County buys house on S. Seventh Street $83,000 purchase is part of long range plan

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com The Ogle County Board agreed Tuesday evening to spend $83,000 to further its long range plan.

With only one dissenting vote, the board purchased a house at 105 S. Seventh St. from owners Mark Gale and Kevin Wiegmann.

Lyle Hopkins, of Polo, cast the only no vote and his disapproval was based on the cost.

“It seems like a high price to me,” he said.

Board chairman Kim Gouker, of Byron, said the house was appraised at $83,000 in 2017.

According the terms of the sale, he said, Gale and Wiegmann will use the building for two years to fulfill their obligations with their current tenants.

During that time they will pay the property taxes and pay for any necessary maintenance.

Gouker said the east half of the property will provide parking space for work crews during the construction of the new jail.

The property is part of the county board’s 50-year plan to purchase land adjacent to the courthouse and judicial center when it goes on the market.

The board also recently purchased the property next door at 607 W. Washington St., where the Williams & McCarthy law offices are located, for $60,000. Attorney Kim Krahenbuhl will maintain his office there until he retires.

That property will also be used for parking during jail construction, which is slated to begin in April and take an estimated 20 months.

In a related matter, the board approved leasing the former package liquor store at 513 W. Washington as a construction office while the jail is being built in the 100 block of South Sixth Street.

Gouker said the cost will be an estimated $5,000 less than renting trailers for the same purpose.

The board’s approval of the lease hinges on whether or not the construction managers find it suitable. Gouker said they would inspect the property on Wednesday.

The managers will need to set up their office next month, he said.

gon, told the board that most of the bids for the new jail were opened earlier this week. Bids for the steel are due on March 7.

The board will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 5:30 p.m. to award bids for the jail and to appoint a new Supervisor of Assessments.

Gouker said 12 people applied to replace longtime Supervisor of Assessments Jim Harrison, who retired Dec. 31 after 31 years in the post.

Seven of the applicants are being interviewed by county officials this week.

battles small cell ovarian cancer.

In addition to the expense of cancer treatments, Kate has had multiple surgeries in Madison, Wisconsin, which requires frequent trips and stays there.

She is the daughter of Ray and Rebecca Marschang and has a younger sister Allissa.

The team is captained by seniors Colton Emmert and Alyssa Shore.

Their efforts over the last few years, often on weekend days, have proven effective: on Saturday, February 16th, PCHS’s varsity whiz kids placed 2nd out of 10 area teams at the Masonic Bowl, falling only to Morrison’s team.

The cool part? They actually win a monetary prize for placing at the Masonic Bowl, and Coach Horst has gotten them there the last three years.

A few players were mentioned by name as they worked hard to get that 2nd place title in Prophetstown last weekend.

The team was down by 20 points

with only four questions left, and Hayden Bittinger and Gabe Boothe answered all four of those questions, clutching that win for PCHS. Coach Horst also mentioned senior Alyssa Shore’s efforts during the Masonic bowl and stated specifically that she performed incredibly well, proving her worth as co-captain of the team.

He also nominated her to be featured in this week’s Marcolite: Alyssa Wakenight: What skills does Alyssa bring to the team?

Coach Horst: She brings a great deal of knowledge to the team whether it is in literature, fine arts, geography or any other subject.

You can get coffee anywhere from 7:15 a.m. to 8 a.m., at lunch, and after school until 4:15.

The senate has passed a landmark bill — one that has set aside 1 million acres of new land for national parks and reservations.

The Joshua Tree and Death Valley National Parks are to be enlarged, providing protection to

the striking rivers in California and Utah.

Since Donald Trump took office, national monuments and landmarks have been put on hold, and land has been turned up for oil, gas, and mining leases.

The National Resources Management Act, however, still passed 92-8 in the Republican controlled Senate.

Snow keeps on falling whether we like it or not

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator Polo Historical Society Today the snow just keeps on falling and falling whether we like it or not.

On Feb. 13 we did manage to have our program for Polo Historical Society at the library. We had 32 there which was quite a crowd.

At the end of our board meeting Ellen said, “I need your chairs.”

I thought to myself that there had been quite a few chairs placed in the children’s department when I had gotten there earlier.

