In need of a supporting cast City wants theater to take on a starring role again, and a task force could help BY RACHEL RODGERS rrodgers@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5529 @rj_rodgers
DIXON – The city is looking into creating a task force to gauge the condition of the Historic Dixon Theatre and find ways to transform it into a “cultural anchor” for the region. In May, the City Council started talks with
How do you solve a conundrum like the Historic Dixon Theatre? The city is discussing the creation of a task force to improve the venue at 114. S. Galena Ave. in Dixon and, perhaps more importantly, clear up who, exactly, owns it.
the county and Dixon Theatre Renovation Inc. about a possible partnership focused on improving the facility and clearing up ownership issues. Mayor Li Arellano Jr. said the partnership is still being worked out, but it would involve creating a new nonprofit organization and board of directors to run operations. The task force would be assigned to help develop a financial business model and physical needs assessment for the theater, allowing the city to “kick the tires” of the theater before making any commitments, Arellano said. DIXON – Drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the United States, and Dixon Police Chief Danny Langloss is on a mission to do his part to change that statistic. Last week, his mission took him to Michigan, where he shared the successes of the Safe Passage program. Danny Langloss and John Rosenthal, Langloss co-founder and chairman of Police Assisted Addiction and Recovery Initiative, discussed plans for drug addiction services in Macomb County with Michigan State Police, which joined PAARI earlier this year and launched the Angel Program in October. Similar to Safe Passage, which launched Sept. 1, 2015, in Lee County and then March 1 in Whiteside County, the Angel Program helps addicts through a treatment program, rather than incarcerating them. Dixon native John McLane Jr. has been leaving his imprint on the Sauk Valley for decades through his architectural and design work. Some of the region’s most recognizable and iconic structures can be traced back to his skilled draftsmanship. Here, he flips through a book with some of the projects he’s had a hand in. DIXON – For nearly a half-century, Dixon native John McLane Jr. has been leaving his imprint on the Sauk Valley. “We’ve done more than 800 projects since my dad began the firm in 1939,” said McLane, 75, owner of the architectural firm McLane and Associates. “Everything from small additions and residential homes to
major construction projects.” The USF&G Building and Medical Arts Clinic (now KSB Town Square Centre) and its multi-tiered parking lot in downtown Dixon were designed by McLane, as was the Winifred Knox Memorial Library in Franklin Grove. Over the years, he has designed strip malls, office buildings, commercial establishments, apartments, and clinics. ARCHITECTURE continued on A54

MORRISON – One decision is in: Trish Joyce has been appointed resident circuit judge in the 14th Judicial Circuit Court. She will fill the seat of Judge John Hauptman, who retired Dec. 4. The jury is still out on another decision: Who will replace her as Whiteside County state’s attorney? Joyce, a Sterling Democrat, won a second 4-year term after running unopposed in the Nov. 8 general election.
