Warmer weather brings out good crowd 450-500 shop at seventh annual February Finds

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Almost spring-like temperatures on Saturday after a week of snow and bitter cold brought a buying crowd to the seventh annual February Finds Antiques and Collectible Market.

With the temperature nearing 40, an almost 70-degree upswing from three days earlier, the parking lot at the Mt. Morris Moose Family Center was filled with cars by late morning.

Inside, two rooms in the center were filled with vendors greeting a steady stream of shoppers.

The atmosphere was cordial as shoppers and vendors discussed the items for sale and chatted with friends they made in previous years at the event.

“I think everyone is glad to get out after last week,” said first time vendor Rhonda Heflin, of Rockford.

Tammy Provo, of Mt. Morris, a veteran vendor at the event agreed. “I think everybody is sick of being housebound,” she said.

Both reported that their booths were staying busy.

Shoppers were apparently satisfied as well.

Ellen Bramm, of Mt. Morris, had her arms full of packages well before noon.

“I’m thrilled! I got two music boxes. She even had the boxes for them,” she said. “And good prices. It’s been great!”

Lori Peterson, of Mt. Morris, held up a painting of London that she had just purchased.

“I’ve been here about three minutes and I’ve already found a painting I love,” she said.

In the other room, Darrel and Nylia Swalve, of Forreston, were taking a close look at the treasures offered by Mt. Morris vendors Howie Herman and Kris Brunner.

Nylia said they have come to the event in previous years.

“We look for local things,” she said. “This show has unusual things that you don’t always see.”

“We just buy what we like,” Darrel said. “We’ve been collecting a long time.”

Herman had good things to say about the market.

“It’s a great event. People love old stuff and there’s a lot of socializing going on,” he said.

Event organizer Edie White said an estimated 450 to 500 people attended the show.

“It was a steady crowd all day. All the vendors were happy,” she said. “Besides being an antiques and collectibles market, it’s also a social event. A lot of local people come in the morning and stay all day.”

Proceeds from the event each year are split between the Moose Lodge and another local organization.

White said this year’s second recipient was the Mt. Morris Work Group for its restoration of the Price Fountain on the downtown campus.

Other recipients over the years include the Let Freedom Ring Festival, Mt. Morris Fire Department, Serenity Hospice & Home, and the Mt. Morris PEO Chapter.

Firefighters from more than a dozen area fire departments fought not only flames but also bitterly cold weather conditions Jan. 30 at a house fire approximately eight miles northeast of Chana. “We escalated the alarms because of the weather conditions to maximize equipment and manpower,� said Lynn-Scott-Rock Assistant Fire Chief Rick Mott.

Sheldon and Joyce Rueff safely escaped, along with their dog, from their burning home at 10134 E. Lindenwood Rd. just before 8 p.m. “They smelled smoke, saw smoke, and their fire alarms were going off, so they called 911 and got out of the house,� Mott said.

The fire was well advanced when the first trucks arrived at the 10 to 15 year-old one-story home, which was a total loss. “There was already heavy fire in the back on the exposed lower level,� Mott said.

Although the cause of the fire has not been definitely determined,

Mott said a fire in the fireplace is suspected. “We’re kind of zeroing in on that,� he said.

Sixty-three firefighters were on the scene with the mercury nearing -30 and wind chill in the -40s.

Mott said the engines pumping water froze up and had to be changed out, valves on engines were freezing open and shut, firefighters’ air packs were freezing up, and their face masks were freezing over. “The firefighters on the front line were covered with ice,� he said. “Luckily, the winds had died down somewhat by then. It was like an ice rink. Several firefighters fell but fortunately no one was hurt.�

Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle brought the sheriff’s department’s command trailer to the scene to use as a warming facility for the firefighters.

Some local firefighters and equipment were unavailable because they had already been called to assist the West Suburban Fire Department at a fire that destroyed a Rockford Township building the same night.

“The Gallant 15th of Illinois History of a Civil War Volunteer Infantry Regiment,” a project of more than 10 years by Betty Obendorf, curator of the Polo Historical Society, and Kathy Pasch, graphic designer and local historian of Forreston, is in its final stages.

Cook’s office complies with federal voting laws Last day to register to vote is March 5 Ogle County Clerk Laura J. Cook said last week that her office complies with the Federal Voting Accessibility for the Elderly and Handicapped Act. Temporarily physically incapacitated voters who find it difficult or nearly impossible to go to the polls on election day may now ask for a vote by mail ballot without having the signature from their physician, as long as they contact the Cook’s office and ask for an application.

“You can early vote in person at the County Clerk’s Office, or request a vote by mail ballot and we will send an application to be filled out and on return of that application, we will then send out the ballot,” Cook said.