But when I went out into the big room, the place was full of people.

I always enjoy looking around in the children’s part of the library to see what they are reading at the present time.

It just seems like yesterday that I

walked to the library every day after school to get some books. Then it was walk three blocks home and get started on reading.

They would be read that evening at home since we were not allowed to run around town and there did not happen to be after school sports.

We did not have sports for girls for many years. Our sports for girls consisted of G.A.A. or Girls Athletic Association which took place during the school day.

I do not remember having a library in our classrooms as a child either. When did those become a part of our life in the classroom?

The teacher did keep track of what books we read because Mary Ann Hackett and I read the most. The Polo Public Library was an integral part of our lives.

We walked as a group to the library from Congress School and

first looked at the skull in Schryver’s Collection of Native American artifacts.

That is no longer at the library and it cannot be out anywhere. When all that collection came to the Polo Historical Society, the skull and some other things had to be hidden away.

So the library really does hold many memories of a community.

The libraries of today are different with many new programs.

Just read through the programs of not only our own but of other communities to see what is offered.

There are many ways to keep everyone busy.

So it was great to see so many last week for the program I had selected for Black History month.

The book “Hidden In Plain View” is still very controversial. Several years ago I did a program for the Franklin Grove Assisted Living

facility when the book was newly out.

Even though the book was written in 1999, it still remains very controversial as to whether quilts were really used during the Underground Railroad when slaves were fleeing to the north.

I simply presented what the book showed in the research of the authors.

Finally one folklorist and quilt historian who has lectured and published papers about the quilt code the book presented has given up trying to debunk the myth.

It is not a matter of one group having the truth and the other not.

Belief does not have to do with factual information. You feel in your gut that it was true and no one can convince you otherwise.

This story of the quilt code simply continues to persist.

By Karen Merlak We had a peek into spring this past week with lots of warm sunshine.

A few more snowstorms are coming to our area which makes our appreciation for springtime grow each day.

For the blessings of every season, we thank our wonderful Creator.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Lyle and Sheryl Hopkins.

James Hopkins continued our celebration of our church and shared a favorite memory.

Our special music was a message in song by Chuck and Bev Kearns.

This past Thursday evening, I

stopped by to visit with Phil and Deb Ohlwine.

It was a special treat as their daughter, Katie Pfundstein, and granddaughter, Amelia, were also visiting.

Our time together was already a joy and Amelia made it even more joyful.

This past Saturday evening, I was a guest at the home of pastor Charlotte Hoppe. We visited over dinner and afterward watched a movie.

Charlotte’s new cats from the Ohlwine farm made an appearance, too.

The cats, Sophie and Ruthie, are quite happy in their new home.

As in the past, I sent treats to each of my children for Valentine’s Day, a tradition my mom started a long time ago.

I still remember the excitement of a care package sent from home.

I hope my children feel the same today.

As I started to leave for church this morning, the front tires of my van became wedged between two unmovable piles of ice and snow.

I tried rocking the van back and

I gave in and called my brother to come and rescue me. Before he could get down to my house, a city plow truck happened by.

Two helpful men came and pushed my van back into the driveway. By this time, it was too late to head to church.

I really missed seeing my church family and especially spending time in worship.

The time at home was spent working on projects that needed to be done and it gave me time to clean up my driveway before heading to work.

My mom taught me to be independent, mostly by example. I feel a real sense of accomplishment when I fix something on my own.

My hope was that I could rock myself out of the icy trouble by myself.

I have been very fortunate to be surrounded by wonderful people who are a great help.

Realizing that I need help on a daily basis has been an ongoing pro-

cess. So many times, I think I am better off alone, but in reality, I need the help of those around me.

My help comes from my wonderful family, brother, sister-in-law, my kids, and nephews. I am surrounded by friends that will easily lend a hand.

I have been rescued from the side of the road by strangers on more than one occasion.

They all play a role in helping me and helping each other. I count them all as blessings in my life, each person showing kindness in their own way.

By lending a hand or just simply listening as needed, we can reach out to those who need a little help.

As we learn of God’s love and compassion, we want to share it with others. We can spread His love with just a small act of kindness to everyone we meet.

I hope to see you next week in our church in the country. I hope the weather cooperates and the snow starts to melt into spring.

