IMMIGRATION EXECUTIVE ORDER | ILLINOIS REACTION

Land of Lincoln, and sanctuary Proposals would help provide more protection to immigrants in Illinois CHICAGO (AP) – Illinois legislators are proposing to boost immigrant protections statewide in response to President Donald Trump’s executive orders on immigration, a move advocates say would essentially give the state “sanctuary” status. One proposal says schools, medical facil-

ities and places of worship don’t have to give access to federal immigration authorities or local law enforcement working on their behalf. Another proposal would limit cooperation and communication between local police and immigration authorities. “If there was ever a moment for things to

move, it is now when we’re seeing immigrant communities under unprecedented attacks,” said Mony Ruiz-Velasco, a leader of a suburban Chicago immigrant organizing group called PASO. IMMIGRANTS continued on A54

Oregon Public Library Director Andrew Dettman points out some of the renovations and improvements in new children’s area at the library. The downstairs was transformed into an area for children and young adults. It was just one part of the extensive renovation at the library that’s taken more than a year and cost nearly $600,000.

OREGON – Oregon Public Library renovations are bringing in more people at every level. “People are coming in to read the papers and kids come in to do homework,” Library Director Andrew Dettman said. “We’re getting more kids at Story Time.” One of the draws is a spacious elevator that stops at all three floors and makes the library complaint with Americans with Disabilities Act standards. The elevator entrance was added to the north side of the building, near four new parking places, one of which is for the handicapped, and is accessible by new sidewalks that now run completely around the structure. The totally revamped basement also has two new handicapped-accessible restrooms. LIBRARY continued on A54

DIXON – More than a millennium of knowledge buzzed throughout the Reagan Middle School cafeteria Saturday as 23 area teams competed in a game of wits. It’s not something you would normally think about in a large crowd, the sheer amount of collective information we all hold, of facts and figures, current events and who sings that one song that always seems to come on the radio.
