Ariel Foster wins Centennial spelling bee 8th grader Rebecca Ziegler wins her fifth

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Fifth grader Ariel Foster got a big hug from her dad and congratulations all around Jan. 11 after she won the annual spelling bee at Polo’s Centennial Elementary School.

“We’re really proud of her,” said her father Matthew Foster.

Ariel said she was surprised with the win but had practiced almost every day with her mom Sherri, sister, and friends.

She was one of seventeen fifth graders who qualified for the bee and spelled words from bacon to dollop, all pronounced by retired teacher Larry Loomis.

By the end of Round 5, the field was down to just three, Ariel, Nikolas Mummert, and Addisyn Quinlan.

Addisyn dropped out in Round 8, stumbling on the word solely.

Nikolas went first and in Round 13 misspelled garrett, while Ariel successfully tackled ruefully.

To clinch the win, she was required

to spell one more word correctly, and never faltered as she sailed through pennant.

Ariel will compete in the WhitesideLee-Ogle Regional Spelling Bee on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. at Dixon High School.

If she is unable to participate, Nikolas will take her place.

Either one will definitely have to be at his or her best because one of the other competitors will be Rebecca Ziegler, who has won the last four regional bees.

After winning the Aplington Middle School spelling bee on Dec. 18, Rebecca is headed for what could be an unprecedented fifth consecutive regional championship.

The winner of the Regional Bee receives an all-expense paid trip to National Harbor, Maryland, to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee at the end of May. Prizes include Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, Webster’s Third New International Dictionary, Amazon. com gift cards, 2016 United States Mint Proof Set, Encyclopedia Britannica online subscription, medals, and pins.

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Polo’s efforts to correct inadequate storm sewers on the west side of town got a half-million dollar boost last week.

The Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity announced Jan. 10 that the city has been awarded a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant for Public Infrastructure for storm sewer improvements.

According to a press release from the DCEO, the city is one of 28 communities across the state that will receive federal funds totaling $13.2

million.

“These grants will help Illinois’ low-income communities undertake much needed public infrastructure projects such as water, sanitary system and sewer enhancements that become the backbone of future growth and economic development,” the press release read.

City Clerk Sydney Bartelt said Tuesday that the city has not yet received notification that the grant has been awarded.

“That’s awesome news,” she said.

She said the project, estimated to cost $1.1 million, will include running a new storm sewer along Buffalo Street that will connect to existing

Community Development Act of 1974.

Administered nationally by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, DCEO administers the State of Illinois CDBG – Small Cities Program.

State-administered funds are only available to units of general local government (cities, villages, townships and counties).

Municipalities must be 50,000 or less in population and must not be located in an urban county that receives entitlement program funds (42 entitlement communities in Illinois receive their own allocation of CDBG funds).

storm sewers in that area to alleviate flooding after heavy rainfall.

Colden Street and Congress Avenue have especially been affected, she said, with standing water and flooding in the basements of nearby residences and businesses.

Sometimes businesses in the downtown and along Division Avenue (Ill. 26) also experience flooding.

“We’re hoping this will help that, too,” she said.

The city council is in the process of issuing $653,000 in General Obligation Bonds to pay for the project.

The Ogle County Board lifted its moratorium on solar farms last week just long enough to approve five applications and deny three more.

At a special meeting on Jan. 10 the board adopted new regulations for solar farms and then suspended the moratorium until the end of the meeting while it voted on the applications.

The six-month moratorium set last August will now remain in effect until the end of February, when it can be extended.

Dan Terhark, of rural Polo, was one of the property owners whose project was approved.

“We’re relieved the board made a decision,” he said. “There was a lot of public pressure.”

Meeting rooms have been packed for many of the recent board meetings and Zoning Board of Appeals hearings where solar farms were on the agenda.

Several people from the Stillman Valley area spoke out against having the projects so close to their rural subdivisions.

