Value of Byron Station reduced by $43M Byron Schools will lose $1M in tax dollars

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com A Byron school official said the district will take a $1 million hit due to the Ogle County Board of Review’s decision last week to reduce the assessment of Exelon’s Byron Generating Station by $43 million.

“We’re going to lose a million dollars in our Education Fund,” said school board president Carol Nauman.

After hearing almost two hours of arguments Jan. 17 between Exelon’s and the school district’s attorneys over the value of the nuclear plant and a brief discussion among themselves, the three-member BOR voted unanimously to lower the assessment set last fall at $546 million by now-retired Supervisor of Assessments Jim Harrison to $503 million.

Byron Superintendent Buster Barton agreed with Nauman. “Clearly, we’re a little disappointed,” he said.

He said school officials have no plan to deal with the loss of revenue.

Ogle County Board Chairman Kim Gouker, of Byron, was also less than pleased with the BOR’s decision.

“It won’t impact us as much as it will the Byron School District, but it will impact us,” he said. “I’m disappointed as well, but more clearly I had a lot of confidence in Mr. Harrison’s assessment.

I don’t think it [the BOR’s] is as fair a value as he set.”

An Exelon official, however, said the utility’s real estate tax bill is too high.

“Exelon remains committed to paying its fair share of taxes and supporting the greater Byron community through corporate contributions, employee donations, and volunteerism,” said Paul Dempsey, Byron Station Communications Manager. “Exelon is of the opinion that the more than $36 million in property taxes it pays each year for Byron Station is far in excess of its fair share based on a reasonable assessment of value.”

Last year Exelon’s tax bill for Byron Station totaled more than $37.8 million, with $21.2 million of that going to the school district.

The school district’s attorney Stuart Whitt, from Whitt Law LLC, Aurora, said Exelon provides 76 percent of the school district’s revenue.

“As goes the Byron Station, so goes the community and Byron School District,” he said.

The county received $4.2 million is taxes from the plant last year.

Ogle County is trashing its recycling program and will close drop-off locations in five cities because the cost has become unsustainable.

Skyrocketing container hauling costs, contamination in the recycling stream, U.S. trade tariffs and the Chinese ban on importing U.S. recyclables contributed to the county’s decision to end the program in May. “This has been a very difficult decision for us as we know how popular the program is, and that it is the only outlet for recycling for many county residents,” said Steve Rypkema, director of the county’s solid waste management department.

“We have kept this program going for over 24 years and feel terrible

that it will end in May. “Between the contamination and dumping problems at the sites and increasing costs, we have no choice.”

The decision closes recycling stations in Byron, Oregon, Forreston, Monroe Center, and Rochelle.

The recycling drop-off bins in Polo, however, will not be affected because that program is operated

by Moring Disposal, Inc., Forreston, rather than through the county..

Residents in unincorporated areas in the county are being asked to contact their local waste hauler to see if curbside recycling is available, and if not, to encourage the hauler to provide the service.

The end of the program will not affect curbside recycling services in other communities.

Last year, the program took in 806 tons of recyclables, and has totaled about 18,800 tons, or nearly 37.6 million pounds, since 1994.

The program cost nearly $65,000 in 2018, a 17 percent price increase, and the county’s contract with Northern

BOR Chairman Joe Yockey, of Stillman Valley, said he believes Exelon’s appraisal is too low and the school district’s is too high.

“We’re trying to make a fair assessment for the county,” he said.

The current of assessment of Exelon’s Braidwood Generating Station, a “twin” of the Byron plant, apparently played a role in that decision.

Yockey said that Braidwood Generating Station is assessed at $460 million for 2018, which is scheduled to increase to $465 million in 2019 and $470 million in 2020.

The county went out for bids in the fall for a new contract, only one company was interested, and it would have been a 135 percent cost increase, to $163,000.

“That increase was just too much, and was more than the department had budgeted for the program, so the bid was rejected,” Rypkema

The Byron plant’s assessment had been set at $546 since 2016.

BOR member Mitch Montgomery, of Rochelle, made the motion to lower the plant’s value to $503,088,717, and Paula Diehl, of Mt. Morris, seconded it. All three voted yes.

“A $40 million reduction would be a step to reach an agreement,” Yockey said after the vote.

The value of the plant has frequently been disputed throughout the history of the facility.

Exelon officials have appealed the BOR decisions each year since 2012 to the Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board.

