifacts during the Clovis period,” Herman said.

“These movements reflect both the economic and social adaptions of these groups as they dealt with adjusting to a rapidly changing environ-

His family started the scholarship in his name due to his commitment to the youth of Ogle County and the Focus House program. One LaVerne Adams Scholarship will be awarded for $500.

The Foundation for Focus House and Community Programming exists to receive and administer contributions, gifts, memorials and bequests for the exclusive purpose of enhancing programming at Focus House and offering community programs that enhance, enrich and supplement individuals involved in Court Services.

too small to be considered.

The Scholarship Committee looks forward to reading about successful youth in Ogle County.

On three evenings in mid to late March — Friday, March 15, Wednesday, March 20 and Tuesday, March 26 — at 7 p.m., the Northwest Illinois Audubon Society invites all interested persons to the Elkhorn Creek Preserve to watch and listen for American woodcocks performing their amazing courtship display.

The “Sky Dance” is part ground-strutting, part zig-zagging flight, barely visible in the early evening sky.

This visual display is accompanied by a repetitious vocal “peent” followed by twittering and chirping sounds made when the air rushes through primary flight feathers during the birds’ descent.

Because the timing of the woodcocks’ twilight display is an educated guess based on past years, participants should call the leader, Mary Blackmore at 815-938-3263, before the event to confirm that the birds are back and the weather is suitable.

The Elkhorn Creek Preserve is three miles southwest of Forreston on the southeast corner of West Grove and Freeport Roads.

The parking lot is off West Grove Road.

Ogle County’s Ag in the Classroom is offered a way to make dinner preparation simple by ordered frozen meals to help raise funds for the program.

Order 10 delicious meals that have been prepared and frozen for convenience. Each meal serves three to five people.

The meals are: Creamy Chicken and Stuffing Casserole, South-

west Chicken Burrito Bowl, Hickory Smoked BBQ Pulled Chicken, Cheesy Ham and Potato Casserole, Hickory Smoked Pulled Pork, Hickory Smoked Pork Loin, Swedish Meatballs with pasta, Tator Tot Casserole, Baked Mostaccioli, and Cheesy Beef Enchiladas.

Boyer’s main assignment was to cover Fyock.

Heller led the Warriors with 17 and the team got a big boost from sophomore Declan Schemmel with 13.

“That wasn’t a surprise,” Miller said. “He’s one of our leaders in rebounding, assists and scoring.”

Fyock would score Forreston’s final eight points of the game before fouling out with 40 seconds left and the Cardinals trailing 47-39.

He ends his career as the leader in 3 pointers in a season and a career, taking both records from his coach.

Coach Schneiderman is still the alltime leader in scoring with around 1,700 points, while Fyock finished with 1,153.

“I’m proud the effort by our whole team,” Schneiderman said.

It was Heinz sparking Forreston to an 8-6 first quarter lead on four points near the basket.

“We needed to get looks in the paint early,” Schneiderman said.

ED also made a 10-0 run the second quarter to grab a 16-8 lead, with

Schemmel leading the charge. Heller capped off the run with a 3-pointer.

But, in front of the packed house at East Dubuque, Fyock, Heinz and Ethan Greenfield combined for the next nine points and to pull Forreston within a score at half.

“Usually, our recipe for success is to hold teams into the thirties,” Miller said.

That’s exactly what the Warriors accomplished in moving onto the final to face River Ridge, a winner over Polo in the other semifinal.

Forreston finished with a 20-7 record after going 10-14 last year.

“This group of seniors had to overcome a lot to get this far,” said Schneiderman, citing the loss of Drew Crase as one example.

After the regional win over Dakota, Drew’s father joined the team in cutting down the nets.

East Dubuque went on to win the sectional with a 67-52 victory over Hanover’s River Ridge.

Three-point Showdown advancers were: Brennan Carlson, Aquin; Noah Eaton, Warren; Braedon Fyock, Forreston; and Logan Whelchel, Amboy.

Going into its 1A sectional contest with East Dubuque, Forreston had a good game plan in place and trailed only at half 19-17 against the 30-1 Warriors.

Unfortunately, a 10-point run in the third quarter was the demise of Forreston, as the No. 1 seed took a 52-39 win.

“We planned on a low possession game,” said Forreston coach Jonathan Schneiderman, in a post-game interview on Q102 FM. “The formula was good. We got through the first half, but you have to play four quarters of basketball.”