Terhark’s proposed solar farm is at 8248 N. Kishwaukee Rd., near Stillman Valley, on 52.68 acres he says has low fertility and only one near neighbor.

“This piece of land is very conducive to this. Not all of it is,” he said.

“In fact, most of my land won’t be included.”

Besides Terhark’s, the board considered eight other special use applications for solar farms on property zone for agricultural use and followed the ZBA recommendations.

Others approved Wilma Hongsermeier’s 65.78 acres in the 3300 to 3500 block of North Mt. Morris Road; Gary Bocker’s 177.4 acres in the 8225 to 8500 block of West Haldane Road; Bradley J., Donna S., and Erik P. Bauer’s 115.29 acres at 1226 W. Oregon Trail Rd.; and 75.05 acres owned by Larry Roberts, Linda Powell, and Cindy Stauffer on the southwest corner of West Judson and South Union Roads.

The board denied applications from Ronald E. and Carolyn A. Pifkin on 55.3 acres in the 7000 block of East Hales Corner Rd.; Wesley and Kathryn Burandt on 74.02 acres in the 11,000 block of East Big Mound Road; and Curtis R. and Norma L. Freeburg on 153.76 acres in the 6400 block of

The board also approved a request from Ronald Stocking to withdraw his special use application on 146.78 acres in the 7000 block of East Hales Corner Road.

After voting, board chairman Kim Gouker, of Byron, said he doesn’t agree with the current practice of allowing solar farms as a special use on agricultural land.

Instead, he said, the land should be rezoned.

“This is on agricultural property,” he said. “I don’t think a special use is designed to put an industrial project on top of the ground. This needs to be industrial zoning because this is an industrial use.”

After approving three solar farms last summer, the board set the moratorium and appointed an ad hoc committee to develop regulations.

The solar farm applications voted on Jan. 10 were filed prior to or during the moratorium.

The new regulations adopted will apply to the just approved applicants as well as any in the future.

Eight amendments, most of them introduced by board member Benjamin Youman, of Davis Junction, were added to the ad hoc committee’s regulations, making the rules more stringent.

County Board Chairman The amendments dictate any solar farm developer/operator must contribute $100,000 per megawatt to a decommissioning fund to help cover costs when the solar farm is dismantled.

This is in addition to providing a performance bond of 125 percent of estimated decommissioning costs.

Another $100,000 per megawatt will be charged for a disposal fund.

The money will be returned if the developer/operator lives up to the regulations.

Another amendment prohibits siting solar farms within a mile and a half of a municipality if the board or council does not want it there.

Previously, municipal governments could weigh in but their preference was not binding.

Other amendments addressed visual screens, environmental concerns, and enforcement and accountability of the landowners.

Even with the special use permits approved, actually getting a solar farm is not guaranteed.

Several solar companies have been actively seeking sites for projects since the Illinois Future Energy Jobs Act was approved almost two years ago, aimed at increasing renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, as well as increasing energy efficiency, providing job training in the energy field, and cutting costs to consumers.

Which solar projects are successful through IFEJA will be determined by a state lottery with a Jan. 15 deadline.

To be eligible for the lottery, projects must have local government authorization and a connection to the electric power grid.

Ogle County Zoning Administrator Mike Reibel said approximately 30 percent of the submitted projects are expected to be chosen in the blind drawing.

A pair of foxes pay a visit to Polo neighborhood

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator Polo Historical Society I spend quite a bit of time looking out my kitchen windows while I am washing dishes, preparing food, or having a cup of hot water with honey.

I like to watch the squirrels, birds at the feeder, or notice the cats that go up and down the driveway west of the house.

One black cat has a red collar so it obviously has a family nearby and it is street wise since it does not tarry long in the road.

Our cat watches it from the window and wishes she, too, could be running along beside it, free in the world. I tell her she is better off safe in the house.

Last summer I watched a hawk swoop down, nab a sparrow at the feeder, and take off with the poor

unsuspecting little victim.