Just before Christmas, Rypkema said someone dumped 25 tires outside of the Rochelle station, and there’s also been issues with people dumping things like diapers, electronics, ash, paint cans, furniture, and household trash.

How it’s figured Exelon sets the current fair market value of Byron Station at $1.175 billion, while former Ogle County Supervisor of Assessments Jim Harrison put it at $3.4 billion.

Usually the assessed value of real estate is one-third of its fair market value.

However, a 1998 agreement between ComEd, then owner of Byron Station, and the 11 affected taxing bodies dictates that only 48.15 percent of the fair market value will be used in determining the assessed value of the nuclear plant. the 2012 appeal almost three years ago but has not yet made a decision.

No hearings have been set for the 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017 appeals to PTAB. During arguments, Moritz said he expects PTAB to make its decision on the 2012 appeal in the next

three to four months.

He urged the BOR to lower the assessment so that when PTAB makes its ruling the difference will be smaller between the actual assessment and their number.

Whitt, however, disagreed. “Let PTAB decide and we’ll see where the chips fall,” he said.

Every week a coach will be asked to pick an athlete on their team they consider to be Athlete of the Week material.

This week Coach Culbertson, who has a selection of athletes from three different towns at his disposal, was asked to elect a student athlete.

His choice was Mason McKenna, the only senior on the wrestling team Alyssa Wakenight: “What is this athlete’s strongest asset?”

Coach Culbertson: “His character, both on and off the matt.”

A: “How does this athlete affect the rest of the team?”

C: “He is one of the captains, the only senior, and he leads by example with hard work.”

A: “How has he grown as an athlete?”

C: “He started wrestling his Junior year as a first timer very late to the game. Since then he has gone from zero to hero with a first place win at the Kewanee Invitational.”

A: “How do you think you personally

influence the athlete?”

C: “As a coach I would like to think I motivate them during practices and meets, but it is really up to the individual.”

A: “What do you think you think your coaching will teach this athlete later on in life?”

C: “Wrestling teaches good work ethic and an ability to overcome adversity, and if you can make it through wrestling practice you can make it through anything in life.”

Alyssa Wakenight: “What’s your favorite thing about wrestling” Mason McKenna: “I can’t choose just one thing.”

A: “What will wrestling teach you later on in life?”

M: “I’d say wrestling teaches you to overcome adversity.”

A: “What’s it like being the only senior on the team?”

M: “I don’t mind being the only senior because I get along well with my team, and I am able to set a good example for the younger kids.”

“What in the world is a wall going to accomplish? Seriously.”

Some who couldn’t care less “I couldn’t care less.”

“I don’t really care, build it or not.”

And some who felt passionately about the whole ordeal “The shutdown is a result of a massive hissy-fit thrown by the one and only Donald Trump. When he said that he could “Make America Great Again,” he also said he wouldn’t compromise.

However, our government is supposed to run on compromise. This doesn’t seem to be something that Trump, a businessman, understands

Trump’s inexperience as a politician certainly shows with this government shutdown.”

So, as you can see the very students and staff here at PCHS have the same and more in-depth opinions of the shutdown and wall as the rest of the American people.

Either they don’t quite care enough to have an actual opinion.

They respect and like the idea of the wall and hope that it happens sometime soon, feeling as though that will solve all problems.

And those who feel as though the wall is a ridiculous idea and that no problems nor will any solutions come out of the wall being built, and that the shutdown is a sad excuse for part of a solution to getting what the President truly wants and only cares about. THE WALL. —Ally Simpson

Marcos teams back in competition after break Marco sporting teams are back at it after a lengthy Christmas break and a week filled with studies and exams.

To start, the Polo Academic Team went up against the Eastland Academic Team in Lanark on Monday.

The Marcos tried their best to hold on, but couldn’t pull through in the end.

On Tuesday, the Misscardacos took on the Princeton Tigers in a very close wrestling meet.

Polo started off strong, winning the first few matches, but in the end, the Tigers came out on top winning 39-32.

Also on Tuesday, the Girls Basketball Team played against Milledgeville, and both Fresh/Soph and Varsity won.

Wednesday, the Boys Basketball Team showed up to Amboy and showed out as well!

The Fresh/Soph team pulled away with a monster victory of 69-17, and the varsity fought their way to an 80-60 win over the Clippers.

Then, on Thursday, the Lady Marcos were back at home to play against conference rival the Forreston Cardinals.