Voters can download an application by visiting the Ogle County website at www.oglecounty.org.

Go to the “I Want To” tab and select “Application for Vote by Mail Ballot.”

This application must be filled out and mailed or hand delivered to the county clerk’s office.

Cook will then mail the vote by mail ballot to the voter.

After voting the vote by mail ballot it must be mailed or hand delivered back to the county clerk’s office to be counted on election day.

The Ogle County Courthouse is accessible to the handicapped for voter registration.

“We will send a deputy registrar

to the residence of any person who wishes to register to vote and is unable to go to a registrar,” Cook said.

The last day to register to vote or change an address is Tuesday, March 5, with the exception of grace period voter registration and transfer of registration which begins Wednesday, March 6 and ending Tuesday, April 2 at the county clerk’s office.

Early voting will be conducted at the county clerk’s office at the Ogle County Courthouse, 105 S. Fifth St., Oregon, from Thursday, Feb. 21 through Monday, April 1 for all Ogle County precincts.

For the Flagg and Dement Township precincts only, early voting will be conducted at the Flagg Township Building, 303 W. Ill. 38, Rochelle, from Wednesday, March 27 through Friday, March 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturday, March 30 from 9 a.m. to noon.

The first day to apply for a vote by mail ballot for the April 2 Consolidated Election was Jan. 2.

The first day to mail a vote by mail ballot is Thursday, Feb. 21 and the last day for mailing a ballot from the county clerk’s office is Thursday, March 28.

Bitter cold and snow cancel classes

Forrestville Valley students finally returned to their classrooms Monday after an unscheduled “vacation” of almost two weeks.

Extreme winter weather caused the cancellation of school for seven of the last 10 days in the district.

And that was on top of a day off on Monday, Jan. 21 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Districts all over Ogle County and across northern Illinois dismissed around noon the following day, Jan. 22, with a snowstorm moving in.

Classes were called off again on Jan. 23 due to the road conditions from the six or more inches of drifting snow that fell.

It was back to class on Jan. 24, but more time off the next day because of road conditions and temperatures well below zero.

Then Old Man Winter really got down to business. Sunday evening into Monday, Jan. 28 brought at least six more inches of blowing snow followed by plummeting temperatures.

The low by early on Wednesday, Jan. 30 was -28 with north and northwest winds making it feel like an estimated -55.

On Thursday morning the mercury hit -38 in nearby Mt. Carroll, a state record for the coldest temperature ever.

Students in all local districts got all four days off. Many returned to class on Friday, Feb. 1, but not in the Forrestville Valley School District.

The cold claimed yet one more day, this time affecting their mode of transportation.

The impromptu vacation doesn’t come without a cost. Students will have to attend five more days than planned to make up for it.

Polo School Superintendent Chris Rademacher said the use of all five emergency days means the fourth quarter will end on June 6, rather than May 30.

Oregon Superintendent Tom Mahoney said students in that district will also go to school five extra days.

The district has moved a teachers’ institute day from Feb. 15 to the end of the year, allowing students to get out of school for the year on May 24. The last day of school had been scheduled for May 20.

Mahoney said he will initiate the process to have the additional emergency days declared Act of God Days.

The request needs the approval of the Regional Office of Education and the Illinois State Board of Education.

Smith said school will likely end on June 5 as scheduled because the calendar has five days built into it

for emergency days. However, some days previously scheduled as vacation may become attendance days.

The Forrestville Valley School Board was scheduled to approve a revised school calendar at a special meeting on Feb. 6.

On the bright side, spring could be here soon.

Last Saturday dawned cloudy and stayed that way until late morning — which means if the groundhog got up early enough, he definitely did not see his shadow.

And that, according to weather legend, means spring is “just around the corner.”

Power plants perform at full power during cold spell According to a press release from Exelon Generation, while arctic winds sent temperatures plunging dangerously and electricity demand soaring last week, the utility’s six Illinois nuclear plants operated at full power, producing enough carbon-free electricity to keep 11 million homes, businesses, schools and hospitals safe and warm.

During the 2014 polar vortex, Exelon Generation’s nuclear fleet was critical to meeting electricity demand, as coal piles froze, and natural gas supplies were re-routed for home heating.

Snowstorm finishes up in time for store opening New grocery store is bright and spacious

When we went to bed in the evening before all had been rather calm.

Now as I watched the wind outside I thought to myself that my family might have been correct. I might not get to the grocery store in the morning.

However, when morning dawned, all was calm again. Except, we again, had several inches of snow.

Ed and Karen Olsen picked me up and we became part of the big group at the store for the opening.