I was quite surprised to see that in town. This week I was really surprised to see other animals not usually spotted in town.

This week I suddenly saw what I thought was a very long cat coming into my view in the alley west of us.

Then I realized it was not a cat at all but a very beautiful fox. Soon a second one came into view and I realized it was a pair of them.

I did not often see a fox in the country let alone two of them so this was not something common at all.

I stopped to take a closer look and wished I would have had a smart phone to take a picture. It was eight in the morning as they ambled down the drive.

Then one of them came across our yard and into our driveway.

I thought for a minute he was going to come right up near the

porch but it stayed in the driveway and headed north.

The second one soon joined it.

I watched them as together they crossed the road, went up the steps, and into our neighbors back yard.

Bob Heath then saw them later on in the day at the West Side Park still exploring the area.

Hopefully they found their way back to the country.

They were both in good shape, healthy looking, and coats looked great.

They just came into Polo for a day in the city.

Today during the snow storm it was a good day to read a book, put away Christmas decorations, do some more research, and work on a program for the library.

Donna Peugh is going to help put together the Oscar White Family research.

After a phone call to Donna I

found out she has some history of the family since she has been a family friend for a number of years.

Many of the boys were in the service, and we need to have correct information in our files. The bombardier jacket needs to be labeled correctly.

How many of the boys were in the service and where did they all serve and for how long?

Hopefully we will soon have a correct file and updated information.

Polo Historical Society has a number of people now with many skills, and we need all of us involved.

While Kenneth cannot do a lot these days, his mind keeps working.

He said to me when we were talking about the White family, “ I think Oscar White and Mack White were brothers.”

I found out from Donna that he was correct on that bit of information.

We miss job opportunities, social engagements, and even the chance to mend a relationship when we decide not to try and ask for forgiveness.

If we succeed, we can celebrate with God. If we fail, we can find strength and comfort in Him. Just knowing that we have a faithful companion in our endeavors makes it easier to make a life change, mend a relationship, or even visit a new church.

The snow has made its return to the area. Our thanks for the snowplow drivers who work the late hours to make sure our roads are cleared.

Today, we can take in all the beauty of the trees and land covered in winter white. For all the blessings of today, we are thankful.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Larry and Judy Riffle.

Rev. Charlotte Hoppe led the children’s message for our young friends, Kaitlyn, Laura, and Harper.

The children’s discussion was focused on growing. We are enjoying watching this young family grow.

This past Saturday afternoon, Vicki Hay led the worship committee

Christian Church with the Patterson family.

On Christmas morning, the Patterson family shared their tradition of making and serving aebleskiver, Danish pancake balls.

The excitement of the holidays continued with a wedding to start the year.

On Jan. 5, Sandra attended the ceremony for Hannah Patterson and Josh Millmore at Eastview Church.

The couple had a perfect, unseasonably warm day for their wedding.

Kaitlyn, Klaus, Lilliana, and Everleigh Kulicke, Samuel Patterson, and Claire and Leah Austin all participated in the wedding party.

Sandra had a wonderful time visiting and celebrating with her growing family.

This afternoon, my friend, Amy Sikyta, came over for a visit.

We spent the afternoon trying out my new air fryer. We fried a few snacks, in between long conversations.

Some of our experiments were great and some, we decided, were not so good.

Also joining in the celebration were Crystal and Jack’s daughter, Kaitlyn Kulicke, her husband, Klaus, and their daughters, Liliana and Everleigh, who traveled from Lexington.

Hannah’s fiance, Josh Millmore celebrated with the family at the Christmas get-together.

Denise DaVilo named juvenile probation officer The Ogle County Court Services’ newest juvenile probation officer Denise DaVilo was sworn in recently by Judge Robert T. Hanson.

DaVilo previously coordinated the Ogle County Reporting Center.