It was a very special night for Polo, as the band, student section, fans, and even the players wore their teal shirts in support of Kate Marschang.

Fresh/Soph won their game with a score of 40-36. Varsity, while pushing themselves all game, battled until the end.

Unfortunately, the Lady Marcos fell short of a win, scoring 34 to Forreston’s 53.

Friday, because of a snowstorm, the wrestling meet that had been planned was canceled.

As of midnight on Saturday, December 22nd 2018 President Trump decided to shut down the government and stop pay for all federal government employees in order to reach an agreement with the Democrats and/ or Republicans on the wall between Mexico and the United States.

So, being curious as to how everyone else around us feels we asked the people. We received comments of all magnitudes.

Cold winter days get rid of summertime bugs “Below zero” are unwelcome words

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator Polo Historical Society This morning when I heard the words “below zero” I knew we were in for a cold, cold day.

But lately I heard someone remark that if we did not have some really cold weather, we would have all sorts of insects this summer. So today we are getting rid of next summer’s bug bites.

Since it was Everett Brown’s funeral and burial would be at the Brick Church, I knew to wear my heaviest jacket and my long winter coat.

Susan would be picking us up and I knew the stories of Eagle Point would be flowing before the day was over. We will miss those days of visiting with him.

Everett had stopped by last fall when Susan was here and they got

By Karen Merlak There has been so much activity outside between the several inches of snow that fell and the bright moon shining at night. There are so many wonders in creation.

We pray to be kept safe during the winter season while we watch His creation in action. God is so good.

This morning in church, we were greeted by June Schafer. Rev. Charlotte Hoppe gave a thoughtful message on tilling as we get ready to grow our church.

Charlotte shared a story about gardens for our youth, Kaitlyn, Laura, Harper, and Jasmine.

After church, we enjoyed a potluck dinner, with a small group in attendance.

Polo Historical Society to meet Betty Obendorf will speak on using quilts to send messages on the Underground Railroad at the Polo Historical Society meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at the Polo Public Library.

The business meeting is at 6:30 p.m. and the program begins at 7 p.m.

The public is invited to attend. Refreshments will be served following the program. to laughing at the Debbie, Connie, Susan stories that day.

It was a good thing I did not know about all the exploring the Eagle Point kids did in those days.

We did not worry and simply felt that the “good Lord” looked out for them as they tromped around the creek and the barn yards.

Everett did mention the day he looked out and saw three little girls climbing up the silo and he moved rather quickly on that escapade.

So following the funeral some of us Eagle Pointers sat and visited once more.

We talked of coming into Polo to shop at several grocery stores, drug stores, clothing stores, and how they are all gone. People were

drawn to the big stores in nearby towns.

Now we rarely shop in those big stores but instead use our fingers and order on line. Those big stores are a thing of the past and they are closing one by one.

In Polo we are excited about getting one new grocery store after 10 years of being without.

Polo’s new grocery store sign, on a truck, was just going through the intersection at Mt. Carroll.

It is a beautiful sign and stands E v e r y out as you drive by. thing is top of the line and I am ready for shopping in Polo.

This past Tuesday evening, our PEO Chapter DW met at the beautiful home of Gina Cole for our regular meeting.

Gina’s co-host was her mother, Diane Kuhns and our program was given by Julie Sanders. Julie shared some interesting facts about our seven founders.

This year marks the 150th birthday of PEO. The sisterhood started with just seven young women and over the years has helped countless women pursue their dreams of education.

I am so honored to join with my sisters in this year of celebration.

Joining us from Pine Creek were Jean Cunningham, Beverly Coffman, Maggie Henning, Vicki Hay, and Lisa Coffman.

After our fun and educational program, we enjoyed dessert and visiting with a large group.

Our church has sponsored the Luther Nordic Choir who will be performing a concert at St. Paul Luther-

A freewill offering will be taken to benefit area organizations. We hope you will join us for a night of outstanding music.

Pine Creek Christian Church is joining with Faith Discovery Church for the monthly Our Table Free Community Meal on Monday, Jan. 28 starting at 5:30 p.m. at Faith United Methodist Church.

We hope you will come warm up with a hot dinner and wonderful fellowship.

While the weather is unbelievably cold outside, my thoughts turn to warmer days. Long, hot afternoons spent at the pool were a highlight in my younger days.

One particular time, I finally got up the courage to jump off the diving board.

I climbed the stairs, walked to the end of the board. Still scared, the lifeguard got into the pool to encourage me to jump.