It was indeed an exciting time as we looked all over — so bright, new, nice wide aisles, and easy to move around. That is what I need at my age.

Plus the whole store look on the outside is top of the line. I love the new signs.

Tuesday morning as temperatures started down Kenneth and I needed gas in the car.

It was not a good morning to be

out but Carol at Casey’s came out and put gas in for us. Bless her heart but that is what a small community is all about.

I then went back to the store for food from the deli. The weather report sounded like we would not be getting out for a while so I needed to be prepared.

I was correct in my assumption that the deli would have what I wanted. We loved the Salisbury steaks that were all ready to eat.

As we sat in the house for the next several days asking Alexa what was the temperature was, we were amazed at how close the weather people came in their predictions.

Our family called from the south to see how we were doing and found out we had resorted to watching game shows on TV. At least we were warm in the house. Susan, Tim, and Lily up in Mt. Carroll could only get their

house warmed up to 56 degrees.

Our little house in town was fine, and I could only guess what it would have been if we were still living in the country.

I did worry about all the little animals out in this extreme cold.

A couple of years ago a large fluffy cat sat on top of our lattice work on our back porch gazing in our kitchen window.

It was winter and cold. I went to the door but it was quickly gone.

I saw it again on one of those cold nights zipping by on our front sidewalk.

I wanted to open the door and welcome it in but it did not tarry long in front of our house. I hoped it went on into a nice warm house up the line.

It has been unusual weather for a very large portion of the area.

We hope that it does not return for another 25 years or more.

Charlotte continued her series on growing the church reminding us while we are doing our part, God will be doing His. On Friday evening, I met a group from church for dinner at a restaurant in Sterling before attending the Luther Nordic Choir concert at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sterling.

The choir was outstanding and very entertaining.

Joining in the fun were James and Nancy Hopkins, Don and Vicki Hay, Charlotte Hoppe, Sandra Ford, and Larry and Jeanette Larson from the First Christian Church of Rock Falls.

We shared a wonderful meal and fellowship before attending the concert.

Don and Vicki Hay have just returned from a visit with their children and grandchildren.

Their first stop was to the Wilderness Resort in the Wisconsin Dells.

While there, they visited with their daughter, Christine Stephens, her

husband, Lance, and their children, Sydney, Owen, and Avery.

The families enjoyed skiing at Cascade Mountain and water parks at the resort.

From there, Don and Vicki flew to Burlington, Vermont and stayed at the Snowed Inn in Killington to visit with their son Mack Hay, his wife, Shea, and their children, Reef, Ellis, Remi, and Pippin.

The visit in Vermont also included members of Shea’s family.

On the first day of their stay, the rain kept the families inside.

They took part in some indoor rock climbing.

On the way back to Burlington, they visited a Norman Rockwell museum and the Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory.

It was a fun and memorable trip that ended with travel woes through our freezing cold temperatures and snow.

Don and Vicki made many more memories with their wonderful family.

Over the week of dangerous temperatures, my workplace closed for one and a half days.

It has been a very long time since

I have benefited from a “snow day.”

Once the announcement was made, I instantly started to make lists of things that I could do with a free day.

While I accomplished most of the tasks on my list, I did find time to rest.

I especially enjoyed not setting my alarm and sleeping until I was ready to wake up.

It’s funny how our bodies know when we need to rest.

Rest is important for healing, physically and spiritually.

We need rest to be revitalized and to face whatever may come our way.

Rest can come in different ways. I find new energy by spending time in worship with my church family.

Making time for rest can be difficult in our busy lives. We won’t always have an unexpected snow day to catch up.

It is good to know that God wants us to be rested so that we can continue to do His good work.

I hope to see you next week in our little church in the country. Come and meet our church family.

Come and be rejuvenated and rested for the coming week ahead.

Around 1 a.m. early on Monday I looked out the front window and was amazed at what was going on.

I thought to myself that this must be a roar of wind in the country. I remember some of those blizzard days at Eagle Point when I thought the roof was going to leave the house.

So early Monday morning I sat and watched in wonder at how weather can change so quickly.

Oregon Park District wins award for Farm to Table The Oregon Park District recently attended the annual Illinois Association of Park Districts and Illinois Park and Recreation Association conference in Chicago.

IPRA presented its 2018 Outstanding Program or Special Event Award in both Division I and Overall program to the Oregon Park District for their Farm to Table event held in July 2018.

The Farm to Table event was held at Oak Lane, Oregon this past summer and offered a unique dining experience. Local celebrity chefs prepared dinner featuring fresh, local ingredients.

The four-course dinner was paired with wine and was held as a fundraiser for the Oregon Park District Scholarship Fund.

