Council is back on the rails Nearly a year after first discussing it, members will review painting, repair project for Galena Avenue bridge BY RACHEL RODGERS rrodgers@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5529 @rj_rodgers
DIXON – After more than a year of delays, the City Council plans to address some housekeeping issues with Galena
Avenue Bridge on Tuesday. The council began discussing repainting the railings along the bridge in July 2015 and awarded a bid to Mount Vernon-based BP&T Co. for about $91,800 the following August. However, there were initial concerns that
the project bid was too low for the scope of the work, and the project was halted in October after finding out the railings were worn from the inside out with rust and wouldn’t be able to withstand sandblasting. City Manager Cole O’Donnell said the corrosion was likely caused by incom-

patible materials with the railing structure and “a possible design flaw.” “With the railings, on both the river and drive side of the walk path, the paint was beginning to wear off, and parts were starting to corrode,” he said. BRIDGE continued on A54

Faith Morris (left) and Jasmine Haggard perform in the Prophetstown High School choir room Wednesday afternoon. The pair is part of a music program that’s had plenty of noteworthy achievements in recent years, which should come as no surprise. The two melody makers can’t get enough of music. “Chorus is my life. It’s the best part of my day,” said Morris. As for Haggard, she already has her heart set on studying music in college, and maybe someday getting into music therapy, “to help people out and give them the sort of music experience I’ve had.”

PROPHETSTOWN – Faith Morris and Jasmine Haggard asked for a chance to warm up. About midway through their duet of Adele’s “Someone Like You,” the
rehearsal was over. Accompanied by Haggard’s smooth accompaniment on keyboard, Morris turned her gorgeous soprano voice loose, hitting every note in her chest as she soulfully belted out the heartbreaking hit. NOTES continued on A114

ASHTON – Residents soon will have the option to buy groceries in the village rather than driving 10 or 15 miles to the nearest store. Ashton Foods, 602 Brown Ave., formerly Ron’s Food Market, closed about a year ago. Lirim Mimini, who has managed Huddle Cafe in Ashton for 18 years, bought the building on Aug. 17. It needs roof and parking lot repairs, new refrigeration units, painting, and cleaning, but Mimini plans to have renovations completed and the shelves stocked by the fall, possibly as soon as midOctober. “We’re trying to make it a onestop shop and keep people in town so they don’t have to drive out of their way,” he said. Mimini’s General Store will offer staples such as milk and other dairy products, bread, vegetables and fruit, canned goods, and deli options such as sandwiches and salads. Coffee and soda dispensers also will be available. The store also will sell alcohol and have a bar area with video gambling machines. Mayor Don Ross said although it’s difficult to compete with large chain stores in Dixon and Rochelle, having a store in Ashton will help keep local dollars in the community.
