Honoring Lostant’s veterans By Zachary J. Pratt news@tonicanews.com

LOSTANT — To honor those who have served and fallen, the American Legion has proposed the construction of a memorial to be located in Lostant’s park Jerry Comisky of the American Legion brought the proposal to the board during its July 10 meeting. “It’s about time we put up a veterans’ memorial for all the veterans who have served,” Comisky said, indicating the American Legion would like to erect such a monument in the park. He said the base would be level with the ground,

“The ones that are on the ground are all rotten,” Decker said. Board member Chris Dose suggested the cause of rot could be the gazebo does not have a concrete base. Decker indicated another issue, which could have contributed. “I don’t think they used treated 2-by4s,” he said. Randy Railey suggested the possibility of moving the gazebo to the vicinity of the proposed memorial where the village could have a concrete base waiting for it, as it will already be lifted. The board is looking into this proposal.

therefore providing no obstacle for mowing and thus posing no hindrance to park maintenance. Residents can expect the structure in May of 2018 in honor of Memorial Day. “We actually want to have a dedication on Memorial Day next year with our Memorial Day services,” Comisky said. The park could also see work on its gazebo, which the village is considering moving toward the proposed veterans’ memorial. According to Leland Decker, the structure needs to be lifted up, so the base can be repaired, as the boards have fallen into decay.

Local baseball legend Darrell Alleman hosted another Field of Dreams Day at his Granville farm on July 8. Two Little League games were held before “ghost players” from the 1989 film “Field of Dreams” walked out of the corn and onto the ball field. Later, the film was presented on a large screen erected in the outfield. “There’s no one else like Darrell, someone who’s done something like this just out of his love for the game of baseball,” Frank Dardis, who appeared in the film, said.