Come and join us for a time of kind fellowship and meaningful worship.

Bank donates to Serenity Hospice & Home Stillman Bank recently ended its Purchase with a Purpose Debit Card campaign in which a $1 donation was made to local charities with every Stillman Bank debit card transaction up to $20,000.

Serenity Hospice & Home, Oregon, was one 10 non-profit organizations throughout the Rock River Valley to receive a $2,000 check from the program.

Founded in 1984 as Ogle County Hospice, Serenity Hospice & Home provides an interdisciplinary team of trained hospice personnel to create and maintain a plan of care.

Serenity offers the patient and family a home-like environment, while providing the full complement of Hospice’s comfort-oriented care and services.

Services include pain and symptom management, 24-hour nursing care, assistance with tasks of daily living, friendly visits from volunteers, spiritual and psychosocial counseling for patients and their loved ones, and bereavement care and support for surviving family members.

Rockford University’s Spring 2019 Forum Series continues with a free lecture from American historian and author Ronald C. White, Ph.D. on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. in Maddox Theatre.

White will speak about his latest presidential biography American Ulysses: A Life of Ulysses S. Grant, which has won the William Henry Seward Award for Excellence in Civil War Biography awarded by the Civil War Forum of Metropolitan New York.

The biography was a finalist for the Gilder-Lehrman Military History Book Prize. General David H. Petraeus (Ret.) wrote, “Certain to be recognized as the classic work on Ulysses S. Grant”.

White is one of today’s most astute biographers of Abraham Lincoln. He has written three award-winning and bestselling books on the 16th U.S. president, offering new insights into this fascinating historical figure.

In his latest presidential biography, American Ulysses: A Life of Ulysses S. Grant, White offers a surprising portrait that reshapes our understanding of an American hero.

Dear Editor, Let’s go back to last year, when the subject of closing Sixth Street was voted on by the Oregon City Council.

[It was approved] even after numerous folks, residents of Oregon, spoke against closing Sixth Street and two longtime business owners begged the council not to close the street or allow the jail to be built in our downtown.

Both business owners would and have done many things to help Oregon, usually free or at very little cost to our town.

Three hundred thirty-six residents signed petitions asking the city fathers not to close Sixth Street.

However, three of the city fathers chose to pay no attention to the citizens’ request.

They voted to give the county the right to close Sixth Street and construct the jail, to ignore the citizens who voted for them, asking not to allow Sixth Street to be closed.

These same three council members

are now running for re-election to our city council, asking you to vote for them again.

If you signed petitions, spoke against, or just did not want Sixth Street closed, think about this.

I urge you to think about how they ignored you and our two big local businesses that begged them not to allow the county to change our city.

They paid no attention to your concerns, had a deaf ear on your thoughts.

When you have council members who pay no attention to their voters, you have no voice in your city government.

Think hard on who you vote for.

The county has over four city blocks that have been removed from the tax rolls in the city.

I have lived here for 60 years, operated a small business for 30 years. We raised our family here, as did my children.

My wife was born and raised here, we loved Oregon.

Having served on the city council for 28 years, over 20 years as mayor, and six years on the county board, I have

Forreston finishes second in conference

“Turnovers in the fourth quarter cost us and we didn’t shoot as well as the last couple games,” Dakota coach Mike Bartel said. “Credit to Forreston for its defense and being physical. They bump you off your cuts and you’re not going to get the spots you want.”

In the final minutes, Fyock and Hayden Singley scored on breakaway lay-ups and Greenfield and Fyock nailed every free throw they took.

“Those free throws were huge and the breakaways were really big plays,” Schneiderman said. “You realize how easy the game is when you make free throws and don’t turn the ball over. It was impressive our two guards (Fyock and Greenfield) going 13-for-13.”

With an 11-2 record, Forreston finished in second place in the NUIC east division.

The champion was Polo, whose lone conference loss was to the Cardinals.

Prior to the game, Schneiderman was honored for his 200th coaching victory.

As expected, it was Braedon Fyock coming up clutch in the second half in Forreston’s 48-40 win over Dakota in the conference finale Feb. 15.

But, it was Mitchell Heinz that really got the Cardinals going to start the game and second half.

