We’ve had our ups and downs Economic rankings reveal an economic landscape dotted with peaks and valleys BY RACHEL RODGERS rrodgers@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5529 @rj_rodgers
DIXON – Taking the pulse of an area’s economic health can be as simple as looking to see how many buildings are
full or empty, but sometimes more is needed than just a quick check-up of the business landscape. That’s where the numbers come in. Sauk Valley cities have seen ups and downs in development during the past decade, trends that were recently
reflected in economic rankings released by an independent research firm. Policom Corp., an independent economic research firm based out of Florida, determined 2016 economic strength rankings for metropolitan and micropolitan areas throughout the nation,
metrics based on 23 economic factors during a 2-decade span. This year’s numbers were generated using data from 1995 to 2014, which could show a 2-year delay in sizable events like mass layoffs or large-scale development. RANKINGS continued on A54

CHICAGO – A federal lawsuit has been filed that challenges the constitutionality of the state’s Election Day voter registration law, and claims it puts the Republican Party at a disadvantage. The Illinois law in question, passed 2 years ago, requires counties with a population of more than 100,000 to provide voter registration at the polls on Election Day, while smaller counties don’t have to set up for registration. That means only 20 of the state’s 102 counties are required to let citizens register to vote on Election Day. Because the smaller counties find it costly to offer registration on voting day, and they often struggle to find enough polling site workers, most won’t offer Election Patrick Day registration. Harlan The plaintiffs in the lawsuit are Patrick Harlan, R-Galesburg, who is challenging U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-East Moline, in the 17th District congressional race, and the Crawford County Republican Central Committee. Crawford County has a population of about 19,000. “Illinois voter registration law is unconstitutional – the state cannot give some citizens better opportunities to vote than it gives to others,” said Jacob Huebert, lead attorney for the Liberty Justice Center, the firm that filed Cheri the lawsuit. Bustos Harlan said the impetus for the lawsuit came from his campaign team. “We looked at it a few months ago, and we didn’t like that the smaller counties have an unfair disadvantage,” said Harlan, who is president of the Knox County Tea Party.