The Outstanding Program or Special Event Award recognizes public agencies for their exceptional and unique achievements in program development and implementation.

“The Oregon Park District is honored to receive recognition for the Farm to Table Dinner,” said Erin Folk, Executive Director. “Our employees are our greatest asset and I am pleased to see them recognized for their creativity and professionalism when developing programs for our community to enjoy.

More than 50 youth participated in the 2019 4-H Day of Dabbling held Jan. 26 at the Oregon Church of God. Sponsored by University of Illinois Extension Ogle County, the annual event was open to all youth, ages 5-15.

It was designed to provide participants with the opportunity to explore numerous areas of 4-H project work hands-on.

Fifteen workshops were offered; each participant selected three. Project areas touched on included: visual arts, woodworking, birds, and science.

As a result of the workshop, participants took home creations ranging from slime to beaded wind chimes and candles to bird feeders.

Workshops were conducted by 4-H volunteers. ENAG artists to be featured in art show at the Byron Museum The Byron Museum of History will host an art show in February and March featuring the work of mainly local artists.

A reception for the artists and to officially open the show will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. The museum is located at , 110 N. Union St., Byron. Admission is always free.

Most of the artwork was submitted by members of the Eagle’s Nest Art Group.

The Oregon Park District has joined forces with Lorado Taft Campus to offer a new educational program for 3rd-8th graders.

Maple Sugar Mayhem will occur on Monday, Feb. 25 from 4-5 p.m.

The fee is $8 for residents and $10 for non-residents.

“Has your child ever wonder about the science behind creating maple syrup?,” asked Tina Ketter, superintendent of recreation. “The talented staff at Taft Campus is ready to share their knowledge. Students will learn about the sap produced by maple trees, how to identify trees in the winter, how to tap a tree and maple syrup production.”

Everyone will meet at Taft Campus, Ketter said.

READING MATTERS

Use illustrations to comprehend text In recent years researchers have learned that there are several key strategies that good readers use to help them understand what they read.

Although good readers use multiple strategies at the same time it can be helpful for us to talk with our children and grandchildren about these key strategies separately as well.

Let’s begin in this column with a look at some ideas about why it is important for readers to become strategic and consider one early reading strategy.

Then for each of the next several columns we’ll look at another strategy and ways we can explore it as we read to and with our children and grandchildren.

It is important that children learn early on that reading should

In nonfiction we can use the photographs, charts, maps, and illustrations to discuss what information we might learn in the book.

During reading we should check the illustrations and notice how they support the meaning of the words.

Sometimes illustrators add things to their art that actually give additional information.

Sometimes there are extra things going on in the illustrations, and we should pay attention to that.

All readers need to know that there are things they can do to help themselves as they try to make meaning of text.

It is definitely good to verbalize the strategies we use and why.

We can be purposeful about saying that using pictures and illustrations and photographs is one way we help ourselves understand what we read.

Going into the 1A regional game with Pecatonica on Monday, Polo basketball coach Jeff Grobe wanted to stop opposing guard Alyse Southard.

Unfortunately for the Marcos, Pecatonica had plenty of other scorers as they beat Polo 57-44.

Madalyn Fitzanko made 4-of-5 shots from behind the arc in a 4-minute span of the second quarter, as Pec went on a 25-point scoring spree.

Teammate Libby Miller chipped in two more 3s in that quarter and No. 9 seed Polo (5-18) would never recover from the offensive onslaught.

“Every team we play tries to stop (Southard),” Pec coach Tim Bukoski said. “I’ve stressed the whole year that someone else has to step up and help Alyse. It’s nice to see they believed in themselves and came through tonight.”

Helped by a pair of 3-pointers by Becca Wagner, Polo only trailed 14-9 early in the second quarter. It was shaky at first, with Grobe calling a timeout 4:30 into the game and the Marcos down 8-2.

That’s when Wagner got it going.

But, Pec would go on a 10-point run and also score on six of its next eight possessions.

The Marcos cut into the 24-9 lead with 16 points in the final five minutes of the quarter to make it 39-25 at halftime.

Harper Clark started the rally with a score and Wagner and Natalie Nelson added baskets. Marah Blake, who got into foul trouble in the first two minutes of the game, made a pair of free throws and Mallory Patterson nailed three 3s in a row.

Going against a Pecatonica (13-12) team that started four seniors and a junior, Polo’s first-half scoring was all by freshmen and sophomores.

“The future looks good here,” said Grobe, who has been without leading scorer Alex Dusing because of injury. “Lady Marco basketball is going to be fun the next couple years.