The 6-foot-3 post player had three of the first five baskets for Forreston, as the two teams got off to a fast start.

“He’s very efficient,” said Forreston coach Jonathan Schneiderman on the post-game radio show. “A big key was getting him going early. He made multiple post moves.”

Fyock did have a 3-pointer in the first quarter, but it was apparent that Dakota defense was geared to stop him.

“Absolutely, everyone looks to stop him,” Schneiderman said. “We have to have other guys step up. Mitchell did that tonight.”

A Jakob Boomgarden score off an offensive rebound gave the Cardinals a 14-13 first-quarter lead in what was turning out to be a physical contest.

Dakota took lead at 20-16 early in the second quarter. After an 80-second possession, Dakota scored again to make it 22-18.

Coming out of a timeout, Fyock hit three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt. He also gave the Cardinals 23-22 lead at half on a basket with seconds left.

Like at the beginning of the first half, it was Heinz making a jump hook and then another basket for a 29-25 lead.

“There’s not as much pressure when you get them in the paint early,” Schneiderman said.

Sandwiched between that was a score

by Ethan Greenfield and then Greenfield upped the lead to 31-25 on a pair of free throws.

Dakota pulled to within 31-29 and had a chance to take the lead, but Hunter Rogers drew a charge. Fyock closed out the third quarter with two more free throws.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Carter Drake made a basket and was fouled. Converting the charity toss, the Indians were within 33-32.

That’s when Dakota either started to tire after playing in its third high-stakes NUIC game in three days or Forreston defense got to them. One of those games

Polo wins conference title with win over Dakota Marcos defeated the Indians 56-43

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com For the first time in 10 years, it is a conference basketball title for the Polo Marcos basketball team.

This one was decided early, with Polo jumping out to a 19-7 lead over Dakota and never looking back on Feb. 16.

The 56-43 margin of victory was larger than a 6-point Marco win in mid December.

“The difference between the two games is we played real physical with them this time,” Polo coach Matt Messer said. “The nice thing is we can win with different styles and beat Dakota on their home floor by 13.”

Polo had a slight 31-29 edge in rebounding, while both teams were around 40 percent shooting. Dakota was also hurt by six more turnovers.

The real difference was the dynamic guard tandem of Brady Webb and Braiden Soltow. The two seniors were in an orbit above everyone else on the Indians’ gym floor in Saturday afternoon make-up game.

It was Soltow running and gunning for 10 first-quarter points on a variety of drives to the basket.

Dakota, which was playing its fourth NUIC game in four days, had trouble stopping either guard.

In the second quarter, it was Webb taking charge with a pair of 3-pointers, as the Marcos went to the break up 32-17.

Josh Clark score two quick baskets and Trey Engelbrecht added another score, as Polo’s lead was cut to 32-23 early in the third quarter.

Tucker Mumford, the only non-senior starter, popped in a 3 and the lead went back to double digits.

Dakota would get it down to nine again, but Draven Wells made a key basket after perhaps the best ball movement of the game for Polo to close out the quarter.

Up 40-31, the Marcos really poured it on in the final quarter. While Dakota was turning the ball over three straight times, Webb and Wells combine for seven points and a 47-31 advantage.

Webb put in five more points in to close out the game, part of his 25 on four 3s, four 2s and 3-for-3 from the line.

“In the second half when we needed a big bucket, Webb made the play,” Messer said. “Anytime they got within nine, we were able to stem the tide, bend and not break.”

Soltow was also perfect from the free-throw line and added 16 points.

“Soltow has been fantastic down the stretch,” Messer said. “His shot is so effortless.”

Polo’s only conference loss was to Forreston in overtime. Dakota and Forreston finished with two losses each in conference play.

“This has been a goal from day one for this group since they were sophomores,” Messer said.“And. This was the first year that I’ve been coaching that we were picked to win it. For us to handle the pressure is a credit to our mental toughness and character.”

Polo also enters the pre-season with the longest running streak of 20-plus win seasons among all teams in the NIC-10, BNC and NUIC at seven years.

Marcos fly by Bulldogs 64-31 at Durand regional It didn’t take the Marcos long to set the tone at the Durand 1A Regional on Tuesday.

Polo jumped out to a 26-7 first quarter lead over host Durand en route to a 64-31 win.