During her time there, she over-

saw and planned the programming for the Alternatives to Detention Program, the Alternatives to Suspension Program, the GED program and coordinated the completion of public service work for minors involved with the court system.

Bald Hill Prairie Preserve Winter Walking Tour Saturday, Jan. 19 Byron Forest Preserve District Superintendent of Education Mark Herman will lead a winter walking tour of the Bald Hill Prairie Preserve on Saturday, Jan. 19  from 10 am to 12 noon. “We will hike up to the top of Bald Hill for winter views of Byron, Mt. Morris and Leaf River and see the Illinois Big Tree Champion,� Herman said. “We will also take a look at the recent work done by our Restoration Department staff in restoring the gravel hill oak savannas on

History Presentation Otto Dick, Ogle County Historian brings his wealth of knowledge to Rock River Center on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 10:30 a.m.

He is aware of the many things have happened in Oregon and Ogle County since John Phelps founded Oregon in 1836.

Otto plans to share with us his favorite photos that he has collected over the years.

His recent activities in Oregon include serving as President of the Riverside Cemetery, Past President of the Historical Society and working to establish a museum at the Oregon Depot.

Writing 369 history articles for the Republican Reporter is definitely a challenge for Otto.

He does this with the help of his partner, Marilyn.

Serenity Hospice’s Trivia Night is Jan. 22 in Oregon Serenity Hospice is hosting its first annual Trivia Night on Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Cork & Tap in downtown Oregon.

The night of fun is being hosted by local personality and former news anchor Alan Jones.

A cash bar will be open and free hors d’oeuvres and desserts will be served.

The game will be played in teams

of six that participants can arrange or can be arranged.

The trivia will be random questions covering many topics.

Each member of the winning team will be given a gift card to the Blackhawk Steak Pit. These gift cards are being donated

The Illinois Park & Recreation Association announced that their 2018 Outstanding Facility and Park Award has been won by the Byron Forest Preserve District for their Jarrett Prairie Center Museum Renovation and New Overlook Deck.

The Outstanding Facility & Park Award recognizes public agencies for their exceptional and unique achievements in design and development.

The Byron Forest Preserve District’s nomination scored the highest number of points from any other park, recreation or conservation agency in their division from across the State of Illinois.

The award will be presented to the board of commissioners of the Byron Forest Preserve District at the annual conference of the Illinois Association of Park Districts and Illinois Park & Recreation Association on Friday, January 25, 2019 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago.

“2018 was a banner year for the Byron Forest Preserve District with the discovery of the new Illinois Big Tree Champion at our Bald Hill Prairie Preserve and now the Illinois Park & Recreation Association Outstanding Facility Award for our Jarrett Prairie Center Museum and Overlook Deck,” said Todd Tucker, Byron Forest Preserve District Executive Director.

STATE FUNDS

Eight school districts in Ogle County were among those that recently received state library grants.

Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White awarded more than $1.3 million in School District Library Grant Program awards to 694 public school districts.

More than 1.6 million Illinois students served by school library media programs have benefited from the grants.

“As a former public school teacher and administrator, I know our school libraries are very important in helping students learn and prepare themselves for the future,” White said. “Illinois was the first state to implement a school district grant program, and I’m pleased that we can continue to provide school libraries with some of the financial resources they need to produce well-educated students.”

Local school districts receiving

grants include Oregon, $1,019.25; Polo, $750; Byron, $1,114.50; Meridian, $1,213.50; Rochelle Elementary District, $1,121.25; Rochelle Township High School District, $750; Kings, $750; Eswood, $750.

The appropriations for the school library grants came from fiscal year 2019 budget that was approved by the General Assembly and the Governor.

They were awarded based on a formula of 75 cents per student, with a minimum grant award of $750.

The School District Library Grant Program is used to acquire fiction and non-fiction books, educational CDs and DVDs, library subscriptions to electronic resources, and to improve technology by purchasing new computers or improving Wi-Fi connectivity.