The Warriors came out of the half with a quick 3-pointer and followed up with another score. Braeden Fyock managed a basket on a oneon-one move, but Forreston went the next six possessions without scoring.

Meanwhile, ED was unstoppable in taking a 30-19 lead with two minutes left in the third quarter. A Mitchell Heinz hook shot finally stopped the run, but Forreston couldn’t getting any closer than eight points the rest of the way.

A pair of Warrior scores resulting from offensive rebounds in the stretch was particularly damaging.

“That 3-ball and two offensive putbacks were crucial in a grind-it-out games when points are at a premium,” Schneiderman said.

Going into the fourth quarter, Forreston trailed 36-23 to a team that has been ranked in the top five in the state all season. It was going to take a monumental effort to overcome that.

ED began to run clock early in the fourth quarter and Schneiderman opted to foul earlier rather than later. The strategy paid dividends, as the Warriors only made 14 of 26 second-half free throws.

“Typically, you go (foul) at three minutes. We went at six,” Schneiderman said.

Forreston would pull within 42-34 and 44-36 with three minutes left on a Fyock 3 and two free throws.

Fyock did have 21 points, but had to fight against a switching man-toman defense to get any sort of looks.

“He’s tough to keep from shooting and you’re never really comfortable with him out there,” ED coach Eric Miller said. “We were communicating on the switches.”

Assessing the expectation quotient for basketball I t’s safe to say that Polo met expectations in basketball, Forreston exceeded them and the jury is still out on Oregon.

Regional and conference champs.

Those were expected standards of Polo, which they passed with flying colors.

Since having success at the lower levels, this group of seniors had high expectations placed on them. They also appear to be the last of long line of Marco basketball prowess, dating back to 2012-13 when the current streak of 20-win seasons began.

This bears repeating – no one in the NUIC, Three Rivers, BNC or NIC-10, can make the same claim.

That’s a testament to coach Matt Messer and the personnel that have matriculated through the program during that time period.

Certainly the Marcos were capable of beating River Ridge in the sectional, but East Dubuque would have been a different story.

I felt Polo had more talent than RR, but the Wildcats were more basketball savvy. River Ridge is a school that lives and breathes the sport.

After struggling much of the year, it was good to see Justin Young have

his biggest game when it mattered the most. And as usual, star guards Braiden Soltow and Brady Webb came through for the Marcos.

The loss is primarily attributed to a pressure River Ridge defense creating turnovers, River Ridge not missing at the free-throw line and Young getting into foul trouble.

I sensed that East Dubuque was glad that River Ridge won, so they wouldn’t have to play someone as dangerous as Polo.

Forreston gave East Dubuque all they could handle until the Warriors’ experience and team strengths took over. With Braeden Fyock the only returnee with much playing time behind him, getting to a sectional shows how much everyone on this team grew.

One difference-maker was the presence of Mitchell Heinz in the post and his ability as a scoring threat and defender. And, sophomore

games in crunch time.

Starting next year, the post season will be more difficult for 2A schools like Oregon. The cut-off between 2A and 3A goes up from 546 to 697, meaning powerhouses like Rock Falls (646 enrollment) will be dropping down a class.

But, it will be a positive for other BNC schools like Stillman Valley, G-K and Mendota, that never had a chance in 3A. Recently, I had a discussion with a very knowledgeable parent of a local player. He felt it was important for players to stay close to the game on a year-round basis, so as to not lose skill levels.

I disagreed, stating that they will become better players by going out for track in the spring and staying out of the gyms. That is where they will be tested mentally and physically and become a more competitive athlete.

The same principle applies to be football players becoming mentally tougher from wrestling.

Besides, with kids playing more basketball than ever before in summer leagues and the like, why are fundamentals worse they’ve ever been?

Ethan Greenfield showed shades of a similar sophomore guard from a couple years ago named Fyock.

My lasting memory will be of the 4-overtime win over Dakota at the regional final.

It was also named by one Rockford TV station as the area game of the year.

Of all the games I saw this year, Fyock would rank as the second-best player behind Cade Nailor of Rock Falls.

In terms of quality teams, the NUIC may have had its best season ever. With most teams suffering huge graduations losses, the league will be down next year.

Oregon (14-18) had two quality wins against Genoa-Kingston and Rochelle, both 3A teams that did well in the post season. They also lost to mediocre 1A opponents South Beloit and Warren.

They return the bulk of their team, including franchise player Trey Woolsey. The potential is there to be good, much like the unit from 2015-16.