Talent-loaded regional tough for Polo grapplers Only one Marco gets through to sectional

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com In the toughest 1A wrestling regional in the state with stateranked Lena-Winslow, Dakota, Byron and Rock Falls, along with standout Oregon, Newman and West Carroll individuals, only one Polo wrestler was able to advance to the sectional.

Marcus McKenna finished second at the 160-pound weight class to undefeated Case Harmston of LenaWinslow/Stockton.

Harmston got out to a 4-0 lead, but McKenna did ride him for 1:40 of the second period.

Harmston then scored a reversal for a 6-0 lead heading into the final period.

Trailing 8-0 with the match winding down, McKenna did make things interesting with a reversal

and putting Harmston in a potential pin-winning situation.

But, the match came to a close and the younger brother of former Stockton star and NIU football player Ty Harmston took his 40th straight win.

“Ten more seconds and we win,” Polo coach Jesse Culbertson said.

To reach the finals, the No. 3 seed McKenna pinned No. 2 seed Devon Parker of Rock Falls in 3:31.

“I got him in a cradle for the pin,” McKenna said. “A couple of scrambles went my way.”

In the first round, McKenna had another pin to advance to the semifinals. He will go into the sectional with a 28-13 record.

“I don’t know what it is, but when it comes to the state series, Marcus steps it up,” Culbertson said.

Alex Davies (28-15) came one match away from joining McKenna at the sectional. In the third-place match at 145, he lost to Oregon’s Jokiah Sewell by pin.

Patterson’s fourth 3 in a row pulled Polo to within 41-31 early in the third quarter. Freshman Nicole Boelens cut the lead to 8 with a basket on a Kayla Blum assist.

“I told them at halftime, we wanted to cut the lead to six,” Grobe said.

“But, they came down and made a couple 3s.”

In the third quarter, Pec did all they could to let Polo back in the game. Twelve straight possessions led to either a turnover or one shot and done. Southard finally broke the drought with a 3 and Miller made an old-fashioned 3 to get the lead back up to 46-33.

Neither team was very effective on offense in the final quarter and the Indians held on for the 13-point win with all five starters scoring between 9 and 13 points.

Polo, which was 15-for-56 (27 percent) from the field, was led by Patterson with 17 points, followed by Wagner (8), Blake (6), Boelens (5) and senior Lizzy Stamm with 4. Polo forced Pec into 20 turnovers and only trailed in rebounding 39-37.

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com In a 48-46 win over Forreston on Feb. 2, Polo’s Braiden Soltow pulled a Braeden Fyock on the Cardinals.

With his team trailing 37-31 after three quarters and Brady Webb being shut down, it was Soltow coming to the rescue in the second half with 15 points and a heavy dose of defense.

“Brady’s a hell of player,” Soltow said. “They took him away and it was my chance to step up and take over the offense for this game. What a great game. The atmosphere was awesome.”

Webb and Fyock got into a shoot-

er’s duel at the other NUIC game between these two teams with Fyock leading his team to the win. This time out, the physical Forreston defense kept Webb from scoring in the second half. ”Soltow was fantastic and got into shots he liked,” Polo coach Matt Messer said. “The (Hunter) Rogers kid did a nice job on Webb, but Soltow had his back.”

Here is what Soltow did: In scoring all but one of his team’s third-quarter points, he managed to put in a 360-degree shot off the dribble and then almost saved a Marco takeaway with a nifty backhanded pass a few seconds later.

In the fourth quarter, he got some much-needed help from Draven Wells. In what was the most critical basket for either team, Wells made an off-balance arching jumper to give Polo its biggest lead at 46-42 with less than two minutes left in the games.

“That was a huge bucket and that defines who Draven is,” Soltow said.

“It was the cushion we needed.”

Wells also came up with a steal with 20 seconds left to help seal the win. The only drawback in the waning moments for Polo was 2-for-6 free throw shooting.

“Our free throws were horrendous and almost cost us the game,”

Messer said.

Two missed charity tosses by Wells after the steal gave Forreston a chance for a game-winning shot with 4.7 seconds left.

Fyock got off a difficult attempt from past the top of the key, but it bounced off the rim and Polo put itself in the driver’s seat for the NUIC crown and a No. 1 sub-sectional seed.

“This was big for the conference race and seed,” said Messer, who was making his way through a gauntlet of interviews from three radio stations covering the game.

“The kids want a lot more, including

then lost in the semis on a pin at the 5:21 mark

In the wrestlebacks, he took a 5-2 lead over Ethan Bonnell of Byron. A Bonnell takedown narrowed the score to 5-4.

That was as close as Bonnell would come, as Davies held on for a 13-7 win. There was one nervous moment when Bonnell almost put Davies on his back with a half-nelson with 30 seconds left.