Looking down into the water, I couldn’t do it. I turned around, walked off the board, down the stairs, and I have never jumped off a diving

On Wednesday, Feb. 6 Polo Historical Society will be having its meeting at the library at 7 p.m. I will be giving the program.

We will be looking at using quilts as a message on the Underground Railroad. It is Black History Month and we will hear about the book “Hidden In Plain View.”

The book was written in 1999, and there is still controversy over this whole idea.

We will have a board meeting at 6:30 and there will be refreshments following the meeting. Come join us at the library.

During my life, I have had many chances to jump and I have. I have jumped with willing abandon because I trust my lifeguard.

Knowing that I have Jesus by my side to help me when I feel like I’m drowning or to cheer me on as I gracefully make my way to the surface.

One of the great things about being a Christian is the comfort we find in Jesus. It comes from getting to know and trust Him each and every day.

He is with us for all of the big and small moments.

Recently, I started climbing the ladder once again. With legs shaking, I have headed out to the end of the diving board.

Now, I am standing at the edge, my toes hanging over the end. It’s a bit scary, but I am calmed by His presence. I know He is with me. And now, it’s time to jump.

ICF Conservation Achievement Scholarships are available for high school seniors

Applications are now being accepted by the Illinois Conservation Foundation (ICF) for the 2019 Conservation Achievement Scholarship program.

The ICF annually awards scholarships to outstanding high school seniors in Illinois who demonstrate effective, voluntary, long-term dedication to the preservation, protection or enhancement of the state’s natural resources.

Up to three scholarships of $2,000 each are available for the current school year.

“The ICF’s Conservation

Achievement Scholarship program helps further the education of young people who have shown interest in being our future conservation leaders,” said Wayne Rosenthal, chairman of the Illinois Conservation Foundation Board of Directors and Director of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. “The scholarships help reward a commitment to natural resources stewardship by students from throughout Illinois.”

The ICF Conservation Achievement Scholarships have been awarded since 2005. Applicants

must be an Illinois resident and a senior in an Illinois high school.

Applications must be received by the ICF by March 15, 2019.

The Pinecrest Grove Theater will host a special February First Fridays featuring musicians from northern Illinois on Friday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m.

The drawing for musician’s time slots will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The musical format will provide 15-plus minutes for each performer.

After the individual performances, all of the musicians will (time permitting) gather on stage for a jam session to wrap up the evening’s festivities Musicians from across northern Illinois, and often neighboring states, appear on a regular basis.

The music often described as new folk or Americana is varied and includes country, bluegrass, blues, folk, mountain soul, gospel, soft rock, and eclectic mixes of all of the above.

The Lee County Office of Emergency Management and Ogle County Emergency Management Agency will host a weather spotter training presented by the National Weather Service on Thursday, Feb. 21 at Sauk Valley Community College, 173 IL Rte. 2, Dixon in room 1K04.

The class begins at 6:30 p.m. and will last approximately an hour and a half.

The training consists of a slide and video program, which teaches about severe storm structure, and how to identify cloud features and other environmental clues to identify severe storms and tornadoes.

of issuing severe weather instructions to employees to understand or refresh on signs of approaching severe weather.

Event to raise funds for music scholarships Aireloom Music Studio and friends will put on a musical variety show titled “A Little Bit of Everything” on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Pinecrest Grove Community Theatre, Mt. Morris.

The evening will include live music, “edutainment,” and audience participation.

This year’s theme is “old-timey” radio ads.

All proceeds will benefit the music scholarship fund.

Musical instruments and many other items will be raffled.

Some “pretty crazy” characters

will be interviewed, too.

Local celebrities such as Mother Slightly Superior and Sister Mary Lawrence will be joining in as well.

Mary Ley is show’s director, Larry Ubben will be the emcee, Jeff Bold will man the stage lights, and the actors all have their acts together.

This project raises money for students who can’t afford to take lessons. The goal is to put an instrument in every hand, and music in every heart.

“Wow,” said Rahn after being told that stat. “We usually have 15-20 a game.”

A stat that was not pleasing to Grobe was Polo only getting off 17 shots in the first half.

“You can’t be having that,” he said.

Polo was helped by the astute passing by Lizzy Stamm in the first half.

Three times, she found either Marah Blake or Becca Wagner inside with long passes for baskets.

“That’s a senior with good court sense that knows the game,” Grobe said.