However, Oregon needs to develop a work ethic and discipline. Unless that happens, the necessary mental toughness won’t be in place to win

Teams “Ogle County First Responders” and the “Iced Bears” joined forces to raise more than $4,000 for the Illinois Special Olympics during the 2019 Polar Plunge donation drive.

The Rockford area Polar Plunge was held at Olson Lake in Loves Park on March 2.

Temperatures dipped below 24° as 426 total participants plunged into the icy lake.

The Rockford event raised approximately $117,000 to support Special Olympics programing and events.

Team members included employees from Oregon Police Department, Ogle County Probation, Ogle County Sheriff’s Department, Sterling Public Schools, Ogle County Educational Cooperative, and citizens from Ogle County.

OBITUARIES DAVID L. MEIGHAN David L. Meighan, 69, of Leaf River, gently died on Saturday, Feb. 23 at home surrounded by his family.

He was born in Freeport on July 24, 1949 to Alfred and Dorothy (Boelk) Meighan.

As the youngest of seven children, he was blessed to have a childhood of love and laughter.

He attended Lena schools,and later the School of Hard Knocks.

He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, which forever changed the course of his life.

David worked for Cheeseman Construction and Sinclair Builders for many years, with a serious work ethic.

He later invested in rental properties, working side by side with his wife.

He kept his circle small,and loved deeply.

A man of unwavering faith, he faced every challenge with fortitude, grace and optimism.

He was an unselfish man, with decisions always based on what was best for everyone.

David talked the least, but said the most. A patriarch lost that will forever

be remembered and celebrated.

David loved his family tremendously, and his family loved and admired him.

He kept everyone in line with discipline, laughter, love, and support.

Survivors include his wife, Christie (Rowland); son, Bradlee (Lynn); daughters, Ashlee (Blake) Hamilton and Erika (Andy) Laurent. He was beloved Papa to grandchildren Jude David and Josephine Meighan, Elliott Hamilton, and Braeden and Keaton Laurent. His siblings include Joyce Edler, Don (Ellie) Meighan, Charles (Maria) Meighan, Betty Baum, and Nancy Althiser. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins, three sisters-in-law, and a brother-in-law.

He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Arlene Lawson; brothers-in-law, Jim Edler, Dick Lawson, Lee Baum; and a special cousin, Diane Lutz.

A celebration of life service was held on March 2 at 11 a.m. at Schwarz Park Boulevard Chapel, 608 S. Park Blvd., Freeport.

A memorial has been established.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following arrests.

Feb. 25 Deputies along with Lynn Scott Rock EMS responded at 5:30 p.m. to the 17,000 block of East Big Mound Road for the report of a single vehicle crash where the occupant was unresponsive but breathing.

David A. Miller, 45, of Lindenwood, was arrested for aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol and

aggravated driving while license revoked.

He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

He was also cited for improper lane usage, driving on the shoulder, illegal transportation of alcohol, and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

PATRICIA K. TYNE O’DONNELL Patricia K. Tyne O’Donnell, 61, of Naperville, died on Sunday, March 3, 2019, at Serenity Home in Oregon.

She was born on Dec. 14, 1957 in Dixon, the daughter of Edward and Agatha (Tosney) Tyne.

She was a member of the St. Raphael Catholic Church in Naperville.

She is survived by her son, Daniel O’Donnell, of Brooklyn, New York; her sister, Margaret A. Tyne of Polo; brother, Edward (Kay) Tyne Jr., of Polo; nieces and nephews, Courtney (Kevin West) Tyne, of Washington D.C.; Brian (Jaclyn)

ROGENE L. POPPEN Rogene L. Poppen, 92, of Forreston, died on Monday, March 4, 2019 at Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, Mt. Morris.

Rogene was born on April 17, 1926 in Adeline, the daughter of Ernest and Rose (Horst) Hartje.

She graduated from Forreston High School in the Class of 1944, and she received a bachelor’s degree in organ and piano from Carthage College in 1948.

Rogene married Alfred V. Poppen on Sept. 29, 1951 in Forreston. He preceded her in death on Nov. 26, 1988.

She was a piano teacher and she was the St. James Lutheran Church organist and choir director, retiring in 2015.

She was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church, Forreston.

Rogene is survived by children, Ruth Ann (Kirstie Felland) Poppen, of Wheeling, and Douglas (Leslie) Poppen, of West Union, Iowa; grandchildren, Marcie (Loran Marceau) Poppen, Melissa

Tyne, of Glendale, Colorado; Brandi (Matthew Kudla) Tyne, of Columbus, Indiana; and three great-nephews, Isaac West, Jonah West, and Louis Kudla.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 8 at 12 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home in Dixon.

Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Dixon.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 11 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

A memorial has been established to Serenity Hospice Home in Oregon.

Christopher Shank, 52, of Winnebago, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He posted the $175 full cash bond and was released with no further court date.

Broc Krigbaum, 22, of Leaf River, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies were dispatched at 11:15 p.m. to a one-vehicle crash in the 8,800 block of North Main Street in Adeline.

Krigbaum had driven his vehicle into the ditch. He was transported to the

Eubanks posted $3,000 (10%) bond and is scheduled to appear in court on March 11.

Residents warned about burglar

Illinois State Police District 1 Commander Captain Matthew Hodgdon has announced February enforcement figures and activity.

State troopers issued 254 citations, 368 written warnings, and made 11 criminal arrests during the month of February.

Speeding accounted for 177 citations, seven citations were issued for occupant restraint violations and eight citations were issued for distracted driving violations.

Troopers investigated 39 traffic crashes, assisted 173 motorists, and conducted 148 commercial vehicle inspections, 16 of which were placed out-of-service for safety reasons.

Four arrests were made for driving under the influence of alcohol.

District 1, which encompasses Carroll, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside counties, had no traffic crash fatalities in February.

A suspect vehicle has been described as a black, older model Dodge pick-up with the word “Dodge” in red lettering on the tailgate.

“As always, we urge everyone to lock their doors and report any suspicious activity,” the Facebook post read. “Be aware of anyone coming to your residence asking for directions, claiming to be out of gas, etc.”

Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle warned county residents about a burglar in a Facebook post last weekend.

The department received reports of two daytime residential burglaries that took place in rural Stillman Valley on March 2 and 3.

The suspect is described as a white male, 19 to 23 years of age, clean cut, between 5’8-5’10 in height with a slender build.

Feb. 25 At 8:44 a.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of Fourth and Washington streets involving a 2013 Buick driven by Debra S. Julian, 63, of Oregon, and a 2013 Ford driven by Ronald W. Watts, 77, of Oregon. No citations were issued.

Todd M. Decker, 53, of Rockford, was issued citations at 5:57 p.m. for improper overtaking on the right and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. These violations occurred at the intersection of Fourth and Washington streets.

Feb. 26 Jose C. Martinez, 82, of DeKalb, was issued a citation at 12:14 p.m. for no valid driver’s license. This violation occurred in the 300 block of E. Washington Street.

Rico Richards, 39, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was issued citations at 12:49 p.m. for no valid registration, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and failure to transfer title. This violation occurred in the 100 block of S. Fourth Street.

At 1 p.m., Oregon police, following the investigation of a disturbance that had occurred in the early morning hours of Feb. 24 in the 100 block of S. Fourth Street, arrested Meg C. Moorehead, 25, of Mt. Morris, for battery. Moorehead was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Marilyn A. Ramirez, 55, of Mt. Morris, was issued a citation at 5:13 p.m. for use of a cell phone while driving. This violation occurred in the 200 block of W. Washington Street.

Jacob W. Diehl, 22, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 5:41 p.m. for no valid registration. This violation occurred in the 100 block of N. Fourth Street.

Gregory A. Helstrom, 62, of Dixon, was issued a citation at 6:07 p.m. for use of a cell phone while driving. This violation occurred in the 100 block of S. Fourth Street.

Matthew T. Modrzejeuski, 28, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 6:35 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred in the 100 block of S. Fourth Street.

Feb. 28 Matthew A. McKenzie, 50, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 1:30 p.m. for speeding, 45 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 500 block of N. Fourth Street.

March 1 Nathan P. Hand, 39, of Chana, was arrested at 3:34 p.m. for driving while license suspended. Hand was transported to the Ogle County Jail. This violation occurred in the 1000 block of Pines Road.

Mark A. Lindsey, 30, of Kewanee, was issued a citation at 7:30 a.m. for operating a vehicle with an expired registration. This violation occurred in the 300 block of W. Washington Street.

Christopher A. Just, Jr., 27, of Mt. Morris, was arrested at 5:18 p.m. for driving while license suspended. Just was also issued a citation for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Just was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred in the 300 block of E. Washington Street.

Victor J. Heather, 17, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 8:14 p.m. for speeding, 48 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 500 block of N. Fourth Street.

Robert E. Lopez, III, 22, of Rockford, was issued a citation at 8:40 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred in the 100 block of N. Fourth Street.
