Kaitlyn Marschang, 16, was diagnosed right after Thanksgiving with small cell ovarian cancer, a rare and aggressive disease that mainly affects young women.

She had a successful surgery to remove a large tumor in December, and then went to Madison, Wisconsin, Jan. 2 to begin in-patient chemotherapy.

Her parents Ray and Rebecca Marschang have taken time off work, and Rebecca has taken an extended leave from her job at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport.

Kaitlyn Marschang Kate completed six chemo treatments and returned home Jan. 7, but is scheduled to go back for additional chemo on Jan. 24.

She is a junior at Polo Community High School, and has a younger sister Allissa, a seventh grader.

Family friend Krista Blum said Monday that several fundraisers have already been held or are in progress.

Team Kate T-shirts and wristbands can be ordered from Kim Gray at the high school or from Jeanette Linker at Country Financial in Polo.

Other fundraisers are being held at PCHS sports events including on one Thursday, Jan. 17 at the home girls basketball game versus Forreston.

Kate’s classmates are planning an event in February at Jeff’s Refs in downtown Polo, and a benefit is being planned for March 30 at Barnacopia.

In addition, an account has been set us at First State Bank, Polo.

Donations can be dropped off at the bank during business hours, left in the night depository, or mailed to the bank at PO Box 67, Polo IL 61064. Checks should be made out to Team Kate.

Grocery store to open for business Jan. 28

It’s official — Polo residents can shop right in town for groceries in less than three weeks.

Tushar Patel, owner of what will be Polo Fresh Food Market, told the city council Monday evening that the new store at 205 S. Division Ave. (Ill. 26) will open for business on Monday, Jan. 28.

The news was met with approval from aldermen.

Jim Busser said he went through the completely updated store and gave it high marks.

Mayor Doug Knapp said he, too, went throughout the store and thanked Patel for doing a high quality job on the renovations.

“It is really top-notch,” he said.

Polo has been without a grocery store for more than 10 years.

Patel bought the shuttered Polo Food Center, formerly Polo Super Valu, last year, and with financial incentives from the city has renovated it and purchased new equipment.

He also owns and operates a grocery store in Lanark.

The new store will offer a full grocery line, fresh meats and produce, deli, and liquor mart, and will initially be open daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the hours possibly expanded later.

In a related matter, the council decided against relinquishing its first lien position on the store.

As an incentive, the city loaned Patel $70,000 to help him get the store opera-

tional.

According to the terms of the agreement, half that amount will be forgiven after three years if the store is still in business, and the remainder after five years.

Knapp told the council that First State Bank Shannon-Polo has requested the first lien position for its mortgage on the store.

Patel said he is borrowing up to $400,000 from the bank.

City attorney Tom Suits voiced opposition to the bank’s request.

“As your attorney, I have to advise you against this,” he said. “You can do this with your own money if you want to, but this is the public’s money.”

Veurink was also cited for possession of cannabis under 10 grams and for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Community input sought for Black Hawk plaza

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Those with an affinity for the Black Hawk Statue are invited to offer their two cents worth next week for what the area around the well-known landmark will look like.

Illinois Department of Natural Resources landscape architect George Bellovics will head up a meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 15 to brainstorm with the community about how to redesign the plaza around the statue.

The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Nash Recreation Center, Oregon.

“Now that the money is lined up and the contracts are signed [to repair the statue itself], we are looking at the area around it,” Bellovics said. “Since the community has been so involved in the process, we wanted to engage them in planning for the plaza.”

He said those who attend the meeting will be divided into groups, and each group will come up with a design.

“It’s a great way to involve the community. I’m trying to keep it as open and creative as possible,” he

The evening of dancing is open to the public who are high school age and older.

Formal attire and masks are required. Masks will be available for rental or purchase.

Marcolite Review with Miss Scott

Q: Did you have any fears throughout first semester whether The Marcolite would catch people’s attention or not completing an issue?

Miss S: Of course not! All fifteen staff members and I met every deadline this semester with hours to spare! (That’s a complete and utter lie...) No, we struggled (a lot) at first to streamline the work done for each issue, but as the semester went on, we knew what to do, how to do it, and had those deadlines (pretty much) figured out.