Madison Craft hit four 3-pointers and led all scorers with 16 points for Newman (15-8), which had 12 different players score. Jenna Johnson added 12 points, and Josie Rank hit three 3s and chipped in 11 points.

In a brilliant duel between Braedon Fyock (31 points) of Forreston and Brady Webb (29 points) of Polo, it was the heroics of Fyock carrying his team to a 54-53 overtime win on Jan. 10.

“He deserved it,” said Webb, joining teammate Braiden Soltow in congratulating Fyock at midcourt after the game. “We didn’t play that well.

Kudos to him.”

It was a free throw with 1.7 seconds left by Fyock that clinched the win for the surprising 10-2 Cardinals, who moved to 6-0 in NUIC action.

That point by Fyock was the first lead for Forreston since early in the second quarter.

After an off-balance 3-pointer in the corner

by Webb midway through the fourth quarter, it was Fyock coming back with an old-fashioned 3 and another quick score after his own defensive rebound and length of court of drive to cut the lead to 45-43 with 2:40 left.

Not to be outdone, it was Webb with a basket and free throw to up the Marco advantage to 48-43.

Fyock put the contest into overtime with two 3-pointers off screens and a pair of free throws.

“Not too many high school kids can make shots like that off screens,” Forreston coach Jonathan Schneiderman said. “He works so hard and credit to our team for getting him the ball and setting up screen.”

Thunder knock off Marcos, Bulldogs: West Carroll defeated triangular host Polo 48-24 and Pecatonica-Durand 57-18. Polo beat Pec-Durand 54-22.

Eli Dertz picked up a pair of pins for West Carroll, one at 182 pounds against Polo and the other at 195.

Bishop Groezinger (152) also had two pins. Camren Simpson (170) recorded a pin against Polo and a decision against Pec-Durand.

West Carroll’s Miguel Watkins (106), Ethen Doty (126) and RJ Cianciarulo (220) each scored pins against Polo, while Briar Nevills (120), Daltin Coyer (182) and Chase Bentley (285) each scored pins against Pec-Durand.

ime to catch up on odds and ends.

While covering the Forreston-Polo basketball game last week, I came away visibly impressed with the men’s restroom near the concession stand.

It was on par with what is found in the lobby of a sleek hotel, exhibiting many of the same modern features.

On any other night, that may have been what stood out most, but Braedon Fyock even surpassed a fancy bathroom. Braedon does not play the part of the most physically gifted player out there, but he gets as much out of his talent as anyone around.

What he did in the fourth quarter was simply remarkable and a demonstration of what hard work accomplishes. If I own a company, that’s someone I want to hire.

Is it possible that Forreston and Polo will meet four times this year, with a regional title hanging in the balance?

I recently discovered that the Forreston boys basketball tourney is the 11th longest running in the

state. Started in 1960, it trails holiday events at Pontiac, Princeville, DeKalb, Centralia, Macomb, Marengo, Kankakee, Waverly, Carlinville and Freeburg.

Pontiac (1926), Princeville (1927) and DeKalb (1928) are nearing the century mark.

The Oregon wrestling team continues to shine at the top, with several wrestlers poised for post-season success.

In the latest illinoismatmen.com 1A rankings, Andrew Herbst is No. 2 at 103 pounds and Jacob Milliman is also No. 2 at 113. Chase Clark in No. 6 at 145 and Noah Paul honorable mention at 132.

That’s heady stuff and is good

as any other team at the sectional, other than defending state champ Aurora Christian with its nine ranked grapplers.

Nonetheless, the Hawk wrestling program is in its best position in well over a decade to send kids downstate.

The Oregon bowlers will put it all on the line Saturday at the sectional in Rockford. Surviving one their worst rounds of the season, they moved on from the regional.

If they bowl to their capabilities (18-0 record), they will likely join the 2012 team as state qualifiers in a 1-class system. The only difference between now and then is the way state-qualifying is done.

