STERLING – The marigold’s lifespan is short. It’s an annual flower, whereas perennials return year after year. There’s something to be said, though, for what a flower does for the soil it inhabits, if only for a short time. Such was the case for Jen Banks, who passed away Dec. 16, 2015, shortly after a car accident west of Sterling. Reflections of her, reminders of her relentlessly positive spirit, abound throughout the Sauk Valley. The Marigold Club, which effectively replaced the Key Kids Club at Washington Elementary School, where Banks taught, does a lot more than community service projects. It’s given the school a sort of moral code. BLOOM continued on A54

DIXON – It’s easy to go into hibernation mode during the winter, but area park districts are trying to engage community members to stay active this season. Next week, the Dixon Park District will host a baseball camp led by Rock Falls native Robbie Minor, who played for the Gulf Coast Yankees, the minor league affiliate of the New York Yankees. District Executive Director Deb Carey said 28 people signed up for the camp on Monday and Tuesday. The district will have a tennis camp the following week, from Jan. 3 through 5, for children in kindergarten through eighth grade. The camp will run 10 a.m. until noon each day and costs $30. “Our goal is to get people out and doing something,” Carey said. “We don’t want people just sitting around and watching TV; we want to offer opportunities to stay active this time of year.”

Part of the Marigold Club’s goal – along with supporting and encouraging each other – is to always be kind. That kindness was in full bloom Thursday when members of the club visited Parkway Center in Sterling to sing Christmas songs with residents.

A merry and bright Christmas

Packages wrapped? Baked goods baked? Stockings hung by the chimney with care? Good, now take some time to unwind. You’ve earned it. Grab the kids, go get Gramma and Grampa, and pile into the car to enjoy the light displays throughout the Sauk Valley. A lot of folks decorated their homes for the holidays, so spend the nights before Christmas checking out their work. And who knows, if you look up in the night sky Saturday, you might even see another light show that comes out but once a year: a certain reindeer’s nose that shines so bright.

Today’s weather High 34. Low 28. More on A3.