“I think his motor was off today,” Culbertson said. “In the last two weeks, we only had about two days of practice.”

Junior Connor Eubanks (22-15) came in as the No. 3 seed at 120, but got a bad break in how the matches panned out.

In his first match, he pinned Gabe Bauer of Byron at 6:58, but lost in the semifinals to Lucas Sutherland of Dakota.

The problem was that he faced off in the wrestlebacks against No. 1 seed Simon Rillie (375) of Le-Win. Unfortunately for Eubanks, Rillie was upset in the first round.

Rillie dominated the match with Eubanks, eventually working out his first-round frustrations with a 16-0 technical fall.

The wrestler that beat Rillie lost in the semis to Trapper Hartman of West Carroll, someone Eubanks had beaten twice before. Hartman did lose in the finals to Sutherland but gained a trip to the sectionals.

“Connor is an example of good kids that can’t make it out,” Culbertson said. “It’s hard for Connor to accept knowing he had already beaten Hartman and was seeded higher.”

Mason McKenna (21-20) ran into a difficult weight class at 182. After a first-period pin, he fell to eventual champ and world-class age group weightlifter Eli Dertz of WC by 39-second fall. In the wrestleback semis, No. 2 seed Blake Elder (357) of Byron also pinned McKenna.

No. 8 seed Lane Lindquist lost to a No. 9 seed at 170, but came back in the wrestlebacks to pin the No. 7 and 6 seeds. In his second wrestleback, the

Linquist was denied the opportunity to wrestle for third when he lost by first-period fall to Mason Newman of Newman.

At 152, Devonte King-Black had a 36-second pin to advance to the quarterfinals, where he lost on a 39-second pin to eventual champ Brody Ivey.

King-Black then lost in the wrestlebacks.

Nicholas Cain (8-13) went 1-2 with a first-period pin over Gabby Vest of Durand in the 126-pound wrestlebacks. His two losses were to solid opponents from Dakota and Le-Win. Noah Lindquist (10-16), Dimetri Garza (4-9), Noah Johnson (11-13), Wyatt Queckboerner (7-20) lost by pins in their first two matches. At 220, Joel Ludwig was pinned and narrowly lost 6-5 in the wrestlebacks.

“Half of our team is freshmen. This it just tough

for them,” Culbertson said.

Polo finished with five wrestlers hitting the 20-win mark and McKenna has a chance for 30 if he wins two more at the sectional.

Former Polo wrestler Noah Paul won the 132pound weight class for Oregon, one of a tourney-high three champs for the Hawks. Byron also had three champs, with the highlight being a 3-2 win by Tyler Elsbury over Ian Kuehl of Le-Win in a battle of state-ranked heavyweights.

In a closely-contested fight for the team title, Le-Win made it a 3-peat with a 181-10.5 win over rival Dakota. Each had two individual champs.

WC and Newman also had two champs in a balanced slate of numerous state-ranked grapplers on display at Mt. Carroll.

“I wasn’t sure how this would shake out,” L-W coach Kevin Milder said. “It was a meat grinder and we survived.”

The way the game started, it looked like Forreston was going to be the conference champ and No. 1 seed.

Ethan Greenfield (18 points) and Fyock (12 points) shot Forreston to 15-6 and 17-12 leads in a fast-paced first quarter, something the Cardinals hoped to avoid.

“Forreston nailed us early,” Messer said.

That pace continued into the second quarter and the Cardinals were the ones initially thriving, not the run-and-gun Marcos.

“The tough thing about Polo is that if you give it up, they’ll score,” Forreston coach Jonathan Schneiderman said. “Their trap hurt us.”

A backhanded reverse lay-up by Soltow on a feed from Hopkins tied the game for the first time, 24-24, as the second quarter came to an end.

“Soltow made some tough shots and most were challenged,” Schneiderman said. “I was happy with how Greenfield stepped up for us.”

The sophomore guard led his team with 18 points and wasn’t afraid to put up the ball in a pressure cooker of 1,000 fans in attendance and with Polo playing some of its best defense of the year.

“It was all about team defense for us,” Soltow said.

Fyock, who broke coach Schneider-

man’s scool 3-point shooting record at the South Beloit MLK Tourney, was ‘held’ to 12 points.

“Credit to (Lucas) Hammond and Soltow for working through screens to get Fyock into tough shots,” Messer said. “He’s like a version of Reggie Miller. On that last play, it was an allout blitz on him and backside help on the inside. His shot was too close for comfort for me.”

One player that Polo had a hard time covering was Hayden Singley, who was also in double figures with 10 points.