In 2012, there were numerous sectionals with the top two teams advancing. The advantage for Oregon was avoiding the northwest Chicago schools and murderer’s row of NIC-10 teams.

Now, six teams advance out of fewer sectionals, with Oregon

lumped in with the aforementioned powerhouses. In 2016, the Hawks also entered the sectional undefeated in dual meets, but finished well down in the standings.

Did you know that the enrollment at Oregon is only 398? Compared to the peak of 658 in the 1999-2000 school year, that’s a 40 percent drop.

I can remember actual conversations around town back then regarding the possibility of Oregon going to AA for all sports. That was when the A/AA cut-off in all sports other than football was 750.

Amazingly, Oregon could possibly be 2A in football. The smallest school in the 3A playoffs this year was 420.

That’s a plus for Oregon dropping down a class, but losing 40 percent of your enrollment in 18 years is a cause for concern.

Taking the combined enrollment of Mt. Morris and Oregon, this is probably the fewest kids in high school since the 1950s.

An emphasis is placed on seniors, people with disabilities, individuals with lower incomes, and veterans.

The Illinois Department of Transportation has formed an agreement with North Central Illinois Council of Governments for the purposes of preparing, implementing, and updating the plan for Region 3 and Region 1 (Boone, Carroll, Jo Daviess, Stephenson, and Winnebago

SV man is charged with sexual assault A Stillman Valley man was arrested last week for having sexual contact with two minors.

Ross A. Ellis, 28, has been charged with for two counts of criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 felony.

Ogle County Sheriff’s Ross Ellis Police said the stems from an investigation which began on Jan. 5.

He appeared in Ogle County Court Jan. 8 and was given a $10,000 recognizance bond.

ILLINOIS STATE POLICE Troopers list enforcement figures for December Illinois State Police District 1 Commander Captain Matthew Hodgdon announced the enforcement figures and activity for December.

One traffic fatality occurred in December in the district, which includes Ogle, Carroll, Lee, and Whiteside Counties.

Troopers issued 323 citations, 452 written warnings, and made 12 criminal arrests.

Speeding accounted for 215 citations, seven citations were issued for occupant restraint violations

and three citations were issued for distracted driving violations.

Troopers investigated nine traffic crashes, assisted 65 motorists, and conducted 124 commercial vehicle inspections, 13 of which were placed out-of-service for safety reasons.

Six arrests were made for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The following activity was also reported in the district.

Jan. 5 Jerry D. Smith, 36, of Chicago, was stopped for speeding at 9:06 p.m. on Interstate 88 eastbound at

milepost 41.5 in Whiteside County and charged with driving while license suspended and speeding.

He was released on an I-bond.

Jan. 8 Chriseanna M. King, 25, of Rockford, was stopped for improper window tint at 9:45 a.m. on Interstate 39 northbound at milepost 103 in Ogle County and charged with driving while license revoked and improper window tint. She was released on an I-bond.

Bourne was also issued citations for use of a video device while driving, driver’s license not on person, and driving while license suspended. A passenger in the vehicle, Betty A. Boyd, 48, of Sterling, was also arrested for motor vehicle theft. Both Bourne and Boyd were transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred in the 100 block of South Fourth Street.

Jan. 12 Iris I. Estrada, 24, of Oregon, was arrested at 5:04 p.m. on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Estrada was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Jan. 8 Cody Campbell, 33 of Oregon, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He posted $437 full cash bond and was released with no further court dates.

Jan. 10 Deputies responded to the area of 1997 W. Mud Creek Rd. at 12:30 p.m. for a one vehicle accident.

The vehicle, driven by Robert E. Friemuth, 60, of Oregon, was located approximately a half-mile off of the roadway in a wooded area.

Friemuth was taken to OSF St. Anthony Medical Center, Rockford, by Lifeline helicopter.

It is believed that Friemuth had an unknown medical issue that caused the accident. The vehicle was removed by Maggio’s towing, Rockford.

