PUTNAM COUNTY COURT

Murder charge in Dewey death BY LYLE GANTHER lganther@bcrnews.com

Clifford Andersen

HENNEPIN — A Putnam County grand jury on Thursday returned an indictment against Clifford Andersen, 67, of Standard for the murder of his sister-in-law, Deborah K. Dewey, 62, of Ladd, who was last seen alive on Aug. 22, 2016, in Spring Valley.

Dewey’s gray 2007 Buick LaCrosse was found unlocked on Aug. 29, 2016, at the TA Truck Stop on Route 47, just north of Interstate 80, in Morris. On Sept. 12, 2016, the Illinois State Police searched a residence located at Fifth Street and Route 71 in Standard. During the search of the residence and surrounding property, investi-

gators exhumed a body from a shallow grave located in the yard of the residence. The body was later confirmed to be that of Dewey. An intense year-long investigation by the Illinois State Police led to the newest indictment, according to a press release issued Thursday. Andersen was previously indicted and

charged with concealment of a homicidal death in connection with Dewey’s disappearance and death. The Illinois State Police and Illinois Attorney General’s Office were assisted by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau County Sheriff’s Office and the Cook County Sheriff’s Office during the investigation.

Water rates on the rise 35 percent increase needed to replace aging water tower

BY DAVE COOK news@tonicanews.com PERU — After recognizing the World War II military service of the seven sons of the Witczak family by renaming a portion of Route 251 near Tonica in their honor in 2016, Illinois State Senator Sue Rezin has announced an effort to honor another local family with a similar distinction. Rezin has proposed legislation, Senate Joint Resolution 25 (SJR 25), which successfully passed through the Senate on Nov. 9, to rename a portion of Route 6 as the “Kaszynski Brothers Memorial Highway.” It would cover the area from Spring Valley’s Mary Street to Peru’s Harrison Street. “To have six brothers all serve our country in World War II is not only a unique story, but it’s one that deserves special recognition. While we can never do enough to thank our veterans for their service and sacrifice, naming this road in honor of the Kaszynski brothers is a small token of our appreciation of them, as they fought so bravely for our country. Naming this stretch of Route 6 will also help future generations know about the Kaszynski brothers, their story, and what they meant to Peru, LaSalle County, and our country. “This family and all

Lostant Grade School fourth-grader Mya Handley was one of the social studies students who helped to honor Veterans Day through a reading and performance of “America’s White Table” by Margot Theis Raven on Nov. 9. The students demonstrated what each item on the table represents to a fallen or missing soldier and their families and fellow service members.

LOSTANT – The village’s 106-year-old water tower has been on Lostant officials’ minds for a substantial period of time. Now, the village is applying for a grant that could help pay for a replacement, but the application requires an increase in water rates. As part of the process to apply for the grant, Lostant needed to increase its water rates. Edging out the required minimum rate of $42.19 per 5,000 gallons, Lostant is opting to set its new rate at $42.25. That is $11 higher than its former rate of $31.25 per 5,000 gallons, which represents a 35.2 percent increase. Village President Jack Immel indicated this amount is in range with nearby communities’ water rates. “We’re going to basically median, as far as towns around us are concerned,” Immel said. “We had not planned on raising the rates,” he said. However, the increase is a requirement for a chance to obtain the grant, and Immel said, “We have to do this.”