In the third quarter, he had six straight Cardinal points, all on baskets from down low.

A botched Polo rebound that went out-of-bounds allowed Forreston a third possession and Singley made the Marcos pay with another score and 35-29 Cardinal lead.

Polo took its first lead of the game, 39-37 on a Soltow putback after an offensive rebound, forcing Schneiderman to call a time out with 5:12 left in the game. Coming out of the break, Greenfield briefly got the lead back with a 3-pointer, but Polo would take back the lead and never give it up.

Forreston’s man in the middle, 6-foot-3 Mitchell Heinz, who neutralized Marco center Justin Young in both contests, made a basket to close his team to within 47-46 in the final minute.

It was single free throws by Soltow and Wells that made up the 2-point differential in the final minute. Young had earlier went 2-for-2 from the line in the fourth quarter for two other key points.

“This game was a tough learning experience for us,” Schneiderman said.

Great crowd atmosphere present at two events I n terms of crowd atmosphere, it was a toss up Saturday between the gyms at Mt. Carroll for the 1A wrestling regional and at Forreston for the boys basketball game with Polo.

Other than running on the Joe Stengel Trail earlier in the day, those two gyms were where I spent the majority of my time on Saturday.

The fans at both places were into the action on the mats and courts big time and it was probably a welcome relief to see live sports after a week of hibernation from the weather.

How tough was the competition at the West Carroll 1A Wrestling Regional?

Other than 132 and 182 pounds, there was at least one top six stateranked wrestler at each weight class and in some cases more than one.

Chase Clark, of Oregon, was ranked No. 6 in the state at 145, but could only garner a No. 4 seed in the 152-pound weight class at the regional.

On top of that, there was a sub plot of Lena-Winslow/Stockton and Dakota fighting it out for the team

The last time someone other than those two schools won the regional was is 2011 and that is a bit misleading as they were in two separate regionals.

Contrast the WC regional with the one at Aurora, where the Aurora Christian team only lost one match the entire tournament. I know AC is good, but the rest of the competition was extremely mediocre to bad.

Most weight classes had five or less in them at Aurora. Next year, 1A wrestling enrollment will be raised from 647 to 788. That will be a positive in providing satisfactory competitions statewide.

A big change in this area might be Dixon (742 enrollment this year) dropping down to 1A. The Dukes just won a 2A regional and would really strengthen the 1A

sectional.

It was good to see Oregon wrestling making strides in regaining its prowess as one of the big dogs in the area.

Their three regional champs won in dominating fashion and they will be among the major players at a stacked Byron sectional.

Credit Strite for Effort Bowling doesn’t get as much publicity as basketball and wrestling in the winter, but credit needs to go to Austin Strite as he wrapped up his career at Oregon.

Bowling is quite stringent in handing out state medals, with only the top 12 making the cut. Contrast that with track that gives nine places for 18 different events and has three classes.

For Strite to finish close to the top50 downstate in a 1-class system two years in a row is very impressive.

Marcos vs. Cardinals Fun It was fun watching the Forreston and Polo go at it in boys basketball Saturday night and as Braiden

Soltow described it – “an awesome atmosphere.”

It’s also unique seeing kids from two different teams chatting with each in during the game.

What else would you expect from friends from nearby towns?

In looking over records that feed into the sub-sectionals, those two teams are the only ones with a decent record and should be runaway No. 1 and 2 seeds. The next best are probably Aquin and Dakota at about .500.

The other sub-sectional will have at least six teams approaching 20 wins. The worst team in that grouping, Orangeville at 4-15, beat Aquin last week.

Remember though, Aquin only lost to Polo 75-72 back in December.

Unless Aquin puts a winning streak together the remainder of the season, their 8-year streak of 20-win seasons will be over and Polo will take over supremacy on that.

If Polo can close out the regular season without a loss and win a regional, that will set a school record of 28 wins. A major roadblock is this Saturday against Milledgeville.

The Oregon VFW, 1310 W. Washington St. (Ill. 64), Oregon, will celebrate Sweethearts Day on Saturday, Feb. 16 with an evening of food and entertainment.

Byron Forest Preserve is offering winter events Winter Night Hike – Saturday, Feb. 16 Byron Forest Preserve District Assistant Superintendent of Education, Janet Dahlberg will lead a winter night hike at the Jarrett Prairie Nature Preserve on Saturday, Feb. 16 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

“Experience the winter woods and prairie at night. This is a beautiful time of the year to be out in the dark and we will likely see owls, deer and maybe hear coyotes in the distance,” said Mark Herman, superintendent of recreation.