I would like, however, to give a special shout out to those who worked overtime week after week: Colton Emmert, Patricia Plachno, and Jonah Heath, along with Tabitha Falk, who wasn’t even on the staff!

As for catching attention, the staff came to me with awesome ideas during the first week of first semester, so I had no worries that it wouldn’t be a hit (not to mention the fact that the entire idea of having a school newspaper came from Patricia Plachno and Summer Linboom last year).

Q: Is there anything you would change about The Marcolite in its current state?

Miss S: I would absolutely love to print in color (though the .pdf version on the website is in color). I also wish it would staple itself (though I kind of like making students struggle through the manual labor of stapling each week).

Last, I would love to have an entire section of funnies (since that is the best part of any newspaper, amiright?) but the small format wouldn’t allow such miniscule writing to show up (though I must say that the current cartoons and jokes are on point!)

— I also wish there was more room for my Bitmoji to show up (see page 2) Q: Are there any new sections of The Marcolite we can expect in second semester?

Miss S: That’s a big question!

Tabitha’s political cartoons will be carried on since she’ll be officially joining the staff, Summer’s Gregton chronicles will be continued, and we have a creative and talented group on staff for the second semester, so I look forward to seeing what they come up with!

I will mention that there is not an issue coming out next week since we’ll need a couple days to get started with the new staff!

I’m also hoping for The Marcolite to continue next year, so get yourself enrolled in Creative Writing for Fall 2019 as soon as possible (it’s open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors)!

Q: Pepsi or Coke? Explain.

Miss S: Coffee. That was an option, right? There is nothing good that comes from pop. If I need carbonation, I’ll take a Crush, Barq’s, or 7-Up

This beautiful-inside-and-out 16-year-old girl has her community behind her as she fights.

There have been bake sales and t-shirt/bracelet sales to help the family, as well as a Go Fund Me page.

We are well on our way to reaching the goal of $5,000, but we still need everyone’s help to support Kate!

Come to future girls’ basketball games at the high school to see the t-shirts make an appearance!

Every effort makes all the difference. Keep a look out for t-shirt forms (in the high school office) and bake sale updates to know how you can help make an impact!

Miss S: This semester, we’ve come a heck of a long way! I’m incredibly proud of what the staff has come up with (and the fact that they do it every week on top of their other class assignments and other coursework).

Phone call from Texas means more research Questions raised may not be answered

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator Polo Historical Society A couple of weeks ago I received a phone call from Texas. Randy was going through his grandfather’s memorabilia from World War II. In the box was a single dog tag that said: John White, 402 North Street, Polo, Illinois.

Randy then said, “There is another name on it that says Lela and that is probably his wife.”

I said to him, “Lela was not his wife. Lela was his mother.”

I went on to tell him that the White family lived two blocks from us and they were closely connected

In my mind I came still see the baby crib in the center of the living room.

I can also remember Dr. McDaniel giving us all shots of something.

They had to fish me out from under the kitchen table.

It was a very traumatic time for

our family but Lela White kept us all calm and the house ran smoothly.

My father would stand outside and talk to my mother who was in the upstairs bedroom. Lela White was busy taking care of all of us.

I learned later that she had eight boys and one girl so obviously she could handle all kinds of situations.

The youngest boy Bob was my age and the girl, Wilma, was the age of my sister, Ruby Jean.

The White family did not have a lot but neither did we. At that time everyone was in the same situation.

Randy, from Texas was quite surprised when I related all the story to him.

I also told him about one of the boys, Cecil, and how we have his bombardier jacket from World War II at the museum.

Christina, Cecil’s wife, was a secretary at, I think, Congress

School.

I remember going to Christina and Cecil’s anniversary that was held at a church in Dixon.

I just kept rattling on about our connection to the White family. I am certain Randy began to think it was never ending.

When Randy finally had a chance to get a word in, he told me that he would like to get this dog tag of John White’s back to Polo and perhaps to a family member.

Is there anyone left of this family of Oscar and Lela White?

My job is now to find them before summer when Randy will come to Polo and return the dog tag.

He does not know how his grandfather had the tag.

Was he a good friend of John’s?

Did they serve together somewhere during the war?

We probably will never know.

The business was built at the location before city zoning ordinances were enacted and so was grandfathered into the non-con-

The zoning change, recommended by the Zoning Board of Appeals, was required to rebuild.