Holding a 43-32 midway through the fourth quarter, Forreston went into a slow-down spread.

“That wasn’t a stall,” Rahn said.

Coming back from a 23-16 halftime deficit, the Polo girls basketball team roared back to take a 31-29 lead over Forreston with the third quarter winding down.

That was a close as the Marcos would taste to a possible upset, as Forreston went on 24-3 run to win 53-24 in NUIC play on Jan. 17.

“For a young team with their leader (injured Alex Dusing) out, I’m very impressed with Polo,” Forreston coach Brian Rahn said.

“They killed us on the glass (3226 rebounding advantage) and were more aggressive than us. I’m happy we found a way to win.”

A pair of free throws by Kara Erdmann and a basket by Alexus Houston gave the lead back to the Cardinals as the quarter came to an end.

In the fourth quarter, Kylee Kloster, who Rahn praised for coming off the bench for scoring and rebounding, made it 35-31 off an offensive rebound and the Cardinals never looked back the rest of the way.

Meanwhile, Polo struggled with six turnovers and 11 missed shots out of 12 after its short-lived lead.

“I think we had three sophomores and two freshmen in,” Polo coach Jeff Grobe said. “Our inexperience caught up with us.”

It was a sophomore that gave Polo a spark. Guard Mallory Patterson nailed back-to-back 3-pointers and another baskets off her own rebound in the midst of players much taller than her for 8 third-quarter points.

“She’s been in a slump and hesitant to shoot,” Grobe said. “I’m glad to see her put the ball up. She’s doing exactly what’s asked of her.”

Even with Patterson doing half (17) of her team’s scoring, it was Houston taking game high honors with 19 points. Houston, another guard, made her presence felt all night on both offense and defense.

“She goes hard all the time,” Rahn said. “Our entire team had quickness and energy on defense and were able to create turnovers.”

BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@saukvalley.com For a little while on Jan. 16, it looked like the third time was going to be the charm for the Amboy boys basketball team against Polo.

The Marcos were having none of that.

Polo fended off an early run by the Clippers with a run of their own, and pulled away for an 80-60 win in Amboy.

It was third win for the Marcos over Amboy, with the others being at the AFC and Eastland tournaments.

The Clippers (3-18, 1-6 NUIC East) gave their home fans something to cheer about with a 9-0 run that tied the game at 19-19 just 2 minutes into the second quarter.

Logan Whelchel began the run with a 3, then Mitchell McLaughlin hit two in a row from the top of the key to tie it up.

“A few years ago, we did get them our third time here,” McLaughlin said, “so we were hoping the same was happening. We were hitting shots early, but we needed to keep hitting shots.”

Polo (19-3, 5-1) responded with a 15-2 run over the next 4 minutes, and most of the damage was done inside.

Justin Young muscled his way in the paint for three buckets to ignite the surge, and it was capped when Brady Webb scored on a putback of a missed layup by Tucker Mumford.

Polo coach Matt Messer noted his team changed its attack during that key stretch.

“Not only did we pound the ball inside, but the offense that we ran got our guards going downhill toward the rim,” Messer said. “The key, though, was defensively. We locked back in defensively and got stops. I think they scored 11 points in 2 minutes, and only scored three points for the next 5-something.

That was the key: lock them down and then attack the glass.”

The Marcos’ biggest lead was 27 points (66-39) after a basket from Jace Coffey at the 6:38 mark of the fourth quarter.

Amboy was able to keep it from becoming a mercy-rule game, however, due in large part to sophomore guard Preston Henkel.

McLaughlin led the Clippers with 15 points, while Hunter Zimmerly and Whelchel added nine each. Zimmerly also collected a game-high 11 rebounds.

Polo had five players in double figures, led by Webb with 19 points.

He was backed by Braiden Soltow with 13, Coffey with 12, Young with 11, and Lane Hopkins with 10.

Balanced scoring and a mere seven turnovers while pushing the pace is a recipe the Marcos would like to duplicate.

“It’s always important for us to take care of the ball,” Webb said.

“After the Forreston loss, we knew we had to push the pace, but also be smart with the ball. I thought we did a good job of that tonight.”

The Cardinals made an impressive 13-of-16 in the final part of the game to seal the win.

“That’s been there for us all year,” Rahn said. “We’ve been consistent at around 65 percent.”

Forreston moves to 7-12 on the year and Polo at 5-15.