The Bulldogs struggled early with Polo’s fullcourt pressure giving up several turnovers which the Marcos quickly converted into points.

The Marcos shot 60 percent from the field in the quarter with most of the points coming from

layups.

Polo led 36-15 at the half and 55-22 at the end of the third quarter.

Braiden Soltow led the Marcos with 19 points followed by Brady Webb with 13 and Tucker Mumford with 11.

Polo will face the winner of the Freeport Aquin/ Alden Hebron game in the regional championship on Friday, Feb. 22.

Game time is 7 p.m.

At the Forreston 1A Regional, Pecatonica defeated Amboy 65-46 and Dakota beat Kirkland-Hiawatha 69-32.

Forreston played Rockford Christian Life on Wednesday, Feb. 20 and Dakota played Pecatonica. The regional championship will be played on Friday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m.

“Meredith has risen to the occasion,” Brinker added. “She hasn’t tried to do anything outside of herself. She plays where we need her, and when people forget about her, she can have a game like she did.”

Eastland shot 46 percent (27-for-59) from the field and was 18-for-28 from the free-throw line. Henze poured in a team-high 21 points, while Coatney added 13 points, seven rebounds and a game-high six steals.

“I learned my lesson early on by picking up two fouls and sitting on the bench,” Coatney said. “I had to stop being so handsy, and pick up steals when I could.”

Krogman also scored 13 points for Eastland, most of them coming in heavy traffic down on the blocks.

Eastland has hardly wavered in its march through the Class 1A postseason.

Monday’s Belvidere Supersectional was no different.

The Cougars jumped out to a big lead early on in their 74-44 victory over Chicago Richards Career Academy, and never broke a sweat in the final 8 minutes thanks to a strong close to the third quarter.

Eastland (30-4) will return to Normal’s Redbird Arena for the first time since 2015, and will face the Tri-County – the Hume Shiloh co-op – in the 1A state semifinals at 11 a.m. on Friday.

Eastland led 18-2 just 5 minutes into the game, as all five starters scored in the stretch.

Meredith Janssen made a pair of layups, Erin Henze hit a 3 and layup, Lydia Coatney recorded a putback and sank three free throws after being fouled shooting a 3, and Karlie Krogman and Gabby Snyder each made a layup.

Richards (22-5) responded by hitting three 3s in a row – two from Shandalaya Coleman and one from Ladasia O’Neal – to trim its deficit to 18-11. However, Henze found Krogman on the left block for a layup off an inbounds play to end the first quarter.

Eastland then scored the first nine points of the second. Janssen found room for a layup and a jumper, Henze connected on a 3, and both Coatney and Krogman split a pair of free throws. The Cougars spent the entire quarter in the bonus, going 6-for-10 from the foul line.

The Warriors were just 1-for-8 shooting with six turnovers in the second, as they trailed 35-20.

Shandalaya Coleman converted a three-point play cut Richards’ deficit to 39-27 with 4:49 left in the third, but 12 turnovers in the quarter doomed the Warriors.

Eastland closed the third on a 20-3 run, capped by a Janssen putback off a Henze miss.

“We went back to the offense we ran in the first half, and that seemed to change things,” Eastland coach Nicole Brinker said. “We did a great job of finding each other and getting some easy baskets, and when we didn’t get easy baskets, we crashed the boards hard and got putbacks.”

Janssen finished with 18 points on an efficient 8-for-10 shooting, and also pulled down seven rebounds for the Cougars.

Henze, Carr, and Hughes advance in 3-point contest LANARK — Five area basketball players have advanced to the finals of the Three-Point Shown at the Redbird Arena in Normal.

The event is sponsored by COUNTRY Financial and the Illinois High School Association.

Wrestlers take tough road to success for OHS I

s Oregon wrestling back?

With four state placers at Champaign this past weekend, it sure is looking like it. It is the most the Hawks have had since 2001, when Andy Ballard, Eric Berg, Jim Roschi and Tony Pedrosa all brought home medals.

In 1997, 98, 99, 00 and 04, Oregon claimed three state medalists in what was the golden era of Hawk wrestling under Mike Papini.

