Missing Ladd woman’s remains found in Standard Homicide investigation continues By Terri Simon news@tonicanews.com

STANDARD — The Illinois State Police (ISP) confirmed Wednesday morning the body of Deborah K. Dewey, 62, of Ladd was found in a shallow grave at 104 Fifth St. in Standard. On Monday, Sept. 12, the Illinois State Police Zone 3 Investigations and Putnam County Sheriff’s Department began searching the Standard residence and surrounding property, which is located alongside Route 71 in Standard. According to a press release from the ISP, “investigators exhumed a body from a shallow grave located in the yard of the residence.” The body was transport-

ed by the Putnam County death investigator to Bloomington, where an autopsy was performed. Using dental records, the preliminary results of the autopsy determined the body was Dewey. The missing person search for Dewey has ended, and the situation is now considered a homicide investigation. The ISP said this remains an open and ongoing investigation, however, they will not release any further information at this time, though they will provide updates as information becomes available. Police did not divulge if any arrests have been made in the case or if there are any suspects. Dewey of Ladd was last

seen on Aug. 22 in Spring Valley. Her 2007 Buick LaCrosse was discovered in Morris on Aug. 29 at the TA Truck Stop/R Place restaurant just north of Interstate 80. The vehicle was unlocked and undamaged; her purse was still in the vehicle. Dewey’s family had been actively helping in the search, passing out thousands of flyers and gaining the attention of the national media. Beginning Monday, officials were on the scene for hours, which continued into Tuesday. The perimeter of the Standard property at 104 Fifth St. was taped off with crime scene tape, and officials could be seen digging on the property. A mention of a press conference later

in the day Tuesday did not transpire, rather a press release was sent out from the ISP around 8 a.m. Wednesday. Assisting agencies include the ISP Intelligence Support Unit, ISP Digital Crimes Unit, STIC, ISP Crime Scene Services, ISP District 17, Illinois Conservation Police, Bureau County Sheriff’s Office, LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office, LaSalle County State’s Attorney’s Office, Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Ladd Police Department, and Kane County Sheriff’s bloodhound unit. Anyone with information on the death of Dewey is asked to contact the ISP District 17 headquarters at 815-224-1171.

LOSTANT — A 600-gallon propane tank with a roaring, 40-foot mass of flames shooting out of it isn’t something anyone should want to be remotely near, let alone mere inches

Members from Lostant, McNabb, Henry, Leonore, Cedar Point, Wenona and Oglesby Fire Departments were briefed prior to the exercise about proper procedures and safety concerns.

LOSTANT — A Lostant resident’s fence stood in opposition to the town’s ordinances, until the village granted the homeowner’s request for a variance. The village board at its Sept. 12 meeting granted Brian Burcar’s request for a variance to build a fence on his property, despite the zoning board’s recommendation not to do so. Prior to the meeting, the zoning board had convened and come to the conclusion it did not recommend granting Burcar’s request for a variance. “After the town cut down the trees in front of my house, it was kind if bare,” Burcar said. To combat the problem, he had put up a decorative fence, but this came with one issue — he hadn’t realized the need for a variance.