“We got a tough schedule coming up,” Grobe said. “All we can do is get them ready. They don’t quit. We saw that tonight.”

The Marcos host AFC Friday and Durand the following Thursday, wrapping up regular season action.

Regional decline in population has repercussions L

ast week, mention was made of Oregon’s high school enrollment dipping under 400.

In looking at census figures from 2010 to 2017, every single city and village (36 total) in the Sauk Valley Media area declined in population.

The counties of Carroll, Ogle, Whiteside, Lee and Bureau Valley lost nearly 10,000 residents in that time period. Besides not having enough kids to fill out sports teams, it’s become more and more difficult to find workers.

High school sports are a luxury. Finding mechanics, plumbers, bricklayers, carpenters, truck drivers or the multitude of other trades is a more serious concern.

Young people are not entering these fields as much and we face many uncertainties from such a shortage of both skilled and unskilled workers.

A common lament from kids not out for a sport is that they need or wan to get a job instead. Often they are chastised, being told to enjoy their youth – there would be plenty of time for work later.

Maybe we should start taking a different tack and encourage them to enter the work force, because they

are desperately needed.

In the meantime, it might not hurt to bone up on the old “Reader’s Digest How to Fix It” manuals in case trades people can be found to do repairs.

Did you know that fall sports used to start much later than they do now and the main reason was to allow boys to do seasonal farm chores?

Still, there was an overlap of work and play.

Many an old-timer can share stories of baling hay, doing field work or milking cows and then reporting to football practice. For some, it may have been easier than the farm work they were doing.

I doubt if that breed of kid exists much anymore.

Another problem now compared to before is how time-consuming sports are. For kids that partake in club sports, along with the demands of high-school summer practices,

that is practically a job in itself.

IHSA by the Numbers

The IHSA recently released a financial audit of itself. Like any financial report, lots of boring information in it, but it was interesting to see the revenue and expenses for each sport and activity.

As expected, it was boys basketball and football far ahead of anything else.

The state basketball tournament took in $1,921,381 for fiscal year 2018.

Expenses were $951,800, for a profit of $969,581.

Football’s revenues were $1,439,526, with expenses of $721,721.

That generated $717,794 back to the IHSA’s coffers.

The next highest profit generator was baseball with a 162K return.

Both wrestling and baseball generate close to a half million in revenue, but wrestling only returns $41K, probably due to the high rent of Assembly Hall for the state meet.

Putting on two separate (individual and dual) tournaments also has to be a costly endeavor for wrestling.

Volleyball earned $142K off 533K of revenue as the highest-ranking girls sports. Girls basketball takes

in the most revenue at $691K, but its expenses total $711K, creating a $26K loss.

Both use Redbird Arena in Normal for their state finals and basketball also uses college campuses for some of its sectionals, whereas volleyball is strictly high school come sectionals.

Still, a difference of around $325K more to run basketball seems high.

Certainly there has to be other factors.

I’d be tempted to ask the IHSA about this and other questions regarding revenues and expenditures in all sports. However, they are a busy organization this time of year and it would probably be more polite to wait until summer to query them.

Collectively, boys sports earn $1,907,538 in profit, while the girls earn $42,441, due in large part to attendance.

As far as activities, competitive cheerleading and dance combine for a tidy profit of $139K. The activity that costs the IHSA more than any other to put on is speech. It takes in 52K, but has expenses of 191K, for the largest loss of any sport or activity.

The packages were wrapped beautifully and graciously received by the parents of 70-plus children.

Habitat for Humanity of Ogle County gets a $15,000 grant Habitat for Humanity of Ogle County, Inc. recently received a $ 15,000 grant from the Community Grants Program of the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois with support from the Dr. Louis & Violet Rubin Fund for its 2019 new home build in Rochelle.

A $12,000 grant from CFNI last year played a key part in what HFHOC accomplished in 2018, HFHOC Executive Director Vanessa White-Broome said.

“In large part due to a grant award from the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois, our Habitat affiliate was not only able to build a new three-bedroom home in Rochelle for a family of five, but was also able to serve three other families in Ogle County. Two of those families reside in Polo and the other in Hillcrest,” she said.

“We are very excited to share this news with everyone in Ogle County, and are very appreciative to the Board of Trustees of the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois, as well as countless other individuals and businesses in the area who have supported our organization in one way or another,” she said.

“This support has enabled us to serve a total of four families in 2018 who have attained their dream of decent, affordable housing,” she said.