Jared Dambman said he will also ask for a variance because he wants to rebuild on an existing concrete slab which is a foot too close to the property’s boundary.

He grew up in Geneseo and his family stopped to see the tall monument each year on the way to their summer vacations in Wisconsin.

“Coming through Oregon and seeing that statue as a 5 or 6 year old boy is every bit as indelible today as it was then,” he said. “It’s not just Oregon’s statue; it’s everybody’s statue.”

More than a decade of fundraising to repair the 107-year-old concrete statue was finally completed

last September when several large local donations put the efforts over the top of the goal of $600,000.

The statue, created by sculptor Lorado Taft in 1910 as a tribute to Native Americans, is situated on a high bluff overlooking the Rock River at Lowden State Park near Oregon.

Time and weather have significantly damaged the surface of the landmark, which was unveiled in 1911.

Officials from the IDNR and the Illinois Conservation Foundation signed contracts last fall with Quality Restorations Inc., of Wood Dale, the firm that will do the repair work.

QRI wrapped the statue in November to protect it from winter weather. This is the fifth winter it has been under wraps.

The repair work is slated to begin in April and will take an estimated 60 days.

After church, I joined the regular group for lunch in Dixon.

Don and Vicki Hay, Charlotte Hoppe, Judy Nettz, Jim and Nancy Hopkins, Kathy, and I had a great visit over lunch.

I have missed the relaxing Sunday dinners with my church family.

In the evening, my brother, Ben Bittinger, his wife, Jo, and their son, Garrett, invited me over for dinner.

Hayden was working this night.

I arrived in time to catch the end of the football game with the Bittingers. Garrett has been getting ready to go back to school after the holiday break.

This past Saturday morning, our men’s and women’s breakfast groups went out for the morning meal, meeting at a restaurant in Dixon.

There were nearly 20 in attendance enjoying the fellowship and delicious meal.

On New Year’s Day, Charlotte Hoppe and I headed to Freeport for a day at the movies.

A first for both of us, we went to two movies at the theater with lunch in between. We had a fun day to start the new year.

On Wednesday evening, I went to visit with Sue Ramage. It had been a while since we visited.

The conversation was made sweeter by the delicious dessert she shared. I am so grateful for the time I can share with friends and family.

It continues to be my honor to drive Jean Cunningham home after church.

Even though the drive is short, we still manage to have meaningful conversations.

We discuss the past and future, our family and friends, and even the story of how she was courted

by Powell.

This week, when I dropped her off, I heard her say, “love you,” just before closing my van door.

It always brightens my day to hear those words. Especially with my kids so far away, every conversation ends with a “love you.”

I am surrounded by love. In encouraging words and sweet messages from family and friends, I see love all around.

I can tell that my friends and family members are loved by God. I can tell because the love they share with me comes from Him. When we know God and are able to accept His great gift, we can’t help but share it with everyone we meet.

God’s love extends to everyone.

Even when we feel unlovable, God loves us.

When we feel completely alone, God is with us.

We are reminded of His love when we reach out to each other.

Sharing a ride home from church or saying those precious words are wonderful ways to share His love.

I hope to see you next week at our church. Come and join our loving family for a time of praise and worship.

Reiter transitions to Focus House posts

Beck to celebrate her 99th birthday with open house

Officials of the Foundation for Focus House announced last week that Christa Reiter, 46, of Oregon, has transitioned from Focus House Residential Counselor and Juvenile Probation Officer to the Alternative Program and Quality Assurance Coordinator.

According to a press release from the foundation, Reiter received her bachelor’s degree from Aurora University, where she majored in Criminal Justice.

She joined Focus House in 2016 bringing background in mental health from working in many set-

Reiter will oversee four programs including Alternative to Suspension, Alternative to Detention, Public Service Work, and GED programming as well as developing quality assurance standards and conducting quarterly audits.

Focus House Director Brenda Mason said that she and the staff at Focus House are thrilled to have Reiter in this position.

Adaline Beck, of Polo, will celebrate her 99th birthday on Jan. 22.

An open house, hosted by her daughter, for family and friends, will be held on Saturday, Jan. 19 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Pinecricker Cafe banquet room in Polo.