That was in a 2-class system with only four places being given out, compared to the current set-up of three classes and six places. But, it should be noted that 2019 medalists Andrew Herbst, Jacob Milliman, Noah Paul and Chase Clark were all in the top four of their weight class.

A big difference between then and now is getting it done with less personnel and athleticism.

Credit to coach Kip Crandall and the smattering of dedicated kids that have stuck with wrestling. It is definitely a tougher road to hoe than in the glory days when wrestling was king at the high school.

the state led the way with 7 state champs in 1A. That’s how it’s been for decades, though the central part of the state is making inroads with 6 champs.

How about Dakota crowning its 43rd individual state champ, tops in 1A? What a program with the energetic Pete Alber at the helm.

Boys Basketball Regionals With boys regional basketball going on this week, the area 1A brackets are tougher than 2A – just like the girls were.

Hall Township and Sterling Newman as No. 1 sub-sectional seeds don’t exactly strike fear into anyone. The other sub-sectional feeding into the DeKalb super-sectional is weak, as well, opening the door for a relative unknown to make state.

Newman’s record is 27-3, but nine of those wins have been by five points or less. The Comets win those close games more because of mental fortitude than abilities.

It’s surprising to see Winnebago as a No. 7 seed. Even though they are at .500, they only lost to Newman by a point and gave a full-strength Rock Falls (ranked in 3A) quite a battle last week.

The last time ‘Bago finished with a losing record was 2001, with five state trophies in that time span.

Look for the Indians get back towards the top next year with plenty of young returners. In the BNC, Dixon and Rock Falls will lose the most with next year’s conference race wide open.

Rockford Christian and Lutheran have been down this year and who knows what next year will bring.

That’s the nature of private schools.

What has happened to Mendota?

Once known as a basketball school, it’s sunk to its worst record ever at 3-23, likely the result of changing demographics in the town.

With the BNC ripe for the picking,

can Oregon and its promising junior class rise to the upper echelon of the league? It will be one of the intriguing storylines for next year.

As far as this year goes, how about a small round of applause to seniors Dalton Hermes and Jackson Buck for sticking it out all four years as basically the only basketball players in their class.

After 23 years of covering ball games, it was bound to happen – going to the wrong town for an event. That’s what happened Saturday when I showed up at Polo for the basketball game that was being played at Dakota.

It was a case of not paying attention and thankfully, Tommy Bardell and John Gavin were doing the broadcast on WLLT, so not all was lost for me.

It sounded like I missed quite a performance by Braiden Soltow and Brady Webb. Likewise with Braeden Fyock knocking down 27 against Winnebago in a 42040 Cardinal win on Saturday. ​

Illinois state trooper is injured in crash on I-39 A District 1 Illinois State Trooper was injured Monday evening when his squad car was side-swiped by a semi tractor-trailer during a routine

traffic stop in Interstate 39 between Ill. 64 and 72.

The crash occurred at approximately 6:43 p.m. and affected three

right lane, the trailer swerved onto the right shoulder and side-swiped the driver side of the trooper’s squad car, causing extensive damage.

The driver side of the passenger vehicle the trooper had pulled over was also side swiped.

A fifth vehicle sustained damage from debris in the roadway caused by the crash, but was not directly involved.

The trooper suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a local area hospital for treatment and has since been released. No other injuries were reported.

Toure was issued citations for violation of Scott’s Law and improper lane usage.

When approaching an emergency vehicle, or any vehicle with their hazard lights activated, drivers are required to slow down and move over and change lanes if possible.

Illinois State Police said the trooper, who they did not identify, was inside his squad car conducting a traffic stop on the right shoulder of I-39 northbound at milepost 108 in Ogle County, with his emergency lights activated.

While he was stationary on the right shoulder, his squad car was sideswiped by the semi, driven by Adam Toure, 58, of Chicago.

According to a press release, preliminary reports indicate the semi was traveling in the right lane and attempted to move into the left lane, which was occupied by another commercial motor vehicle.

At this time, the semi struck the commercial motor vehicle traveling in the left lane, before taking evasive action, and veering back into the right lane.

An eastbound car driven by Ariadna Calderon, 18, Rochelle, went out of control and entered into oncoming traffic, colliding with a vehicle occupied by Ignacio Constellanos, 34, Rosa Contreras-Garcia, 37, and Tania Contreras-Garcia, 30, all of Rochelle.