Participants should meet at the Jarrett Prairie Center located at 7993 North River Road in Byron. “Dress for the weather. We will warm up afterwards with hot chocolate,” said Herman.

Restoring Soil Habitats Lecture - Feb. 17 The Byron Forest Preserve District will be offering the second of

their free 2019 Winter Lecture Series on Sunday, Feb. 17 beginning at 2 p.m. at the Jarrett Prairie Center Museum located at 7993 North River Road in Byron.

The program is free and no advance registration is required.

Dr. Elizabeth Bach, The Nature Conservancy’s Nachusa Grasslands Ecosystem Restoration Scientist, will discuss the importance of understanding soil biodiversity.

People and the planet face several environmental challenges now and in the near future. Soil biodiversity is foundational to ecosystem services and functions. Soils help with carbon and nitrogen cycling, water filtering and storage, wildlife habitat, and climate change mitigation.

Yet, soil biodiversity is rarely considered explicitly in land management approaches to improve ecosystem functioning.

In her talk, Bach will share how soil micro-habitats and microbial communities contribute to ecosystem restoration in the tallgrass prairie region, and how that fits into the larger picture of sustaining nature for future generations.

Take a walk through prairies with Wild Ones

Quilt guild to meet Feb. 18

Take a break from winter and attend the Wild Ones meeting on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. at Rock Valley College in the Physical Education Center PEC0110 (lower level), 3301 N. Mulford Rd. Rockford.

John and Joyce Mori, who both hold PhDs, will take participants on a photographic walk through various prairies, revealing their beauty through close-up photography.

Both plants and their visiting insects will be featured. The emphasis is on the beauty, delicacy, and uniqueness found on prairies.

John has always been interested in nature and has been taking photos of natural subjects for 50 years.

While living near Peoria he and his wife Joyce became interested in prairies.

For three years they completed insect surveys on Illinois prairies for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources which included photography.

Upon moving to Rockford they were impressed by the quality and variety of prairies carefully maintained by the Winnebago County Forest Preserve District.

They began to explore prairies in northern and central Illinois and to use close-up photography to illustrate the beauty and wonder of these prairies.

Both John and Joyce take the photos, create the presentations, and present them to local nature groups.

The Country Crossroads Quilt Guild will offer a workshop on Monday, Feb.18 at 1 p.m. at the Forreston Grove Church, 7246 Freeport Rd., Forreston.

The workshop will be Summer Blooms, a cotton and wool project.

The Lee County Office of Emergency Management and Ogle County Emergency Management Agency will host a weather spotter training presented by the National Weather Service on Thursday, Feb. 21 at Sauk Valley Community College, 173 IL Rte. 2, Dixon in room 1K04.

She was born on March 17, 1960 in Dayton, Ohio, the daughter of Jimmy and Diane (Bechtold) Utley. Married to Timm Carlson April 10, 1981 in Oregon.

Jill was a 1978 graduate of Oregon High School and also a graduate of Rock Valley Community College.

She retired in December of 2016 from the Illinois Secretary of State Department of Motor Vehicles as the Oregon Facility Manager.

Jill was Mt. Morris Cub Scouts Committee Chairwoman, a member of the Mt. Morris Let Freedom Ring Committee, and a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Timm Carlson, of Mt. Morris; sons, Tyler

LaVere “Fuzz” Watson, 93, of Mt. Morris, died on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019 at KSB Hospital, Dixon.

LaVere was born on Aug. 29, 1925 to William and Eva (Newcomer) Watson in Forreston.

He graduated from Mt. Morris High School in the Class of 1942.

LaVere served in the U.S. Army and was a proud World War II veteran. LaVere married Mary Jane Carlson on July 31, 1955 in Grand Detour.

He was a farmer for most of his life and was a welder for Etnyre and Woods in Oregon for many years.

LaVere was an avid fisherman who

was always willing and enjoyed teaching others the joy of fishing.

He was an honest and just man who believed in the power of prayer and the grace of God. LaVere is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Watson; son, James (Peggy) Watson, of Mt. Morris; 8 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

LaVere is predeceased by his parents, one sister, and son, John.

No services are planned at this time.

Cremation rites have been accorded with Finch Funeral Home, 405 E. Hitt St., Mt. Morris.

She was born on July 7, 1925 the daughter of Leland and Cardine Anna (Kappenman) Kendel.

Vera graduated from Rochelle High School in 1942.

She married Willis A. Davison on Dec. 10, 1950 in Mt. Morris. He preceded her in death in 2001.

Vera was a former member of the Chana United Methodist Church.

She liked to knit, crochet, and do puzzles. Her favorite snack was Cheetos.

She loved to play bingo and when she won she would share her prizes with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