Adaline was married to the late Dale Beck, and they had four children, Bev (Bob, deceased) Merdian, Roger (deceased), Linda (Steve) Grossnickle, and Donna (Kenny) Soltow.

University of Illinois Extension and DeKalb County Forest Preserve are joining forces again this year to offer a day for families to get outside, have fun, and explore an enjoyable destination.

Winterfest 2019 is Saturday, Jan. 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Natural Resource Education Center in Russell Woods Forest Preserve, 11750 IL-72, located 1 mile west of Genoa on Illinois 72.

Extension staff and volunteers will offer a variety of educational and recreational activities for the whole family.

“The horse drawn wagon rides through the preserve are our big attraction,” said Extension Educator Peggy Doty. “The draft horses take passengers on a scenic ride through our preserve located right on the Kishwaukee River,” Doty continued, “this is a festival about

the season of winter so it doesn’t matter if we have snow.”

The morning will start indoors at 9:30 am at the Center’s bird viewing window where Doty will share some tips and tricks for feeding and identifying our local winter birds.

The Genoa Prairie Gems 4-H Club will be offering their annual fund raising lunch and snack sale.

Visitors can buy food for a reasonable price and help the 4-H club at the same time.

“The rest of the day is free but we do graciously except donations to cover materials,” Doty said. “It is a wonderful opportunity to bring out the whole family for one activity or stay for the entire day. Join your friends for a day in the woods as we celebrate the season of winter.”

Encourage reading text in electronic games, social media

A

s we begin a new year, we tend to look for ways we would like to improve our health and our lives in general.

While it may not be at the top of our lists, reading more may be something that we can all add to our new year’s resolutions.

For this month, we will explore suggestions for how we can support our children and grandchildren in working toward the goal of reading more.

There are two main reasons to read that apply to all ages and all stages of learning to read.

One is to read for entertainment and enjoyment. The other is to read for information.

We should emphasize both reasons, even for beginning readers.

I have had conversations with parents who are concerned because their children (of all ages) do not read anymore.

I ask them to consider the variety kinds of texts that their children might read daily.

It may not be books, but they do read texts of some kind.

We can demonstrate authentic purposes for reading, the real reasons we read, and the variety of kinds of texts that count as reading, and that will help our children and grandchildren have a more positive attitude toward reading.

Coming into its NUIC contest with Forreston, AFC coach Scott Stevens was most concerned with eliminating turnovers, preventing backdoor passes, shutting down Braedon Fyock and being physical enough.

Holding on to a 39-33 lead with five minutes left in Tuesday’s game, AFC (4-11) appeared to be accomplishing those goals. Unfortunately for the Raiders, they were outscored 21-3 the rest of the way in a 54-42 loss.

“It was an exciting game,” Stevens said. “We cleaned up the turnovers, got offensive rebounds and battled back. I see us getting better every day.”

Forreston (9-2) led for most of the game until Calvin Jahn made a 3-pointer for a 27-26 Raider advantage. Malachi Ball-Alexander put in an off-balance buzzer beater for a 31-30 third-quarter lead.

After a Kolten Dorty 3 gave the lead back to the Cardinals, it was the 5-foot-9 Ball-Alexander driving to basket for a score to tie it back up.

Moments later, Forreston coach Jonathan Schneiderman was whistled for a technical for being on the court and Jesus Aguilar sank the two charity tosses.

Sawyer Murphy added a pair of baskets for the Raiders’ largest lead at 39-33 and the hometown Forreston crowd had to be wondering what was going on.

Schneiderman and his players knew what the answer was, though.

“At halftime, I asked them on a scale of 1-to-10, how we were playing,” Schneiderman said. “I got back a couple of 1s. We are not good enough to not be playing hard. We gave up too much easy stuff.”

Suddenly, the Cardinals came alive in the final part of the game, with 6-3 big man Mitchell Heinz starting the rally with a free throw and then a basket off a Jakob Boomgarden assist.

Fyock, who did not score in the first half, added a pair of baskets and Forreston regained the lead, 40-39.

“I couldn’t get it going early.

They had a guy (Ball-Alexander) face-guarding me,” Fyock said. “In the huddle, we said the first three quarters didn’t matter. You have to win ugly sometimes and that’s what it was.”