All four were transported to Rochelle Community Hospital by Rochelle EMS to be evaluated for injuries.

Calderon received citations for failure to reduce speed and improper lane usage.

Feb. 13 Melvin Amaya-Reyes, 29, of Rochelle, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle

OBITUARIES ZONDRA F. BALEY Zondra Faye (Klaas) Baley, 83, of Polo, died on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019 at Pinecrest Terrace, Mt. Morris, with her family at her side.

She was born on March 28, 1935 to Elmer and Aleatha (Diestelmeier) Klaas in Freeport.

Zondra married James Baley on Oct. 4, 1952.

She worked for a brief time at Lena State Bank. Her main role in life was being a homemaker and doing for others.

She was very active in her church, Polo Women’s Club, Polo Garden Club, and Card Club.

DIANE J. LOHMAN Diane J. Lohman, 73, of Freeport, was taken home to be with the Lord on Monday, Feb. 11, 2019.

Diane was born on Oct. 5, 1945 in Freeport, the daughter of John E. and Stella (Janssen) Ruter, of Baileyville.

She attended school in Forreston and graduated as salutatorian of the Forreston High School Class of 1963.

After graduation, she went to work for Micro Switch in Freeport, where she worked in the personnel department.

Diane married Jim Lohman on June 18, 1966 at the Baileyville Reformed Church, where they met. Their wedding was officiated by James’ father, Rev. Donald Lohman.

WALLACE KILKER Wallace “Wally” Kilker, 88, of Forreston, died on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2019 at Pearl Pavilion, Freeport.

He was born on Jan. 13, 1931 in Freeport, the son of Ervin and Dorothy (Hartje) Kilker.

Wally married Wilma Saxby on June 22, 1951. She died on Sept. 16, 2001.

Wally worked for Groenewold Fur & Wool and was an auctioneer for Mack Auction.

He was a member of North Grove Evangelical Church and the Forreston

Diane was a loving wife, mother,grandmother, and sister and enjoyed spending time with her family.

She enjoyed various sewing projects including clothes for herself and family.

She enjoyed traveling to new places and seeing new sights.

She had a love for horses as a child and raised a pony for the last several years.

She had recently started following in the footsteps of her sister as an avid Cubs fan.

Surviving are her husband, Jim; her son, Jon (Katie) Lohman, of San Jose, California; daughter, Katrina Smith, of Freeport; grandson, Micah Lohman; and granddaughters Evelyn Lohman, Denise

Lohman, Savannah Smith, and Alexis Smith.

She is also survived by her brother, Donald Ruter, of Freeport; two brothersin-law, Mark (Myrna) Lohman, and Phil (Kathy) Lohman; and a sister-in-law, Wanetta (Aldo) Crose; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her in-laws, Donald and Gladys Lohman; her sister, Alma Schultz; and sister-in-law, Carolyn Ruter; along with three nieces and two nephews.

Funeral services were held on Feb. 16 at Park Hills Church, Freeport, with Rev. Larry Elliot officiating.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund for Christian Missions trips has been established. Arrangements were completed

by Burke Tubbs Funeral Home, Freeport.

He was an avid Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, and Forreston Cardinal fan. He enjoyed gardening.

Wally is survived by his three sons, Russell Kilker, of Lake Summerset, Randy Kilker, of Hypoloxo, Florida, and Kirk (Kathy) Kilker, Batavia; his daughter, Valerie (Dave) Pettett, of East Peoria; three sisters, Phyllis

(Lawrence) Ascher, Rhowena Genandt, and Shirley (David) Vietmeier; seven grandchildren, Kelly, Kristyn, Sean, Allison, Donovan, Aaron, and Kelsey; and his great-granddaughter Bella.

Wally was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 50 years, Wilma; and brother-inlaw, Allan Genandt.

Funeral services will be held on Sat-

urday, Feb. 23 at 10 a.m. at North Grove Evangelical Church, 10384 W. Coffman Rd., Forreston, with Rev. Timothy Hotchkiss officiating.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Feb. 22 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home, Forreston.

Burial will be in North Grove Evangelical Cemetery.

