The former Eller & Willey manufacturing company (above) on Palmyra Road in Dixon, the old shoe factory (below left) on First Street and Dixon Iron & Metal (below right) just off First Street in Dixon are among 30 blighted sites city officials have tabbed for potential revitalization, should the city land a $400,000 grant through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Brownfields Assessment Program. City officials hope residents will offer up more potential sites.

City seeks grant, wants you to help fight blight BY BRENDEN WEST bwest@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5529 @BWest_SVM

Know of a blighted site?

DIXON – In layman’s terms, a brownfield is simply “a property with a past,” according to Shelly Griswold. It can also be a property with a future – which is what Dixon officials are hoping for. Griswold, the Fehr-Graham engineering community development specialist, along with city officials and project manager Shawn Ortgiesen, simply want to know: What properties do Dixonites want to rejuvenate?

Anyone interested in helping Dixon’s brownfields efforts should contact Shelly Griswold at 815-394-4700 or sgriswold@ fehr-graham.com. Visit saukvalley.com to see the list the city’s list thus far. “They’re properties that had prior uses that may have led to some type of contamination – properties that need to be investigated in order to make them more attractive for redevelopment,” Griswold said after her presentation to a dozen people Thursday at City Hall.

Dixon is applying for a $400,000 grant through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Brownfields Assessment Program. City officials have identified 30 potential sites for which the grant could be used. Now, they’re hoping community members will help them identify areas the public wants to see cleaned up. Time is of the essence. The application deadline is Dec. 18. “We wanted citizens to come in, learn about brownfields and weigh in on potential sites,” Griswold said.

STERLING – The city will again try to make the first domino fall in determining the future of the 5-story Lawrence Brothers manufacturing site. The City Council approved a resolution Monday authorizing the city to apply for a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Brownfields Assessment Grant. The city has applied for the $400,000 grant every year since 2011, and has come up empty. Engineering firm Fehr-Graham is leading the effort to secure the award in fiscal year 2016. The application deadline is Jan. 14. The riverfront eyesore must receive the no-further-remediation tag from the EPA, which would deem it environmentally safe, before its future in the city’s riverfront redevelopment plans can be determined. “The first step is to determine if the building can be reused, or if we have to demolish it,” City Manager Scott Shumard said. The vacant Lawrence Brothers and National Manufacturing sites could be redeveloped, should the city land a $400,000 grant through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Brownfields Assessment Program.