Meanwhile, the Raiders finished with two turnovers and four missed shots on the final six possessions after Murphy pulled them to within 44-42 with 2:42 left.

“I felt we had a well-rounded atmosphere both inside and out,” Stevens said.

In a sluggish first half, it was AFC taking an early 4-1 lead on points by Murphy. The Raiders also grabbed the first four rebounds of the game.

“In the locker room, I told them these were the state football champs and we needed to crash the boards,” Stevens said. “I thought we did that and weren’t afraid of their physicality.”

Then is was sophomore Ethan Greenfield providing a spark for Forreston with 10 points in the first quarter, as the Cardinals took a 15-6 lead.

“Malachi kept on Fyock in the first half. That was fantastic,” Stevens said. “Then, a darkhorse (Greenfield) emerged.”

Social media exposes teenagers’ abhorrent actions I debated whether or not to give my opinions on what has become an ongoing saga with Byron athletics and more specifically the football program.

Besides the nude “Oreo Run,” the latest issue to come up was a football player allegedly putting his penis in the face of another person on the bus ride back from the state-championship game.

Calling it a non-story, I did not feel the Oreo run merited media attention and expressed that in this column last month.

In a well-written letter, one local resident told me that my dismissal of the seriousness of such bad behavior is a slap in the face to coaches and parents that demand better.

I appreciate someone taking the time to do that and respect them for their opinion.

to mainstream thought. That’s okay.

In Sunday’s Rockford Register Star, an editorial stated that the Byron School Board must hire an outside entity to review the culture of its sports program.

To me, that is a slap in the face to all the good coaches, administrators and elected school board members at Byron.

Not once was I aware of anything out of the norm in the two decades of covering their athletic program.

Not being a true insider at Byron, maybe there’s something I’m missing. But, every coach and administrator I’ve encountered has been more than satisfactory in how they conduct business, including head

football coach Jeff Boyer and athletic director Jim Kann.

As a public sector entity, school districts have always been under scrutiny and more so in recent years.

But, should they come under attack because of the behavior of their student-athletes?

Regarding the latest incident, why don’t we let the young man be responsible for his actions instead of making a blanket statement that this is a “cultural” problem?

Maybe I’m prejudiced by the fact I feel the same way about schools getting blamed for shortfalls of academic achievement.

I think schools; especially here in Ogle County where I am most familiar, do all they can to create a safe and positive environment in both academia and athletics.

Both students and athletes can thrive with the opportunities that have been created for them.

There has never been as much

adult supervision at the high-school level as there is now, but it is still impossible for a coach to know everything that is going on, be it the back of a bus or on a football field the night before a game.

Here’s one fact lost on everyone — teenage boys, not just at Byron, but all over the country, do some weird stuff.

The difference between now and when I was in school is that social media did not exist to expose it.

If there needs to be an indictment, how about starting with the culture of football itself?

It is the sport I grew up with and enjoy the most, but what about the macho element to it?

Does it create an environment where bad boy activity is perpetuated, be the high school, college or professional ranks?

Maybe that is a topic for another column.

Oregon finished second at the Polo Invitational with 174.5 points – right behind Camanche, Iowa’s total of 176 – thanks to four individual champions.

Andrew Herbst (27-1) pinned Camanche’s Jaxon Bussa in 59 seconds to win the championship bout at 106 pounds.

Jacob Milliman pinned West Carroll’s Briar Nevills in 3:22 to win the 113-pound title. Noah Paul (26-2) earned three pins in a combined 2:55 to win at 132.

Chase Clark (28-3) earned a tech fall and two pins in a combined 2:02 to take the 145-pound title for the Hawks.

Jokiah Sewell was second at 152 for Oregon.

West Carroll placed sixth with 130.5 points, thanks in lower-weights outstanding wrestler Ethen Doty and upperweights outstanding wrestler Eli Dertz.

Doty (29-0) earned two pins in a combined 2:15 to reach the finals at 126 pounds, and took title via an 18-2 tech fall versus Camanche’s Eric Kinkaid. Dertz won a 12-7 decision against Freeport’s Matthew Chavers in the 182-pound final.

Fulton’s Eli Pannell moved his record to 26-0 with two pins to win the 220-pound title.

The Marcos finished 10th with 67.5 points. Alex Davies took second at 145 pounds, and Marcus McKenna won a 7-2 decision over West Carroll’s Kelden McCombie in the 160-pound third-place bout.