Facts and figures on farm safety According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, agriculture is among the most hazardous industries. Fatal and nonfatal injuries pose a significant threat to farmers, including the many young people who work on farms. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, in an effort to promote productive and safe workplaces, supports programs that conduct research on injuries associated with agriculture as well as pesticide exposure, pulmonary disease, musculoskeletal disorders, hearing loss, and stress. Studying the results of such research, compiled

by NIOSH, may compel veteran and novice farmers to further emphasize safety measures and promote practices that can reduce risk for accidents on the farm.

• Estimates indicate that there were roughly 2.1 million full-time workers employed in production agriculture in 2017 and between 1.4 and 2.1 million hired crop workers employed annually on crop farms in the United States.

• An estimated 893,000 young people

under 20 years of age resided on farms in 2014. More than half of those young people performed farm work, and an additional 266,000 youth were hired to work on farms in 2014.

• Each day, roughly 100 agricultural workers suffer injuries that cause them to miss time at work.

• In 2014, 12,000 youth were injured on farms, and 4,000 of those youths could trace their injuries to farm work.

• In 2016, 417 farmers and farm workers died from work-related injuries. Tractor overturns and other transportation incidents were the leading cause of death for these farmers and farm workers.

• A rollover protection system, or ROPS, is a structure, similar to rollcages and rollbars in cars and trucks, intended to protect farm equipment operators from injuries caused by overturns or rollovers. NIOSH notes that an ROPS is the most effective way to prevent overturn deaths. Despite that, in 2014, only 62 percent of tractors used on farms in the U.S. were equipped with an ROPS.

32 Local Farmall on display in Chicago

W

hat are the chances of a local farmer’s tractor ending up in a Chicago museum?

You might say it’s something of a long shot.

But the odds must have been in Richard Schmitt’s favor about a year ago because an appearance at a local tractor show turned one of his collectible tractors into a museum showpiece.

Schmitt, 84, of Sterling has farmed all his life near Sterling, and has been collecting tractors for decades and displaying them at area shows.

“About a year ago, I had a tractor over at a tractor show at Long Shot (Bar and Grill in Rock Falls). I have a name on my tractors. They asked somebody who it was, and got my number,” Schmitt said.

“They” turned out to be representatives with the Chicago History Museum, who were interested in displaying Schmitt’s 1934 Farmall B International, a request he was only too happy to oblige – and not just because he wanted to show off his pride and joy.

“I’ve got about 55 of ‘em … and the reason I loaned it to her (Angela Mahoney, a curator at the museum) is so that it’d make me room for another tractor,” he told WTTW Chicago during an interview in October, when he visit-

ed the museum.

The tractor, which he bought in 1970, is part of the museum’s “Modern by Design: Chicago Streamlines America” exhibit, which features examples of Chicago-made items that helped shape the modern, streamlined style that emerged during the early 1930s.

Some of The Windy City’s streamlined products – from Radio Flyer wagons to Sunbeam appliances to Farmall tractors – became national best-sellers and remain icons of modern American design.

Tractors have been part of Schmitt’s life for as long as he can remember.

A third-generation farmer, his grandfather gave him a rubber tractor and plow when he was 3. He purchased his farm on Fulfs Road in 1959 with his first wife, Alice, and 4 years later he bought his first collectible tractor, a 1934 Farmall F-20.

“That tractor was made June 5, 1934, the day I was born,” Schmitt said.

After his first tractor came to the end of its useful life, Schmitt restored it and started showing it at tractor shows and parades.

From there, his passion for power just kept picking up speed, albeit not much speed.

“This tractor (the Farmall B) only has like 15, 18 horsepower. A lawnmower has got that now,” he told WTTW.

It was during his time working for the family business, Schmitt Plumbing in Dixon, when he started buying and collecting tractors.

“I was a plumber, and did a lot of pump work for farms,” Schmitt said.

Schmitt said he likes how the museum’s displaying the Farmall-B. “It’s enclosed in glass all around,” he said.

He continues to take part in tractor shows. Richard’s favorite piece in his collection is a 1966 G1000 Minneapolis Moline tractor his father purchased new.

“He still loves to go on rides and has tractor shows at the house,” his second wife, Roxanne, 73, said – proof positive