The 2018-19 grant funds received in December 2018 from the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois will assist Habitat in continuing to serve families and fulfill our mission, WhiteBroome said.

4-H CLUB NEWS Carefree 4-H holds meeting SUBMITTED BY MOLLY ZIEGLER Carefree 4-H Club Member The Carefree 4H club met on Dec. 10. At this meeting we discussed our community service project that we will resume in January.

We talked about the officer training that was recently held

and several of our officers attended.

We are working on our blue sheet goals, and we are participating in a federation fundraiser.

Levi Eden is organizing a bowling activity for the club in January. We celebrated Grace Mongan’s and Mason Zabran’s birthdays and had our Christmas potluck. We wrapped our gifts for the family we adopted at Hope House.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following arrests.

Jan. 11 Deputies responded at 1:40 a.m. to a two-vehicle accident on I-39 at mile marker 108.

A northbound car driven by Steven Nosko, 56, of Byron, struck the rear of a semi-trailer.

The semi truck, driven by Jimmy Johnson, 51, of Chicago, was experiencing power failure, disabling the trailer lights and attempted to pull off of the roadway just prior to the collision.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene by Maggio’s Towing.

Nosko was transported to Swedish American Hospital for minor injuries.

Jan. 14 Darrin K. Akers, 48, of Rockford, was arrested at 7:07 p.m. at 105 S. Rural Rd., Stillman Valley, for driving while license suspended and transported to the Ogle County Jail where he remained in lieu of bond.

Jan. 15 Deputies responded to a one-vehicle accident with injuries at 11 a.m. in the 10,000 block of North Illinois 2.

A car driven by Kathleen M. Garcia, 52, of Oregon was northbound and drifted across the roadway, for unknown reasons at this time, entered the ditch on the west side of the roadway, and struck a tree.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident, and Garcia was the sole occupant of hers.

Garcia was extricated from the vehicle by Byron Fire and Ambulance and transported to Swedish American Hospi-

tal for her injuries.

She was issued a civil citation for possession of cannabis, less than 10 grams.

Matthew Merrit, 25, of Mt. Morris, was arrested on outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He was held in the Ogle County Jail on a $206 bond pending a court appearance.

Ryan Rush, 34, of Byron, was arrested on outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He was held in the Ogle County jail on a $334 bond pending a court appearance.

Joseph Stafford, 55, of Aurora, was arrested on outstanding Ogle County warrant for escape. He was held in the Ogle County Jail on a $50,000 (10%) bond pending a court appearance.

Thomas Price, 33, of Rockford, was arrested on outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He was held in the Ogle County Jail on a $5,084 bond pending a court appearance.

Jonathan Wilson, 35, of Whiteside County, was arrested on outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He was held in the Ogle County jail on a $11, 896.90 bond pending a court appearance.

Thomas Kanzler, 23, of Dixon, was arrested on outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He was held in the Ogle County jail on a $281 bond pending a court appearance.

Jan. 18 Christopher Jamieson, 38, of Oregon, was arrested on outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He was held in the Ogle County jail on a $3,506 bond pending a court appearance.

Deputies come upon a single vehicle crash at North Illinois 2 and Mud Creek Road at 12:15 a.m. They determined Kendall Pelt, 46, of Mt Morris, failed to reduce speed to avoid an accident and struck the guardrail on Ill. 2 east of Mud Creek Rd. Pelt was arrested for failure to reduce speed, driving under the influence of alcohol, no valid license, and operating uninsured motor vehicle. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Daniel Diehl, 22, of Polo, was arrested on outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He was held in the Ogle County jail on a $451 bond pending a court appearance.

Jan. 17 Kyle Smith, 27, of Byron, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for leaving the scene. He posted a $3,000 (10%) bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail with a court date of Feb. 8.

Jeffrey Swanson, 48, of Billings, Montana, for was arrested on outstanding Ogle County warrant for theft. He was held in the Ogle County jail on a

Darrius Garcia, 29, of Dixon was arrested at 6:21 a.m. in the 10,000 block of North Illinois 2 for driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol after deputies responded to a report of a vehicle in the ditch. He was also issued a citation for improper lane usage and later released on an I-bond.

Jan. 14 At approximately 8:30 p.m., police took one 16-year-old male juvenile into limited custody for the offense of battery. The juvenile was released into his parent’s custody with a referral to the Ogle County State’s Attorney for review for juvenile delinquency.