Jan. 6 Deputies, Byron police, and the Byron Fire Department and EMS responded to a motorcycle accident with injuries at 1:44 p.m. in the 7,000 block of North River Road.

A motorcycle driven by Ernest B. Miller, 30, of Mt. Morris, was southbound on River Road along with another motorcycle driven by James D. Emery, 35, of Leaf River. Both motorcycles attempted to pass a southbound car.

Miller’s motorcycle went out of control, crossed over the roadway, and entered the west side ditch, where it rolled over.

Miller was transported to Mercyhealth, Rockford, by Byron ambulance with multiple injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.

Dewayne Harbach, 67, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

He did not post a full cash bond of $823.79 and was held in the Ogle County Jail pending a court appearance.

School officials ultimately decided that the Oreo run was not a case of hazing. It took place the night before the Tigers kicked off the IHSA football playoffs with a 50-14 drubbing of Rock Island Alleman.

Undefeated Byron dominated opponents on the way to the state title game, where the Tigers suffered their first and only loss of the season.

All nine football coaches and nearly 30 members of the football team were interviewed in the school’s investigation of the Oreo run. No complaint was filed with local police.

Players who participated in the Oreo run were suspended for playoff games on Nov. 10, 17, and 23, the last of which was the Class 3A state championship game, where Byron lost 24-20 to Monticello.

None of the team’s top players was suspended.

Sheriff ’s department issues 121 traffic citations over holiday The Ogle County Sheriff’s Department conducted additional traffic enforcement over the holidays from Dec. 17 to Jan. 2., reminding motorists to drive sober and buckle up as part of the Illinois Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement effort.

The sheriff’s department joined the Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies across Illinois to reduce motor vehicle crashes, injuries and deaths by arresting impaired drivers and issuing seat belt and other vehicle code violations.

OBITUARIES R.L. “RICK” CRAWFORD R.L. “Rick” Crawford, 66, of Rochelle, died on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2018, at Serenity Hospice and Home in Oregon, with his wife of 46 years by his side.

He now soars with the birds he loved watching.

A bald eagle’s visit on the morning of his passing gave his family comfort that he has been reborn pain free and at peace.

He was a strong, proud and loving husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed his time with grandkids and working in his shop with wood or at his blacksmith’s forge.

LORRAINE M. ELSASSER Lorraine M. Elsasser, 95, of Mt. Morris, died on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019 at Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, Mt. Morris.

Lorraine was born on Aug. 18, 1923 in Sterling, the daughter of Henry and Lettie (Delp) Grobe.

She graduated from Sterling High School, Sterling.

Lorraine married Edwin Elsasser on Nov. 27, 1943 in Sterling. He preceded

DENNIS R. LOWER Dennis Russell Lower, 59, of Walker, Iowa, and formerly of Leaf River, died peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2018 after an extended illness at FHN Memorial Hospital, Freeport.

Dennis was born on Dec. 9, 1959 in Freeport,the son of Clarence and Ruth (Reed) Lower. Following in his father’s footsteps, he was a livestock dealer in Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois.

Dennis is survived by mother, Ruth Lower; two sons, Jeremy and Joshua; two daughters, Ashley Lower and Amanda Hankins; eight grandchildren, Malia, Logan, Ava, Gabby, Samantha, Nick,

Rick was born on Nov. 15, 1952 in Salina, Kansas, the son of Jack and Pat (Johannes) Crawford.

Funeral services were held on Jan. 5 at Finch Funeral Home, 405 E. Hitt St., Mt. Morris, with Rev. Tracy Singleton officiating.

Burial was at Oak Knoll Cemetery, Sterling.

Charles F. Svihlik, 77, of Forreston, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019.

Charles was born on May 5, 1941 to Frank and Lydia (Barta) Svihlik in Chicago.

He graduated from Proviso East High School in 1959.

Charles married the love of his life, Marianne, on Oct. 28, 1963 in Oak Park.

Their love brought into this world three children, Charles W., Timothy, and Jeannine.

They celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary by renewing their vows.

Charles had a great love for the outdoors, trains, building model airplanes, and reading – especially about American history and novels by Dean Koontz and James Patterson.