Lashawn Walton, 34, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He posted the $733 full cash bond and was released with no further court dates.

Jan. 11 Melissa Alumbaugh, 29, of Sterling, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

She was released on a $1,000 recognizance bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 25.

Deputies and the Franklin Grove Fire Department responded at 6:30 a.m. to a two-vehicle accident with injuries on Lowden Road about a quarter mile south of Stone Barn Road.

A car driven by Michael Chavera, 49, of Dixon, was northbound on Lowden Road and car driven by Frank Castaldo, 28 of Byron was southbound.

The vehicles collided nearly head-on, rolled over at least once, and came to a rest in the east ditch of the roadway.

Chavera was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ogle County Coroner.

Castaldo suffered only minor injuries and declined medical attention.

The accident remains under investigation.

Jan. 12 Deputies responded at 8:21 a.m. to a single vehicle accident with an injury in the 1,000 block of East Ill. 64.

A car driven by Rachel O’Brien, 22, of Rochelle, was eastbound when it went out of control on the snow-covered road and traveled into the north side ditch where it struck an embankment.

She was transported to Rochelle Community Hospital for minor injuries.

James Jaskiewicz, 49, of Mt. Morris, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He was released on a recognizance bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 28.

Bell was transported to Rochelle Community Hospital for treatment of minor injuries by the Ashton Ambulance. The accident remains under investigation.

At 12:53 a.m. deputies investigated a vehicle found located in the ditch near the intersection of Henry Road and Peek Home Road.

Nathan Linboom, 35, of Polo, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Deputies along with Rochelle EMS and Hillcrest First Responders responded at 7:34 p.m. to the area of Ill. 251 at Powers Rd. for a three-vehicle crash with unknown injuries.

A 17-year-old male juvenile was attempting to turn his pick-up truck west onto Powers Road from Ill. 251 when it struck a car traveling southbound on Ill. 251.

After being struck, the car was pushed into another pickup truck that was waiting at the stop sign on Powers Road.

The driver of the car was transported

by EMS to Rochelle Community Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The sheriff’s department did not release the names of the drivers.

Deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash with no injuries at 2:05 p.m. at the intersection of Ill. 64 and Chana Road.

A westbound vehicle driven by Jonathan Witthoeft, 32, of Oregon, showed to make a turn onto Chana Road when it was struck in the rear by another westbound vehicle driven by Corey Walen, 62, of Dixon.

Walen was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

Jan. 13 Deputies and the Ashton Fire Department responded at 11:38 a.m. to a single-vehicle accident with injuries on Chana Road a half mile south of Flagg Road.

A car driven by Kaitlin Bell, 18, of Ashton, was driving northbound on Chana Road when the vehicle slid off the east side of the roadway, went into the ditch, and struck several trees near a creek.

Dejuan Haslett, 25, of DeKalb, was arrested on outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He was held in the Ogle County Jail on a $2,454 bond pending a court appearance.

Jan. 14 Kelly Morrison, 34, of Rockford, was arrested on outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He was held in the Ogle County Jail on a $3,625 bond pending a court appearance.

Lucille Snodgrass, 99, of Mt. Morris, died on Monday, Jan. 14, 2019 at Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, Mt. Morris.

Lucille was born on Sept. 9, 1919 in Freeport, the daughter of Irvin Roy and Clara (Hartlip) Moore.

She married William A. Snodgrass on Sept. 10, 1938 in Mt. Morris. He preceded her in death on May 19, 1989.

She worked on the family farm. Lucille loved dogs, and she raised and showed Samoyed dogs.

RUSSELL W. JOHNSON Russell W. Johnson, 74, of Forreston, died on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019 at his home.

Russell was born Jan. 8, 1945 in Kewanee, the son of Art and Donna (Kemerling) Johnson.

He married Marsha Faye Kober on Feb. 2, 1963 in Sterling. She preceded him in death on April 7, 2015.
